Several genealogies report the date of death for Reuben as 8 April 1855, but none provides a documentation. I have seen no record for his death date date, except a family source gives the year as 1855. Several genealogies I have seen also puzzlingly have a source for a Prisoner of War record for Reuben, even though they all report he died in 1855! The record is, of course, for another Reuben Kendall. Why they have attached the record to our Reuben Kendall, who died in 1855, is a mystery. Genealogies name Reuben's wife Sarah Smith. Again here there is a dearth of records. Reuben was reported in the 1850 census in the Ross District of Stanly County, North Carolina, with his unmarried daughter Lucy and son Clement in his household. They are both mentioned in his 1855 will, and Lucy was still unmarried at that time. 1850 Federal Census, Stanly County, North Carolina, 9 October, Ross District, p 109 (scan 55), Hse #780, Fam #785 Reuben Kendall 66 M Farmer $2000 Real Estate Value Declared b North Carolina [b abt 1784] Lucy Kendall 42 M [sic, should be F] b North Carolina [b abt 1808] Clement Kendall 20 M Student b NC [b abt 1830] John Davis 20 M Overseer b NC [b abt 1830] The Burrage Family Tree has some good detail that seems to come from family sources, but no documentation or comment is given on the tree on Ancestry. It is presumed that Sallie was a daughter of the elder John, and establishes a long relationship between the Smiths and the Kendalls. I have not researched these Smiths further, but the name certainly appears in other Kendall families of the period. Reuben Kendall was in the NC House of Commons for Montgomery County from 1828-1835 and was in the Senate for NC for Stanly Co. in 1848. There had been Kendalls in the Legislature there off-and-on since 1784, beginning with William in 1784. John Kendall was in the Senate in 1818 & 1819. Of my Crump ancestors, John Crump was in the House of Commons from 1813-1816. Anyway, this is my Kendall/Crump ancestry from Montgomery/Stanly, and the reason for my interest. ... I think that the William and Samuel of Montgomery County in 1790 were probably father and son, with William as the father, and Samuel his son. It is not possible to determine the exact ages of anyone in the 1790 census, but three in the household of William were over 16, and three younger. The household of Samuel included only one male over 16 and two younger than 16, possibly indicating that he was younger than William. It is possible that the five sons of William and wife Sarah Elms were 1) William born about 1770, 2) John born abt. 1772, 3) James born about1775, 4) Reuben born 1784 and 5) Peter born 1794, with son Samuel born about 1768 and living in his own household. With no further evidence, I would suggest daughter Sarah was probably born between 1777 and 1782. -- Ed Crump, Jr, Kendall Discussion List, RootsWeb, http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/KENDALL/2002-12/1040593849 ------------------- In the 1850 census there is a Smith household enumerated on the same page with the household of widower Reuben Kendall with his two adult children Lucy and Clement. ------------------- Here's Edmond Kendall's account of the move to Arkansas in 1855 as retold by his son, Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Kendall sometime about 1945. His niece, Anna Kendall Watts Moore wrote it down in a notebook. Anna was my maternal grandmother's sister. Several months after Reuben Kendallâs death in 1855, his sons, Alexander Franklin and Edmond, took their inheritance and moved their families to what is now Cleveland County, Arkansas. Edmond told his children that the move from North Carolina to Arkansas was quite an endeavor: "Alexander and Edmond Kendall with their families came to Arkansas in 1855, leaving Stanly County, North Carolina on October 15th. As each owned ten or fifteen slaves and as they brought most of their household goods, it took quite an outfit. I remember Father said each of them had two ox teams of two yokes, one mule team, and a team of horses to pull the family carriage, and he and Uncle Frank [A. F. Kendall] rode horseback. After being on the road two days, little Willie was taken seriously ill and died. Father and Mother had to turn back and take Willie back to the old home for burial and then rejoin the others on the road. No other bad luck happened on the trip and after fourteen weeks on the road, they reached Pine Bluff. [They would have actually arrived, then some time in February 1856.] After resting a few days, they decided to rent homes for that year. This gave them time to select permanent homes. They soon found two farms for rent within six miles of each other. They would visit each other once or twice a week and on the way home would kill a deer or two and maybe a turkey, thus providing meat for their tables for both their families and their slaves. He and his brother killed over 300 deer that year but didnât keep a count of the turkeys. 1856 was a year they never forgot as crops were very short on account of a killing frost every month-a thing unheard of before or since. The next year, each purchased a farm. Father bought near Kedron about eighteen miles south of Pine Bluff; his brother bought a farm five miles from his. All went well for a few years. In the election of 1860, Alexander Kendall was elected sheriff of Jefferson County and served all during the Civil War. Father did not join the army being rejected three times on account of his health, but he joined the home guards and at times acted as scout for southern troops whenever any were in the area. Edmondâs wife, Emmeline, died on 1 April 1866 and was buried at Mt. Zion near their home. Uncle Frank Kendall [Alexander F. Kendall] persuaded father to bring his four children to his home instead of taking us to North Carolina to one of his sisters to raise. Then in August, Uncle Frank was returning home from Pine Bluff and was waylaid and shot to death by a man whom he had put in jail, leaving a wife and six children. Father then sold his farm and bought half interest in his brotherâs farm, agreeing with his brotherâs wife to look after the farm if she would take care of the ten children-her six and his four. So the two families remained together until all were grown just like one big family. Edmond was elected sheriff and served from 1874 to 1876. He died on 1 April 1866 at 4 p.m.-the same day and the same time as his wife died twenty-five years before." -- Lea Harville Morgan, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 17 April 2016 ------------------- Reuben wrote his will in 1835, and lived until 1855. -------------------- Will: Reuben Kendall I Reuben Kendall of the county of Stanly and the State of North Carolina do this the 17th day of March, 1855, make public and declare this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other wills heretofore made by me and declaiming this and this only to be and contain my last will and testament. 1 - I give and bequeath to the sole and separate use and benefit of my daughter Frances Sturdevant independent of her husband Hollum Sturdevant during his natural life the following negro slaves and their present increase together with all their future increase from the date of this testament, viz, Phillip, Coria, Martha, and James, and at her death to be equally divided among her children that shall then be living and the issue of such as may be dead as a class (the issue to represent their deceased parent). By analyzing birth states and comparing ages, the similarities seem to confirm they are related. But not all the persons are here for us to be able to connect the family groups. One household is led by widow Sarah J Kennedy. Sarah is 60 years old in 1900, when we find her with her three children in Bayou Meto Township of Arkansas County, Arkansas. Junius C (age 28 in 1900) James B (age 24 in 1900) Hettie A (age 21 in 1900) The 1900 census tells us that Sarah had three children and three are still living. These are accounted for by the three single children in her household listed above. There are two Kennedy men with families living on either side of Sarah and here three children, Edwin D (age 39) and Oscar L (age 35). Because of the similarity of their ages it looks like these two are brothers. Two brothers whose parents were both born in Kentucky. All three of Sarah's children also were born in Arkansas, with both parents born in Kentucky. This makes it seem that their father was a brother to Oscar and Edwin. Members of all these Kennedy families continue to live near each other through the 1930 census. Oscar does not appear in the censuses of Arkansas County after 1900. Edwin passed away before the 1910 census, but we find Sarah's son Junius and Edwin's son Shannon and his children enumerated in 1910, 1920 and 1930. The information from the censuses first led me to think that Oscar and Edwin were brothers of Junius, but this conclusion was stymied by the report in the 1900 census that Sarah had borne 3 children and 3 were living -- and she still had three children in her household! At age 60. Only later did I find censuses for 1880 and 1870 which did, in fact, report that all these Kennedys were Sarah's children! So why the enumerator reported that Sarah had only three children is a mystery. Edwin appeared in both the 1870 and the 1880 censuses, which now give us a unified view of this whole Kennedy family from Kentucky, whose children were born in Arkansas. The 1870 census also provides us with information about Sarah's husband, Jerome B Kennedy. Jerome died before the 1880 census and Sarah never remarried. In 1870 the Kennedys are living in or near DeWitt, in La Greux Township (now spelled LaGrue in a more English fashion). In 1880, we find Sarah and her children in Bayou Meto where we have seen them in later years. 1870 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 12 July, La Greux Township, page 59, PO DeWitt, Hse #43, Fam #41 Kennedy, Jerome B 37 M W Bricklayer Kentucky Cannot read or write Kennedy, Sarah J 30 F W Kentucky Cannot read or write Kennedy, Edwin D 9 M W Arkansas Cannot read or write Kennedy, Corrilla N 7 F W Kentucky Cannot read [or write?] Kennedy, Oscar L 6 M W Arkansas Kennedy, Mary E 3 M W Arkansas Kennedy, Ada R 9mos M W Arkansas born Oct 1869 1880 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 24 June, Bayou Meto Township, District 5, page 38, Hse #403, Fam #418 Kennedy, Sarah J W F 44 (Self) Keeping House KY VA VA (note that Sarah has gained 14 years since 1870) Kennedy, Edwin D W M 19 Son AR KY KY Farm Laborer Kennedy, Corilla W F 17 Daughter AR KY KY Kennedy, Oscar W M 16 Son AR KY KY Farm Laborer Kennedy, Mary W M 12 Daughter AR KY KY Kennedy, Ada W F 10 Daughter AR KY KY Kennedy, Junius W M 8 Son AR KY KY Kennedy, Kate W F 6 Daughter AR KY KY Kennedy, Hettie W M 1 Daughter AR KY KY

Kennedy Born 25 Sep 1911 Died 29 May 1998 Last Residence Almyra, Arkansas, Arkansas 72003 SSN 430-70-3095 issued Arkansas (1955) Note that the SSDI also reports the place of residence as Almyra. Irvin's grandson Russell Irvin McSwain gave me Irvin's name, and I found vital statistics in public sources. The Social Security Death Index provides his birth and death dates and last residence at time of death. Irvin V. Kennedy, Born 19 Jul 1914, Died 15 Mar 1995, SSN 430-70-3111 issued Arkansas 1955, Last Residence Almyra, Arkansas, Arkansas 72003 I found entries in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Irvin while at home with his parents. We also find information on his maternal ancestors in these entries. In 1920, living with the Kennedys is Irvin's grandmother, widow Martha Meiners. We learn from Martha Kennedy's entry that her mother's German last name is from her immigrant father who was born in Germany. Martha Sr's parents are from England, but she was born in Missouri. Martha Meiners Kennedy was born in Illinois. 1920 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 28 June, Garland Township, District 9, page 1A-B, DeWitt Rd, Hse/Fam #12 Kennedy, Shannon Head Rents M W 29 AR AR AR Farmer [b abt 1891] Kennedy, Martha Wife F W 25 IL Germany MO [b abt 1895] Kennedy, Holland Son M W 8 AR AR IL Kennedy, Marvin Son M W 7 AR AR IL Kennedy, Irvin Son M W 5 AR AR IL Kennedy, Clarence Son M W 4 AR AR IL Kennedy, Eugene Son M W 2 AR AR IL Meiners, Martha Mother-in-law F W 59 Widow MO Eng Eng [b abt 1860] In the 1930 census, we get middle initials. From the age of Shannon in 1920 and 1930, it appears his birthday is before April 15, 1890. Likewise his son Holland. Shannon was renting his farm in 1920, but now owns it. 1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 25 April, Garland Township, District 7, page 1A, Hagler Rd, Hse/Fam #7 Kennedy, Shannon A Head Owns M W 40 First married at age 21 AR AR AR Farmer [b bet Jan and Apr 1890] Kennedy, Martha E Wife F W 35 First married at age 17 IL Germany MO [b abt 1895] Kennedy, Holland H Son M W 19 AR AR IL Kennedy, Marvin C Son M W 17 AR AR IL Kennedy, Irvin V Son M W 15 AR AR IL Kennedy, Clarence D Son M W 14 AR AR IL Kennedy, Eugene S daughter [sic] M W 12 AR AR IL Kennedy, Mildred I daughter F W 9 AR AR IL Kennedy, Ruth E daughter F W 7 AR AR IL The enumerator for some reason listed Eugene S as a daughter, and the gender as Female, while in 1920 we see the report says Son and Male, as the name would indicate. Martha E's mother was living in her daughter's household in 1920, but now lives about 5 houses away in her own household on a farm she owns. This might indicate that at the time of the 1920 census, her husband had only recently passed away. Martha Meiners' son George and his wife Effie live with her. Her surname is now Anglicized in the spelling Minors. 1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 25 April, Garland Township, District 7, page 1A, Hagler Rd, Hse/Fam #2 Minors, Martha Head Owns F W 69 Widow MO Eng Eng [b abt 1860] Minors, George Son Rents M W 37 First married at age 30 IL Germany MO [b abt 1903] Minors, Effie daughter-in-law F W 36 First married at age 29 AR AR AR [b abt 1904] (no children) Another of Martha Meiners' sons, William V, is living next door to her, enumerated in Hse # 1 for Garland township, and the first entry on this page. 1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 25 April, Garland Township, District 7, page 1A, Hagler Rd, Hse/Fam #1 Minors, William V Head Rents M W 39 First married at age 36 IL Germany MO [b abt 1801] Minors, Mable Wife F W 32 First married at age 27 IL Nebraska IL [b abt 1803] Minors, Gerald F M W 2yrs 5mos AR IL IL [b abt Oct 1927] In both 1920 and 1930 there is another Kennedy household living two houses down from Shannon and his family that may be part of this family also. The head of the household is June C Kennedy (male), born in Arkansas, but his parents both born in Kentucky. June's wife Lizzie is 38 and she and both her parents were born in Arkansas. So it appears that they married in Arkansas like Shannon and Martha see to have. At age 57 in 1930 June is younger than Martha Meiners, but older than her children, between the generations. He might be a cousin or nephew of Martha's husband. But it might be just a coincidence that these two Kennedy family live so close together. In both censuses 1920 and 1930, we find another Kennedy household that more definitely appear to be related. This is Frank J Kennedy, age 49, he and both parents born in Arkansas. His mother lives with him, Nancy I, age 74 in 1930, born in Arkansas and father born in Alabama, mother born in Mississippi. Frank's age and birth information indicate he could be an older brother of Shannon, and Nancy could be their widowed mother. In 1920 Frank and his mother live four houses from June (J C) and next door to Richard Hargrove's family. In 1930 Richard Hargrove is still next door to him, in the direction away from June C Kennedy, but now there are only two houses between them, and Arch Hargrove is one of them. Arch appears to be the brother of Richard. Another Hargrove who also appears to be a brother lives next door to Richard. Since the Road name has changed, but so many families still live in approximately the same relationship, it appears the name of DeWitt Rd was changed to Hagler Rd. 1920 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 28 June, Garland Township, District 9, page 1A, DeWitt Rd, Hse/Fam #4 Kennedy, Frank Head Owns M W 38 Single AR AR AR Farmer [b abt 1882] Kennedy, Isabelle Mother F W 64 Widow AR AR MS[b abt 1856] 1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 28 June, Garland Township, District 9, page 1A-B, Hagler Rd, Hse/Fam #12 Kennedy, Frank Head Owns M W 38 Single AR AR AR Farmer [b abt 1882] Kennedy, Isabelle Mother F W 64 Widow AR AR MS[b abt 1856] As we saw initially Irvin Virgil Kennedy died, just as his father did, in the same community where he had lived and farmed all his life, Almyra, Arkansas County, Arkansas.
