Lloyd Matthews, in his genealogy of the family indicates the original French form was Lecates, which is pronounced about the same as the Enlgish spelling LaCott(es). The S would not have normally been pronounced in modern French. The S may have been retained in Enlgish, from the old French pronunciation or just from the spelling form. The genealogy to which the gravestone is attached reports that burial was in DeWitt Cemetery, but also reports he was buried in McKewen Cemetery in Arkansas County. It also reports on his profile that his death was in Lonoke, Arkansas, but then reports it as in Roanoke, Virginia, on the grave photo. So that tree expresses some confusion. Some undocumented genealogies have picked up this reference to Roanoake, and report that as the death place. I suspect this was a subconscious confusion of Lonoke, the plsce of death, with Roanoke. We have no information indicating that John was ever in Virginia. In the directories, Lucenia/Bettie is reported as the widow of John. This tells us that John a LaCotts' father was also John. In 1920 Clyde is 8 years old. But in the genealogy where I first found the photo mentioned above, Clyde is reported born in 1917. But in July 1917, Ben was in Liberty County, Texas, and reported himself as Single, not married or divorced. In his 1917 Draft Registration he reported that his mother and one child wre dependent on him. By the time of the 1920 census, however, he has his 8-year old son Clyde in his household, and this would be the son of Ruby. But the photo, however, shows a much older child, at least 3 years old, but maybe 4. So that photo was taken likely in about 1915.
