Notes for John David MCSWAIN

John David McSwain is reported as David McSwain in some sources and
genealogies. There is some discrepancy between sources on whether David and
his brother William David were born in Orange County, North Carolina or in
Virginia. Some sources express uncertainty between these two locations for
the sister Priscilla, which some sources do not list in the genealogy. Due to
the line of migration from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, there is reason to
believe that the older son David was born in Virginia.

It appears that some compilers have confused two lines of McSwains, which have
similar names. For instance, Charles who married Lurany (Lewraner) Washburn,
is shown by one or two as the son of a David McSwain who was born in 1734,
rather than this David, whom I have tentatively identified as John David, born
in 1750 and his wife Catherine Robinson. Because of the variation of ages and
dates in many public sources and even greater variation in family sources and
undocumented genealogies filling the gaps, I may have some plugged in here
incorrectly.

Paul Sarrett has earlier dates than some sources on certain siblings in this
generation. Paul reports David as the first child, born in 1750, while others
lack a date. The Lawson genealogy also follows the date of 1750 for David.
Paul has a date of birth for Priscilla in 1756, while others have 1768. Some
sources have dates on only some. Most have no date on the marriage, so I have
used Paul's early birth date for David and his estimated marriage date based
on that, "Before 1750."

Here is a list of David's children with his two wives from one genealogy.
Some genealogies record two daughters named Nancy, one born in 1782 and one
1817, and some additional children of Rebecca.

Catherine Robertson was born about 1754 in Virginia. She married David
McSwain.
(Other marriages: Bradford, Darnell)
They had the following children:

M i Charles McSwain was born on 13 Aug 1786. He died on 19 Dec 1848.
F ii Margaret McSwain was born in 1792. She died in 1872.
F iii Elizabeth McSwain was born about 1784.

Rebecca Cowart was born in 1754 in Virginia. She died after 1839. She married
David McSwain about 1780 in York Co., South Carolina
They had the following children:

M i George McSwain I was born about 1797. He died in 1834.
M ii Thomas McSwain was born on 16 Mar 1821. He died on 21 Sep 1899.
M iii James S. McSwain was born in 1802. He died in 1892.
F iv Jane McSwain was born on 24 Mar 1811. She died on 11 Jul 1886.
F v Nancy J. McSwain was born in 1817. She died in 1860.
-- Carolina Genealogy, http://carolinagenealogy.org/all/pafg48.htm#51827

In the 1800 census there are three McSwain households (spelled McSwaine) next
to each other in York District of South Carolina (just across the border from
Rutherford, North Carolina). The names and ages present discrepancies from
the received dates of birth, but these appear to be three sons of William
David McSwain who was born in about 1725 and died in about 1780. They are
John, David and Jonathan.

Jonathan at first clearly appears to be the son born in about 1770, as this is
the only Jonathan I am aware of at that time. But the age range for Jonathan
is 16-15, and he should be about 30 at this time. I have found that there was
a Jonathan McSwain form the Baltimore McSwains and this may be an instance of
the two families being confused (by me this time). The Baltimore Jonathan was
born 1758. But some of these individuals and generations may be correct,
filling the gap of the long years of birth of children shown in most sources
as the children of William David McSwain, so on the David born in the ocean
voyage from Skye. More analysis of these lines needs to be done to satisfy my
goals.

The one named David matches the age range expected for William David, but he
usually went by William in documents we have. But this John David normally
went by David and is known as David in some sources. But he is the only one
who might be called John also. Thus John appears to match John David, born in
about 1750. None of these McSwain neighbors is reported as that old. In the
1800 census, John's age is reported in the range of 25-44, the oldest age
group of any of these three.

McSwane, George F 9mos b Oct 1869 M W Tennessee

I note that the son George F was born in Tennessee, but is only 9 months old.
Thus they moved to Arkansas after October 1869. This means they traveled in
the Winter or more likely Spring to be there by July. John's cousin Francis,
a son of Catherine Weathers McSwain, probably traveled from Tennessee to
Arkansas with John and Mary. Catherine and the rest of her children are
enumerated in Giles County, Tennessee, in this 1870 census.

John and Mary got married sometime after the 1860 census, when he was a
17-year-old, still living with his folks in Cleveland County, North Carolina.
I have not yet found information on when they moved to Tennessee or how long
they were there before moving on to Arkansas.

Next door to John is his cousin Virgil Weathers. On the other side of John is
another cousin Francis McSwain, a single farmer. The names of both McSwain
families are spelled McSwane, as some families spell their name today.
Another spelling was McSweyn.

Another McSwain researcher, David Holden in Germany, comments on this in one
of our email exchanges.

"John F. McSwain. I don't have any proof, but my guess is he is John
Franklin, the son of Richard E. McSwain and Mary Weathers. In 1870 Francis
McSwain is living on one side of John F. Look who is living on the other
side. Is that just coincidence? Although Virgil Weathers was from South
Carolina, his father R.B. Weathers was born about 1810 in NC and could easily
have been Mary Weathers' brother. That would make Virgil and John F. 1st
cousins once removed."
-- David Holden, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 15 October 2007

In the 1870 census, John's wife Mary G matches a cousin Mary (Polly) G
McSwain, daughter of George McSwain and Catherine Weathers. No other record
reports a spouse for them. Their personal details and the dates and places of
both their families matches these two who otherwise have no spouses. First
and second cousin marriages are common in the McSwain lineage and related
families in North Carolina (Rutherford and Cleveland Counties in North
Carolina and York and Cherokee Counties in South Carolina).

At this point, I did find such a connection in an online McSwain genealogy, by
Howard Randy Martin, which had made the same connection since the last time I
had seen that genealogy. Martin's genealogy also had an 1880 census for a John
and Mary McSwain in Calhoun County, Mississippi. But this 1880 census family
inMississippi is not the same correct family. John's age differs, his
birthplace is South Carolina instead of North Carolina and his Mary was born
in Georgia instead of North Carolina. In addition, the children have
different names.

I have found no record for our John and Mary in the 1880 census. I suspect
that John died early 1880 or even 1879. The last child, Russell Arberry, was
born in 1879, according to the 1900 census, though the date on his gravestone
is 1881. The latter seems to be an error.

There is a John T, who could be the son named John, reported by Judy McSwain
Miller. But there is no George, who was less than 2 years old in 1870 in
Arkansas County, and several older children who should have been in the 1870
census. This makes John older than would seem right. There is no Charles.
Francis and Elijah don't figure in this family in any other references to our
John and Mary. And we have nothing else to tie them to Mississippi.

George Franklin McSwain's death certificate reports different parents' names
than other sources, giving the names of George and Ida McSwain. Mary (Polly)
apparently was known by the nickname Ida as well as Polly. Her maiden name
was also McSwain. Her parents were George McSwain and Catherine Weathers. I
have found that very much information on many death certificates is very ad
hoc, incomplete names or downright incorrect. It depends on the informant and
how specifically aware they were of the details.

The informant was George's son Russell Murphy McSwain, so you would think he
had accurate information. Russell reports that George's parents were George
McSwain and Ida McSwain. But others family sources indicate that George
Franklin's parents were John Franklin McSwain and Mary (Polly) G "Ida"
McSwain. Some genealogies report that Mary (Polly) G McSwain also had the
nickname of Ida. So this may be correct for his mother's name on his death
certificate. George is such a common name in the whole McSwain lineage, his
son may have just got the name of his grandfather wrong.

Many details and several family genealogies support John F McSwain as George's
father. I think because George is so common in this McSwain lineage, the
informant just got the name George substituted for John. And it just as
likely that the coroner just wrote it down wrong, confusing the deceased's
name George with his father's name John. There is no George and alternative
Ida that could have been parents of a George McSwain that might match.

All the siblings, places and family details match the son of John Franklin
McSwain and Mary G "Ida" McSwain. This transcription of his death certificate
was included on George's memorial on Find a Grave: -- Find A Grave

Notes for John William MCSWAIN

John's son commented on a genealogy discussion forum, providing a few details
about his father and grandfather:

"My father, John William McSwain, was born in Stuggart, AR, in 1919; his
father was George (Burton?) McSwain, also called "Slim." He had some brothers
and sisters near DeWitt, AR. He was an oil/water well driller, and died in
Columbus, Ohio, in 1947-48."

The 1920 census above indicates that in January 1920 John was already almost 2
years old. The age given in the census indicates he was born in April or May
1818.

There is a burial records that clopsely matches John. The birth date of 9
April 1918 is a match for the less specific April 1918 based on his age in the
1920 census. The burial is in Memphis, where he and his parents had lived.
But the date of death on the grave does not match the date reported by his son
James. James (see quote above) saod his father died died in 1947-48.

Notes for Jonathan MCSWAIN

In the 1800 census, Jonathan is living in a cluster of 3 McSwain households.
The family name of these heads of household is spelled McSwaine. Jonathan's
age range is 16-25, but his reported birth in family sources is about 1770.
There is one adult female, age range 25-44, and one male under 10.

This is the only Jonathan McSwain I am aware of in this area at that era, so
despite the age discrepancy, this must be Jonathan, son of William David who
was born about 1725.

1800 Federal Census, York District, South Carolina, page 962 (scan 626)
Jonathan McSwaine 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-25
1 female 26-44
1 member of household under 16, 1 over 25

Next door to him is a John McSwaine, age 25-44. I would expect this to be
Jonathan's brother John David, called David in some sources. But this John
David, or David, was born in about 1750, so he should be 50 and in the next
category.

Next to this John is a David, in the same age range, which would match the
birth date of 1762 reported by family sources for Jonathan's brother William
David, who would be about 38 in 1800. Even with these discrepancies, it seems
likely this is the three brothers, sons of William David McSwain, born about
1700, who died about 1780.

1800 Federal Census, York District, South Carolina, page 962 (scan 626)
David McSwaine 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-44
2 females under 10, 1 female 26-44

The Hamrick pages had a list of all the children.

McSwain, William (*1826 - )
father: McSwain, Thomas (1796 - 1872)
mother: Bridges, Salena W "Frankie" (1793 - 1862)

----------child: McSwain, Frankie (*1861 - )
----------child: McSwain, Isabell (*1861 - )
----------child: McSwain, Josina (*1861 - )

The child called Vianna by Hamrick matches the child reported in the census as
Vina C. This name is probably short for Levina, or Lavinia. Many women with
variations of this name were called Vina, Viney or other variations of this
nickname.

Another decendant reported the last child as Josina, matching the Hamrick
list.

"My father's grandmother was Josina A McSwain Bridges the youngest child of
William D and Arrenia Mcswain. My dad has told me stories of talking to
William Henry McSwain (Uncle Henry) and aunt Frank (Frances or Frankie
McSwain) when he was a boy. He is now 87 and I have some 1st hand accounts
