Mary E Leverett was enumerated with her family in the 1850 census in Arkansas County, Arkansas, at the age of 5. She wsa the last child, and born in Arkansas. Her older brother Henry had been born in Tennessee about 1960, according to this enumeration. But interestingly, the oldest child in the household, Lewis at age 19, was also born in Arkansas. It suggests that they lived in Arkansas near emphis for a while, then moved across theborder into the state of Tennessee for sometime, then moved back to Arkansas. It is not know when they actually moved down to the Ethel-St Charles area along the White River. 1850 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 16 November, Prairie Township, page 36, Hse/Fam #53 Ebenezer W Leverett 53 M Farmer $10 [sic] Real Estate value b Massachusetts Elizabeth Leverett 51 F b Kentucky Lewis Leverett 19 M b Arkansas Henry C Leverett 10 M b Arkansas Mary E Leverett 5 F b Arkansas John Leverett 21 M Farmer b Louisiana The following 1860 census record is linked by Jerry Griffitts as Mary E Smith, later the wife of William Jones, and mother of William Thomas Jones. He does not list any parents for her, so there is no clear family link. The listing under the name Jones may mean this was also her maiden name before she married Benz E Smith (a Prussian actually named Schmidt). Smith seems to be her first married name. 1860 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 20 July, Prairie Township, p 62, Hse #454, Fam #434 Benz E Smith 28 M Farmer $200 Personal Estate b Prussia Mary E Smith 17 F No Occupation b Arkansas [b abt 1843] Cobel Pierce 28 F Housekeeper $170 Personal Estate b Tennessee James Jacek (?) Pierce 2 M b Arkansas Griffitt lists another wife between Nancy, who appears in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, and Mary, William's wife in the in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Griffitt reports two wives named Mary. One is Mary E Jones. This matches Mary E Smith (Schmidt), reported i the 1870 census. In some genealogies, Benz Smith is reported as Benz Schmidt, the German form of his last name. This also matches the demographic of the St Charles area, where other German families lived. Notably the Mueller family, known there as Miller. On the other wife, Mary Jane Granbery, I can find no information and cannot see where she could have been married to William in the timeline of records we have. The 1850 census reports William's wife as Nancy, and the first child born about 1835. Note that Griffitt's genealogy above reports Mary Granbery did not died until 1887. If he is correct, then she and William were divorced before 1868, the approximate date when William married Mary Emily Smith. Maybe Mary Jany Granbery was the first wife married before 1835 and died before 1850. William might have also married her between the death of Nancy after abt 1865 and his marriage to Mary Smith about 1868. I have found no marriage records for William. Additionally, note also that even though Griffitt has this Mary E Smith married to William Jones, he reports William Jones as dying in 1860. This is before the birth of William Thomas Jones in 1875, who is supposedly the son of Mary and William Jones. In 1870, we find Mary has remarried and is now the wife of 61-year-old William Foote Jones. Their first child is named Foote, and was born in November 1869, so we can figure they married in late 1868 or early 1869. 1870 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 2 July, Prairie Township, PO St Charles, page 12, Hse/Fam #89 Jones, William F 61 M W Farmer $320 Real Estate $500 Personal b Virginia Jones, Mary E 28 F W Keeping House born Arkansas cannot read or write [b abt 1942] Jones, Lorinda 18 F W Farm Labor born Arkansas cannot read or write Jones, Foote 7mos M W born Arkansas November 1869 From the 1880 census, we know that Mary had one son, Henry Smith, with her first husband. This means Mary and Benz Smith were probably married about 1865. Foote Jones is already 10 years old in 1880, and the 1870 census tells us more exactly he was born in the November 1869. This would mean that the widowed Mary married William Jones in late 1868 or early 1869. We can figure, then, that Benz Smith died about 1868. In the 1900 census, Mary is a widow living in the household of her son William Thomas, recorded as Thomas, and his wife Mary Cochran. 1900 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 21 July, Prairie Township, District 7, page 15B, Hse #256, Fam #263 Jones, Thomas Head W M Jan 1875 25 married 5 years AR VA AR Farmer Owns Jones, Mary Wife W F Apr 1877 23 married 5 yrs 2 children/2 living MS MS MS Jones, Mary Mother W F Apr 1843 57 Widow 5 children/3 living AR Mass KY can read can write 1910 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 18 April, Prairie Township, District 15, page 2A, Hse/Fam #17 Jones, Thomas Head M W 35 2nd marriage Married 4 years AR VA AR Farmer, Owns Farm Jones, Cornnie Wife F W 34 1st Marriage Married 4 years 3 children/3 living MS MS MS (abt 1876) Jones, Mary Mother 67 Widow AR Mass KY (abt 1843) There was no burial memorial for Mary Emily, so I created one on Find a Grave. ---------------- Mary Emily Leverett Jones Birth Apr 1842 Arkansas, USA Death unknown Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA Burial Rowland Family Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA Mary Emily Leverett was the daughter of Ebenezer W Leverett and his wife Elizabeth, whose maiden name is not known. Ebenezer was from an old family in Massachusetts, but had moved to Kentucky where he and Elizabeth married. The Leverett family had moved from Kentucky to Arkansas with a residence period in Tennessee . Mary Emily was born in Arkansas and married a Germany Immigrant named Benz E Schmidt, who went by the English form of his name, as many did. They had married in Arkansas County and were enumerated as newlyweds in Prairie Township of the county, near the community of Ethel, in the 1850 census. Because of Mary's remarriage to William Foote Jones, Mary and her son Henry are buried in the cemetery of the Rowland-Jones farm in Ethel, Arkansas. This private cemetery does not have headstones but the graves were marked only by natural stones. The burial site of Benz Smith is unknown. Mary's death date is not known. When Bert registered for the WWI draft in September 1918, he and Clarice Terry were already married. I have not found a marriage record. U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 Bert Earl Lewis Residence RFD Marlow, Stephens County, Oklahoma Birth Date 12 Jun 1881 Farming Nearest Relative (wife) Clarice Lewis, RFD Marlow, Stephens, Oklahoma Tall, Medium Build, Brown Eyes, Grey Hair Registered 12 September 1918 Duncan, Stephens, Oklahoma Sigend Bert Earl Lewis In 1920, we find Bert with his wife Clarice Terry and their 2-year-old son Terry Stanton Lewis in the home of Clarice's parents. Their entries are mixed up. The names must have confused the enumerator. The Lewises are also given the surname of Tery (Terry), even though Burt (Bert) is correctly reported as a Son-in-law. He put Clarice's married surname Louis (Lewis) as her first name and kept the name Tery for all. Further he reported their son as a girl. 1920 Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 20 January, Richland Township, District 262, page 6A, Farm #75 Tery, Thomas D Head M W 63 GA SC SC Farmer Tery, Mattie Wife F W 62 NC NC NC Tery, Rama Son M W 15 OK US US Tery [Lewis], Louies [Clarice] Daughter F W 23 GA US US Tery [Lewis], Burt Son-in-Law M W 32 TX AL AL Tery [Lewis], Tery S Granddaughter [Grandson] F [M] W 2yrs 1mo OK US US 1940 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 11 April, Marlow Ward 4, District 69-21, page 1A, 212 West Cherokee St, Hse #62, Rents $10 Lewis, Bert E Head M W 57 Married Grade 8 b Texas same place in 1935 Grain Elevator Laborer [b abt 1883] Lewis, Clarice Wife F W 44 married H4 b Georgia same place in 1935 [b abt 1891] U.S., World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942 Bert Earl Lewis, age 59 Birth 12 Jun 1882 Gateville [sic, should be Gatesville (Cooke County)], Texas Residence 212 West Cherokee St, Marlow, Stephens, Oklahoma Telephone 272-J Contact Mrs J C Terrell, Muleshoe, Texas (sister) Employed Fort Sill, Lawton, Comanche, Oklahoma Signed Bert E Lewis Bert Lewis Birth Jun 12, 1881 Death Jun 1, 1969 Spouse Clarice M. We know from other sources that Emmett lived until 1944, so this means that Fred died before 1900. The other child must have been their first child. No fourth child was reported in the 1880 census, and the youngest child, Benford, was 4 years old. It is possible another child was born and died after 1880, But the first child reported in 1880 was Emmet, born about 1873. Since they married in October 1871, they probably had a child in 1872. 1900 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 18 June, New Market, Civil District 7, Enumeration District 47, page 11B, Hse #209, Fam #212 Lewis, John Head W M Jan 1824 76 Married 30 yrs TN TN TN Farmer Owns Lewis, Harriet E Wife W F Apr 1844 56 Married 30 yrs 4 children/2 living TN TN TN Lewis, Benford Son W M June 1876 23 [24] Single TN TN TN Farmer In 1910 Binford is reported in Knoxville, Tennessee, working as a "Car Repairer" in a Car Shop.
