"He worked for his dad in the aluminum products business for many years and
eventually bought it from him. He eventually went to work as a designer for
Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant, first in Texarkana, then in Jackson,
Tennessee. He did things like designing launch rocket launch platforms for
helicopter gun ships. He was writing software for a local utility company
when computers were new. Both Jimmie and his wife are both in poor health and
have many issues now, both needing assisted living. They had one son, Jimmy
who lives in Arkansas I believe, and the last I remember worked for the forest
service."
-- Kenneth Wirt McSwain, Facebook messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 16 June
2017

"Like his dad, Thad the inventor, Jimmie had a fertile and creative mind. In
his later working years he worked for Lone Star Army Ammunition plant in
Texarkana, then in Tennessee. He was a design engineer and did such things as
design missile launch pads for helicopters."
-- Kenneth Wirt McSwain, Facebook, 8 December 2018

Jim's cousin Kenneth McSwain says he and Jimmie roomed together in college.
Jim lived in Europe as a young person, when his stepfather was in the
military.

"I spent a good deal of time with them as a young teenager, and Jimmie and I
roomed together in college. His mother Juanita married a military man so
Jimmie lived in Europe with them during my childhood years. Jimmie was born
in 1940. ... I know Jimmie traveled all over Europe as a youngster. I built a
3D puzzle of Il Duomo, that masterpiece with the huge dome that an architect
finally figured out how to span. in Florence, Italy and Jimmie said he had
seen it in person. ... Jimmie was the offspring of Uncle Thad. Shirley was
the offspring of Mildred. The other 2 girls, Sue, and Terrie, were full
sisters."
-- Kenneth Wirt McSwain, Thad's cousin, Facebook messaging to Orville Boyd
Jenkins, 16 June 2017

Jim's son's entry in a college yearbook gives us both their middle names. The
son was listed in the yearbook index as James Thad McSwain Jr.

His cousin George McSwain remembered that Jimmie was in an automobile "wreck
in Stuttgart back when he was growing up where the car he was in got caught on
the railroad tracks on Main Street in Stuttgart between two trains that were
going in opposite directions on adjacent tracks and got crushed into a small
'ball' of metal that he was trapped in? As I recall, the rescuers had to cut
him out of the car and that he had several serious injuries, including a
crushed lung and several broken bones."
-- George McSwain, Facebook post on Ken McSwain's post of Jim's obituary, 8
December 2018

Ken responded to George's comment about the car accident:
"That was him. Byrdie and I used to drive from LR to Stuttgart to visit him
in the hospital. He was in the hospital for a long time recovering. He got a
little 4 cylinder new Pontiac from it, which he drove to college. We had lots
of good times together."
-- Kenneth Wirt McSwain, Facebook, 8 December 2018

A friend from past years also rememebred the accident and times with Jimmie.

"He was older than but I remember him. He really resembled his dad. I was
close to Sue. Wish we could get in contact. Years separate us and that’s
so sad. The thing I remember about Jim is the train accident."
-- Linda Hall, Facebook post on Ken McSwain's post of Jim's obituary, 8
December 2018

I received a message from Byrdie McSwain about Jim on 1 November 2018:

"I am at Jim McSwain's home in Jackson, TN. Joyce McSwain came with me. Jim
has been bed-ridden and [has been] expected to meet his maker for several
months. I got a call at home that we needed to come on over here because they
thought he about to go. Got here yesterday, and he is bad, but has rallied a
bit."
-- Byrdie McSwain, message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 1 November 2018

Jim recovered somewhat from his condition, but succumbed a month later. We
received the news through Facebook from his cousin Byrdie McSwain on 12
December 2018. His short obituary was posted by the funeral home in Jackson,
Tennessee.

Notes for Jane MCSWAIN

The Carolina Genealogy, reporting on the McSwain and related lines in
Rutherford/Cleveland County, reports that Jane McSwain was born on 24 March
1811. But other records reporting her age place her birth about 1814 or 1815.
There are other errors in this genealogy, so this birth date may also be
wrong, and may even be for a different Jane McSwain.

"Rebecca Cowart was born in 1754 in Virginia. She died after 1839. She married
David McSwain about 1780 in York Co., South Carolina; [child:] Jane McSwain
was born on 24 Mar 1811. She died on 11 Jul 1886."
-- Carolina Genealogy, http://carolinagenealogy.org/all/pafg48.htm#51827

Censuses place her birth more like 1814.

Notes for Jane MCSWAIN

Jane's gravestone is found in the Old McSwain Cemetery, south of Shelby, near
the South Carolina state line. It appears she had only one child, Thomas
McSwain's first child Sarah, born about 1816. Most genelaogies report only
one wife for Thomas, his longtime second wife Selena Francis "Frankie"
Bridges.

Jane's date of death was Sept 1817, according to her gravestone. Her memorial
on Find a Grave reports the full date as 8 September 1817, from a RootsWeb
source. It appears Sarah was her only child. The following grave
transcription comes from the photo posted on FAG by MJ.

It is not known if McSwain is Jane's maiden name also or only her married
name. There are numerous examples of McSwains marrying McSwains int his area
heavily populated by McSwains for generations. Some of Thomas's daughters
married men named McSwain.

Notes for Jane C MCSWAIN

David Murray Raper reports this person's name as Jane R. C. UNKNOWN, and Birth
abt 1879 in Arkansas. David combines the two initials reported in the 1900
and 1910 census. The C may stand for Caldonia, since she named one of her
daughters Caldonia. She is listed in the 1910 census as Janie C Criswell.
Descendant Jerry Griffitt also reports her as Janie R, and includes the 1900
census for this family.
-- Ancestry Trees,
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=7336277&pid=-1114688026

Jane's marriage record reports her as J C McSwain. I have not been able to
determine who her parents are.

William H Holden
Birth Nov 1859 in Mississippi
Death BET 1903 AND 1907 in Prairie, Arkansas County, Arkansas
Marriage 1895 Prairie, Arkansas County, Arkansas, to Jane R Mar 1878

Mattie Holden b 1904 in Arkansas
-- Holden Family, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10407308/person/-645503526

The Holden genealogy provides details, but does not report a full maiden name,
only the middle initial R, which also appears in the 1900 census. The family
Jane most likely belongs to is John Franklin McSwain and Mary G McSwain
(maiden name). Records are missing on John and Mary, and they do not appear
in the 1880 census, which should be the one reporting Jane's birth about 1878.

Jane would fit before the lat born son Russell, who also appears in the same
area, and married William Holden's daughter Ethel. Jane was about 12 years
older than Ethel, and married Ethel's father in about 1895, after he was
widowed. The location, dates and family connections match for Jane to be John
and Mary McSwain's daughter.

I discovered Jane's record of marriage to William Holden, which reports her
name as J C McSwain. Note that the marriage record gives her husband's name
as W F (as transcribed by Ancestry; they do not post the original image).
Family sources report his middle initial as H, and a record found in 2017
reports his full name as William Henry Holden. This matches his name in the
1900 census, W H Holden.

In 1900 Jane is recorded as Jane R Holden, but in the 1910 census her middle
initial is reported as C. The record of their marriage has no middle name.

We see here that before 1900 James' second wife Janie Holden had one child,
John H, born in 1896. Jerry Griffitts reports a child Caldonia born in 1901,
who was his grandmother. In the 1910 census with James' household, we find
9-year-old Caldonia, but also Mattie (whose entry looks like Wattie), born
about 1906. Jane is reported in 1900 as Jane R but in 1910 it is Jane C, as
her first marriage record above.

In June 2017 new investigation in the cemeteries of the Ethel and St Charles
area led to the discovery of clarifying relationships between several families
in the area already known to be related in various ways. Followup led to the
Robnette genealogy which provided a configuration of William H Holden's two
marriages, which helped confirm family relationships. One problem is the name
reported in different sources for William Holden's first wife.

Jerry Robnette has only a first name as Margaret. Some other sources have her
as Mary E Wigly. Documentation has been tenuous but in 2020 more records were
found on Mary and other family member and the profile is firmed up better. It
seems definite that her name was Mary, though one or two genealogies call her
Margaret.

Robnette provides some more details about the relationships and configuration
of William Henry Holden. These relationships enabled us to make several
connections between the Holden, McSwain, Criswell and Jones families. William
and Janie's daughter Ciscela (Cicely/Sissily) married Robert Foote Jones. A
Jane E Holden Jones is also identified as a half-sister of Ciscela in a 1903
photo, instead of her step-mother. Several censuses were reviewed, some added
and other records covereed to clarify the overall family structure.

It appears that Jane died before the 1920 census, but it is not clear just
when. I have found no record of her death. Jerry Griffitts reports (with no
source documentation) that she died in 1930, but it is clear that James
Criswell's wife in 1920 is 53-year-old but Mattie, while Jane would be about
42. The marriage records of Arkansas County report that James and Martha
(Mattie) Connelly married in 1913. So we can say that Janie Holden died
before that time.

The Holden genealogy reports that Jane died in 1930, but I have been unable to
find any documentation related to her death. James married for the third time
before the 1920 census, where his wife is Martha, last name unknown. It
appears that Jane died, but if the couple was divorced, I have found no record
of that nor any information on Jane from their to her reported death in 1930.

Notes for John MCSWAIN

There are some differences in the birth dates reported for John McSwain. All
sources are agreed that he was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina. I
am reporting the exact address that is reported on the Burial records for
Antioch Baptist Cemetery, Cherokee County, South Carolina. The Hamrick Data
Pages report December 1849, while the cemetery information is 29 October 1849.
The source of the Hamrick date is not known. Others estimate from age in
censuses.

The 1850 census says John was 10 months old. The census was taken 4
September, for a census date of 1 September. This would match the cemtery
gravestone date . If he was born on 29 October 1849, then he would have been
10 months old on 29 August 1850.

Notes for John MCSWAIN

John's grave information gives an age of 63 years, but no actual date. The
transcription by W D Floyd reads:
"McSwain, John 63 years September 27, 1867 McSwain Cemetery, Cleveland Co,
NC"
-- http://www.rfci.net/wdfloyd/cemm5.html

A birth year figured from the death date of 27 September 1867, yields a birth
year of 1804. But this cannot be, since the well-substantiated birth date of
his son Louis Hobson is 3 October 1814. The age in the grave marker cannot be
right, since the 1860 census gives his age as 66! Based on this census age,
if he died in 1867, he should have been 73, not 63. This may be an entry
error.

A source in One World Tree gives a date of 28 August 1794. This is a
reasonable date, which I am following. This matches the birth year yielded by
the August 1860 census age of 66. This is also close to the September 1850
census when he is age 55, yielding a birth year of 1795.

Similar problems occur with the reported birth dates and ages for Susannah.
The 1850-60 censuses provide a reasonable date of birth, also matching some
genealogy sources.

Susannah McSwain 64 F [b 1786]
Nancy Morris 82 F [b 1768]

This Nancy Morris is Susannah's mother. John Roberts is either a boarder or a
worker on John's farm. In 1850 John and Susannah are living 5 houses from
their son Louis/Lewis in House #576.

Hse/Fam #514
John McSwain 66 M Farmer $1000 Real Estate $7900 Personal Estate [b 1794]
Susannah McSwain 75 F [b 1785]

Note that even though the 1850 census is a month later than the 1860 census,
they are comparatively one year younger. They should be either the same or a
year older if their birthdays were in August. This is one of the cultural
indications that people did not focus as precisely on ages as our more recent
information culture does.

In 1860 John and Susannah are living three doors down from their son Lewis
Hobson McSwain and his family in House #511.

Notes for John Allison MCSWAIN

The couple were not married. The mother died in childbirth. John is reported
to have moved to Texas and married there.

In November 2011, I received an email from Judy McSwain Miller discussing her
McSwain ancestors. She reported that her great grandfather George had three
brothers, according to entries in his Bible. They were named John, Russell
and Charlie. George seemed to match the George Franklin McSwain in my
genealogy, who was the son of John Franklin McSwain. Other genealogies also
report John Franklin and his wife Mary G (Unknown maiden name) as the parents
of her grandfather George.

The brother John matches the John McSwain reported by a cousin line of
McSwains from Arkansas County, Arkansas, who was the father of Cyrus Lester
McSwain. Cyrus' mother died at or soon after his birth in 1899, The family
remembers that the parents were cousins and were not married.

In January 2007, Cyrus Lester' grandson Kevin told me that his family did not
know any details about John. They knew John was "some kind of cousin" of
Lester's mother. From facts in records I had found, it was not clear who John
McSwain was.

John moved to Texas, and they had no information. I had been unable to
identify which group of Texas McSwains might be the family of John. I had not
been to match any John McSwain definitely to John the father of Cyrus. These
facts fit for John, the son of John Franklin.

Cyrus Lester McSwain Jr reports that his grandmother, John's wife, was named
Tisey, the daughter of Phillip McSwain. The family memory says that the
mother of Lester died in childbirth. Further, she was buried in an unmarked
grave. I have not yet been able to find any record or firm reference to
anyone of the name Tissie (Tisey) or a related name.

Tisey (Tissie) may have been another daughter born after the 1880 census, and
her death must have been before the 1900 census, since her name is not
documented in the censuses. In 1880, only two daughters of Phillip are
reported, Maggie, age 4, and Ada Loora, age 2. We know of Ada Loora's later
marriage to William Morgan Butler.

In initial family research done by Bobby Butler on the McSwains of Ethel,
Bobby reports some names not found in the censuses. From the records of
Belleview Baptist Church, Bobby found several individuals with the surname of
McSwain. He mentions these with a year by each. One of these is Triss, in
the year 1884.

Triss could be Tissie, daughter of Phillip and Martha. Bobby does not
indicate the significance of the year he shows by each name: born this year,
baptized in this year, joined this year, mentioned in a business meeting,
prayer request or news?

In the 1900 census, John was reported in Delta County, Arkansas, in the
northeast corner west of Texarkana. He is boarding with a family there.

The Texas Marriage Index reports a John A McSwain marrying Bessie Weaver on 29
Jun 1902 in Delta County. This is also the date a genealogy reports for the
marriage of John Allison McSwain to Vessie Estelle Weaver. John registered
for the WWI draft under his full name of John Allison McSwain and gives the
name Vessie McSwain for his contact. See this genealogy below, along with the
transcription of his WWI draft registration.

Texas, Select County Marriage Index, 1837-1977
J A McSwain
Gender Male
Marriage 29 Jun 1902 Delta, Texas
Spouse Bessie Weaver
(Note that family sources and John himself write her name as Vessie, not
Bessie.)

The place of marriage is reported as Delta County. The genealogy below
reports they were married in Crossroads, Texas. There is an official town and
post office named Cross Roads in Denton County, north of Dallas. But in Delta
County, there is also an informal community calls Crossroads, which would
reconcile the official record and the genealogy. Interestingly, however, the
Texas Historical Commission summary reports it is "a small black community."

"CROSSROADS, TEXAS (Delta County). Crossroads, known at various times as
Union, Clem, and Hog Wallow, is a small black community at the intersection of
Farm roads 2949 and 128, four miles northwest of Enloe in northwestern Delta
County. It is bordered to the southwest by the East Fork of Big Creek. The
Crossroads school opened as Hog Wallow School in 1895. In 1903 Emmett C.
Norwood opened a post office and called the settlement Clem, in honor of a
prominent county family. The postal service ended after four years, and
residents soon began to call the community Crossroads for its location.
Crossroads appeared on maps as an unidentified community in 1936."

One genealogy identifies John as John Allison McSwain. Little documentations
provided for the details provided. But they cite the WWI draft registration,
which was filled out in Paris, Arkansas, in Logan County near Ft Smith. This
document reports his birth date as 22 Oct 1873. This is not too troubling,
since the 1900 census is usually wrong on the year of birth.

John Allison McSwain
Birth 22 Oct 1873 in Arkansas
Death 9 Sep 1938 in Elk City, Beckham,
Parents:
JOHN FRANKLIN McSWAIN b 1840

-- Martin & Ritch, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/7106982/person/6055678837

The genealogy matches the Texas marriage record date reports that John was
married in Texas in 1902, matching the family story and the move of his family
there. No documentation is provided, but the full name of the wife is
reported, which matches the first name reported in the WWI draft registration.
They report he died in Oklahoma. The year 1938 conflicts with the family
memories reported by Kevin McSwain that John died in the mid 60s. So this
John may not be the correct one as the father of Cyrus McSwain in Arkansas
County, Arkansas in 1899.

John and Vessie's first two children were born in Texas. In the 1910 census
they are reported as resident in Logan County, Arkansas, east of Ft Smith.
This census is very helpful in clarifying Vessie's odd first name, which
census enumerators had trouble with. Vessie is reported as Dessie in 1920 and
Bessie in 1930. In 1910 she is reported as Vesta E. This makes perfect sense
of the odd name reported in other records, including her Texas marriage
record.

Vesta is a name we know. I have an aunt named Vesta. As in many records of
the late 1800s and the first half of the 1900s, especially in rural counties
of the US, nicknames were the common form of name in censuses. This trend
increases as you move west from the early colonies to the frontier. From
census reports of the birth sates of the children, we can tell that after
Gussie was born, they moved to Arkansas about 1905. Note that John's parents
are now both reported as born in Tennessee. Two of Vesta's sisters are living
with them.

They were enumerated in the same location in the 1920 census. Their first
child, Gussie, is reported in at least one genealogy as a boy named William
August. And in 1910, he was reported as William A. But Gussie is clearly
reported as a girl in the 1920 census. Since Gussie is normally a girl's
name, we can understand how the enumerator could misunderstand as he wrote
down the list of children.

Henry here matches Burward in 1930. With the middle initial here as D, this
makes me wonder if the name in 1930 should have been Durward. But he is
reported as Burward by genealogies, following the 1920 census. Most
genealogies have no reference to the 1940 census and little other
