Jerry Robnette's genealogy reports that William Holden's mother (Ethel Holden McSwain's grandmother) was Margaret Criswell. Margaret was enumerated in the 1880 census in her father's home as a widow name Margaret Wigley, with several stepchildren named Wigley. John Holden is Ethel's brother. So it is unclear why he is reported as Russel's nephew. It would be possible if John's mother Jane was a sister of Russel. I do not know Jane's maiden name, and cannot find a Jane McSwain among these families that we might connect here. It could also be just an enumerator error as the relationships of Margaret Wigley. An entry in the 1930 census reported Oregon Knowlton, Jr's marriage to a Ruth A, but I had no further clues to determine who this was. I had not had all the family information at that time. I was finally able to clarify this relationship in April 2008, when I received an email from Kenneth Wirt McSwain, so on Wirt Barnard McSwain and Connie L Jones. In our series of emails about his family, he made an incidental reference to his father's sister Ruth's marriage to Oregon Knowlton. Their marriage record was not found until 2012. Ruth's brother Marvin McSwain, age 16, is living with them, as well as a niece Lorene Noble. Loren is the daughter of Alma Ruth and Marvin's sister Bernetta Octavia McSwain and Benjamin Noble, who lives nearby. Bernetta and Ben married in 1924, but divorced before the 1930 census. Ben is enumerated in his parent's household on their nearby farm, while Bernetta has not been found in this census. She and Lorene are enumerated in Stuttgart in the 1940 census, under Bernetta's maiden name McSwain. The census information indicates that Ruth and Oregon had been married between two and three years time in April 1930 when the census was taken. No children are shown in this family. Oregon married Emmie H West in 1934. This means that he and Ruth were divorced no later than 1934. We know from other sources that Ruth A McSwain married Ray (Oswald Eugene) Recroft in 1935. You can find details of that marriage in the Notes for Oswald. The first record I find of Samuel O McSwain, Jr, is the 1850 census. His father died in abt 1838, according to information in the Hamrick Data Pages. In 1850 his mother Mary (Lovelace) McSwain is head of the household with her three children, Asa, Lucinda and Samuel. I had found Mary McSwain with her children in the 1850 census, but her husband had already died at that time. The Hamrick Data Pages connect Samuel to the McSwain and Hamrick line. This enables me to connect them to persons already appearing in this genealogy. This makes it appear suspiciously that the Zechariah in the McSwain household in 1850 was actually Lucinda's husband. The Zechariah McSwain in the 1850 census is reported as 22 years old, meaning he would have been born in about 1828. The Zechariah McKinney who married Lucinda McSwain is reported by the Hamrick Data Pages as born in about 1819! If the Hamrick dates are all correct, this would mean that 14-year-old Lucinda married Zechariah when he was about 40 years old. This seems somewhat unreasonable. The census seems to indicate that both Lucinda McSwain and Zechariah McSwain were married within the last year. This probably means that Zechariah is Lucinda's husband. Since the Hamrick pages give the name of Lucinda's husband as Zechariah McKinney, the enumerator probably erred in giving Zechariah and Lucinda the McSwain name of her mother and siblings. But aside from the name problem, this probably means it is more likely that his age in the census is correct, making him closer to 15-year old Lucinda at age 22, and born in about 1828. Their daughter Meldonia might also have been born later than the year given by Hamrick, since not only these but many other dates in that collection are wrong. On Sam's memorial on Find a Grave, his middle initial is transcribed as D rather than O. No photo of the stone is provided. Samuel D. David Holden has great detail about the McSwain lineage, though little or no documentatoin. He reports Sarah as the daughter of Thomas McSwain's second wife Frances Bridges. But at the time Sarah was born, her father's wife was Jane McSwain. Jane died in Sept 1817, perhaps in childbirth with Sarah. This Sarah McSwain is a sister of George McSwain, whose wife Catherine and children migrated to Arkansas. The Greene-Bridges source did not have her parents or a date of birth as a reference. Dates on the birth of the daughter of William and Judith Moore McSwain vary somewhat and appeared to be too early to fit this match.
