Notes for Octavia LOWREY

A nephew, Ken McSwain, contributes these personal notes about Octavia:
"I remember Aunt Octavia [my Dad's Aunt]. In the '40's she used to come for
week long visits when we lived at Old River Club at Scott AR. She was a County
Health Nurse in North Arkansas. She compiled the genealogy and gave copies to
Aunt Ruth, My dad Wirt, and others. "

Information from Octavia's genealogy, kindly contributed by Ken, is included
in this genealogy.

Notes for Ruth L LOWREY

The name is spelled as Lowry in some sources; Some sources spell it Lowery.
This is the spelling favored in the family genealogy by Octavia Lowrey. The
gravestone has Lawery: Ruth Lawery McSwain.

Censuses indicate that her father was born in Indiana and her mother in
Arkansas.

In 1900, her birth date is reported as May 1888, a year later than the date on
her tombstone.

Stella died in 1914, and was buried in Mt Pleasant Cemetery in Ethel,
Arkansas, near the family's home.

Notice that this census reports Ruth as born in Arkansas, while the previous
census and next census report her as born in Indian Territory/Oklahoma.
Ruth's father John was born in Indiana and her mother, Sallie Padgett, was
born in Arkansas. From the census, other documents and family information we
have, John and Sallie moved from Arkansas to Texas after the birth of their
first child Kate Lowry in 1875.

The second child Tilley Wirt Lowrey was born in Texas, then all the other
children were born in Indian Territory. The family moved to Indian Territory
(later Oklahoma) between 1883 and 1884, being in Indian Territory for the
birth of the third child Susie Lowry on 4 May 1885. Ruth was born there on 30
May 1887. The two younger children were born in the Territory also, Octavia
in 1890 and Lucille in 1897, before the family moved back to Arkansas, where
they are recorded in the 1900 census back in Ethel, Arkansas.

By 1920 all their children are out of the home.

The census seems to indicate that her middle initial was L, standing for her
maiden name. I found also that her sister was reported as Susie L McSwain in
the 1910 census, though 1920 reports her with her correct middle initial Susie
F for Frances.

Ruth's gravestone reports her birth date as 30 May 1887, but her sister
Octavia, in her list of family details, reports the date as 29 May 1887.
Octavia adds the place of birth as Wewoka, Indian Territory, the same as for
their sister Susan Francis (Susie)

Notes for Susan Frances LOWREY

Different public and family sources have the name spelled differently. In her
formal listing of family information, Bertie Lois Dumond McSwain spelled the
name Lowrey. But in her letters and in spelling it orally in a family
discussion, she spelled it Lowry.

In the Essex Funeral Home registry, there is a listing for a T W Lowrey (Book
VI, 85). This is Susie's brother Tilley Wirt Lowrey. We find the family name
spelled that way in Wirt's usage and that of his son, Tilley Wirt Lowrey, Jr.

Susie Frances Lowry's grandson Roger Louis McSwain, son of Louis Wirt McSwain,
found that Susie's family name was spelled Lowrey on his father's birth
certificate.

We see his full name for the first time: Tilley Wirt Lowrey. Note the
difference in the spelling of the surname. All the family sources spell it
Lowry, as do all the censuses I have seen. However, on his sister Ruth's
gravestone, the name is spelled Lawery.

This source gives us his full birth date, Dec 29, 1882. This date was later
confirmed by the Lowrey family genealogy compiled by Wirt's aunt Octavia.
"Dec 29 1882 Tilley Wirt, at Belleview, Texas"
-- Lowrey-Wirt Genealogy, by Octavia Lowery

Wirt's draft registration for WWII reports this place of birth.

U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946
Tilley Wirt Lowrey
born Dec 29, 1882, in Belleview, Texas [no county reported]
residence DeWitt, Arkansas, Arkansas

There is a bit of confusion on the birth place. The registration card itself
(as well as Octavia's report) reports his birthplace as Belleview, Texas.
This is a town in McLennan County, near Waco. However, Ancestry.com in
representing the information on the card, has listed the birthplace as
Bellevue. This might be taken as a spelling error in the transcription. But
this spelling is the name of a town in Texas, also, but it is in Clay County,
up north near the Red River.

Learning this made me wonder if Ancestry knew something we did not know.
Perhaps the batch of cards was identified as coming from Bellevue, though the
person filling the card spelled it Belleview. We know that after about three
years in Texas, Wirt's parent's moved north over the border into Indian
Territory. I have not yet discovered exactly where.

I have found that there were a good number of Lowrys living in that area of
north Texas. There are still some prominent families in north Texas named
Lowry. Some genealogies are available that report on families there at the
time John and Sallie were there. It is possible that John and Sallie moved to
Clay County near some of his kinfolks who had moved down there from Indiana,
while his family had moved to Arkansas. For some reason they were not
satisfied there and moved north along with a flood of other European North
Texas settlers into Oklahoma Territory or Indian Territory.

Wirt's residence at the time he registered for the draft was DeWitt, Arkansas
County, Arkansas. The card does not give the name of his wife, who is
referred only as Mrs. T W Lowrey. He igned the card as T W Lowrey.

Notes for James LOWRY

This James Lowry was the third son of the elder James Lowry of Ballynagorry.
His son was also James Lowry, who emigrated to the United States, first to
Pennsylvania, then to Georgia.
Return to James LOWRY

Notes for James LOWRY

James and his family are mentioned on the official website of County Tyrone,
Ireland. There are probably three more generations before this James back to
the Laurie ancestor who moved from Dumfries, Scotland. They would have been
part of the migration originally sponsored by King James VI of Scotland and I
of England to move Scots to Northern Ireland. The descendants of these
settlers became the Scots-Irish (called Scotch-Irish in the New World after
their later mass migration there).

James Lowry of Ballynagorry, County Tyrone, Ulster, (Northern) Ireland

The History of the Two Ulster Manors of Finagh, Co. Tyrone and Coole,
otherwise Manor Atkinson, Co. Fermanagh, and of their owners.
Author - Lord Belmore, pub. Longmans, Green & Co London 1881
Transcribed by Robyn Paterson

CHAPTER II. - James, John & Robert Lowry, Sen., 1665-1729

Having traced the history of Fynagh from the Plantation of Ulster to the year
1705-6, when it came into possession of my family, this will be a convenient
point for stating the previous history of the family. The first member of it
concerning whom I have any authentic record, or indeed anything beyond mere
tradition, was James Lowry who died intestate. In the year 1665 letters of
administration were granted to his eldest son and heir John Lowry. James is
described as of Ballynagorry co. Tyrone. I have heard that there is a Townland
of that name in the neighbourhood of Strabane.

This is all that I positively know about him. The tradition is that he was a
younger son of the family of Laurie of Maxwelton, Dumfries in Scotland. His
son John had two wives; the first was Mary Buchanan, by whom he had two sons,
viz.- Robert the purchaser of Fynagh; and John who appears at one time to have
lived in the county Louth, to have married Mary daughter of Henry Townley,
esq., of Aclare, co. Louth, widow of a Mr Foulkes, and to have died about 1698
without issue. His widow married thirdly James Somerville, esq.
...

He bequeathed in trust to his son-in-law Daniel Eccles, and to Alexander
M´Clintock as executors, the town and lands of (Aghenis) Ballyboy, and about
eight acres in the Townland of Loughmacnab, Killygivin, Tullyancolgan,
Lissaaggan, Kiladerry, Legacorry, Beagh, Letterfearne, Arvallee, Edenderry,
the truck mill and corn mill, Garvaghlees, Aghagallon, Mullagh, Cranny,
Drumgrane, Taltymulmoney, Benefargan, Hallaghan, Hillinana, Cormackellagher,
Lisneadin, Backarrenbeg, Tullyenangh and Cornebrecken, to his second surviving
son Galbraith Lowry for his life, with remainder to his heirs male.

Failing them to his third surviving son James Lowry and his heirs male, and
failing James to Robert, failing male issue of the three sons to the eldest
daughter of Galbraith and her heirs male, failing her to her sisters in
succession, and their heirs male. Their husbands to take the surname and arms
of Lowry. Failing Galbraith´s daughters to James´s daughters under like
conditions. To James Lowry his third son for life, and his heir´s male, the
manor townlands and ballyboes in Altadesart otherwise Chichester, lying and
being in the Barony of Dungannon. Failing James to Galbraith and his heir´s
male, failing him to Robert and his heir´s male.
