Notes for Herlewin LE BRUN

No details are known about Herlewin (Herluin), father of Ralph of Hunstanton.

Notes for Matilda LE BRUN

Matilda was the heiress of Hunstanton. She is also referred to in some sources
as Maud de Hunstanton. When she married Roland Le Strange (Rolleus
Extraneus), the estate then passed into the Le Strange family and name. This
established the Le Strange family in Norfolk.

Dates for this couple given by the Hunstanton Le Strange Family Website are
earlier than those reported by the Hart-Corbet-Le Strange genealogy and
background information. No birth or death dates are given for Matilda, but
the marriage date is 1112, compared with 1141 given by the Hart Family
Website.

A couple of sources have Maud as the wife of John Le Strange I, but the weight
of facts and dominance of sources seem to indicate that Maud/Matilda was the
mother of John I and the husband of his father Roel.

Notes for Henry 4th Lord Scrope LE SCROOP

"Sir Henry le Scrope, born 4th June, 1418, ... his father, Richard le Scrope,
3rd Lord Scrope of Bolton, died 29th August, 1420. ... He married Elizabeth le
Scrope (born about 1417 in Upsal, Masham, Yorkshire; died after August 1498 in
Young). ... Sir Henry le Scrope died on the 14th January, 1459."
-- Mike Scroope, The Scroope Family (unpublished genealogy provided by
Jonathan Scroope (South Africa: Mike Scroope).

Mike references an online Scroope genealogy, which I quote from here:
=============================================
Sir Henry Le Scrope - 4th Lord Scrope of Bolton

Sir Henry Le Scrope, born 4 June, 1418, was only two years old when his
father, Richard Le Scrope, 3rd Lord Scrope of Bolton, died (29th August,
1420). He then became a Ward of the Nevilles.

He married Elizabeth Le Scrope (born about 1417 in Upsal, Masham, Yorkshire;
died after August 1498 in Young), daughter of John, 4th Lord Scrope of Masham,
circa 1435 in Masham, Yorkshire. They had four children:
* John Scrope - eldest son; born 22nd July, 1435; became fifth Lord Scrope of
Bolton
* Margaret - born in 1440 in Yorkshire, England. She was married to John
Bernard.

He was first summoned to parliament in 1441, during the reign of Henry VI.
Sir Henry Le Scrope died on the 14th January, 1459.

Notes for Margaret LE SCROOP

My ancestor Margaret Le Scrope (b 1440, Yorkshire), who married John Bernard of
Northamptonshire, was descended from two lines of Le Scropes, Bolton and
Masham. Here is the entry from Scroope.Net that details their common origin.

================================================
Sir William Le Scrope was the son of William Le Scrope. He was born between
1245 and 1255 in Bolton or Bracewell, Wensley, Yorkshire, England. He
succeeded his brother Richard Le Scrope. Sir William Le Scrope was listed as
holding the manor of West Bolton in 1286. He served as Bailiff of Richmonshire
in 1294. He was later knighted at the Battle of Falfirk in 1298.

He married Constance de Newsom (Gille) [born about 1249 in Newsom On Tyne,
Yorkshire, England]. They had four children, including two sons, Henry Le
Scrope and Geoffrey Le Scrope, from which the two great family lines of the
Scropes of Bolton and the Scropes of Masham have descended.

Sir William Le Scrope died in February, 1312.

================================================

Mike Scroope compiled an extensive scholarly genealogy of the Scroope family,
which was conveyed to me in July 2009 by my friend, his brother, Jonathan
Scroope (Edenvale, South Africa). This genealogy reports the connection of
the Scroope line to our Bernard/Barnett lineage. (Margaret's father is our
common ancestor.) Mike has referenced the Scroope.net research, and included
the links to that in his compilation. Here is the information on Margaret as
presented in Mike's work.

================================================
Sir Henry le Scrope, born 4th June, 1418, was only two years old when his
father, Richard le Scrope, 3rd Lord Scrope of Bolton, died (29th August,
1420). He then became a Ward of the Nevilles. He married Elizabeth le Scrope

Henry le Scrope died on the 14th January, 1459.

times.

================================================

The Tudor Place source does not report a year for her death. Some genalogies
have reported her death as the year 1466, but this is impossible, since this
is the year she married her second husband. There are other discrepancies,
also, since genealogies report her son John Bernard was born 1469. Her
husband John Bernard did not die until 1485.

Notes for Henry 1st Lord Scrope of Masham LE SCROPE

Henry was the First Baron Lord Scrope, but among his children they went through
number 9 Lord Scrope, so many died after a short life. It was a dangerous,
perilous period, with plagues and wars.

The meager records of the Millennium File collection reports one son of Henry
Lord Scrope and his wife Joan, named John, who succeeded Henry as Lord Scrope
of Masham.

Other children are listed by some genealogies, and the following one lacks
Etienne, as well as John. Some genealogies report his birth place as Clifton
Castle, in Clifton-upon-Ure, Yorkshire, England. Some report this as his
place of death ,while others report Ghent in Yorkshire. Others report Clifton
as Joan's palce of birth and Ghent, Yorkshire as Joan's place of death.

Other sources report a different Yorkshire location for the death of Joan.
This appears to be the same location as reported by most sources for her
birth. I have not found a documentation for this location.

Death 21 September 1349 in Clifton Castle, Clifton-Upon-Ure, Yorkshire

It seems likely the Ghent location is the correct death place of Joan Agnes
LeScrope, since some sources report that Henry also died there. The latter
report is somewhat vague, since often only the name of the city/village is
given, and one might think that Ghent, Flanders, is intended.

Jonathan Scrope in South Africa, brother of Scrope/Scroop researcher-compiler
Mike Scroop, gave me the Scrope genealogy in disk file form. Jonathan and
Mike are my first cousins many, many times removed. This genealogy provides
what could be found at the time of Mike's research.

Notes for Richard LE SCROPE

Fewer details are found about Richard Le Scrope than for others of his family.
Here are a few facts reported by the Tudor Place Genealogical summary.

Richard SCROPE
Born ABT 1346/52 Wensleydale, Yorkshire, England
Father Richard SCROPE (1° B. Scrope of Bolton)
Mother Blanche De La POLE (B. Scrope of Bolton)
--  Tudor Place, http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/SCROPE.htm#Richard SCROPE2

The date of birth for Richard, this source reports appears to indicate a range
between 1346 and 1352. But we know he was born after 1348, because the first
son inherited the title of Bolton, and this went to Roger, born in 1348.

A commonly reported date of death is 8 June
1405.

Notes for Richard 1st Lord Scrope of Bolton LE SCROPE

Wikipedia introduces Richard Le Scrope, 1st Lord of Bolton.

============================================
Richard Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of B

Richard le Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton (c. 1327-1403) was an English
soldier and courtier, serving Richard II of England, and the builder of Bolton
Castle.

He was a knight of the shire of Yorkshire in the parliament of 1364, and was
summoned to the upper house as a baron by writ in 1371, when he was made Lord
High Treasurer and Keeper of the Great Seal.

In 1378 Lord Scrope became Lord Chancellor, a role in which he attempted to
curb the extravagance of Richard II. He was given license to crenellate at
Bolton Castle in 1379. He was deprived of office in 1382.

Both as a soldier and a statesman Lord Scrope was highly regarded.

Heraldic litigant

Scrope engaged in several disputes with regard to his armorial bearings, the
most celebrated of which was with Sir Richard Grosvenor for the right to the
shield blazoned "Azure, a bend Or," which a court of chivalry decided in his
favor after a controversy extending over four years (see Scrope v Grosvenor)

Geoffrey Chaucer and Owain Glyndwr gave evidence in Scrope's favour.

Family

He was a son of Henry le Scrope. The Archbishop of York Richard le Scrope was
a first cousin.

He married Blanche de la Pole and they had four sons:
Roger Scrope, 2nd Baron Scrope of Bolton

=============================================

The seat of the Bolton Lordship of the Scropes was Bolton Castle in
Wensleydale, in County Yorkshire. The castle was built by Richard, 2nd Lord
of Scrope of Bolton.

"It was built between 1378 and 1399 by Richard le Scrope, Lord Chancellor, and
is an example of a quadrangular castle. The castle is still owned by the
descendants of the Scrope family and is a tourist attraction. The castle was
damaged in the English Civil War, but much of it remains. Mary, Queen of
Scots, was held for six months in the castle."
