He was shot as a deserter in the Civil War, when he overstayed a furlough to help his starving family on the farm in Cleveland County. Other information and reports by other genealogies points to the latter as the George Washington McSwain who was executed, rather than this George, husband of Hannah Hamrick. But no futher evidence was found to support this. The executed George Washington McSwain died by firing squad in Orange County, Virginia, on 9 January 1864. The date of death reported here by Hamrick for this George is close, at 5 January 1864, so could be from another incident and cause. But an 1870 census entry was found in 2015 matching George, with a wife named Malissa, reported as age 32, so born about 1838. He is reporting the matching age of 12 in the 1850 census among William and Judith's children. These census ages reporting an approximate year only 2 years later than the reported date of birth by Hamrick is in the ballpark for census age matching, and does match the 1860 census. The main conflict is now the name of the wife Malissa, in contrast to the Hannah in the Hamrick pages. Note that the Hamrick profile has no date of death for Hannah Hamrick McSwain. Also Hamrick data has the worng wife in some cases too. 1870 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 24 July, Township #3, PO Stices Shoals, page 7, Hse/Fam #57 McSwain, George 32 M W Farm Laborer Real Estate or Personal Not Rptd born NC [b abt 1838] McSwain, Malissa 32 F W Keeps House b NC [b abt 1838] McSwain, Martha 15 F W Domestic born NC [b abt 1845] McSwain, William 10 M W Farm Laborer born NC [b 1860] George and Malissa's marriage record was found in Ancestry's library. I find it interesting that Holden does not have a death date for Marcus. I estimated the date of death from another fact Holden reports. Marcus' wife was Francis Ledbetter, born 27 March 1839. But he also reports that this same Francis Ledbetter was the wife of William Kine. He reports that Francis married Marcus on 7 April 1873, and William about 1876. He reports no death date for Marcus, but he must have died, or Frances would not have married his brother. He states that he was scheduled for execution as a deserter on 9 January 1864. But for some reason, most sources report his death as 5 January 1864. ---------------------------------------------------- There was one of this generation shot at the stake in time of the Civil War. His name was George Washington McSwain. He was one of the best men in this part of the county and one of the best soldiers in the Civil War. He got a letter from home that his wife was in a bad state of affairs financially and that she wanted him to come home at once. He got a furlough for thirty days and when the time was up he failed to go back on account of the conditions at home. When they came after him he was tried by court-martial and condemned to be shot at the stake. I will give a copy of his last letter that he wrote to his dear wife and children. It is very pathetic. Charles J. Hamrick and William Jasper Jones were drawn to shoot him. Charles J. Hamrick got out by being related to the condemned man and McSwain was killed before Jones had fired [?]. They both said that George McSwain was one of the best men in their company. Whereupon comes the following letter: Camp near Orange Court House, Virginia, January 3rd, 1864. Hannah, Dear Wife and dear Children: It is with painful regret that I have to say to you in way of writing my last letter that I ever expect to write in this world to you, as my days are but few that I have to spend in this unfriendly world, as I expect to part this life next Saturday by sentence of a general court martial to be tied down to a stake on that day, the 9th of this month, and shot to death with muskets. But little thought I had of this when I volunteered in the service of my country to protect my home and family that my life would be taken by my own people simply from absenting myself from my post with the view of protecting my little helpless children and affectionate wife who are as near and dear to me as my own life. Hannah, I was in very good heart and didn't think they would shoot me until yesterday morning. My sentence was read to me that I had to be shot next Saturday. It washed against me like the raging billows against a lonely rock in a sweeping storm, and I carefully examined myself and I feel well assured that when I leave the world that I will be better off than here. But to my little children and affectionate wife may the Lord prepare and fit them to meet me in heaven, for there will be no more parting of husbands and wives and dear children, but be rest for ever. Hannah, dear wife, and dear little children, I never expect to see you any more in this life. My prayers are that you will meet me in heaven. Do the best vou can, and may God in his mercy rest and remain with you forever. Dear wife, don't grieve nor trouble after me, for I feel that I am going to a better world and be at rest. Then I won't be here to be punished any longer. My afflictions have been severe, and I feel that I will be better off when I leave this world. Tell all my friends farewell for me, and farewell, dear wife, farewell, dear children. Prepare to meet me in heaven. I will close by saying, God bless my wife and little children. Farewell. A photo of his gravestone was published in 2011 clarifying clearly that the yaer of death was 1909. This date of 1900 is reported in both the cemetery listing by W D Floyd, who has provided lists of many cemeteries in the area, and the entry on Find a Grave. I note also that unsourced reports in genealogies of the burial of George's wife Lucinda Wright McSwain also report her buried in the Beaverdam Cemetery. On Floyd's list for that cemetery, her name apepars only as L McSwain, with no dates. The memorial reports the dates unreadable, and the photo later posted confirms this. One genealogy reports, with no documentation or comment, a death date of 1 Feb 1897 for Lucinda. The Hamrick Data Pages, which report on many related families including McSwain, Green, Padgett, Moore, Hamrick and others, reports Hannah's birth as 5 October 1839, but David Holden, who reports in great detail on the McSwain and related lines, reports her birth as 5 August 1839. Hannah actually died in 1931. (See death information at the end of these Notes.) I detail some of the sources below. Note also that though this source correctly reports that Hannah and James' first child was born in 1861, it errs in reporting their marriage at an estimated date of 1865. The date of death for her husband James Moore appeared wrong, since in the 1880 census, Hannah is already reported as a widow. Later information I received from descendant Doug Green indicated that James Moore was in fact still alive. In July 2009, Doug told me that James was in Virginia, where he had fled in 1871. James and dozens of other men had been arrested in Cleveland County, North Carolina (just across the border from their home in York, County, South Carolina) for "Ku Kluxing." Out of custody awaiting trial, it is reported that James fled to Pittsylvania County, Virginia, where he actually married again and lived until he was found some years later by his son Reuben. At that stage, he returned to his family, asking forgiveness and was accepted back by Hannah. Doug reports that James died in 1891. Hannah McSwain Green b 5 Aug 1839 d 21 Feb 1931 Buried Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Blacksburg, Cherokee County, South Carolina. -- Find a Grave Memorial Registry, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=green&GScid=69416&GRid=16136379& Donald summarizes Hannah's family relationships this way: "Hannah McSwain the daughter of Rev. Louis H. McSwain. Hannah was married to James Moore Green the son of James Green and Narcissus Hamrick, whom you also list in your genealogy. Hannah and J. M. Green are buried at Antioch church in SC, near her parents' graves." -- Donald Greene, message in genealogy website guest book, 25 March 2008 All the burial information indicates, as reported above, that Hannah was buried in Blacksburg, Cherokee County, South Carolina. However, she actually died in Cleveland County, North Carolina. Her North Carolina death certificate reports the following details. North Carolina Death Certificates, 1909-1975 Mrs Hanner Green [Mrs Hannah Green] Widow, Age 92 Birth 8 May 1838 North Carolina Death 21 Feb 1931 Sandy Run, Cleveland, North Carolina [Her obituary reprots that she died in the home of her son Gilead in Double Springs, (Anderson County), South Carolina, just across the border. Her residence was Sandy Run.] Burial Antioch Cemetery (Cherokee Co SC) Spouse's Name J M Green Father's Name Louis L McSwain Mother's Name Mary Hammrick (sic) The death certificate has the typed name of Hanner Green. Written in hand is the correct Hannah Green. The informant was Gilliard (Gilead) Green, her son, whose address was given as Route 4, Shelby, NC, the same as Hannah's. But note that her obituary below reports that she died at the home of her son Gilead in Double Springs, which is across the border in Anderson County, South Carolina. But Gileadhimself was burie din the Double Springs cemetery, which his death certificate says is near Washburn Station, NC. Wanda Rabb tells me that Hannah was living with her son Gilead at the time she died. Cause of death is reported as cerebral hemorrhage, with contributing causes old age or arteriosclerosis. Time of death was 7:00 PM. The place of burial is reported as "Antiarch" Cemetery. This was the Cemetery at Antioch Baptist Church, a little farther south, just across the South Carolina state line in Cherokee County, near Blacksburg. Her parents Louis Hobson McSwain and Mary (Hamrick) McSwain were buried there, as well as her husband James Moore Green, who had died before her. The death certificate has an incorrect date of burial, 20 February 1931, the day before she is reported to have died! Hannah's obituary refers to the cemetery location as "near Grover." Grover, North Carolina, is just north of the border, and Antioch Church is south of the border toward the southeast on SC State Rd S-11-21. -------------------------- Mrs Green Dies at Age 91 Years Mother of Squire Gilead McSwain Double Springs Community Buried at Antioch Mrs Hannah McSwain Green one of the oldest women in the county, died Saturday night [21 Feb 1931] at the home of her son, Squire Gilead Green, in the Double Springs community. [But note that her death record has the address of Gilead as Rt 4 Shelby NC, same as Hannah's. Gilliard's death certificate reports that Gilead was buried in the Double Springs cemetery, which is says is "Near Washburn Station, NC" so there must be two Double Springs.] Mrs Green was born August 5, 1839, and was 91 years, six months and sixteen days old when the end came. She was the widow of the late J M Green and daughter of Rev Lewis McSwain. Her husband preceded her to the grave 30 years ago. They were married in the year 1860 and to this union five children were born, one of whom survives, Squire Gilead Green. Also surviving are two brothers, L M McSwain and Reuben McSwain, 16 (?) grandchildren, (??) great grandchildren, three great, great grandchildren. Mrs McSwain was a faithful member of the Baptist church for (??) years and a charter member of Grover Baptist church. She was a woman of great faith and fortitude, having a smile and a kind, cheerful word for all with whom she came in contact. The funeral was conducted from (at?) the residence of Squire McSwain at 11 o'clock Monday [23 Feb 1931] by Revs J W Sut(???) , D F Putnam and D G Washburn and her body was carried to Antioch Baptist Church near Grover for interment. -- Newspaper and date unknown, after 23 Feb 1931, courtesy of "Tenna57" on Ancestry.com, accessed 12 October 2015 --------------------------
