Cleveland was created in 1841 out of old Rutherford which was broken into smaller counties, one of which was the new Rutherford. Since the date was after 1841, it many be that Hamrick intended to indicate that this child was born farther north than the other children.

No middle name is known for Oliver. No record of marriage. He was 18 when he joined the North Carolina Confederate Forces. Oliver died as a POW in a Union prison camp in Maryland. Here is the record of service for Oliver McSwain. American Civil War Soldiers Oliver McSwain Residence Cleveland County, North Carolina Occupation Farmer Enlistment 12 May 1862 Cleveland County, North Carolina Served the Confederacy Enlisted as a Private on 12 May 1862 at the age of 18; 30 May 1862 mustered into Company D, 55th Infantry Regiment North Carolina Died POW Company D, 55th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 13 Jun 1864 at Point Lookout, MD "During the Civil War, Point Lookout was one of the largest prisons of CSA POWs. Many men died there from exposure, malaria, scurvy and TB. Originally, the soldiers were buried in two cemeteries near the prison camp. However, because the cemetery land started to erode into the Chesapeake, in 1870 the state of Maryland removed the remains. In 1910 they were moved again and re-interred in a burial trench one mile inland, near where a federal monument was constructed that year. The 80-foot granite obelisk marks the site, just outside Point Lookout State Park, but the actual boundaries of the pit are not marked." -- "Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery," Find a Grave, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=81385 Oliver is the only Confederate soldier surnamed McSwain. His full name was probably Oliver. There are several Olivers over the generations in the McSwain line in both North Carolina and Arkansas. His grave has the name Ollie V McSwain. We have not discovered what the initial V stands for. But he had a cousin in North Carolina named Oliver Victor, so his name may also be Victor. His name is misentered on the Arkansas Death Index as McSwaine, one of the many ways we see the name spelled over the decades. Arkansas Death Index, 1914-1950 Ollie Mcswaine Death 27 Jan 1927 Arkansas County His year of death on the gravestone is 1927, as on the Arkansas Death Index. But Ancestry.com's transcription of the Arkansas Death Index has misentered the year as 1929. Ollie V. McSwain Birth Oct. 2, 1902 Arkansas Death Jan. 27, 1927 Arkansas Parents: Joseph E. ---------------------- My father was Jack Osborne McSwain, he died in Pembroke Pines, Florida, his father was William Boyd McSwain, who was married to Bonnie Mitchell, had 3 boys, she died and he remarried Mary Kiser, they had 2 girls. Next comes Osborne Benjamin McSwain, he was married to Amanda Childers, they were from down about Cherokee county S.C., Osborne's father was Thomas Asbury McSwain, mother Alice (Aly Ann) Carpenter, then comes Charles McSwain who was married to Luraner Washburn McSwain, he and she had abt. 16 children together, she died, I should have her death date somewhere in my records, probably in the 1840s, he then married my g.g.g.grandmother Sarah L. Throckmorton. Charles's father was David McSwain, I think his mother was Catherine Robertson. -- Larry McSwain, personal Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 5 December 2014 ---------------------- "The first wife of William Boyd McSwain was Bonnie Mitchell, daughter of Hiram and Francis Clercie Sizemore Mitchell, she had the 3 boys by William, (William Boyd JR., Jack and, Robert) my step-grandmother Mary Kiser had Betty and Carolyn who I really through the years haven't got to know. I have not determined the month of publication of the City Directory. The report of Seagraves as residence may be an error by the newspaper in the compilation of the Obit, since Marie's brother in the list of survivors just before her was reported as living in Seagraves. A Social Security record appears to be for Owen, but the date of birth here is 5 Jul 1910, while family genealogies report the date as 5 July 1909. It had to be 1909 because of the 1910 census report, when he was already 10 months old in May 1910. The Social Security record indicates his SS number was issued in Arizona. He probably went there after the war, when he was stationed in California.
