Robert Foote “Bob” Jones
Birth Aug 1878 Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA
Death unknown Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA
Burial Rowland Family Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA

Robert Foote "Bob" Jones was born and lived his life in Arkansas County,
Arkansas. The indications are that he was born and died in the community of
Ethel, but we have reported only the county, having no more definite
documentation.

Bob was the son of William Foote Jones (1808-after 1880) and Mary Emily
Leverett (Apr 1842-Aft 1910. Mary had been previously married to Benz
Schmidt/Smith from Prussia, who died after the 1860 census. Mary and Bob
married about 1868. Their first son, William Foote Jones, was born 12 November
1869.

Bob died between the 1910 and 1920 censuses. It appears to be soon after 1901,
since the last child was Robert Franklin Jones, born 13 November 1910. Family
sources report he was buried in the private family cemetery on the
Rowland-Jones family farm on Belleview Road in Ethel. The cemetery was started
with the death of the first owner in this family line, Bedford Forrest
Rowland.

Bedford and his wife Maggie Ella McSwain lived in a house in the woods on the
property. Bedford was buried in the field at the edge of that woods. Maggie's
brothers later built a new house for her. The cemetery lies between the two
houses. The farm is now owned by a McSwain family member.

Robert's wife Ciscela Ola Holden later moved to Dallas, Texas, with her don
Robert Franklin Jones. They both died and are buried in Dallas.

Notes for Russell T JONES

"The really interesting Texas Jones descendants of Russell Sr. came down
through Russell Jr., who married Sophia Harris and died suddenly of illness in
San Felipe, Texas, in 1841. His son Augustus Harris, who arrived in Mexican
Texas in 1835, escaped death at Goliad and the Alamo because he was off in the
States raising money on Fannin's behalf for the Texian cause. Gus Jr., a
cowman turn-of-the-century mayor of San Antonio, joined two other cattlemen to
build the Saint Anthony, still a luxury hotel there. William Early Jones, a
jurist who was hauled off to Mexico City in 1842 by General Woll while holding
a commissioners court in San Antonio, became first editor of the San Antonio
Express after distinguishing himself as an editor in Augusta, Georgia."
-- James Jones, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, Aug 30, 2017

"Another name in the will [of Drury Christian] jumped out at me: Joel T.
Haley, related somehow to Margaret Connally Jones, married Thomas Jones's
daughter Frances. Their great niece Lucy Cline wrote a stunning description
(in RootsWeb entry for Russell T. Jones Sr.) of the glory that once was the
Thomas Jones home, with seven large fireplaces and chimneys, by Fort Lamar on
Athens Road, Georgia Hwy 106, outside Danielsville, Madison County, Georgia.
Joel carved his 1802 birth date on top of the mantel in the front parlor.
There was a Joel T. Haley Jr., then the Third. The family made it big in the
grocery business in Chattanooga."
-- James Jones, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14 January 2018

"Mary Polly, one of Thomas's sisters, married Gen. Allen Daniel. This
northern portion of Madison was once part of Franklin County, when Thomas's
father, Russell T. Jones Sr., originally settled there. During the
Revolution, when he was in the NC Light Dragoons, the family lived in Wilkes
County, North Carolina, after their original home in Albemarle County,
Virginia, in the vicinity of Monticello and Charlottesville, became overrun
with the British. Russell was a bricklayer and building contractor as well as
farmer. Jefferson biographer Dumas Malone said Jones boys were clients of
young attorney Thomas Jefferson but neglected to say which ones and why they
needed legal representation."

Notes for Thomas JONES

There is a North Carolina Marriage Bond record that matches Tom and Margaret,
but the date is very late. Ther must be another couple with similar names who
married in 1845. Our Thomas and Margaret married about 1805.

North Carolina, Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
Thomas J Jones
Spouse Margaret A Connolly
Bond Date 1 Feb 1845

Bondsman Thomas H Mile

"I have documentation for my third great grandfather, Russell T. Jones Sr.,
who was in the Continental North Carolina Light Dragoons. His daughter-in-law,
my second great grandmother, was Margaret Connally, wife of Col Thomas Jones,
War of 1812. Margaret is actually my Rev. War tie-in to the Connally's. One of
Russell Sr.'s daughters married General Daniel. Did Price Daniel descend from
him, I wonder?"
-- James Jones, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 28 August 2017

"In the original Ancestry packet it is Image 573, "A Return of the Estate of
Drury B. Christian dcd." Besides Joel T. Haley, names include Permelia
[Thomasina Jones] Attaway, Thomas Jones's youngest sister; Thomas Jones,
Charles Jones, Samuel Connally, William L. Connally, William L. Connally, and
Mary Christian."
-- James Jones, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 21 January 2018

Thomas Earl Jones died at the age of 24 in what appeared to be a drowning,
though his boating companion Glen Horton was stabbed to death. A newspaper
(unidentified in clipping I read) reports that his body was found in Hurricane
Bayou of the White River Chute of the Arkansas River near Ethel, Arkansas
County, Arkansas. Thomas Earl was buried in a family cemetery in Ethel,
according to the newspaper story.

Here is a short exerpt of the story:
"The body of Thomas Earl Jones, 24, was found in the White River Chute last
Friday about three quarters of a mile below the head of Hurricane Bayou. ...
No marks of violence could be detected on the body, which was thoroughly
examined by a coroner's jury. ...The Jones boy was buried Friday night in a
family cemetery near Ethel."

This story says the body was found on Friday and buried that night. I thought
that was a short time to get the body out of the river, get it into town,
perform the autopsy, have the coroner's inquest, and finish the legal
investigation the same calendar day. However, I found that the Arkansas Death
Index reports his date of death as 22 January 1938. This date was a Saturday.
Here is the official date of death from the Arkansas Death Index.

date. But the memorial is not linked to John's. I submitted the link on 8
