Foote's full name was William Foote Jones, according to Jones researcher Jerry Robnett. He had a brother also named William. And another brother seems to have also had the middle name Robert Foote Jones. "My husband, Michael L Robnett is descended from William Foote Jones (1860-1929) who resided in DeValls Bluff, AR and is a brother of William Thomas Jones (1875-1948)." -- Jerry Lyn Robnett, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 17 April 2015 On the other hand Terry Jones, a descendant of Foote who has worked with me on the Jones family, says he was not aware that Foote had a first name of William. "Foote is my great grandfather. ... May I ask if you have a formal record which shows Foote as being William Foote Jones. I have never heard that his first name was William. He had an older half brother who was William Thomas and of course his dad was William F, but I've never heard William F was William Foote nor that his son Foote was William Foote. Jerry also reports Foote's full name as William Foote Jones. Certain regions and eras have characteristic naming patterns. There were several generations of William F Joneses, and we know William Foote's son was reported in his first census as Foote Jones. He then went by Foote during his life. One of the general cultural tendencies we find in this are in the 1800s was the use of the same first name or middle name for more than one child of the same parents. That appears to have been the case here, so raises no flags in that regard, when lined up with other family of that community. Another common 1800s patterns in the southern USA was multiple children with the same given name, or the same middle name. Also Foote had a brother also named William. Still another common pattern in certain eras or regions is to use only initials or only a middle initial, then the name shows up in full when one child is called by the middle name or chooses to be so called. Generalization from the general name pattern found in a lineage is often the basis for generalization to a continuing name through generatoins. The preference for a middle initial gives only the tantalizing clue, and that is what this looks like. 1880 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 11 June, (Location & District Unstated), p 17, #115, Fam #118 William F Jones W M 71 Farmer VA VA VA (b abt 1809) Mary E Jones W F 38 Wife Keeping House b AR Mass KY (b abt 1822) Foote Jones 10 W M Son On Farm AR VA AR (b abt 1870) Foote Jones (whom we and others report as William Foot) also had a brother with the middle name Foot, Robert Foote, reported in the 1880 census as Robert F Jones. Someone posted a photo of Foote and Florence in their café. No date or location was given for the photo. This 1920 census helps to locate the photo in Colorado, since the two daughters were working here as waitresses. However, a family source, Terry Carty, also had this photo and sent it to me separately. Terry says the photo is of them in a café they owned in DeValls Bluff (Prairie County), Arkansas. No date is attached to the photo. I do note that the 1920 census in Colorado reports Foote himself as a Farmer, not a café owner. But he is not listed as a café owner in any of the Arkansas censuses either. At some point in their life they moved back to Arkansas, and lived for some years in the DeVall's Bluff community in Prairie County. I found a copy of Foote's obituary posted on the Internet, but the exact date and name of the Newspaper were not included on the clip from the paper. This obit mentions that they had lived in DeVall's Bluff "for a number of years." The posting reports the date of Foote's death as 11 February 1929. This day was on a Monday in February 1929. That matches the newspaper obituary stating he died on "Monday night." The obituary reports that the funeral (and thus the burial) was conducted on Wednesday, which was 13 February 1929. This would lead us to think that the obit was published in the Thursday paper. "Foote Jones, aged 59 years died at his home south of DeVall's Bluff Monday night [11 February 1929] after an illness of more than a year. Mr Jones had lived in this community for a number of years and was held in high esteem by his neighbors. I found a photo of Foote's gravestone, but the resolution made it difficult to read some numbers. It appeared to read: Foote Jones Nov 12(?), 1869 Feb 11, 1929 Foote''s memorial on Find a Grave reports his birth year as 1860, which may be what the hard-to-discern gravestone seems to say. But the thing is, in the 1870 census, Foote is reported to be age 7 months, so it had to be in 1869. Also his obit reports that he was 59 years old, which matches the birth date of November 12, 1869. Foote died in February and would have been 60 on November 12 of 1929. When this correciton was submitted, it was not changed, but the manager of the memorial did add the places of birth and death I submitted to the memorial. His memorial on Find a Grave has the full name as William Foote Jones, matching the full name reported by Jerry Robnette (see above near the top). His gravestone has only Foote Jones. Jerry Griffitt provides some information on the Joneses of Prairie Township, Arkansas County, Arkansas. Much of this information appears to come from family sources, and Jerry also links to censuses that seem to match this family. However, he reports the death of this William (William Foote) Jones as occurring in 1860, but has children born to him into later decades! He further reports him in the census in 1880 in the very same location. Thus obviously Griffitt's death date is wrong. I had questions about other information in this genealogy, and never received replies from the compiler asking about some of these uncertain areas. The basic configuration of Griffitt's information does give us the three wives of William Foote Jones. He names Mary Jane Granbery as a wife, in second position, but I can find no info about her. No other genealogy I have seen has this wife. If she was a second wife between Nancy and Mary, it could only have been between abt 1865, when Nancy's last child Hannah was born, and abt 1868, when William married Mary (based on birth of their first child Foote in about November 1869). Considering that Mary Jane Granberry may be that same Mary E Jones, their reoprted birth dates are almost 20 years apart, so this does not seem like a possibility. James is his brother, both children of (William) Thomas' first wife Mary Frances Criswell. Elma, of course, represents the child Elmer. A Helen Jones, reported by Jimmy Jones as a daughter of Mary Frances, does not appear here. However, we see Mattie, who in the 1920 census is referred to as Mattie H. After a full analysis (see my discussion below on date and age conflicts), it appears that this Mattie H matches Helen, for whom Jimmy provided no age, and who otherwise does not show up. Thus I think I have sufficient grounds here to consider that Mattie, reported by Jerry Griffitt as a child of Cornie, is the child of Mary Frances, matching the Helen in Jimmy's list. Since Mattie is a nickname for Martha, her full name, thus, is probably Martha Helen. There are still conflicts with the next two children, Wince and Charley, both reported by Jimmy as children of Cornie. They were both born more than four years before this census, which reports that Thomas has been married to Cornie only 4 years. The birth states of the mother is not helpful in this case, since both Mary Frances Criswell and Cornie M Cochran were born in Mississippi. Since they have been married 4 years by this time, we can estimate that William Thomas Jones and Cornie Cochran married about 1905. This conflicts, however, with information about the children from family sources. Jimmy Jones reported in email to me that the children born to Cornie Cochran Jones were Elmer, Levi, Marie, Thomas, Wince, Charlie. He provided no birth dates. Jerry Griffitt lists these children and includes birth dates based apparently on the 1910 census. The 1910 census reports an additional child not reported by Jimmy Jones, Mattie Jones, age 8 in 1910. This would mean that by 1910, Cornie would have been married to W T about 9 years, not 4. Jerry's date of 1902 matches this census age of 8 years for Mattie. In the 1920 census, when she is married to Cyrus McSwain, Mattie H is aged 18. Assuming that the report of 4-year marriage for W T and Cornie in 1910 is correct, then Mattie would be the daughter of Mary Frances Criswell Jones. But Jimmy Jones reports no child by that name, and I have found a match for the other names he provided. But this name would not match the middle initial H. This question is further complicated by the report Jimmy Jones gives for these children, when combined with the birth dates available. Jimmy reports Wince Jones as the child of Cornie, but the census of 1910 says Wince was 6, and thus born about 1904, 2 years before Thomas married Cornie, according to this report. In addition the third child, Charley, was 3 years old, and thus born in about 1906 or 1907, again before the census says Cornie married Thomas in 1906. Finally, it seems plausible to consider this census report erroneous. It does seem strange that Thomas and Cornie would have forgot how many years they had been married, and that the enumerator and even Thomas and Cornie would not have noticed the discrepancy of ages and length of marriage. But strange things appear in census records. We can imagine the task of the harried enumerator, taking all these names and details under dictation. It is best to consider this an enumerator error. 1920 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 7 February, South Prairie Township, District 16, page 8B, Hse #103, Fam #161 Jones, William T Head Owns M W 45 Widowed AR VA US Farmer [b abt 1875] West, Elma F Son M W 11 AR AR MS [abt 1909] West, Luzia(?) One of the sons is identified as Charley, but Charley (Charles Foote Jones) died in 1913, according to several attestations. The youngest woman is also identified as William's sister Mattie Helen, but Mattie Helen was his and Cornie's daughter, who would be about 20 in 1923. That matches her looks.
