Mary is listed with the initial P, which matches some genealogy reports that
her middle name was Polly. Some genealogy sources indicate that Polly was a
nickname, rather than a middle name.

I see that the ages of five children are two or three years off. Even though
the census month is the same in both censuses, since 1850, James and William
(Willis in 1850) have aged 13 years. Sarah, Judea [Judah, =Judith] have aged
12 years and Benjamin shows an age increase of 11 years since 1850.

Lovelace, Benjamin 21 M W Farmer born North Carolina Married Aug 1870 [b abt

Lovelace, Parmelia 20 F W Keeping House born North Carolina [b abt 1848]

This census tells us that Benjamin married Parmelia in Aug 1870. I find it
interesting that the children are reported as having attended school, but as
being illiterate. In 1860 Mary was the only person in the family reported as
unable to read or write, but that census specified only illiterate persons
over 20.

I am unclear who the J R Green here is. The son Joseph of Reuben H Green and
Judith McSwain Green (Mary's sister) is reported in his parents' household,
and is 10 years old.

The ages in the 1870 census make Asa and Mary 10 years older than the birth
dates reported in one of the genealogies I reference for dates. The ages
reported in 1860 match the birth dates given by Cornwell. The following exact
birth dates are given for them by Matt Cornwell:
Asa Lovelace born 09 Aug 1817 died 1 Feb 1887
Mary (Polly) Green born 24 Nov 1818 died 31 Dec 1899

There are several other Lovelace households reported on this same page of the
census.  Next door to Asa and Mary in House #19 are J L (age 28) and P J (22);
next to them in House #20 are Berry (38) and Mary (36); two doors from them
are James (55) and Judah (56, Judith in 1880, and age 66).

In 1880, one notable difference is that now John R appears with the last name
of Lovelace instead of Green. This probably means that the Lovelaces adopted
him. His relationship is reported here, as I had speculated above, as a
Nephew of Asa (probably of Mary), but I have still not been able to connect
him with a specific set of parents. And in this census, the ages are
corrected, with Asa showing a 1-year increase in age and Mary the same age!

Notes for Judith LOVELACE

A genealogy tells us that Judith married Lovelace William Padgett In 1867. I
have not found their marriage record. If this year is correct, it had to be
the first few days of January, because their daughter was born in September
1867.

Zechariah R McKinney. It appears from the marriage information that this
Lucinda and Zechariah in the census are married. It seems likely that this
should have been Zechariah and Lucinda McKinney, but it is not certain.

In 1880 Mary is reported living in the household of her son Asa.

'Point Lookout, Maryland, located in Saint Mary's County, Maryland on the
southern tip of the peninsula was deemed the largest and worst Northern POW
camp. Point Lookout was constructed of fourteen foot high wooden walls.
These walls surrounded an area of about 40 acres. A walkway surrounded the
top of the walls where negro guards walked day and night. It is reported the
guards were brutal in their treatment of prisoners. Prisoner, John R. King
said; 'Two days out of every three we were guarded by a gang of ignorant and
cruelsome negroes. Please do not think that I dislike the negroes as a race.
Many of them are my friends, but the negroes authority over the white people
and the defenceless prisoners suffered at their hands. Numbers of scars were
left on the frame work of the closets made by negroes firing at the prisoners.
The negro guard was very insolent and delighted in tantalizing the prisoners,
for some trifle affair, we were often accused of disobedience and they would
say, 'Look out, white man, the bottom rail is on top now, so you had better be
careful for my gun has been wanting to smoke at you all day!'"'
-- Point Lookout Civil War Prison,
http://www.censusdiggins.com/prison_ptlookout.html

A special Point Lookout Cemetery was established for Confederate prisoners of
war who died in the camp.

"During the Civil War, Point Lookout was one of the largest prisons of CSA
POWs. Many men died there from exposure, malaria, scurvy and TB. Originally,
the soldiers were buried in two cemeteries near the prison camp. However,
because the cemetery land started to erode into the Chesapeake, in 1870 the
state of Maryland removed the remains. In 1910 they were moved again and
re-interred in a burial trench one mile inland, near where a federal monument
was constructed that year. The 80-foot granite obelisk marks the site, just
outside Point Lookout State Park, but the actual boundaries of the pit are not
marked."

Notes for Anna J LOVETT

Records for anna Roberts were hard to find. Continued searching in creative
ways finally turned up a death certificate in Delaware County for Anna Roberts
Jones, daughter of Robert P Lovett, in Newton Township in 1956. Anna was
reported as widowed and a resident of Wayne Pennsylvania, living with her
daughter identified as the informant on her death certificate under the name
of Mrs A D Spillman, of the same residence address.

Anna married Samuel Jones some time after the death of Sam's longtime first
wife Florence Moore in 1852. Sam's obituary reported he was survived by his
wife, the former Anna Roberts, the normal formula to commonly report a wife's
maiden name. This death certificate informs us, however, that Roberts was her
first married name and her maiden name was Lovett. No information has been
found on either marriage for Anna.

Records of Anna and Evan's marriage is found in the Frends records for Fallas

Notes for Elva Jean LOVETT

I have not determined defintely Elva Jean's birth date. The 1900 census
reprots the date of April 1860, genealogies generally report the year of 1861,
which seems to fit better with other census ages.

Someone has transcribed a portion of the Kaufman County Marriage record to
give us the entries for Elva Jean and other members of her family. This
transcriber gives us additionally Elva's middle name, which is attested in the
census only as Elva J and the marriage record also has her name as Elvy J. I
notice that the transcriber has given her name as Jane. A family genealogy
posting this list has added the full name, with the middle name as Jean.
