the age of Melissa as two years younger than she should be, according to the
birth date reported by Mary Nell Burnett in her genealogy of the Knowltons.
Mary Nell says Melissa was born on 20 August 1841. Thus she shoudl have been
9 years old at census time in October 1850. The 1860 census catches up,
however, reporting her 18 at the June census date. This would mean she would
be 19 in August 1860, matching her 1841 birth date. 1860 Federal Census,

The youngest child enumerated in his household is 2 years old, so Mary died no
earlier than 1848. Mary Nell Burnett reports the actual birth date of Oregon
Knowlton as 26 January 1849. So he is not actually 2 years old yet. Thus his
mother Mary died after 26 January 1849. 1850 Federal Census, Phillips County,

seeming to imply he has his own farm. 1860 Federal Census, Phillips County,

Knowlton ancestors. There is some discrepancy among sources and genealogies,
and Knowltons are a subsidiary line for this genealogy, the Knowltons being a
cousin line to one of the McSwain cousin lines. In February 2010 I received a
good note of background from Elizabeth Knowlton providing some good
information.  =========================================== Just came across
your great database in rootsweb.com (with sources, no less!) I wonder if you
are interested in tracing Miles Knowlton, b 1802, CT, back any farther. He
appears in the Knowlton history (1897) by Chas. Stocking on p. 204 as marrying
"Mrs. Tucker" and having three children in Arkansas where he died in 1866. He
is the son of Abel Knowlton (who had 15 children) and Barbara Dimock of
Connecticut. Abel (#498) married twice and also moved to Arkansas where he
died in 1844. Abel was the son of Abraham and Molly Knox Knowlton of Ashford,
CT; Abraham was the son of Robert and Hannah Robinson Knowlton who moved from
Ipswich, MA, eventually to Ashford, being the first Knowlton settler there;
Robert was the son of Thomas and Margery Goodhue Knowlton; Thomas was the son
of John (#5) and Deborah [Grant?] Knowlton; and John was the son of John (#2)
and Marjery Wilson Knowlton, early residents of Ipswich, MA. Much of what is
on the Internet about these people is false. So far, through y-dna testing,
we have proved John (2) and William (3) Knowlton not to be brothers through
their father. Anything beyond them, about their parents, etc., is pure
hearsay so far, so do not depend on the Knowlton history for that. I see you
have Miles' wife, Mary Twedell, as marrying William Tucker first, so that fits
with Stocking's account. I am related to your Knowlton line, however it
connects to you. Elizabeth W. Knowlton

Mary Nell Burnett's Butler-Knowlton genealogy tells us that Robert's birth
date is 8 August 1838. It is puzzling, then, that his age reported in the
census shows an age 2 years younger than expected. In October 1850, he is
only 10, but should be already 12 years. In June 1860, he is only 20, when he
should be 21 (and only 2 months away from his 22nd birthday) if born in August
1838.

Robert's age here also seems to indicate his birthday was in 1839, instead of
1838 as reported by Mary Nell Burnett. For an August birthday, to be 40 in
June 1880, Robert would have been born in 1839. In the 1900 census his birth
date is reported as August 1939.

It is very interesting here that Robert reports his father as born in
Virginia, since every report on Miles himself, plus additional family
information, indicates he was born in Connecticut, and came to Arkansas
directly from there. Similarly, he reports his mother as born in South
Carolina, but Mary Twedell was born in Virginia.

This Loretta Smith is Iva (Ivy) Smith Knowlton's mother. Iva is a proper
first name, and this may well be her proper name. But she is known in family
circles as Ivy, as reported by Mary Nell Burnett in her Butler-Knowlton
genealogy on RootsWeb.

I found that in 1910 Robert has a different wife and they have been married
for 23 years. This would indicate that Ivy died some time before 1877, the
approximate marriage year for Robert and Lizzie.

In the 1930 census, Robert O Knowlton, Jr., is listed as Oregon Knowlton, Jr.

This indicates Oregon and Ruth married in about 1928. They have been married
between two and three years at this census. I learned the identity of
Oregon's wife Ruth only in April 2008, when Ken McSwain, son of Wirt Barnard
McSwain, made reference to his aunt Ruth McSwain's marriage to Oregon Butler
[before she married Ray Recroft]. I was only then able to see the connection
between these two family lineages through this marriage. Ruth was the
daughter of James Magnus McSwain and Ruth L Lowry. This is confirmed by the
report of Marvin McSwain in this census, who is shown as Oregon's
brother-in-law.

Oregon's grandson, Claude Rice, Jr., left a message in my genealogy guest book
on 22 January 2011 telling me of a daughter of Oregon and Ruth, and his
children with Emmie West, Oregon's second wife:
"My Grandfather was Oregon Knowlton, Sr. Oregon Jr. also had a daughter with
Ruth McSwain. She is my first cousin. Her name is Betty Ruth. Last I knew she
lived in Minn. Joyce, Jo Ann, James Robert, & also a daughter by Emmie, named
Bonnie Gail, born around 1955."

We know now that Ruth married Ray (Oswald Eugene) Recroft in 1935. This
indicates that she and Oregon were divorced not long after this 1930 census.
You can find details of Ray and Ruth under the entry for Oswald Eugene Recroft
in this genealogy.

Lorene Noble is reported here as a niece. Her mother was Bernetta Octavia
McSwain, who divorced Lorene's mother, Benmjamin Noble, before this census.
Ben is living with his parents on their nearby farm in the Ethel community. I
have not located Bernetta in the 1930 census. But in 1940 Lorene is with her
mother in Stuttgart, and they are both reported under the name of McSwain.

In 1940, Oregon is with his second wife Emmie West.
