John Lewis
Spouse Rebecca Hackney
Marriage 26 Mar 1844 Jefferson, Tennessee, USA
Ceremony by Robt (unreadable) Justice of the Peace
License issued 25 March 1844
Jefferson County Marriage Book p 20

Rebecca was apparently reprimanded by her Quaker Monthly Meeting in Jefferson
County for this marriage to a non-Quaker, though no record of the reprimand
has been found. The Women's Group of the Lost Creek Monthly Meeting of
Friends minutes record that Rebecca Lewis produce a letter acknowledging "her
outgoing marriage" (marriage outside the Friend's Society),

The odd thing is, this date is over a year after the marriage, 31 May 1845.

Five years later, they were enumerated in the 18560 census, with their first
child, William H.

Going by names in later records, the child C A above is Catherine Adeline, who
commonly went by Adeline and its nickname Addie. She signed her name on her
father's will as Addie Nance.. N E is Elizabeth, probably Nancy Elizabeth,
reported as Elizabeth in 1870. And M J is Mary Jane, reported in 1970 as Mary
and in 1980 as Jane. No Jane, Mary Jane or Mary was mentioned among surviving
children when her father write his will.

In 1866, John and Rebecca requested the Lost Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends
to accept their minor children as members, which they did.

Rachel died in about 1868. Their last child Franklin was reported age 3 in
1870, born in July 1867. In 1870, John was alone with all the children.

John was buried under the name J B Lewis in the Friends Cemetery near his
home. The grave marker says he died 11 November 1911. However, his wife was
a widow living with her son in th 1910 census.

John's will was written on 2 June 1909. All his heirs, including his wife
Harriett, signed the will, agreeing to the statement of inheritance.

Tennessee, Wills and Probate Records, 1779-2008
J B Lewis
Date of Will 2 Jun 1909, Jefferson County, Tennessee, USA
Inferred Death Year 1909
Wills and Settlements, Vol 3-4, 1826-1845, p 386

Ancestry reports the date of the will as the date of probate. Probate details
have not been found. The date of death on his grave in the Friends Cemetery
is in 1911, so the marker may have been up considerably later and the date
engraved was wrong. It is also the kind of error we have found in other cases
where a stonecutter got distracted and looked at a wrong line on an order. in
this case it looks like he repeated the 11 form the date in place of the 09
from the year. of death.
