Orval, born in March 1899, would have been 23 in March in 1922. This works
out to the same as Iona, born in February 1904, married at 18. So it would
seem to been after March in 1922.

I found the child Isaac L listed in the censuses as a child of Benjamin F and

of this family in the Hamrick Data Pages, with Lenard McSwain matching Isaac

"My father's grandmother was Josina A McSwain Bridges the youngest child of
William D and Arrenia Mcswain. My dad has told me stories of talking to
William Henry McSwain (Uncle Henry) and aunt Frank (Frances or Frankie
McSwain) when he was a boy. He is now 87 and I have some 1st hand accounts
and other info I have found."
-- David Bridges, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 2 March 2017

The child reported as Isabella in teh census is called Isabell by the Hamrick
pages. The daughter Frances (spelled Francis in the census) is reported in
the Hamrick genealogy under her nickname of Frankie.

McSwain, William (*1826 - )
father: McSwain, Thomas (1796 - 1872)
mother: Bridges, Salena W "Frankie" (1793 - 1862)
spouse: Gipson, Malissa (*1830 - )

----------child: McSwain, Frankie (*1861 - )
----------child: McSwain, Isabell (*1861 - )
----------child: McSwain, Josina (*1861 - )

Note the unlikely approximate dates of birth, two childern born in 1860 and
four in 1861! This source does not tell us which children were born to which
wives. But from the death date of Frankie, they would all be hers. None of
these six can be the children of Frankie, however, since in 1860, she would
have been about 70 years old! But this is old even for Thomas to father
children.

I note additionally that the Hamrick information combines two children
reported in the 1860 census, called William H and Anonymous. This odd name is
a given name for several individuals in Cleveland County in the 1800s.
Hamrick combines these two children in William Anonymus.

Henry appeared to match the H of William H in the census, and Hamrick has
combined the name William with Anonymous (Anonymus). David Bridges cited
above also gives us WIlliam's full name as William Henry. The Hamrick listing
adds one child not in the 1860 census, Josina. This name is reported also by
David Bridges above, in an email to this genealogist in March 2017. He also
refers to Josina as the youngest child.

The child called Vianna by Hamrick matches the child reported in the census as
Vina C. This name is probably short for Levina, or Lavinia. Many women with
variations of this name were called Vina, Viney or other variations of this
nickname.

In 1900, Isabel and her husband Timmons McSwain were reproted in Shelby, with
an adopted child and her unmarried sister Frankie in their household.

Notes for J Cynthia MCSWAIN

George W McSwain 40 M Farmer $230 Real Estate $404 Personal born North
Carolina
Lucinda McSwain 42 F born North Carolina
Cyntha A McSwain 8 F born North Carolina

Her name Cynthia, as spelled by family sources, and on her grave, is entered
in the census as Cyntha, which I find very commonly in that era.

J Cinthia McSwain
Birth 13 Mar 1856 in North Carolina
Death 7 Mar 1915
Parents George Washington McSwain 1821 - 1909, Lucinda P Wright 1819 - 1897
-- Blanton Family, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9854432/person/-729178193

The Blanton Family genealogy seems to draw on family information, but no
sources are given. The Hamrick Data Pages also have her birth year as 1856.
This data set has no explanations or discussion. This discrepancy between the
ages in the census and the genealogy make me question the genealogy. The age
of 8 in 1860 would mean birth in about 1852. There is a great difference
between an 8-year-old and a 4-year old. I don't think the parents would have
been that much in error on such a young child. So it does not seem reasonable
that she was born in 1856.

One set of genealogies that appear to copy each other or the same source
report this same birth date but in the year 1853! This matches the census age
in 1860. These genealogies all have her name as J Cynthia A, but again with
no documentation or notes.

Cynthia's gravestone is posted on a Find a Grave memorial. Her name there is
simjply J C Greene. This confirms her birth date as 13 May 1853. She is
reported as the wife of John H Greene, and they are buried together in Trinity
Baptist Church Cemetery, Mooresboro, Cleveland County, North Carolina. The
gravestone notes that Cynthia was the first burial in this cemetery. Judging
by this, I conclude that the middle initial A in the 1860 census was just an
enumerator error.

The 1880 census reports her as age 25, which would have meant burth in about
1855.

In 1900 her actual birth date is reproted as March 1856, matching the
genealogies that reprot her birth as 13 March 1856. The ages in teh census
more closely match the 1856 date, and the gravestone date is the one-off. But
in this cse the garve nmatcehs the first census, which reported her as age 8
in 1860. Since the first census matches the gravestone, I tend to favor the
date on the grave.

----------------------
My father was Jack Osborne McSwain, he died in Pembroke Pines, Florida, his
father was William Boyd McSwain, who was married to Bonnie Mitchell, had 3
boys, she died and he remarried Mary Kiser, they had 2 girls.

Next comes Osborne Benjamin McSwain, he was married to Amanda Childers, they
were from down about Cherokee County S.C., Osborne's father was Thomas Asbury
McSwain, mother Alice (Aly Ann) Carpenter, then comes Charles McSwain who was
married to Luraner Washburn McSwain, he and she had abt 16 children together,
she died, I should have her death date somewhere in my records, probably in
the 1840s, he then married my g.g.g.grandmother Sarah L. Throckmorton.

Charles's father was David McSwain, I think his mother was Catherine
Robertson.

Notes for James MCSWAIN

Details are uncertain for this lineage in this era. Birth date is an estimate
form sources. The date of birth given in many sources in 1776, which would be
in the mother's 51st year. We usually use 50 years as the cutoff date for
child bearing, though there are some documented cases of later births.

By 1860, James has recently married a woman names Eunice, enumerated as Unicy
(Eunicy), a common nickname. James' age varies a couple of years. Some
genealogies connect this to Eunice Jane McSwain, daughter of Thomas McSwain.
But Thomas' daughter is enumerated in Thomas' household, reported as 13 years
old.

One genealogy reports a birth date for James that is highly variant from the
ages reported in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. No source is given for this
information, so it is not fully reliable and not at all verifiable. This
genealogy reports no wife for James for a cross-check on the identity. In
general the Hamricks of Ireland genealogy seems credible. Another James may
be involved. On the outside it is possible the censuses have gotten so far
off. The difference in ages between 1944 and 1939 in 1850 would mean
mistaking a 6-year-old for an 11-year-old! Not a mistake most parents would
make! So the middle name here may be an error for this James McSwain.

Howard married Mary Frances Criswell. Howard's daughter Judy Kay McSwain
Scroggins reports that her parents married 5 July 1952.

"Happy Anniversary to my mom and dad in heaven. They married on July 5, 1952"
-- Judy Kay McSwain Scroggins, Facebook anniversary tribute, 5 July 2014

Most records have his name only as Howard. On his gravestone his name is
Howard J McSwain. I never documented what the J stood for. In posting one
photo, Judy Kay identifies him as James Howard, the reverse of the name order
indicated on his grave.

"Thinking of my daddy, James Howard McSwain, on this Father's Day weekend."
-- Judy Kay McSwain Scroggins, Facebook anniversary tribute, 13 June 2014

Judy and some of her cousins have posted reminiscences about her father
Howard.

"I remember Uncle Howard telling me about being in the Army. They sent him to
Alaska. He tried to snow ski and broke both legs."
-- Floyd Rush, Facebook comment, 13 June 2014

Judy Kay commented on a photo of her father with his mother, Alice Cook
McSwain.

"This is my dad, James Howard McSwain, with my Grandmother, Allie McSwain. He
served in the military during World War II. His brother and my uncle, J.E.

In 1870, James was with his mother and siblings in Giles County, Tennessee.
His older brother Phillip (reported here as Phelp) is listed as head of
hosuehold.

James appears among the first McSwains in Arkansas County in the 1880 census.
He is apparently still unmarried, as the only two persons reported in that one
household are James, age 21, and head of household Katy, age 60. Originally
based on the 1880 census alone, I concluded that Katy is the mother of James.
This was confirmed when I found earlier records of the family in North
Carolina.

James L was 1 year old in the 1860 census of Cleveland County, North Carolina.

In Prairie Township, Arkansas, in the 1880 census, next door to Katy and her
son James L, in house #109 lives William McSwain and family, with J L and
family next door to him in house #110. Phillip McSwain and family live nearby
in house #105. This family group also includes George, living in house #52 in
this census.

James does not appear in the 1900 census for Prairie Township or otherwise in
Arkansas County.

Notes for James Magnus MCSWAIN

The 1900 census gives the name James A as a brother of Wiley, Callie and
Matthew O. James A is reported to be 15 years old, which would mean a birth
year of about 1885, matching the birth year of James Magnus), born 1 January
1885.

James (A) McSwain appears as the brother of Wiley Carew, listed here as Carew
Wiley. Carew is the head of the household after both their parents have
passed away. Their father George died in April before this June census.

1900 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 15 June, Prairie Township,

In the 1910 Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, census, he is listed only as
James McSwain. The 1920 census gives the name as James M. This is also the
name on the gravestone in Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas. I learned in
January 2008 from public documents that had become available on Ancestry.com
that his middle name was Magnus.

James McSwain married to Ruth Lowrey on 24 November 1904.

In the 1910 census James and Ruth were enumerated with their two daughters.

Stella lived only a few years. We find her grave in Mt Pleasant Cemetery in
Ethel, Prairie Township, Arkansas County. Her date of death given there is 2
May 1914.

I see that in 1910, Ruth's birthplace is reported as Arkansas, but in 1920 it
is Oklahoma. We know from other information that she was born in Indian
Territory, so the 1910 census is wrong. See Lowry family Notes.

McSwain, Thad M Son F W 3yrs 2mos AR AR OK
McSwain, Wirt B Son F W 8- 1/12 [this should read 9 months] AR AR OK

Wirt B was born in 6 April 1919. This should make his age 9 months in
February 1920. The enumerator must have had the right idea, but wrote it as
though it was 8 years (instead of 8 months in the previous year) plus the one
month of 1920.

James Magnus (Jim) was married to Ruth Lowery (spelled Lawery in some family
documents and on her tombstone). Ruth died in 1924. Jim married widow Annie
Padgett McSwain sometime between 1920 and 1930. Annie's first husband Robert
McSwain died in January 1920, right after the 1920 census (in early January
that year). In the 1930 census they are married and Annie's three younger
daughters, Elsie, Nina and Hazel Bob, are living with them. There were no
children from this marriage.

Bobby Butler research says middle initial is M. There was some uncertainty
about the middle name; family members thought it might be Marvin, like his
son. I could not get any information at that point from the direct family
members to clarify this. In January 2008, I found James' WWI Draft
Registration card online. This clarifies that his middle name was Magnus.

In 1930, we find that James' first wife has died, and he has married a widow.
His new wife is Martha Annie Padgett McSwain, widow of Robert Perry McSwain, a
son of Phillip K McSwain, one of the original McSwain pioneers. Robert is a
cousin of James Magnus, whose father is George B McSwain. James and Mattie
have merged their families into one large household.

Jim died by suicide. The date on his gravestone gives the date of death as 15
Oct 1944. It appears, however, that there was first a 1 (1941) then a 4 was
carved over it. I first dismissed this as a prominent flaw in the gravestone,
until I found the record in the Arkansas Death Index. The date of death on
that register is 15 October 1941! Correlating with this is the report of his
age at death as 56.

James Marvin went by Marvin. In the 1920 Arkansas County, Arkansas, Census, he
is even listed as Marvin J, age 6. His gravestone has J Marvin. His father
