I'm glad to hear from You Orville, my line goes like this, My father was Jack
Osborne McSwain, he died in Pembroke Pines, Florida, his father was William
Boyd McSwain, who was married to Bonnie Mitchell, had 3 boys, she died and he
remarried Mary Kiser, they had 2 girls.

Next comes Osborne Benjamin McSwain, he was married to Amanda Childers, they
were from down about Cherokee county S.C., Osborne's father was Thomas Asbury
McSwain, mother Alice (Aly Ann) Carpenter, then comes Charles McSwain who was
married to Luraner Washburn McSwain, he and she had abt. 16 children together,
she died, I should have her death date somewhere in my records, probably in
the 1840s, he then married my g.g.g.grandmother Sarah L. Throckmorton.

Charles's father was David McSwain, I think his mother was Catherine
Robertson.

The child John in the 1850 census does not appear in the 1860 census with the
family, when he should be 10 or 11 years old. This means he must have died
before the 1860 census. I found a Mortality schedule listing that would
match, but the image of the sheet is not available, so I cannot confirm this
is the correct John McSwain. It is in the right county, but there were a lot
of McSwains in this county.

Note that his age in the 1860 census indicates Thomas was born about 1853, but
his grave has an exact birth date of 10 March 1855. A genealogy that lacks
some details, like Thomas' parents, gives us Thomas' middle name and other
details, seemingly from family sources.

Notes for Tissie MCSWAIN

There is some uncertainty about the specific identity of Lester McSwain's
mother. Family tradition and the 1900 and 1910 censuses report Lester as a
grandson of Phillip McSwain.

Cyrus Lester McSwain Jr, Kevin's father and Lester's son, also tells us that
his father's mother was named Tissie. Perhaps Tissie is a name that appears
in other families in the late 1800s. Perhaps there are some other pieces to
this puzzle we can eventually uncover to clarify the scenario. Information
from a McSwain descendant in Texas, Judy McSwain Miller, indicates that Cyrus
Lester's father was likely John McSwain, son of John Franklin McSwain and Mary
G (Unknown maiden name).

Great grandson Kevin McSwain says that the mother of Lester (Cyrus Lester
McSwain Sr) died in childbirth. He also reports that Lester's mother was
buried in an unmarked grave.

"Thank you for the information and I may be able to shed some light, Lester
McSwain (Cyrus Lester McSwain Sr) is the Grandson of PK McSwain. All I know
is one of his daughters had him out of wed lock and died during child birth.
The father was a cousin 3 times removed, John McSwain, and left for Texas and
married. I know this because Lester McSwain is my grandfather Lester's son my
father is Cyrus Lester McSwain jr. of DeWitt, AR still living. Lester McSwain
wife's my grandmother was Eunice McSwain."
-- Kevin McSwain, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 17 January 2007

It appears that Tissie was born after the 1880 census. Her name never appears
in a census. Two or three genealogies report her birth year as 1878, but they
provide no evidence. No birth, death or burial record has been found for
Tissie McSwain. If she was born in 1880 or 1881, she could have been old
enough to have a child in 1899. She would have been 16 or 17 when she became
pregnant. In that case we will have no evidence, unless there is a birth
certificate on file somewhere.

Lester is reported as 1 year old in the 1900 census. The Social Security
Death Index reports Lester's exact birth date as 16 Mar 1899. I have used
this for the date of death of his mother Tissie (or Tisey).

"Phillip also left him an equal share of his property when he died."
-- Shirley Rowland Mitchell, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 8 April 2015

Lester's date of death is reported as Nov 1987 in DeWitt, the county seat 20
miles from Ethel, where he was born and lived with his grandfather Phillip as
a child.

Kevin McSwain told me no one knew where she was buried. We assumed she was
buried on the family farm, given the circumstances. Our understanding was
that PK specifically buried her without a gravestone, as indicated above. In
2019, someone put up a memorial for Tissie on Find a Grave reporting she was
buried in Mt Pleasant Cemetery, the community cemetery in Ethel where many
McSwains and related people are buried. My wife and I had both been through
that cemetery thoroughly several times and know there is no stone for her
there, matching what Kevin said.

This in itself certainly does not mean she was not buried there. I contacted
the memorial creator to learn how he had come to know Tissie wa buried in Mt
Pleasant and how he came to such a precise year of birth. Michael Utley,
creator of Tissie's burial memorial, told me he got his informatoin form
Kevin, his second cousin, the same person who was my source! He said a
coupple of years ago, Kevin told him the story of Tissie, and said she was
buried in Mt Pleasant.

Mike said Kevin told him Tissie was 13 when she became pregnant, while in 2007
Kevin said they were not sure and she wsa about 14-16 yeaers old. Michael had
determined the birth year as 1885 by subtracting 13 from her child's known
birth date. Tough this sounds more confident and exact than how Kevin sounded
when telling me the story, I remember how uncertain these details were to
Kevin when he was telling me the story in 2007. These differences seems to
indicate only how uncertain the family actually is on these details.

Most sources lack the name of David McSwain's father. His mother's name is
likewise unknown. A few sources have a birth date for David's father.

David's father:

Clan MacQueen
SCOTTISH RAMPANT LION

The Macqueens or Clan Revan are a Celtic race. They were of the Hebrides, and
the founder of the clan is supposed to have been Roderick Dhu Revan MacSweyn
or Macqueen. In the thirteenth century Castle Sween, in Kintyre, was occupied
by MacSweens. There were MacSweens among the Lamont clansmen executed at
Dunoon in 1646.
The ancestor of the MacEwans was called Swene MacEwan. The Hebridean Macqueens
were subject to the Lords of the Isles. The Macqueens of Corrybrough, an
offshoot, settled in Strathdearn. When the 10th Mackintosh married Mora
MacDonald of Moidart, Revan-MacMulmor MacAngus and Donald MacGillandrish came
with the bride, and settled near her new abode.

John and Sweyn Macqueen signed the Clan Chattan Bond of 1609. Captain Donald
Macqueen, 7th of Corrybrough, died in 1813. He was succeeded by his son,
Donald, Captain 2nd Madras Cavalry, who was succeeded by his brother, John
Fraser Macqueen, Q.C. He died in 1881. The chiefship, but not the estate, fell
to his brother, Lachlan, of the East India Company. Lachlan died in 1896, and
was succeeded by his only son, Donald, as Chief, who was resident in New
Zealand.

The Macqueens of Pollochaig, Clune and Strathnoon are the leading cadets. The
Clan MacSweyn is officially regarded as distinct from that of Macqueen, and
the arms of the MacSweyn Chief have been registered as such.

----------------------

The McSwains are related to both the McQueens and the McDonalds/MacDonald
clans, and are a part of the clan confederation famously known as the Clan
Chattan. There are McSuain sub-septs in McQueen and McSwain sub-septs in
McDonald, and you will find references to various configuration and suggested
Tartans related to those two broad clan groups. In Ireland, the name is
associated historically with the McQueens, and the name is found in the
Sweeny, McSweeney and other variations of the descendants of the same
ancestors.

As well as being descended from the Viking settlers, some of whom first came
as mercenaries, they claim descent from the original Irish High Kings.

----------------------
MacQueen History
From the gaelic 'Mac Shuibhe' or 'son of Sweyn', the MacSween clan claim
kinship with the Irish high kings, of the same descent as the great clan
Donald.

A number of MacQueens are said to have provided an escort at the marriage
between the daughter of the clan Ranald and the chief of clan MacKintosh.
After this union took place, many of them did not return to their homelands
but chose to settle around the Findhorn valley. This branch of the family,
known as clan Revan became part of the great federation of clans known as Clan
Chattan and by the sixteenth century they were in possession of the lands of
Corrybrough. They became a prominent and important family of the district.

The MacQueen clansmen are also numerous on the islands of Skye and Lewis and
yet another branch of the family held lands at Castle Sween in Argyllshire.

The Hebridean branch of the MacQueens have long enjoyed a reputation as
outstanding fishermen and also boast of having the Rev. Donald MacQueen as a
kinsman. He was a minister on the isle of Skye in the eighteenth century and
was described as "the most intelligent man in Skye". He was looked up to by
his kinsmen and also won the admiration of Dr. Samuel Johnson, who was
introduced to him on his famous tour of the Western Isles.

From the eighteenth century onwards the fortunes of the MacQueen clan failed,
and the chiefs are believed to have emigrated to New Zealand. The family are
now widely scattered throughout Scotland and much of the English-speaking
world, and the chiefship of the clan is not established at the moment.

Walter married about 1908 or 1909. In 1910 he is living in a neighboring
county, White Oak Township of Franklin County. His wife's name is scrawled
and uncertain. It appears to begin with the letter U or V. In the 1920
census she is clearly Deana L. I suspected her maiden name was Burnett, since
they are living as a second family in the same household with an older couple
named Burnett, with other children still in the household. This is confirmed
by the California death record of their some Willard Thomas McSwain, which
reports his mother's maiden name as Burnett.

In 1910 Walter is married and the couple are living with her parents Fred and
Rebecca Burnett. The wife's name is scrawled and hardly readable. Walter's
daughter is also hard to make out, being also overwritten. Another
genealogist has suggested the name is Hermond, which makes sense, and could
also match the equally hard to read 1920 census entry.

Ancestry has transcribed their address backwards, making it appear they lived
in Blacksburg South Carolina, with an RFD address in Cleveland County, North
Carolina. The death certificate actually says they lived in Cleveland County,
but their mailing address was Rt 1, Blacksburg, South Carolina. Blacksburg is
just across the border into South Carolina, from Cleveland County, North
Carolina. McSwain and Mullinax famliles in this genealogy lived on both sides
of the current border between the two Carolinas, from the time when it was
still one colony of Carolina, before the border was settled.

I found Walter's gravestone information in a transcription of grave
information by W D Floyd, who has performed the great service of transcribing
so many cemeteries. The gravestone has the date of burial instead of the date
of death reported by the death certificate.

Wiley Carew always went by the name Carew.
He had been sick some time before he died. An autopsy discovered cancer and
it is presumed that was the cause of death.

Carew was 3 years old when he was first enumerated in the census in residence

A Russell McSwain, age 21, is a boarder in the household of John and Julia

unclear where this Russell came from or how he is kin to them. Like the
others he was born in Arkansas, and both his parents were born in North
Carolina.

This Russell is listed in later censuses as Russell A McSwain, and had a son
named Russell also. In November 2011 descendant of John Franklin McSwain told
me that John had a son named Russell, along with John, Charlie and her
ancestor George. I had found records for only George. Russell goes in that
slot in the family puzzle.
