Notes for Lucina KESSINGER

Her name appears as Lucinda in most genealogies, but it varies in records . It
is Lucina in her first marriage license and the 1880 census where she is a
widowed head of household. It is transcribed as Louine in her second marriage
record, which may have been Louise, similar to her name in the 1870 census as
Louisa.

Her name is recorded again as Lucina in the 1880 census, actually two times
under this name, since she was reported with two different households and the
same three children, with the spellings Lucina and Lusina.

This wife of Marvel Green under several name forms is the same person, because
in the censuses there are several households next door or nearby with the
surname Kessinger. Her name in two compilation collections is Lucinda,
matching most genealogies.

With Louisa or some variation, and one marriage record and the census having
her name as Lucina, it seems likely her name was Lucina Louisa or Lucina
Louise. It would be wonderful to see some of the original records besides the
censuses. Only transcriptions have been available.

In several records Lucinda is reported as Louise or Louisa. In her record of
marriage to William Felkel, her name was recorded as Lucina. The original
records are not available for viewing. These names seem to all represent the
same person.

Illinois, Marriages, 1851-1900
Lucina [sic] Kessinger
Gender Female
Spouse Name William Felkel
Marriage 17 Apr 1860 Montgomery County

In the 1870 census there is a child named Lee Elliott, age 10 and two children
named Felkhell, John age 9 and Edward age 9. These latter two would be twin
sons of William and Lucina/Louisa. Since William and Lucina married in 1860,
Lee Elliott must be the son of a previous husband of Lucina who died in about
1859 or 1860.

William would have died probably in 1865 or early 1866. Lucina married Marvel
Green in October 1866.

In 1880, Lucina is reported as a widow. She is the heada of the household,
and next door is her son Lee Elliott, whose half brother Edward Felkel is
living in Lee's household.

Note that Edward Felkel is reported born in Illinois, and his father born in
Ohio, while Lee (under whatever unreadable name he was reported here) is
reported born in Kentucky with father born in Kentucky. Since they are
reported as half-brothers, this means they had the same mother, but different
fathers. This means they had the same mother.

The simplest explanation of this is that Lucina was married twice, first to a
Mr Elliot, father of Lee, then to Mr Felkel, father of Edward and his twin
brother John reported as 9 years old in 1870. Since we cannot confirm the
birth state of their mother from this census due to the extreme fading of
several areas of the page, we do not have confirming evidence of the mother's
birth in Kentucky, which would match Lucina.

In this census, her son Andrew Jackson Green and his wife Rebecca Kessinger
were living not far away, enumerated on the second page folloiwng Lucina's
record.

Another odd thing occurred in 1880. Lucina and her children are actually
enumerated twice in two separate households in two different counties of
Illinois, 6 days apart. The second enumeration was in a neighboring county.
They apparently owned two farms near each other across the county line.

On 8 June 1880, the second enumeration repeated the first with some incidental
small differences. Lucina was reported as 46 instead of 47, this enumerator
spelled her name Lusina, and a Kessinger family cousin was included in this
Fayette County household of hers. The information on the three children is
exactly the same, except for Esther's name, which this enumerator spelled as
Ester, and he added her middle initial F.

Incidentally, the recording of her name in both these 1880 records by two
different enumerators with the same phonetic form seems fairly conclusive
evidence that her proper name was Lucina, not Lucinda as several genealogies
have, adding to the evidence from her first marriage record.

vital information on William. Since Izella married William Moore in August
1864, we can say that Robert Moore died between the birth of Mary in August
1861 and August 1864.

Notes for Rebecca KIDWELL

In her pension application, Rebecca states that she has lived in Parker County,
Texas, since 1854. We have the marriage date for Rebecca and her husband
Andrew Jackson Bridgman in July 1855, but until a family source, Lena Bridgman
Truster, made this pension information known, it was unclear when the Kidwell
family moved from Illinois to Texas.
-- cited in Bridgman-Kidwell,
http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=familyroots&id=I34286

Rebecca was born in Clark County, Illinois. One census report in 1910,
however, when she is living as a widow with her son James, reports her birth
state as Missouri. The report in 1910 that her parents were born in Kentucky
matches earlier information and family records.

Notes for Mary Ann KIEFER

I have found there are other Kiefers in Brazos County, so I expect other
members of Mary Ann's family moved to Texas with the other German immigrants.

Nicholas Thomas died before the 1870 census. In 1870, Mary Ann is still
living on her land and has here youngest son Lewis N with her.

There is a Laborer in their household, a J Morris, age 50, but I cannot tell
what the state or country of birth is. It appears to be spelled Baen. Though
Morris is another name I did not know of among German-speakers, this could be
a mispelling of the German state of Bayern, a part of the Prussian Empire,
where Mary Ann and Nicholas and many others came from.

In the 1880 census Lewis is still single, but reported as head of the
household, but unmarried in 1880, with his mother Mary Ann living with him.
They are living next door to Louis' brother Peter and his wife Lucy with their
two children.

Also living with Lewis and his mother is the daughter of Lewis' sister
Catherine (Cathrine), who has apparently, along with her husband Charles
Zerbst, died before the 1880 census.

Notes for Jeremiah Early KILMER

Jeremiah is an ancestor of the actor Val Kilmer.

In 1850, Early was enumerated as the oldest of two children in the household
of his widowed mother Mary, under the name of Killmore (Kilmer). They were
living in near Little Rock, Arkansas.

1850 Federal Census, Pulaski County, Arkansas, 22 November, Gray Township,
Hse/Fam #276
Mary Killmore [Kilmer] 40 F $60 Real Estate b Tenn [b abt 1810]
Early Killmore 17 M b Tenn [b abt 1833]
Biron Killmore 14 M b Tenn [b abt 1836]

In the 1860 census, we find Early in Douglas County, Missouri, with his first
wife Nancy Williams and their first three children. From the ages of the
children here, we can tell they moved from Tennessee to Missouri about 1855.

1860 Federal Census, Douglas County, Missouri, 13 July, P O Falling Spring,

(further information provided below as part of his memorial on Find a Grave)

In the 1870 census, Early's wife is named Mary. The children of the family
look right, and match the earlier reports. Is Mary Nancy's other name? None
of the family sources mention a Mary. And Nancy is reported to have died in
1870 or 1871. No Mary is reported among the three wives of Early. I have not
found the marriage record for Nancy or Sarah Jones Duckworth, the widow who
became Early's second wife.

1870 Federal Census, Fulton County, Arkansas, 1 July, Big Spring Township, PO

Killmore, Jennie 11 F W born Arkansas [matches Margaret J of 1860, who was
Margaret Jane]
Killmore, Sarah 9 F W born Arkansas
Killmore, John 2 M W At Home born Missouri

The birth states of the children indicate a lot of moving north-south. It
looks like they moved from Tennessee to Missouri soon after the end of the
Civil War. James was born there about 1857-1858, but they weren't in Missouri
long before moving somewhere south of the border into Arkansas, where Jennie
was born about 1858 or 1859.

Douglas County, Missouri is just one county away for Arkansas in central
Missouri. A little after the 1960 census, they moved back into Missouri,
where John was born about 1862. By 1870 they are back across the border in
Fulton County. Fulton County, Arkansas, borders Missouri in the Ozarks.

In 1880, Early is married to Sarah H Jones Duckworth. They are living in
Johnson County, Texas, south of Ft Worth.

Notes for Marguriet Jane KILMER

The first record I found for Margaret was the 1860 census, when she is reported
as a 1-year-old child with her family in Douglas County, Missouri.

In the 1870 census the child matching Margret is reported under the name of
Jennie, perhaps a nickname for or misunderstanding of her middle name Jane
(Janie)? The family is just across the Missouri border in Fulton County,
Arkansas.

She was born in Douglas County, MO, and came to this state in 1901, moving to
Davis six years ago. (note from Janet: the land rush was 1906, so it should
have said 1906 not 1901) Her childhood was spent in Texas.

[The date of 1901 is likely correct. The Oklahoma Land Rush, officially
called the Oklahoma Land Run, took place in stages from 1889 to 1906. The
first land run was in 1889, in the Unassigned Lands, before the declaration of
Oklahoma Territory. The last Run took place in 1906 December. with "Big
Pasture" lands opened by bids, before the declaration of the State of Oklahoma
in November 1907. The Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations took the first step
toward white settlement when in 1897 they agreed to the pressure of the US
government to abolish the Nations' governments and communal land ownership.
