Notes for Mary Jane LEWIS

Jane's name in not included among the names of the 7 children mentioned in
John's will. All the children were named twice, and then signed the will,
except Jane and Fred. This indicates these two died before the will was
written and signed 2 June 1909.

In 1860 Mary Jane was reported as 3 months old, under the name M A. In 1870,
she was Mary. In 1880, she was Jane. In 1860, if her age of 3 months is
correct, she was born in March 1860.

Notes for Oscar C LEWIS

Oscar was reported int eh 1865 New Yourstate census. His age was reported as 7
months. This would make his biorth about October 1864. The 1900 census
reported his birth date as September 1867, which is obviously wrong. The 1900
census is often wrong for some reason. Perhaps that month of Septemebr is
correct for some reason. It is unclear what the actual official census date
was. In 1865, the Lewis household was enumerated as house 7 on page 1 on 5
June 1865.

Notes for Pleasant Franklin LEWIS

In 1870, Frank's mother is not in the household. Rebecca Hackney Lewis died
about 1868, some time after or at Franklin's birth of in July 1867, Franklin
is usually referred to as Frank, with the first name only found as the initial
P, as on hiis gravestone. But in the 1910 census, his stepmother is reported
living in his household and he is listed in the census as Pleasant F Lewis,
filling out his name, which most genealogies lack.

There is a marriage record that matches Frank (Pleasant) and Altha closely,
but it is in Missouri. The groom in this record appears to be the son of John
B Lewis and Rebecca Hackney. But his middle initial here is E, while their
son's name was Pleasant Frank. The bride here is Alta J Clark, close to Altha
J or Altha S Clark reported for Pleasnt Franklin Lewis of Jefferson Co TN.
And we have no other record placing Frank & Altha in Missouri. Further this
record reports they married in February 1905, but the 1910 census reports that
Pleasant F and Altha J Lewis have been married 0 years (meaning they had been
married less than a year.

Notes for Rachel LEWIS

The record of Rachel Lewis' marriage to Henry Gregory and was originally
reported as Tennessee based on circumstantial information. Her maiden name
was unknown until May 2013, when the marriage record was found in Tennessee
records made available by Ancestry.com.

Her family was unknown, despite extensive periodic searches. Suddenly in
September 2016, several census records from 1850 to 1880 and some marriage
records in Jefferson County became visible on research indexes and revealed
they were living very close to Rachel and her husband James Henry Gregory in
Jefferson County, Tennessee.

Rachel's father was Henry Lewis, born also in Tennessee, and by some
indications, born in Jefferson County. Her mother was Mary Mills, born in
Virginia. Other Mills households are next door or nearby in the censuses.

In her marriage record, her name is spelled Rachel. In some records and
family genealogies it is spelled Rachael. This record gave me Henry's full
name, recording him as James H.

Census reports are inconsistent in reporting the age of Rachel.
1850 Cherokee County, Alabama, Federal Census indicates 21 years old (thus
born in 1829-30).
1860 Cherokee County, Alabama, Federal Census indicates 30 years old (thus
born in 1830).
1870 Jefferson County, Tennessee, Federal Census indicates 43 years old (thus
born in 1827).
1880 Jefferson County, Tennessee, Federal Census indicates 58 years old (thus
born in 1822).
1900 Jefferson County, Tennessee, Federal Census indicates 69 years old.
Actual birth month and year are reported in 1900 as June 1830.

The censuses indicate that Henry and Rachel moved to Alabama soon after they
married and their first daughter was born there in about 1848. Henry was born
in Tennessee and the Gregory family later moved back there, between 1860 and
1870. It would seem most likely that Henry and Rachel met when Henry was
still living in Tennessee, or when he had made a trip back from Tennessee for
some reason, and they married there, then moved to Cherokee County, Alabama.

Gregory family tradition also records a memory of another sibling of Dock
Gregory named Lynn. Censuses indicate no child by this name.

Other names in family tradition match with names found in censuses that seem
to correlate with the family of Dock Patrick Gregory's parents:
Bill = William
Jack = Andrew Jackson
Retta = Henrietta

I estimated the marriage in 1848, as an estimate based on the birth of their
first child. In the 1850 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, Julia A
is reported as 1 year old. The marriage record, found only in 2013, reported
the date as 20 November 1847.

It was only after years of searching without success that I finally in May
2013 I found a record reporting Rachel's maiden name. I found for the first a
death certificate for her son Andrew Jackson Gregory, reporting his mother as
Rachel Lewis, born in Tennessee. The death certificate reports that Andrew (A
J) died in Dandridge, but was buried in Taft. Taft is an unincorporated
community in Lincoln County, Tennessee. Lincoln is in South Central
Tennessee. Here her name is spelled Rachael.

Tennessee, Deaths and Burials Index, 1874-1955

Age 86, Death 10 Nov 1936 Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee
Burial 12 Nov 1936 Taft

The maiden name opened up a new avenue of searching which led to their
marriage record. This revealed that Henry's full name was James Henry.

After learning Rachel's (Rachael's) maiden name, I reviewed source
information, and found that in the 1960 census, the family enumerated next
door to Henry and Rachael Gregory was named Lewis. Examination of the family
configuration and ages suggested that Chrisman and Anna were the parents and
siblings of Rachael Lewis Gregory. Or perhaps Chrisman, at age 48, was an
older brother of Rachael, age 30 in 1860. A quick check on genealogies found
no child or sibling of Chrisman Lewis named Rachael/Rachel. Perhaps they were
cousins. Chrisman and Rachael were both born in Tennessee.

burial information. But as far as we know otherwise, Henry and Rachel never
moved away from Jefferson County, Tennessee.

Notes for Reece Franklin LEWIS

In 1929, Reece married Florence Dumond in DeWitt, Arkansas. He was living at
that time in Weona, in Poinsett County, near Jonesboro. No other records has
been found for Reece. Debra Whiddon's genealogy and one or two others have
his name as Reece Franklin Lewis.

His name later spelled Louis in records for Florence. It makes us think Reece
died soon after the marriage, but it could be he was working away and just
happened to miss the census in 1930 and 1940. That does not seem likely. No
death or burial record has been found for him. A death record for Florence is
provided by Whiddon, form Ellis County, Texas. But no burial record for
Florence has been found.

In 1930, Florence is reported as single, but with the surname of Louis. In
the 1940 census she is reported as married, but no word is there about her
missing husband.

Debra Whiddon has limited documentation, but seems to speak with the authority
of famly insight. And she has a couple of interestting and helpful records
attached. She links to what appears to be the correct WWII enlistment record
for Reece. This provdies a bit of insight, reporting his marital status as
Separated, with dependents.

U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946

Whiddon also provides additonal details on Reece and Florence's daughter
Marion, reporting her full name as Marion Janet and links her Social Security
record which reports her name as Marion J Whiddon.

U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014
Marion J. Whiddon
Born 23 Mar 1930
Died 6 Jun 1992
SSN 432-44-8245 issued Arkansas (Before 1951)

There is also a puzzling marriage record Whiddon references, which had not
come up in previous searches we have done, reported that Reece Lewis and
Florence Lewis, both of Dallas, Texas, married in Arkansas County, Arkansas,
in 1950. Could this have been a remarriage, as a renewal? Or after a divorce
we have found no record of?

There are indications of divorce in the 1930 and 1940 censuses where Florence
is reported under the name Louis, and as married in 1940, but with no husband
in the home. The Dallas residence correlates with Florence's later death
record in nearby Ellis County.

She links a burial record in Mississippi to Reece. The birth date for this
Reeece fits Florence Dumond's husband. Reece is buried in the same cemetery
with his parents and other Lewis family members, but Florence is not among
them. She has not been found among her Dumond famly in Arkansas either, nor
back in Ellis County, Texas, where a death record seems to be for her.
Folloiwng Whiddon, we will assume this is the correct Reece Lewis.

Notes for Sarah LEWIS

There is conflicting information about the wife of William Butler, Some sources
report her name as Mildred Lewis. There is little documentation in family
genealogies.

One source for a Mildred Lewis married to a William Butler reports them in the
wrong counties. This name for Isaac's mother appears to be from the
too-common simple association of first names without regard to any other
details, or perhaps as well, lack of further details at the time. William
Butler is too common a name.

Notes for Terry Stanton LEWIS

Terry was born in Oklahoma. I do not know when he moved to New Mexico. He was
issued his Social Security number in Oklahoma. So he was still in Oklahoma in
the 1930s. 1937 is the first year of the Social Security Death Index. Terry
and his wife Margarite lived in Albuquerque since I was a child. He was in
the US Air Force then the Navy, working at bases in Albuquerque.

I remember visiting them in Albuquerque at least once when I was a child. We
were there in 1956, when our family took a vacation through the western states
of the US. In adult life my wife and I visited them two or three times.

-- Application of Holmes Baldwin Strayer, residence Nashville, Tennessee,
Railway Postal Clerk, born New Market, Shanandoah County, Virginia 28 June
1871, SAR Membership Application #19830 3 Apr 1908

It is interesting that this SAR application reports that Thomas Lewis was born
in Donegal Province of Ireland. I do note that Donegal Province of Ireland
in the northermost part of Ireland, while Lewis, now under Scoottish
sovereignty, is the farthest western island of the outer Hebrides, close to
Ireland.

It is plausible there is association, since the Scots people are Irish who
migrated farther north and east across the islands and then on to Great
Britain. By that era the surname Lewis was pretty widespread. It is not
clear if the Irish name Lewis is associated with the Frankish name Louis
coming to us through French.

Wikipedia notes that the surname in English has several independent origins,
noting also "Region of origin England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland." While this
surname is the 4th common surname in Wales, it is only the 129th most common
in Scotland but is the 24th most common in the United States.

"Lewis is a surname in the English language. It has several independent
origins. One of the origins of the surname, in England and Wales, is from the
Norman personal name Lowis, Lodovicus. This name is from the post-Classical
Latin name Ludovicus meaning victorious in athletic games (ludus, game; vicus,
var. of victor, winner)."
-- "Lewis (surname)," Wikipedia,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_(surname)

Other sources report that the Isle of Lewis derives from the Gaelic name Lowis
Wikipedia refers to above, which in turn came to us through the Norman French.
This is the same name that appears in the German language form as Ludwig. The
note that the Latin form is "post-classical" is somewhat vague, and could even
then represent Germanic origins, since the German invasions began early, and
rulers of parts of Italy and even Rome go back as early as 410 CE.

Various Germanic names were introduced into the Hebrides and Ireland by the
Norse Vikings, who left a strong cultural and genetic legacy, memorialized in
clans or septs Like the McSwains and their variations of MacSweeney, Sweeney
and McQueen.

Another naming site confirms our own analysis of the name as of Germanic
origin, tying the name to the Frankish name Clovis, one of the early kings and
war chiefs of the Fanks.

"Meaning of Lewis: Lewis is an English variant of the name Louis, which is a
variant of the name Clovis, which is a French variant of the name Ludovicus,
which is a Latinized variant of the Germanic name Hluodowig, which is
comprised of the elements hluod "famous" and wig "war, strife"
