Garland

The Garland family has had a significant roll in the Emmet Methodist Church,
and they are closely related to the McSwain family. Hannah Josephine McSwain,
an older sister of C. D. McSwain, married Robert R. Garland of White County,
Arkansas, on September 10, 1865, at Falcon in Columbia County, Arkansas
[Southwest Arkansas Genealogical Society, comp., Columbia County, Arkansas,
Free Population Schedules, 1860 (Magnolia, Arkansas: Southwest Arkansas
Genealogical Society, n.d.), 70].

The growing Garland family was in Columbia County, Arkansas, in the 1870 and
1880 censuses, but they were in Emmet in the 1900 census where they had joined
members of their extended family. They were living in the dwelling next to the
C. D. McSwain home [Twelfth United States Manuscript Census, Emmet Town,
Nevada County, Arkansas]. They had come to Emmet earlier, possibly in the
1880s. [Garland´s obituary in the Nevada News of October 11, 1923, states
that he had lived in Emmet more than forty years and was a lifelong member of
the Methodist Church. The paper erroneously listed his initials as ``W.
W.´´ when they should have been ``R. R.´´]

In a deed from Lucious H. McSwain and his wife conveying a lot to the
Methodist Church in 1892, R. R. Garland was named as one of the trustees of
the Emmet Church.[Nevada County Deed Record Book W, 548 and 549.] His son
Thomas L. Garland married Junie Trotter. In 1910, T. L. Garland was living in
the home of his uncle and step-father-in-law C. D. McSwain and was later
associated with him in business in the Emmet Mercantile.Garland served as
president of the Emmet Mercantile. His brother J. M. Garland was the secretary
and treasurer [Arkansas Methodist, May 14, 1936, p. 9.].

John McSwain ``Mack´´ Garland married Elizabeth Christopher of Prescott in
November 1909.[Bruce J. Martin, comp., Nevada County Arkansas Marriage
Records, Jan. 1902-Sep 1910 (unpublished typescript, 1992), 14. Southwest
Arkansas Regional Archives, Washington, Arkansas.] The Garland brothers,
their children and other family members would remain in Emmet and be strongly
associated with the Emmet Methodist Church that played such a large role in
their lives.Their families made numerous memorials to honor their memory.

Notes for Hazel Bob MCSWAIN

In 1920, we find the first listing of Hazel Bob in the census with her family
in Prairie Township, Arkansas County, Arkansas. The census was taken at their
house on 3 February, but the actual census date was 1 January. This is why
her age is given as 1 year, 2 months. Her actual birthday was 18 October
1918. I did not learn this actual birth date until I found her obituary
online in March 2008, about 3 weeks after her death.

In 1930, Burward is the youngest of three brothers in his parents home.
Because he was born in Arkansas, we can tell his parents moved to Oklahoma
after 1923.

In 1940, Burward is reported as Henry D McSwain. We may take from this that
his first name was Henry (but it could be the middle.) The D may be from the
enumerator's understanding of Burward as Durward. But a public directory, as
well as his grave and his Social Security records have his name as Henry D
McSwain. Does this indicate that his middle name was really Durward? Two
family genealogies do indeed report his name that way.

I found only one other McSwain in the Smith Cemetery, one Leona V McSwain. It
seems reasonable to assume this is Henry's wife. There is no grave photo to
confirm if the graves share a stone or are side by side. Only closeups of the
two footstones are shown. But one genealogy that has a wife for Henry reports
her as Lois Marie Dodson.

Maybe he had two wives, Lois being the first and Leona the second. Leona is
the only wife I have found documentation of with Henry D McSwain. Oklahoma
does not make its marriage records avaialble online or through services like
Ancestry.

I found Lois Dodson in the right place, at age 4 years in Elk City, Beckham

David Holden does excellent work, and continues to develop his reconstruction
of the McSwain line. In April 2011 he updated his information on Hugh Kerr
McSwain providing some important details and filling out Hugh's family from
two marriages. David does not provide any documentation or discussion, but
his work is solid.

In 1910, Hugh is enumerated as the widowed head of the household and his
parents are living with him and his children. However, it appears what
happened is that Hugh moved into his parents' home after his wife died. Next
census, 1920, Hugh has moved to Limestone County, where he is living with his
new wife Lizzie Fulton, and the earlier children are still in Cherokee County,
in the home of their grandparents.

Notes for Hugh Kerr MCSWAIN

Hugh Kerr McSwain was the son of James McSwain, son of William David McSwain
Jr, a descendant of the originaaaaal immigrant from Isle of Skye, Scotland.
Some genealogies that have Hugh have a different parentage and line of descent
from the dominant clan of McSwains in Cleveland County.

Dr Ed Ellis, who seems to do careful work, reports that this Hugh Kerr McSwain
is the brother of Berry Hicks McSwain, son of James McSwain and Rachel
Riggins, which is in the same primary lineage of McSwains we are
reconstructing in this genealogy.

While Ed frustratingly does not include the documentation behind his
reconstructions, this seems to account for all the details. There is a lot of
confusion in many of the slap-dash genealogies out there, and many
misconnected families. This connection of Hugh as the son of Jame and Rachel
makes sense.

Rachel McSwain 11 F b North Carolina
William S McSwain 9 F b North Carolina
Emily J McSwain 7 F b North Carolina
John McSwain 4 F b North Carolina
Luther C McSwain 8mos F b North Carolina

In 1860 Hugh is in the same area, but his wife Ulissa has died. This census
does not report the relationship of others in the household to the Head of the
household. The listing after Hugh is Catherine McSwain, who is identified in
genealogies as Catherine David, his second wife. Ed Ellis says the proper
name of the wife enumerated in1850 as Ulissa is Adalissa Hopper. Other
genealogies also so name her.

In 1870, Hugh is alone in the home, which would lead us to think Catherine has
died. But her grave says she died in 1879. Perhaps she was ill at the time
of the 1870 census. The children just have been placed with famliy
relatives. None of his children are in his household. His daughter Rachel,
widowed in 1862, is enumerated as a second family in this household. There is
also a 16-year-old Hannah McSwain keeping house in Hugh's household whom I
have not identified. She is not in any census as a child of Hugh and any of
his wives.

Next door to Hugh Kerr McSwain Sr (b 1818) and his new wife Elizabeth Rippy is
Edward Ross (Neddie) McSwain and his wife Barbara, in the home of Neddie's
mother Mary Rippy McSwain. Mary's husband was Berry Hicks McSwain. In 1850
likewise Hugh was 2 doors away from Hicks and Mary.

A detailed memorial on Find a Grave fills out some details and links to
memorials of several family members. The child named Adalissa (spelled
Adlissa here) is not found in any family census. The Find-a-Grave algorithms
have calculated from the name that she is the daughter of Hugh's wife Adalissa
Hopper (also mistranscribed here from her gravestone as Adlissa). She should
have been in the 1860 census from her birth date reported here.

The birth state of Goldia's (Golda's?) father should be North Carolina, as
indicated clearly n his own record. The the father on all children was first
written as SC, then corrected to NC on all but Goldia. It appears the
enumerator first just mistakenly copied the birth state for the father from
Ida's record, then just failed to correct Goldia's record when correcting the
error.
