But Henry's father John died some time after the birth of his yougnest sister Sarah in about 1877 (age 3 in the 1880 census). The 1880 census reported Lucretia up north in Arkansas County, in Point DeLuce, near the White River, close to DeWitt. In this census Henry is still in his mother's household, but is reported both single and widowed. 1880 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 3 June, Point DeLuce, District 3, page 6, Hse #43, Fam #45 Long, Lucrtia [sic] W F 45 Head Widow Farmer OH England OH [b abt 1835] Long, Henry W M 21 Single/Widowed AR TN OH [b abt 1825] Long, William 19 Son W M Single AR TN OH [b abt 1861] Long, Mary 16 Dau W F Single AR TN OH [b abt 1864] Long, Lenard [sic] 13 Son W M Single AR TN OH [b abt 1867] Long, Liddie 5 Dau W F Single AR TN OH [b abt 1875] Long, Katie 5 Dau W F Single AR TN OH [b abt 1875] Long, Sarah 3 Dau W F Single AR TN OH [b abt 1877] Arkansas, County Marriages Index, 1837-1957 Mary E Harris Age 17 (born abt 1874) Residence De Luce, Arkansas, Arkansas Spouse's Name N F Long Spouse's Age 32 (born abt 1859 Spouse's Residence De Luce, Arkansas, Arkansas Marriage 3 Sep 1891 Arkansas County Marriage License Date 3 Sep 1891 The age on the index marriage record matches the age reported for Mary E Harris in the 1880 census. Her husband's name here, however, is only the initials N F, not Henry. But I suspect the original had H F, which was misread by the transcriber. From the 1600s till roughly 1900, it was common to write H with an upstroke from the bottom of the first stem to the top of the lst stem. It looked different from an N, however, with the inner stroke goig up to the left, oppostie the N. We have no access to the original handwritten record. The 1900 census enumerated Mollie Long with her husband Henry next door to her parents, George and Theresa Harris. But her husband is named Henry Long, and his birth date is reported as April 1870, age 30. That is younger than the age in the above marriage record, with birth 10 years later than we expect from the marriage record. Was N F Long of that marrige record a different person from Henry Long of the 1900 census? Or did the clerk make a 10-yeaar error in recording NF's (Henry's) age? The 1910 census records marriage information. In that census, Mollie's husband is reported as Henry F Long, matching our expectation for the husband of the marriage record, assuming the script H was mistaken by the transcriber for an N. Henry's age is reported as 51, making birth about 1859, matching the age reported in the marriage record. In the 1900 census Henry and Mollie were enumerated in the LaGrue Township of Arkansas County, next door to her parents. 1900 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 27 June, Point DeLuce, District 4, page 21A, Hse #408, Fam #415 Long, Henry W M Apr 1870 30 Married 9 yrs [mar abt 1881] AR TN OH Farmer Rents Long, Mollie Wife W F May 1874 26 Married 9 yrs 2 children/1 living AR AR AR Long, Arthur Son W M June 1891 8 Single AR AR AR 1910 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 27 April, Point DeLuce Township, District 11, page 9A, Hse/Fam #155 Long, Henry F Head M W 51 2nd Marriage Married 17 years AR TN OH Farmer Long, Mollie Wife F W 36 1st Marriage Married 17 years Borne 4 children, 3 living AR AR AR Long, Arthur Son M W 17 Single AR AR AR Home Long, Edward C Son M W 12 AR AR AR Home Long, Bertha Dau F W 9 (?) In 1880, after the death of her stepfather William Peter Christian, Joan Lee Long is reproted by the enumerator with her mother's last married name. It appears from a couple of minimally-documented but seemingly-credible family genealogies and families around them in the censuses that Elizabeth Long's maiden name was Dickerson. In 1920 her son William is living next door to a family named Dickerson, and in his household is one Eliza Dickerson, age 15 years older than William. 1880 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 18 June, Precinct 6, District 15, page 29 (scan 205), Hse/Fam #11 Christian, Elizabeth W F 57 (Head) Keeping House AL NC NC [b abt 1843] Christian [Long], Edgar W M 19 Son Single Farm Hand TX SC AL [b abt 1861] Christian [Long], Joan Lee W F 16 Dau Single At Home TX SC AL [abt 1864] Texas, Select County Marriage Index, 1837-1977 Lee Long Gender Female Marriage 24 Jul 1888 Cass, Texas Spouse J H Tate 1900 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 5 June, Justice Precinct 6, District 28, page 83A (283A), Hse/Family # 31 Christian, Elizabeth Head W F Nov 1826 73 Widowed Married 48 yrs [incl 2 marriages] 2 children/2 living AL AL AL Farmer Long, William Son W M Mar 1861 39 Single TX AL AL Farm Laborer Tate, Lee Daughter W F Aug 1863 36 Widowed Married 12 yrs [mar abt 1888] 1 child/1 living TX AL AL House Keeper Tate, Cora Granddaughter W F July 1890 9 Single TX AL TX Ransom, Giles Servant B M May 1875 Widowed 25 TX AL AL Farm Laborer Even though Lea (Lee) was reported as a widow in 1900, when she and her daughter were living in her mother's home, in 1910 she was back with her husband John H Tate.
