Notes for Earl of Leister and Derby Plantagenet Thomas 2nd Earl of LANCASTER

---------------------------------------------
Thomas, Earl of Lancaster (c. 1278 - March 22 1322) was one of the leaders of
the baronial opposition to Edward II of England. A descendant of Henry III of
England, Edward was his cousin. Thomas Lancaster led two rebellions against
Edward. ...

Thomas Plantagenet was the eldest son of Edmund Crouchback, 1st Earl of
Lancaster and Blanche of Artois. His paternal grandparents were Henry III of
England and Eleanor of Provence. His maternal grandparents were Robert I of
Artois and Matilda of Brabant, who was a daughter of Henry II, Duke of
Brabant. ... From his father Thomas Plantagenet inherited the Earldoms of
Lancaster, Leicester, and Derby. ... Lancaster was convicted of treason and
executed near Pontefract Castle.
-- "Plantagenet, Thomas, 2nd Earl of Lancaster," New World Encyclopedia,
http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Thomas_Plantagenet%2C_2nd_Earl_of_Lancaster
---------------------------------------------

Thomas was executed by King Edward III for treason. His brother Henry was in
no way implicated nor suspected in Thomas' plot. Henry kept one of the family
titles, Earl of Leicester (1324). Henry later, however, joined in another
rebellion against King Edward. He joined Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer
when they returned from France to depose Edward.

for 6 years.

But I was contacted by a homeowner who had just bought a home in Talking Rock,
Georgia, where James/Martin used to live. She reported that she has found a
private burial with a stone with his same information on it.

"I purchased a home in Talking Rock in the area where he used to live. There
is a tombstone marker in my backyard with his name, birth date and death date.
There a two large rocks unusual to that area which appear to be a head stone
and a foot stone. This was in the woods for many years and has recently been
cleared."
-- Kimberly Weddington, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, June 22, 2017

Kimberly took some photos of the grave and the small stone is clearly radable
with his full name and dates, and the name of B C Logan Inc, whiich I have
confirmed is a funeral home. This is the format used for initial, temporary
markers until the permanent marker is put up. Sometimes it remains even
after. It makes sense that this was the actual burial place, on the famliy
property, as was common back then in many areas. The marker in Philadeplhia
Church cemetery would be a marker to memorialize him with the family there.

This format type of marker I have seen a lot, and saw many when we visited 6
cemeteries in my wife’s area of Arkansas last month. Nowadays it is usually
a metal plate. This is the type of initial, temporary marker used to mark a
new grave before the permanent stone is put up. In some graves this is all
that was there. In several this was still there even with the permanent
stone. Edith’s mother’s grave had only this for some years before the
permanent stone was put up.

This location and this type of marker are a very good indication that this was
indeed the original burial spot, and the marker in the Philadelphia Church
cemetery is a memorial only to identify him with the family group. I think we
can safely declare this the burial spot of James Martin Lance.

about 1917. No death or burial record has been found.

Notes for Columbus Lafayette LANE

Columbus' father Embargo C Lane moved the family to Texas from Alabama sometime
after the birth of Robert in Alabama about 1839 and before the birth of
Embargo Junior in Texas in about 1843. Columbus was enumerated in the 1860
census under his middle name Lafayette at 4 months of age. He appears to have
been born in Panola County, Texas, where the census was taken.

1860 Federal Census, Panola County, Texas, 7 August, Beat #6, PO Fair Play,

Columbus' father moved some time before 1867 to Hopkins County. Embargo C
Lane was registered to vote in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas, in
1867. The middle initial C probably stand for the name Columbus.

In the 1870 census, Columbus is again listed as Lafayette. Ages in this
family vary considerably between these two censuses, but Lafayette's is
consistent.

Columbus' family was enumerated twice, 10 days apart, byt he same enumerator.
The general location is the same, but neighbors are different, however, which
may mean they owned two separate farms close together. In the following one,
10 days earlier than the one reproted above, Columbus is so reproted, instead
of as Lafayette. Ages of some children vary 2 years in these two reports,
just 10 days apart, taken by the same enumerator! Mary, reported as 18 years
old here, is only 3 years older than her reported age in 1860, and 2 years
younger htan the report above, made 10 days later..Talbot's name is different
and several individuals have no middle initial as reported in the one above.

In 1880, a census record in Parker County, Texas, appears to be for this
Columbus Lafayette Lane, in the name of Lafayette Lane, married to his first
wife named Mary. This seems to match in general, though it is farther west
than we have other documentation for Columbus Lafayette Lane. And his parents
are both reported born in Louisiana, while othe reprots say father in GA and
mother in AL.

In 1900 Columbus' wife Mollie is enumerated twice. Once as a widow with her
children living in her mother's household in Kaufman County, Texas. But three
days earlier she had been reported as the wife of Columbus Lane in neighboring
Hunt County, Texas. Her son Wiley Williams was born in December 1897 (could
have been 1898, due to common error of one year in the 1900 census birth date
entries).

In 1910, the enumerator reports the place of birth of all the children as
Alabama, which is Mollie's birth state, not that of the Lane children's
mother, which was reported as Illinois in 1900. They are in Rockwall County,
east of Hunt, where they were enumerated in 1900.

This 1910 census reports that Columbus and Molly have been married 7 years.
How can that be when they are already enumerated as a family in 1900, with the
Williams boys reported as Columbus' step-sons and Mollie as his wife?
Actually the 1900 census reports they have already been married 20 years,
meaning they married about 1890. But that has to be an enumerator error, just
going by the ages of the children of both surnames. They've only just gotten
married to each other. Mollie's last Williams child is only 2 years old.

It appears in the 1900 census that Columbus originally got married about 20
years before, going by the age of his daughter. That matches the report of
his being married for 20 years. But this column is supposed to be for the
number of years of the current marriage, which would be only a few months. He
also strangely reports Mollie as married for 20 years. The enumerator must
have been confused also or distracted in entering Mollie's information, and
may have just drawn down the same number for Mollie without thinking. The
last two Williams boys were born in 1892 and 1889. They did not marry until
after June 1889, but with the birth of Wiley Williams in 1897, Columbus and
Mollie could not have married until at least after his birth in Dec 1897. We
can say about 1898 or 1899.

Columbus died sometime before the 1920 census, when Mollie is enumerated with
her next husband Joe T (Toliver Jorile) Green. I have not found his grave or
a death record. I suspect it was around 1918 or 1919 and in or near Marlow,
Oklahoma, since Mollie's mother and her stepfather William Chenault were
living in the Richland Township outside Marlow in 1910, as was Toliver Jorile
Green and his family.

Embargo C Lane was born in Georgia, as was his wife Eliza. They lived in
Alabama for a short time, where their son Robert was born in about 1837. I
have not found them in the 1850 census. Since they were married in 1831,
Robert as probably not their first child. Since he named one son Columbus,
perhaps Embargo's middle initial C stands for the name Columbus.

He moved his family to Texas from Alabama sometime between the birth of Robert
in Alabama about 1839 and the birth of Embargo Junior in Texas in about 1843.
Columbus was enumerated in the 1860 census under his middle name Lafayette at

Ages are all out of whack from one census to the other. Either the family or
the enumerator was not paying any attention to ages. By the numbers reported,
Embargo gains only 7 years between the censuses of 1860 and 1870, Elizabeth 8,
Mary 5, daughter Elizabeth 8. Jasper and Lafayette match pretty well with a
move from 6 to 15 and 4 months to 10 years respectively.

I cannot match Daniel B age 24 in 1870 to anyone reported in 1860. Daniel
matches no 1860 child by name, but he is born in Texas, and is closest to
Embargo in 1860. There is a 3 year shortfall, but otherwise in the sequence,
Embargo matches. Three years difference is closer than some of the other
children. The middle initial of Daniel B may be for Embargo; maybe the
enumerator heard it as "Bargo," or maybe that was a nickname.

This family was also enumerated twice in the same location by the same
enumerator, 10 days apart. But the neighbors are different, and it is the
same enumerator, so maybe they owned two farms close to each other. The one
reported here was 10 days before the one reported above, which I found first.
Here Lafayette is reported as Columbus and the daughter Elizabeth is not here
as in the one 10 days later. Note that the names vary some, and the ages vary
from the other 1870 census as well as from the 1860 census. It is like they
were just guessing on ages. Talbot/Talbert and Mary are two years younger
than reported in the other listing just 10 days later. And somewhat different

1840 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, Northern Division, Date Not
Known, Page 328 (scan number)
Isaac Lane head of household
Males 1 Under age 5; 1 x 5-10; 1 x 10-15; 1 x 20-30; 1 x 50-60
Females 1 x 5-10; 2 x 10-15; 1 x 20-30; 1 x 30-40; 1 x 50-60

Isaac's father Tidence is enumerated next door to him as Tide Lane. It is
unclear where his mother Mary is, since Tidence is enumerated as the only
person in his household. I suspect she is with one of the children, perhaps
taking care of children at the time of birth of a new gradndchild? She is not
in Isaac's household. She did not die until 1851.

E A Lane here does not match Eliza in the 1850 census, but since the last
child was born just one month before the census, I must conclude that E A Lane
here is Eliza Robinson Lane, who was reported as age 38 in 1850 though EA is
reported as only age 41 in 1860!

I cannot account for all the Robinson children here. It seems likely that
several of them are Eliza Robinson's children from her first marriage. But
note that by the age reported here, N C Robinson was born in about 1852, two
years after Eliza married Isaac Lane, and after the birth of Eliza's daughter
Mahala E Lane in 1850.

For that matter, where is Mahala, who should be 10 or 11 years old. Did she
died before the 1860 census?

Some of the Robinson children match Lane children reported in the 1850 census
above. Perhaps they were reported under the name Lane instead of Robinson.
MA Robinson age 16 in 1850 may be Mary Ann Lain age 6 in 1850.
Isaac Lain age 11 in 1850 matches I R Robinson 20 in 1860.
In age, Orphy Lain age 9 in 1850 matches Barsheba Robinson age 18 in 1860.
In age, Theodore age 2 in 1850 matches G W Robinson age 13 in 1860.

But R E Robinson, age 23 in 1860, who matches Richard Lain age 13 in 1850, is
reported as female instead of male.
