Bill died before the April 1910 census. His wife May was reported as a widow
with a son 3 months old. So the child, Ridgely P Johnson, was born perhaps in
January 1910. Bill could have died any time afte the conception of the child
and before the census. We are putting it at about the time of birth, January
1910.

Rites Held For Mrs. Bertha Gregory

Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock a large number of devoted relatives and friends
assembled in the sanctuary of the First Methodist Church to pay final tribute
to Mrs. Bertha Jolly Gregory of New London, Ohio, formerly of Okolona. The
rites were conducted by the Rev. T. R. Poole, pastor, assisted by the Rev.
Allison Bell, pastor of the First Baptist Church. The church choir sang
"Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "God Will Take of You."

Burial was in Lee Memorial Park Cemetery with Order of the Eastern Star
honors. Pallbearers were eight nephews: Lee Johnson of Dallas, Texas, Bobby
Jolly of Gulfport, Robert Harper, J. W, Jolly, Joe Reifers, Clyde Sullivan,

Mrs. Gregory died early Friday morning at the home of her son, Dr. Ben
Gregory, and Mrs. Gregory of Pensacola, Fla. where she was visiting, having
arrived there Sunday. She had been in failing health for some time. She was
73.

A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wade Jolly, pioneer citizens, she was born
and reared in the chalk Bluff community and lived in and near Okolona until
she went to New London a number of years ago, and where she was a store
manager until retirement. She was active in civic clubs and was a member of
the Order of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine. Mrs. Gregory loved people
of all ages and was admired and loved by them and was young in spirit and
ways.

Mrs. Gregory leaves two sons, Dr. Ben Gregory of Pensacola and W. H. Gregory,
Okolona Planter; a daughter Mrs. Delbert Barnes of New London; a brother, Hal
Jolly; two sisters, Mrs. J. C. Boone and Mrs. Edd Reifers, and ten

Alexander was still in Ethel, Arkansas, in his mother's household for the 1920
census. His mother Ciscela (Cisley) was a widowed head of household.

In the 1930 census, Ciscela is again reported as a widow, is head of her
household and has a 10-year-old daughter named Velma Criswell, though her name
is Ciscela Jones. Velma was born in Arkansas, & probably her father died
there.

Her son Alexander is enumerated in Dallas in a separate household with his
wife Ethel and two sons.

Alex has two 1930 enumerations, one with his mother and another under his own
household, with a wife named Ethel in Dallas in the 1930 census, with two sons
born in Louisiana, agaes 11 and 10. So the oldest, Clyde, would have been
born about 1919, while Alex was enumerated in his mother's household in
Arkansas, as a single man. Clyde is also his brother's name which supports
this being the correct Alex Jones in 1930, besides the fact that Alex and
Ethel were also first reported in his mother's household in Dallas, then
marked through, and reported later in their own household.

Note that in Alexander and Ethel's record, there is no report of the age at
which they were married. We do have that information, howver, because In the
enumeraton of Ciscela's household, Alexander and Ethel were at first also
reported as members of her household. Their listings are makred out, though
radable. Apparently the enumarator realized they lived in a separate home (on
Clarence St), so should not be listed in his mother's household.

But the age at which they were married was included on his report in his
mother's household. There is also a difference in the age reported for Ethel.
Since the age at which Ethel is reported first married is greater than the
current age reported on her own record, I will use the age reported in her
record with Ciscela. But the difference between the age at whcih each is
reported first married and the current age don't match.

One anomaly in these 1930 records is that the age of Alex and Ethel's first
son Clyde would place his birth before 1920, when Alex was enumerated in his
mother's home and single in Ethel, Arkansas.

Since Ciscela also tried to report him in 1930, along with his wife, when they
were living in their own household, it may indicate his listing with her in
1920 was an error. No details have been found of Alex's and Ethel's marriage
or the birth of these two boys. No birth records have been found in Louisiana
searches, and no marriage record has been found in Louisiana or Arkansas. No
divorce record has been found in Texas, whre a few years later Alex is married
to Fannie Lee Fuller.

Alexander was again enumerated in Dallas, Texas, in the 1940 census, and his
wife was reported as Fannie Lee. From other records we know this was Fannie
Lee Fuller.

Fanny Lee first married Julius Lester Ford in 1923.

Fannie Lee Fuller

-- Jerry Robnette,
https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/12478704/person/26221795241/facts

Alex and Fannie's daughter Mamie Lee was born there in 1937, attested by her
Texas birth certificate and her reported age of 3 in the 1940 census.

In 1940 Alex and Fannie are married but this census reported no period of time
or age of marriage. In their household is Mamie, her 1-year-old brother
Herbert, and two chidlren named Ford, Julian and Elizabeth. Elizabeth's birth
certificate reports her father waa Julius Ford, matching other genealogy
reports and public records. No record has been found for Fannie Fuller Ford
in the 1930 census, either her maiden name or her first married name of Ford.

No record of Julius and Fannie's marriage or divorce have been found, but
Julian had two othe marriages and at least one of these ended in divorce. We
will not try to reproduce those records here. The Robnette genealogy rpeorts
their mariage, but with reference to no record, probably from family
knowledge.

Jerry Robnette reports that Alexander and Fannie married in 1930, in an
unknown location. Maybe he meant after 1930. No marriage record has been
found. But in reference to the birth record of their daughter Mamie Lee, it
appears they married about 1936. Mamie was born 9 June 1937, according to her
Social Security records. Her birth record has also not been found. Assuming
they married before Mamie was born, her parents would have been married about
June to September 1936.

Notes for Augustus Harris JONES

Georgia, Compiled Marriages, 1754-1850
Augustus A [H] Jones
Spouse Ann R Randle
Marriage 8 Oct 1839 Jackson County, Georgia

The 1850 census, which reports what appears to be the wife of Augustus H Jones
as Ann Randle, age 26, or born about 1824. That means they would have married
when she was only about 15!

The really interesting Texas Jones descendants of Russell Sr. came down

Augustus Harris Jones came to Texas with his father and brothers, with a group
called The Georgia Volunteers. Augustus was a personal friend of Col. James
Fannin of the Texas Army. Augustus enlisted in the Matagorda volunteers on
October 1, 1835, and he accompanied Mag [Major?] Ira Westover in the
Lipantitllan Expedition October 30, 1835. He fought in the first battle of
Goliad at Colita Creek with Fannin.

Later Augustus went to San Antonio and was in the seige of Bexar, December
1835 where Ben Milam was killed. Then Col. Fannin sent Agustus to the United
States to raise funds and enlist men for the Texas forces, and was in the
United States when the Alamo fell.

Augustus became Brig. General in the Texas Militia, and fought with Zachary
Taylor in the war with Mexico, 1846/1848. He was a congressman in the house of
the 9th congress in 1844/1845.

Notes for Augustus Harris JONES

The really interesting Texas Jones descendants of Russell Sr. came down through
Russell Jr., who married Sophia Harris and died suddenly of illness in San
Felipe, Texas, in 1841. His son Augustus Harris [Jones], who arrived in
Mexican Texas in 1835, escaped death at Goliad and the Alamo because he was
off in the States raising money on Fannin's behalf for the Texian cause. Gus
Jr., a cowman turn-of-the-century mayor of San Antonio, joined two other

Georgia mariage records report that Augustus Harris married Ann Roseanna
Randle in 1839. She was still reported as Gus' wife in the 1850 census, so
any earlier children would disappear to be the children of Ann. Some sources
report that Gus Jr was the son of Minerva Lewis, another wife of Gus Sr.

In the 1850 census, we learn that Augustus was born just one month before the
census date, so in about Septmeber 1850. His grandmother Sophia Harris Jones
is also in his father's household.

His obituary, posted on his memorial in Find a Grave, reports that he was to
be buried in the Mission Burial Park, in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. A
photo of his gravestone is posted on the FAG memorial. The birth date there
is the year 1859. But the 1850 census above shows he was 1 month old at
census time in 1850. The birth year must have been remembered incorrectly or
misrecorded at some point.

His mother is there reported as Minerva Lewis, but if he was born in 1850, his
mother was Ann Roseanna Randle, enumerated as the wife of Augustus H Jones Sr.
Ann died in 1851. Minerva was the second wife after that, marrying Gus Sr in
1856. There is a discrepancy somewhere in the records. The census surely is
right that Gus Jr was born 1 month before census time in 1850. But Gus'
biological mother died when he was only one year old. Though in blood
relationship, Minerva was Gus Jr's stepmother, she was the only mother he
would have remembered and who raised him.

His death certificate has these errors concerning his mother and his birth
date, as well as his age as 54, rather than 64. I note that the informant is
apparently his informant, Noa Spears. In the 1910 directory, Gus' position is
"prest" at Noa Spears Co.

Obituary

Thousands of San Antonians paid final tribute to the memory of A. H. Jones,
their late mayor and friend, as the body lay in state in the ballroom of the
St. Anthony hotel this morning, before being taken to its resting place in the
Mission Burial park. From 7:45 o'clock this morning until 10:20 o'clock, when
the funeral service commenced, people passed in and out the room in a steady
stream.

The personnel of the sorrowing thousands who filed by the funeral bier for a
last look at the man, who had been elevated to the highest office within power
of the people to give, was a tribute to his personality and gave fitting
indication of the position he occupied in the community and in the hearts of
his fellow citizens.

People of all walks in life were in the long line - bankers and street
laborers, lawyers and clerks, merchants and mechanics all came to pay honor to
the memory of the dead official. Women and children were there and policemen
and firemen, heads uncovered and crepe on their badges, paid their last
respects to their former chief.

He was a man of robust honesty, one who hated hyprocrisy and sham. He believed
in men and valued them for their worth as men.

"Generosity was another of his sterling qualities. Never was a subscription
list started for something worthy that his name could not be found there. In
public life he did things worth while. He had a fair vision of a city with
well paved streets and other improvements. It was his ambition to make that
dream a reality and transform San Antonio into a lovely city. It may well be
said that he expressed his mark of regal greatness in all activities of life.
