Sarrett and Hamrick have different dates for Martha, as well as a couple of other children of Lous Hobson and Mary. Hamrick Family has an exact date of birth for Nancy in October 1841, while Paul Sarrett has a year 1844. Paul has Martha born in 1841, while Hamrick data has birth year abt 1855. Though the dates in the censuses cause the estimated date of birth to vary somewhat, in both 1850 and 1860, Martha appears between Judy and Hannah, 1850 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 4 September, p 315 (scan 158), Hse/Fam #596 McSwain Lewis 35 M Baptist Preacher b NC (b abt 1815) McSwain Mary 38 F b NC (b abt 1812) McSwain Judy N 16 F NC (b abt 1834) McSwain Martha 13 F b NC (b abt 1837) McSwain Hannah 10 F b NC (b abt 1840) Notice that here Mary (Hamrick) is said to have been born in North Carolina, but in the 1870 census, when they are living a little across the border in York District, South Carolina, she is reported as born in South Carolina! M.E. KENDALL DIES AT HOME HERE Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Kendall, age 65, life-long resident of this county, died at her home here Saturday evening after an illness of several months. During the large part of six months she has been confined to her bed. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church here Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. A.W. Hamilton, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Harold D. Sadler of Little Rock and the Rev. H.W. Jean, pastor of the local Baptist Church. Interment was in the family lot at Moore's Church cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Ed Kendall of Rison and David H. Kendall of Granite City, Ill; three daughters, Mrs. O.B. Steger and Mrs. C.E. Harrison of Rison and Mrs. C.O. Moore of Pine Bluff; and one sister, Mrs. R.M. Hamilton of Rison. Her children and sister were at her bedside when she died. Mrs. Kendall, who before her marriage to Chas E. Kendall in January 1886, was Miss Martha Elizabeth McSwain. She was born in this county Sept. 8, 1863. When a young girl, she united with the Methodist church and continued a faithful and devout member until her death. In his discourse, Rev. Sadler, who until recently was her pastor, said that he had never known a Christian more devoted to her church and to the principles for which it stands than Mrs. Kendall. He stated that no member of the church was more loyal to its pastor or more willing to perform any task for the church than she. For the past 16 years she had made her home in Rison and perhaps no other citizen of the city was more universally loved and respected. Mr. Kendall died 12 years ago. Parent M. M. Some genealogies list this daughter as Mary, and others as Polly. In the 1850 census, she is listed as Polly. In some others she is listed as Mary. It would seem to indicate that her name was Mary Polly or Polly Mary. In the 1850 census, when she is still living at home with her parents, her age is given as 20. But the census was taken in August, and her birthday was 22 May 1829. So her age should have been 21. 1850 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 17 August, Hse/Fam #295 Polly McSwain 20 F born North Carolina The Hamrick Data Pages inform us about her spouse and chidlren. One source had two separate children, Mary and Margaret. The estimated date of birth of Margaret was 1792. But the exact date of birth in that source for the next child, William, was 22 Sep 1792. This means no other child could have been born to that family in 1792. That date is also reported for William by other sources. They could have been twins. For a long time I found no other sources with the name Mary Margaret, or a separate Margaret. It appeared best to follow this World Family Tree source in naming this child Mary Margaret. In July 2007 I found one site that gave Margaret as the nickname of this Mary, with the same birth date, but different county information (Orange instead of Rutherford), but a different approximate death date with the same location: "McSwain, Mary "Margaret" b: 16 Mar 1784 in Orange County, North Carolina d Abt Rutherford (nka Cleveland) County, North Carolina" -- http://www.rfci.net/wdfloyd/cemm5.html The Moore-McSwain has no birth record for a Maragret McSwain in this family. Mary McSwain's birth date is reported there as 16 March 1782. "Mary McSwain was born march 16th Day of 1782 / Hannah McSwain was born may 11 Day of 1785 / Sarah McSwain was born the 17th Day of september 1786 / James McSwain was Born September 17 Day 1787 / Rebeccah McSwain was Born may the 20 Day of 1789" / Elizabeth McSwain was Born may the 21 Day 1791" -- Moore Family Bible, courtesy of Virginia Owens Long, accessed 1 Feb 2016 on the Owens-Burns genealogy, Ancestry.com This may need to be reconsidered, since I have discovered that the Hamrick family data has a set of children with birth dates beginning after the date of death of Mary McSwain, wife of Elijah Hamrick. According to the list of children, Mary had 10 children before she died in 1823. They list Margaret, her sister as the second wife of Elijah, who had 7 more children after that. 17 children would be a lot of children for one woman to have. And the death year of 1823 matches the death date I have from other sources for Mary Margaret: 23 Feb 1823. The 1860 census report for Thomas Moore and his wife Margaret reports Margaret as age 53. This would make her birth year about 1796 or 1797, 5 years after the date suggested by the source mentioned above. 1860 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 13 July, Eastern Division, PO Guntersville, page 89, Hse/Fam #598 Thomas Moore 65 M Farmer $320 Personal Estate b North Carolina Margaret Moore 63 F b North Carolina G M 22 M b North Carolina Elizabeth Jolly 7 F b North Carolina

This child is reported as Mary E in the 1880 census. This seems to match the child named in the Hamrick Data Pages as Ellen McSwain. Her name seems to be Mary Ellen. The Hamrick data does not know her birth year, indicating the year *1862 (about 1862) for several of the children. Mary McSwain is also referred to as Polly McSwain. We find Polly as a very common nickname for women named Mary in the 1800s. From the general patterns of use of the name Polly, it appears that this person's proper name was Mary G McSwain who is also referred to by the nickname Polly. She is reported a Polly G in 1850 and Mary G in 1860. It is uncertain what the G stood for. Some genealogies also report that she was also known by the nickname Ida. Some genealogies report she used a nickname of Ida. One or two have reported Ida McSwain's husband was George. I think this is an error, or they have confused two different women named Ida whose married name was McSwain. Another likely reason is a misidentification on George's death certificate, which reports his father's name as George McSwain, with no further identification. The name Ida for his mother matches a reported nickname of Mary (Polly) G "Ida" McSwain. 1850 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 4 September, p 31, Hse/Fam #587 George McSwain 57 [b abt 1793, note differences in ages from census to census] Farmer $600 Real Estate b NC Catharine McSwain 34 b NC Polly G McSwain 7 b NC Sally H McSwain 5 b NC Phillip K McSwain 3 b NC Francis M McSwain 1 b NC Andrew Ruske 21 [Not known who this is] Farmer b NC Mary Weathers 75 [b abt 1775] b NC 1860 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 6 August, p 54, Hse/Fam #385 George McSwain 61 M Farmer $No Real Estate $100 Personal b NC [b abt 1799, note differences in ages from 1850, only 4 years] Catherine McSwain 40 F b NC Mary G McSwain 17 F b NC [Note change of name from Polly G to Mary G] [b abt 1843] 1870 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 4 July, Prairie Township, PO St Charles, page 15, Hse/Fam #118 McSwane, John F 30 M W Farm Laborer $No Real Estate $140 Personal Estate NC [b abt 1840] McSwane, Mary 26 F W Keeping House NC [b abt 1844] McSwane, George F 9mos b Oct 1869 M W Tennessee It appears that Mary and John married about 1868. I have not found their marriage record. We can tell from the birth state of George that they were married in Tennessee, and may surmise that it was in Giles County, where Mary's mother and siblings were still living at the time of the 1870 census. Mary's mother Mary had apparently moved her family there from Cleveland County, North Carolina, in about 1865. "I read somewhere that she got remarried to, I think, a Padgett..in the late 1880s or early 1890s." -- Judy McSwain Miller, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 10 August 2014 I found a marriage record that matched, in Arkansas County. The person she is reported to have married here was the husband of Judith N McSwain, a daughter of Louis Hobbs McSwain and Mary Hamrick. They were married in 1862 in North Carolina, and moved to Arkansas via Tennessee with other McSwains and Padgett relatives. Mary was Phillip K McSwain's sister, the daughter of George McSwain (who died about 1865) and Catherine (Kate) Weathers. Even more strange, I found another marriage record for E Padgett and Judie Padgett in 1886. It may be that Edwin and Judith divorced before 1888, then Edwin married Mary McSwain (whose brother P K was married to Edwin's sister Lavinia Padgett), Mary may have died shortly afterwards (I have not found her death record). Then it appears that Edwin and Judith remarried.
