Bailey's name and his father's are sometimes spelled Baily in public records. Family sources consistently spell the name Bailey. There were earlier Baileys in this lineage, one participating in the Revolutionary War. The first public record I have found of Bailey/Baily Cook Lovin is a land certificate date 1 September 1848. Bailey C Lovin is shown as having paid for a 150-acre tract of public lands being sold under an act of congress in Carroll County, Mississippi. The sale is registered in the Land Office at Columbus, Mississippi. I do not have information on the first wife of Bailey Cook Lovin. The children are evenly spaced at about 2 years apart, except for Louvica (Lucretia) and Alelial (Abigail), so there is no clear clue here as to when the first wife might have died. But we can estimate that Martha might have married Bailey when she was from 18 to 20 years old. William is the first child likely to have been Martha's, as she would have been about 18 when he was born, perhaps marrying when she was 17. We can guess that likely the three youngest children are the children of Martha. Bailey and Martha are included in the list of generations in the Lovin Family Bible. Lovin family tradition holds that the Lovins are English and Irish. This information comes to us through Tom Sims, whose aunt transmitted it to him from her memory of hearing Baily Edward Lovin say this. "B.E. (Bailey Edward) said he was English and Irish. He was redheaded. Walter (B.E.'s son) and two of his sisters (B.E.'s daughters) were redheads. B.E. did the land run and picked a spot in Norman OK, sold it, and moved to Ada where he married a preacher's daughter. He was also Mayor. Died in Allen OK. This information provided by the aunt of Tom Sims (great-grandson of B.E.). We are not sure which aunt." -- jcld123, on Cherry/Holt/Lovin/White Family Tree, ancestry.com, 05 Feb 2009 Bailey Edward Lovin is listed as Eddie Lovin in the 1880 census with his family in Hunt County, Texas. Bailey and his younger brother James Henry were born in Mississippi before his father moved the family to Texas. We can see from the census that their sister Ada was born in Texas in about 1874. Henry was born about 1870, so they moved to Texas between 1870 and 1874. 1880 Federal Census, Hunt County, Texas, 16 June, Precinct 6, District 71, Pages 561D-562A, Hse #136. Yet the mother of all the children is reported as born in Kentucky as Elizabeth's mother. This is surely an enumerator error. He likely did not write down the birth place of the children's mother at the time, and went back and absent-mindedly copied the birth place of the mother from the previous line. But then it happens again with the report for Walter's mother in the next household. Bailey J of 1910 is now listed as Jack. This tells us his middle initial J was perhaps John, or Jack, which had become a name in its own right, and not just the common nickname for the formal name John. In 2014, I found a family genealogy that reported his middle name as Jackson, which would also lead to a nickname of Jack. The middle name is not documented in any record I have found, and but neither is it in the genealogy. But i discovered that Elizabeth's mother's name was Jackson. So Jackson as a middle name makes sense. The child that appeared to be called Henery M in 1910 is now called Mart. The names in the 1910 census were faded in streaks, so hard to read. If the name was really entered as Henery, since the name had the initial M, this child's full name is likely Henry Martin, called Mart here. The child matching "Lady" of 1910 is called Isabelle here. That makes sense but is interesting, in light of the name of the last child, age 7, Ladelle, for which "Lady" could be a nickname. Son Walter is living next door, but the enumerator has written his name as Watler. Walter's mother is reported as born in Kentucky instead of Illinois. 1920 Federal Census, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, 5 January, Allen City, District 166, page 6A, Hse #121, Fam #144 Lovin, Watler [sic] Head Owns M W 27 OK MS KY Salesman, Dry Goods Store Lovin, Minnie Wife F W 25 OK AR AR Lovin, Vernon Dau F W 6 OK OK AR Lovin, Catherine Dau F W 5 OK OK AR Lovin, No Name Dau F W 7mos OK OK AR [b May 1919] By 1930, Bailey Edward has moved from dry goods to groceries in the same town, and his wife Elizabeth also works in the store. Bailey's parents were in Merced County around that time, not far from Bakersfield, which is in Kern County. But one genealogy reports his middle name as Jackson instead of John, which would also yield the nickname Jack. No documentation was offered by the genealogy. But I discovered that his maternal grandmother's maiden name was Jackson. So Jackson as a middle name makes sense. Right after that I found his WWI draft registration, which had never come up before in any searches. This has his full name as Bailey Jackson Lovin, with his signature of the full name. The California listing is from the 1929 City Directory for Bakersfield, at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. Benjamin Franklin Lovin, Jr, was born 28 July 1890, according to family sources reported in genealogies. This is the birth date given also in his WWI Draft Registration card. He is reported as born in Washita, which is a town in Caddo County. The 1900 census reports he and the other children of Benjamin and Mattie Lovin were born in Indian Territory. However, Caddo County was in Oklahoma Territory, not Indian Territory, and became Caddo County of the State of Oklahoma. He is first recorded with his parents in the 1900 census for Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma Territory. We are told he was born in Indian Territory. It seems this was in Chickasaw Nation. In 1900 we find his two older half-brothers Edward and James Henry living in Township 4 of Chickasaw Nation. According to this census, Ben's two older sisters Mattie and Anna were also born in Indian Territory. 1900 Federal Census, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma Territory, 25 June, Burnett Township, District 194, page 15B, Hse/Fam #278 Lovin, Benjamin F Head W M May 1850 50 Married 25 yrs MS MS MS Lovin, Lucinda P Wife W F June 1852 47 Married 25 yrs AR MS MS Lovin, Benjamin F Son W M Aug 1891 9 Ind Terr MS AR In 1910, B F married Ruby M Lakin. The only child is reported in a genealogy associated with a family photo as Clyde. He appears to be about 3 or 4 in the photo. But Clyde is reported in Ben's household in 1920 as 8 years old. The only other child is a 1-month-old baby named Clarence, presumably the child of the wife reported in 1920, Ida May Dillingham. There is another discrepancy with the report of children and the divorce from Ruby. In 1917 when B F registered for the draft, he was single. Ben is working in the Houston area, in the town of Gladsell, Texas. So that photo of Ben and Ruby with one son may have been taken before they were divorced in 1917 or earlier. In the Draft registration he reports his mother and "one child," presumably his child, are dependent on him. His Draft Registration provides some missing personal details. Note that he is living in Liberty County, Texas. Benjamin Franklin Lovin was Baptist preacher, as was his son James Henry. --------------------------------------------- Jerry Cherry comments that the family moved around a lot, due to Ben's pastoral calling. He comments also in regard to Pink Brewer, that she was part or full Native American, which would mean, of course, that one or both her parents were also: "We have reason to believe that she is either full or part Native American. She had a sister named Lieu (or Lou) and possibly a brother named Oscar. Henry is James Henry Lovin, who became a preacher like his father. He was born on 1 March 1869 in Holmes County, Mississippi. That genealogy reports an exact birth date for Ben as 10 Mar 1848. But in the 1900 census, the birth month and year are recorded as May 1850. The enumerator's hand is somewhat scribbly, so the month could be Mar instead of May, but the year is clearly 1850, which also matches his reported age as 50. The 1910 report, though, correctly reports his age consistent with birth in 1848. Note that the report for the last two children show that their mother was born in Arkansas. This would match the birth place of Lucinda Pink Brewer, 2nd wife of Benjamin. The mother of the first two was born in Mississippi, but both these children, Mattie and Anna, were also born after the death of Isabella Wiggley and the marriage of Ben to Lucinda. So it appears the mother of all the children listed here should have been born in Arkansas. "My husband, Jerry Cherry, is the grandson of Minnie Mae Lovin, the youngest of B.F.
