The age at first marriage here does not match the date and ages on Cass and
Grace's marriage certificate. Grace reports that she was first maried at 16.
That would be about 1910. But they were married in 1916. Could the
enumerator have misunderstood, writing her age for the year of marriage? She
was actually 20 when they married, according to the marriage certificate.

Cass is reported as age 24 when he first married, which would mean he first
married in about 1909 or 1910. This would match a first marriage and the ages
of the three boys from that marriage.

In 1920, Mildred and her husband Samuel T Branch are living in DesArc, Prairie
County, Arkansas. The relationships in the household are not clear. The head
of the household is Ed Monroe, a black man who is renting. Sam was first also
designated as head, then this was Xed out, but no substitute status was
entered. Then Mildred is entered as Wife, obviously meaning Sam's wife.

Ed is a fireman at what appears to be Stationary Backer, the designation of
two others on this page also. I checked several pages of the census and find
other designations of this place of work, but still cannot tell what the
enumerator was trying to spell. The smeary writing makes it hard to read
these occupational designations. Sam is a Grader at the Veneer Mill. There
is also a stone mill in DesArc where others on this page work.

The location of the next events is puzzling. In 1922 Mildred Branch is
recorded in the Memphis City Directory along with other members of her family.
Then in 1924, she divorced Sam in White County, Arkansas, over in the center
of the state. In Memphis, she is listed twice, once under her step-father's
name, and once under her married name. Her first listing, as Mildred Branch,
reports her job a candy wrapper. The second, under her maiden name, reports
her as a candymaker. Thanks to her granddaughter Ann Burkley for finding
these directory entries and informing me.

Mildred's granddaughter also gave me the information on her marriage to Robert

By 1930, we find Mildred and her second husband Robert H Presley, in Leake
County, Mississippi. Note that this census reports the "age at first
marriage." The ages reported here are Robert 24 and Mildred 25. We know this
is the age of Mildred at THIS marriage, not her first marriage, when she was
18. Their ages here indicate they have been married about 5 years or more.

The two young children in the household would be her children with Robert.
The oldest is reported as 4 years and 6 months, making her born in about
August or September 1925.

Lillian's name appears in several variations. The mothnteresting is in her
daughter Gail's birth certificate, where her name was reported as Lillian

Notes for Anne L'ESTRANGE

The maiden name of Anne (Ann) is uncertain. It appears from the form of the
name in some sources that her name was already Le Strange. It is spelled
L'Estrange AND L Estrange (without the apostrophe) in some sources. A few
genealogies have the more standard Le Strange. This is a variation used by
some branches of the family in Devon. The name is already registered under
various spellings in the Domes Day Book, 1085, the first general register in
English history, implemented by the Norman King William I of England.

The Hunstanton family spell the name Anne, but in their minimal information,
they use their family spelling, le Strange, of the last name. Other sources
spell her name Ann, and may spell her name L Estrange. The common spelling of
the latter form uses an apostrophe, so I have done that.

Some sources report birth place as Hunstanton, Norfolk, England. According to
the family website and the Devon County website, there is also a Hunstanton
town and estate in Devon County.

There is a discrepancy about the husband of Anne L'Estrange (Le Strange).
Tudorplace reports that this is the wife of John, and that Robert married a
Margaret Le Strange. The Le Strange website reports that Ann L'Estrange
married Robert. However, the death date given by Le Strange Website for Anne
is 1497, before any of the children of John are reported born, by Tudorplace
or other sites that give birth dates. (Le Strange Website is a more casual
site, has less critical attention to consistency and completeness and has few
birth dates.) At least one child of Robert was born in 1499. This puzzle
remains to be resolved.

Some of these dates appears uncertain. Different genealogies report dates or
places irregularly and incompletely. There are great variations between
sources, and some appear to be uncritical, for there are internal conflicts
between the dates reported in some.

The Le Strange Family Website lineage is helpful, and I have followed that as
a more definitive general guide. I have generally followed that for the
location of birth, where that is given. However, that information is quite
spotty and has dates and places for only a few persons. Dates there are
sometimes estimated, and some information clashes with known historical
information from reliable genealogies.

The lineage was posted only as a secondary interest, and the site, while
giving history, does not focus primarily on the family details. It is
primarily a personal hobby site about the family by one of the current family
members of another last name.

The dates reported by sources give the same year for the marriage of Robert
and Anne as for the birth of the first son Thomas.

Pauline Johnson Lackey Gossom
BIRTH 17 May 1937 Almyra, Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA
DEATH 12 May 2016 (aged 78) Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas, USA
BURIAL De Witt Cemetery, De Witt, Arkansas County, Arkansas

Pauline Lackey Gossom, age 84, of Pine Bluff, went to be with her Lord on
Thursday, May 12, 2016.

She was at peace with God, and was ready at any time that He was ready to
bring her home. Pauline is now rejoicing with her loved ones who are already
in God’s Kingdom.

Also known as “Polly”, “Mom”, “Meme” or “Aunt Poppy”, she was
born May 17, 1931 in Almyra, Arkansas. Her parents were the late Edd and Naomi
Bryant Johnson, and she attended school at DeWitt.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands,
Robert Lackey, whom she married in 1948, and Walter Gossom, whom she married
in 1969: her only son, Ralph Lackey; two daughters, Terri Lackey and Linda
Lackey Hurd. Also predeceasing her are three brothers, Edward Johnson, Johnny
Johnson, and James Johnson; along with two sisters, Ruby Johnson and Lois
Johnson Kesler.

Pauline is survived by her daughter, Kim Williams and husband Tim of Woodlawn;
her grandchildren, Ben Lackey and wife Lydia and Julie Chambers, all of White
Hall, Meghan Schimmel and husband Joseph of Stuttgart, and Trent Williams of
Woodlawn. She is also survived by a sister, LaFern Sebree of Almyra; two
special sisters-in-law, Lillian Lackey Horton of Pine Bluff and Betty Lackey
Bateman of DeWitt; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was an active member of Meadowview Baptist Church, where she was a past
Sunday school teacher and an officer of the Women’s Missionary Auxiliary.
She prayed daily for her family, her church family, and many others. Pauline
loved her God, and was always full of wisdom, humor and truth - like it or
not. She was always putting everyone before herself.

Pauline had a poem for every occasion, and was always clipping articles and
pictures from magazines for her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed
reading and making baby blankets.

For many years, she worked as a checker at Mad Butcher grocery store on Ohio
Street. Before illness caused her retirement, she also worked a number of
years at T.G&Y.

Visitation will be Saturday, 10:00 a.m. at Fuller Hale-South Funeral Chapel
followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. with Brother Larry Haynes officiating.

A graveside service will be held in DeWitt Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

A couple of undocumented genealogies report Cecil's middle name as Alvin. But
on his 1918 WWI draft registration, it was Cecil Andrew LaCotts, and he signed
it with that full name.

Some sources have the surname as Lacott. Three undocumented genealogies
appear to be presenting information from family sources, with full names and
dates. Clarence's date of death is reported as 15 Nov 1920. In these trees
the name is Lacotts. It appears that way in Clarence's marriage record also.
Note below also that he signed it as LaCotts in his WWI registration. It is
also spelled in the French way LaCottes in his son's listing in the Little
Rock City Directory in 1923. John's son Clarence signed his name as LaCotts.
This is how it appears on most records.

Sometiems on these Index-only recors, the problem is in the transcription.
Ancestry.com ignores all caps after the first letter, so, for instance all
Irish and Scottish names show up with no capitalization in their
transcriptions; ex Mcswain instead of McSwain, the correct form.

Age reports for Clarence and others in Arkansas County in this era are all
over the place. Note that in the 1900 census, his age was reported as 6, with
a birth date of 1894. But in his marriage record in 1913, he reported his age
as 22, which would make birth in about 1891. This does match his reported
birth date of 17 February 1891, reported in his WWI Draft registration. One
wonders how the enumerator got his age as 6 (then figured his birth date back
to the year 1894) when he was already 9 years old in 1900!

In the 1910 census, Clarence and his young sister Ruth are living with their
grandmother.

In 1929, Esther is reported running a beauty parlor. In 1926 and 1929, the
widow of a John LaCotts was also reported in Little Rock. Her name was
Lucenia in the 1926 directory and Bettie in 1929. Bettie is a common nickname
for Elizabeth. It seems likely her name was Lucenia Elizabeth. The 1910
census clarifies the identity of Lucenia/Bettie, reporting that Clarence is
her grandson. This means she is John Azari LaCotts' mother, and his father's
name was also John. John Jr, Clarence's father, lived until 1942.
