The Hamrick record of this family in the Hamrick Data Pages, page 75, records
three children, Asa, Lucinda and Samuel O. We are told that Lucinda married
Zechariah R McKinney. It appears from the marriage information that this
Lucinda and Zechariah in the census are married. It seems likely that this
should have been Zechariah and Lucinda McKinney, but it is not certain.

In the 1860 census, we find them in a similar location, under the proper name
of McKinney, with two children. They are still in Cleveland County, North
Carolina, but I do not see any of Lucinda's siblings or her mother nearby.

At the age of 9 in August 1860, this would seem to indicate that Mildana
(Meldonia) was born after August 1850. This matches with the August date for
the 1850 census and the birth year of 1850 given by the Hamrick Data Pages.
Lucinda's age here, though, is 12 years older than 10 years ago. There is an
error somewhere. Because of the likely birth of Meldonia in 1850, the older
age reported in 1860 seems more likely. This would make Lucinda's age at
their marriage in about 1849-50 more like 16 than 14.

Lucy's age varies wildly in the censuses. She is reported to be 29 in 1850,
which would mean birth year was abotu 1821. She is 11 years younger than her
husband David. Then in 1860, she is 54, making her born in 1806, and 5 years
older than her husband. Ages varyof some of the chidlren vary too.

I cannot completely match up the children, which might lead us to conclude
that this is a different David and Lucy. David matches Daniel, and David L
seems to be the right name. The Sarah here could be either Lucy's mother
Sarah Bostic or David's mother (known in most sources as Susanna Hamrick, but
reported in Hamricks of Ireland as Sarah Susanna Hamrick). I think it is
Lucy's mother, since the Hamrick's of Ireland is the only source I ahve seen
that adds the name Sarah to Susannah Hamrick McSwain.

In the 1910 census we find Jane Padgett boarding with Maggie and her family.
In 1900 she had been boarding in the household of Maggie's father Phillip,
along with her mother Lavinia Padgett. In 1880, the Padgetts had been
next-door neighbours of Phillip. In 1910 Maggie and her family are next door
to her parents, Phillip and Martha.

The 1920 census returns to the standard spelling of Rowland.

In 1920, her name is spelled Maggy, rather than Maggie, as we have it in
previous censuses. Maggy is a widow, head of her household as a farmer. We
can estimate the year of death of her husband Bedford by the ages of their two
youngest children. Walton is 8 and Edward is 5. Edward would have been born
in roughly 1915, so Bedford could have died during that pregnancy or at some
time between 1905 and February 1920, when the census was held.

A Bedford Rowland was born in 1918, according to a marriage record in Arkansas
County. This appears to be a son of Maggie and her first husband Bedford
Forrest Rowland, who died before the 1920 census. But this child does not
appear in Maggie's household in 1920 or 1930. But I don't know who his
parents would be otherwise. The young Bedford married Bernice McSwian in 1938
in Arkansas County. The residence for both is reported as Ethel.

By 1930, Maggie has remarried, to William Porter. They have two children,
ages 17 and 16. This would meant that these are William's children by a
previous wife. Also living in the household is Maggie's son Edward Rowland.

Census ages indicate that Maggie was born in 1875-77. The Social Security
Death Index reports that at the time of her death her age was 65, with an
estimated birth year of 1878. The Index does not report an exact date of
birth. The 1900 census reports the month and year of birth. For Maggie this
was Aug 1876. This is consistent with the ages reported in the censuses, and
is the most exact date, so I have reported August 1866 as her birth date.

I had never found out what Maggie's middle initial E stood for until July
2013, when her granddaughter contacted me through Facebook.

Shirley reported on Maggie's birth and death dates. Her gravestone has the
death date as only the year 1952, but the correct full date from records is 17
November 1951.

"I do not know why Maggie McSwain Rowland Porter's headstone says she died in

Maggie Ella McSwain Porter
Birth Aug 30, 1876 Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas
Death Nov 17, 1951 Arkansas County, Arkansas

Maggie was the daughter of Phillip K McSwain and Martha Elizabeth Padgett, who
had moved with their families, soon after their marriage, from North Carolina
to Ethel, on the White River, in Arkansas County. Maggie married Bedford
Forrest Rowland, who had come from Kentucky. They had several children.

Bedford died in about 1917. In 1928, Maggie married widower William James
Porter, who is buried near her in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery in Ethel.

Maggie's grave has only the year of birth and death, but each is one year
later than actual. Maggie's granddaughter reported her birth and death dates:

for Marcus and his siblings.

Holden does not have a death date for Marcus, but I estimated the date of
death from another fact Holden reports. Marcus' wife was Francis Ledbetter,
born 27 March 1839. Holden also reports that this same Francis Ledbetter was
the wife of William Kine. Francis married Marcus on 7 April 1873, and William
about 1876. No death date is reported for Marcus, but he must have died, or
she would not have married his brother. Thus, using round figure years, I
estimated Marcus died in about 1875.
