Notes for Benjamin MCSWAIN

I have not reconstructed the parentage of Benjamin fully, but he is connected
to a different line of McSwains than the main clan in Tryon-Rutherford, North
Carolina. It appears this Benjamin comes from Baltimore in another early line
of McSwains. Details are limited. A couple of genealogies are helpful. It
appears that Ben's parents were David McSwain and Hannah Jones. David was
born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, then his family moved to Baltimore,
Maryland.
-- http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=edhellis&id=I09603

It is possible he is a son of the Benjamin McSwain born 1766, son of William
David McSwain and Susanna Hamrick. I have not been able to find a marriage
for the elder Benjamin or parentage for the younger. The location would
match.

Note that records show Benjamin McSwain born about 1772 to 1782, and Rebecca
(Rabakah) Smith born about 1790. The discrepancy in their ages likely
indicates this is a second marriage for Benjamin, but I have not found an
earlier marriage for that Benjamin.

The date of 1772 comes from one or more undocumented genealogies, so
confidence for that date is very low. It is likely there is a generation
missing somewhere, and there was another Benjamin McSwain in between.
Censuses matching him place his birth about 1782 or 1783. This would match
better with Rebecca Smith's birth in about 1790, also supported by census
reports.

I found a marriage record and bond record that matches these names, but note
below that the date of marriage is 1810. Ben is reported in some sources as
born in 1772. The 1850 census for Ben and Rebecca reports an age making Ben
born in 1782, which is more reasonable. In the 1860 census, several children
age only 4 years since 1850!

Notes for Benjamin MCSWAIN

There is frustratingly little information available on the early American
generations of the McSwains. The genealogies are just repeats of the bare
info. Most have only the name and birth date, no wife or other details.

-------------------
Some may have confused this Benjamin McSwain with one born about 1777 or
later, who married a Rebecca Smith born about 1790. the discrepancy in their
ages seems to indicate this is a second marriage for Benjamin, but I have not
found an earlier marriage for that Benjamin.

Notes for Benjamin Franklin MCSWAIN

Benjamin Franklin McSwain is from a line of McSwains from Isle of Skye who
migrated directly from Skye to Baltimore. Though all McSwains come from the
Isle of Skye, B F is in a different line of McSwains from the dominant clan in
Tryon-Rutherford County, North Carolina, which this genealogy documents.

These original McSwain settlers in North Carolina came through Pennsylvania
and Virginia to the Tryon-Rutherford area before a son of the Baltimore family
came to that area. The two lines merged there as the newcomer McSwains began
marrying into the same other prominent families as the old McSwain line:
Hamricks, Greens (also spelled Greene) and Moores. Other families that
married with these families and the McSwains are the Bridges and Bosticks.
Padgetts also figure into this, as shown in my genealogy, especially in the
western branch in Tennessee and Arkansas.

Children and grand-children of William David McSwain and Judith Moore married
members of this broad Green-Moore family and members of both McSwain families.

After the death of his first wife Nancy Green, Benjamin Franklin McSwain
married Judith Green. The Hamrick Data pages provide us with a list of their
children.

----------child: McSwain, Margaret (*1862 - )
----------child: McSwain, Joseph Embolden (*1865 - )
----------child: McSwain, Benjamin Bussie (~1884 - ~1951)

Note that birth dates are mostly unknown, with several having the same date,
about 1862. Some genealigies have Benjanin Bussie's name as Benjamin Buster.

In the 1860 census, Ben is reported with his second wife Judith Green, Nancy's
cousin. Judith is reported as Juda, and I have found some genealogies follow
this entry for her name. She is reported as 21 years old, but family sources
give us her birthday as 18 July 1837, so she is actually 23. The household
includes Nancy's three children, George, Berry and Nancy.

It appears that the child called Louisa Jane in the Hamrick Data is the
daughter enumerated in 1880 as Lourilla. The handwriting of the name Lourilla
is very distinct and could not be mistaken for Louisa, but there is no middle
name or initial to provide a further clue. Isaac L here matches the child
Lenard in the Hamrick list. And he matches Isaac L in the 1870 census. We
may take this to mean the full name is Isaac Lenard/Leonard McSwain

Mary E is probably Mary Ellen, matching Ellen in the Hamrick list. Joseph E
is listed with his full name in the Hamrick Data as Joseph Embolden. I have
not found a child in the censuses to match Candas. Benjamin Bussie is an
additional child born after the 1880 census.

There is no child in the Hamrick list to match Nancy G, age 18in 1870 and age
28 in the 1880 census. She would have been born about 1852, but that was
while Ben was married to his first wife Nancy. But no child named Nancy
appears in the 1860 census with Ben and Juda (Judith). Yet she is reported as
a daughter of Ben in the 1880 census.

Notes for Bennie Dean MCSWAIN

Bennie Dean McSwain is the son of one of the original immigrants from North
Carolina to Arkansas County, Arkansas. His parents were Phillip K and Martha
McSwain, both born in North Carolina, though t appears they did not marry till
after the McSwains' arrival in Arkansas. (The 1930 census errs for some
reason in reporting Bennie's mother born in South Carolina, while his father
was born in North Carolina.)

He is listed in the 1900 census as Benjamin and as Ben in 1910. But all other
records refer to him as Bennie or Bennie D. His granddaughter reports that
his name was actually Bennie Dean, not Benjamin Dean as we would expect. He
went by Bennie all his life, and this is the name on his gravestone. His
middle name Dean was found in his WWI Draft Registration information. His
granddaughter confirmed it in correspondence several years later.

"My parents were Bennie Dean McSwain Jr (not Benjamin) and Jennie Claire
(Dudley) McSwain. ... My grandfather Bennie Dean McSwain (not Benjamin) - his
birth certificate says he was an orphan. My brother is Edward Dean McSwain."
-- Jeanie McSwain Hardey, Geneanet Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14
February 2017

Note that Jeanie also says Bennie Dean his birth certificate reported that he
was an orphan. This would indicate that his parents adopted him. But I also
note that both his parents died when he was a young man. His father died in
when Bennie was about 21 and his mother died the next year.

Phillip and all his brothers appear in the Giles County, Tennessee, in the
1870 census, and no wives are with them. Since that census did not report
marital status, it is not certain, but it appears they were all still single.

In 1900 he is listed as Benjamin. The 1900 census tells us he was born in
Arkansas in June 1886. This matches other sources for his date of death.

Bennie was reported as 24 years old in the April 1910 census, but his birthday
as reported from family and public sources is 23 June 1886. So he had not yet
had his 24th birthday. I recall in this regard that the 1900 census had
reported his birthday as February 1886, which would make him already 24 in
April 1910.

Bennie was still in Ethel, Arkansas (Prairie township) when he registered for
the WWI Draft. The registration took place in St Charles on 5 June 1917. He
is reported as married, but his wife's name is not given on the registration.
This card reports that he was born in Ethel, and now lives in Ethel, working
as a Farmer on 3 acres of cotton.

In the 1920 census, Bennie has married Nona Rownd, from a neighboring family
in Prairie Township, Arkansas County. They were living in Little Rock, then
for the 1930 census they were reported in Memphis, Tennessee.

In 1960 they had all moved to Enid, Oklahoma, and Nona was reported simply as
Mrs Mary W McSwain. The 1953 and 1960 directories were found only in April
2019, and introduce a mystery. It had been thought they moved to California
California some time after the 1951 directory. His burial marlker in Ethel,
Arkansas reports the year of death as 1969, matching his Social Security
record. Since Mary was reproted as a widow in 1953, and reported as Mrs Mary
W McSwain with no husband in 1960, they must have divorced about 1952.
However, I have not heard or read any family referrence to a divorce. No
record has been found.

Bennie Dean McSwain Sr, of Ethel, Arkansas, was the son of Phillip K McSwain
and Martha Elizabeth Padgett, originally from North Carolina, settlers in the
White River area of Arkansas called Ethel before the 1880 census. He was
called Bennie D. His granddaughter says his name was just Bennie, not
Benjamin, as some records have, and as Bennie D's sister-in-law reports.

He married Mary Winona Rownd of the Ethel community, who went by the nickname
Nona. They moved to Little Rock some time before 1937, when they were reported
in the city directory. Their son Bennie Dean Jr, unmarried at that time, was
also reported.

Bennie Dean registered for WWII in Little Rock and he and Nona were again
reported in the 1951 Little Rock City Directory, with Bennie Jr and his wife
Jennie (Dudley). Then in 1953, Bennie Dean Sr was no longer listed and Nona
was reported as the widow of Bennie D.

But Bennie d had not died. He moved to California, where he died in 1969. He
and Nona must have divorced, though no record has been found. Perhaps they
just separated about 1952 and just never formalized it legally. In 1960,
Winona, as well as her son Bennie Dean and his wife Jennie (Dudley), were
reported in the Enid, Oklahoma, directory, and they later moved to Aurora,
Colorado, where all three died.

Bennie Dean Sr and Nona are buried in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery in their home
community of Ethel, Arkansas. Bennie Dean's gravestone is very simple, having
only his name and the years of birth and death.

Notes for Bennie Dean MCSWAIN

Bennie D McSwain, Jr went by Bennie all his life,. His granddaughhter says
this was his given name, not Benjamin, as the 1900 census reported for his
father. The name of both father and son in the Social Security Death Index is
simply Bennie.

We have the name Bennie D for the father from a gravestone that appears to
match this individual in Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas, where other
family members are buried, even though Bennie D is reported as living in Los
Angeles at the time of death. The father's name appears as Benjamin in the
Arkansas censuses of 1900 - 1910, and as Benny or Bennie later.

-- Jean Frances McSwain Hardey, Geneanet Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins,
14 February 2017

"Nona, as she was called, was married to Ben McSwain (Benjamin) and Bennie
Dean Jr was their only child. He had a daughter (Diane) by a first wife but I
don't know her name. He later married Jennie Claire, whose maiden name I do
not know). They had two children, Eddie and Jeannie."

Listings in Public Records show Bennie D McSwain Jr at an address in Aurora,
Colorado, where we know both he and Jennie lived to their death, as well as
Bennie's mother. This would seem to confirm that his middle was also the same
as his father's.

One anomaly with this source, however, is that the years of the report of an
address and phone name under this name are 1993-1999. Bennie died in 1992. I
expect his wife kept the phone in his name, as we find for many widows.
However, the date of death I have for Jennie, as from Social Security, is in
1997. But this phone listing continued for the years 1998 and 1999. This is
a common problem in these compilations from disparate sources.

Bennie D, Bennie, and the two women Mary and Jennie all received their Social
Security numbers in Arkansas, so it appears they remained in residence in
Arkansas until at least after 1837, the first year of the Social Security
Death Index.

In 1999, at the time of Wirt Barnard McSwain's death, Bernetta was living in
Atlanta, Georgia.

"Bernetta pioneered the concept of thrift stores like Goodwill Stores and at
one time was worth more than $1 Million while running her private branded
thrift store in Atlanta. Goodwill Stores still gives Rita Kay all kinds of

Bernetta helped Goodwill Stores get their business started nationwide."

Bernice marrired Bedford Rowland. IN the 1940 census, they are living in the

In 1940 it appears that Bedford and Bernice have been married about 1 year or
less. And the report on location in 1935 says Rowland lived in the same
place, and the same for Bernice, even though we know they were married only in
1938. Thus the enumerator must have meant to indicate Ethel, but not in this
house. They are living in the second house from her father Wiley Carew
McSwain.

Bernice's headstone for the grave had not yet been updated with her death date
when it was photographed by Edith McSwain Jenkins in June 2003.

Notes for Berryman MCSWAIN

Berrymond's name is spelled various ways. We find it as Berryman in the
Hamrick Family information. In the 1910 census of Cleveland County, it was
spelled Beryman. (Page 182A). Burial Information also lists his name as
Berryman.

In 1850, the first census where he was listed, his name is Benjamin.

We also learn from this that he is crippled. I have found no further details
to explain what this means, or whether this is the result of an accident or if
he was crippled from birth. This may be one reason Berryman never married.

Pantha and Elijah. I cannot identify the other two child Lula among the
children of any of Berry's and Mary's brothers. Note that the last individual
in the family record is Lucy McSwain, a black cook for the family.

Three other McSwain families are enumerated on the same page. Next door to
Berry is his brother Elijah and wife Susannah McSwain, and next door to them
the Head of household is named Doctor A C McSwain, whom I have not identified,
and his wife Nancy C and their children. A couple of doors farther away iws
