Williard's middle initial changes in the censuses. I have found no other
documentation of what name these initials might have stood for or why the
enumerator would have confused the middle name. It seems clear that his
middle name was Thomas.

Notes for William MCSWAIN

William McSwain (b 1806) was a Baptist pastor. David was the son of David M
McSwain and Susannah Hamrick (called Sarah Susannah by some). His wife Judith
is described on her burial information in the Beaverdam Baptist Cemetery as
the wife of Rev William McSwain. His burial information likewise identifies
him with the title Rev. The 1850 census identifies William as "Baptist
Clergyman" and 1860 as "Baptist Minister."

The burial information gives 1806 as the birth year, with the exact date of 28
Feb 1806. The Hamrick Data Pages also report this date as William's birth
date. In the 1880 census, William's age is 74, which matches birth in 1806.

The 1850 census leads to a birth year of 1806, based on his reported age of
44. His wife Judith (Hamrick) is reported to be 41 in 1850, which yields a
birth year of 1809.

Polly, David, George and Elijah are out on their own now. Elijah and his wife
Susanna (Hamrick) are living next door in house #956. A few houses down from
William we find David and his wife Delphia (listed in this census as Delfa)
with their daughter Judith V, age 1.

The 1880 census records a William McSwain with an age that makes him born in
1806, whose wife is reported simply as J, seeming to be Judith Moore.

J, presumably the correct Judith Hamrick, has an age consistent with her birth
in 1809 reported in genealogies. Two children are living in the home, one a
widowed daughter. B McSwain here matches Berry McSwain who appears in the
family lists. M Lovelace matches Mary Polly McSwain, widow of William
Lovelace. Note the black female servant Lucy McSwain also in the household.

Next door is a couple that appear to be William's cousin Mary McSwain married
to James Hamrick. Mary is reported as age 65 (born in 1815), matching the
daughter of William's uncle, also a William McSwain, born in 1792, son of
William David McSwain Jr. and Mary Nancy Bridges.

One genealogy on the Ancestry.com collection One World Tree (sm) gives the
date and place of death as 1850 in Winnetka, Illinois. This data is for a
different William McSwain, who may not be part of this McSwain line. Our
William McSwain, son of David McSwain and grandson of William David McSwain
Jr, was still having children in Cleveland County, North Carolina at that
time. His daughter Judith Margaret was born in Cleveland (formerly
Rutherford) County in December 1851.

Some genealogies have not been careful or consistent about the place names for
birth and death. Very few comment to explain why they have the data they do,
or indicate they are aware there is any discrepancy or uncertainty to deal
with.

In the eastern states, county names can be a problem, since colonial colonies
were divided up as populations and infrastructure grew. Tryon County
originally was about the western half of North Carolina, and had been carved
out of Mecklenburg County in 1769. Mecklenburg had earlier been formed in
1762 from Anson County. Tryon lasted from 1762 till 1799, when it was divided
into Rutherford and Lincoln Counties. The name Cleveland County comes into
being in 1841 when Rutherford was divided, and boundaries were reconfigured.
I have tried to use the name current at the time, but I have probably not been
consistent. I have had to follow secondary sources for many locales.

genealogy or two tells us his full name was William August, which accounts for
the nickname Gus, and the diminutive Gussie. But Gussie is normally a girl's
nickname, so it is understandable that the enumerator misunderstood when
taking down the list of children's names he was given.

William, McSwain Jr

Marriage 13 Nov 1833 Rutherford County, North Carolina

This marriage record reports William as William Jr. Knowing from other
sources that his middle initial is B, this would mean his father was also
William B McSwain. But I have found that in that era, they used the
designation Junior even in cases where the middle name was not actually the
same.

Another record reporting the bond reports the witnesses to the marriage.

Notes for William B MCSWAIN

This William McSwain was the husband of Nancy Bridges, marrying her in 1811.
William McSwain is the son of William David (II) McSwain and Judith A Moore.
William David is listed as only David in some sources.

Paul Sarrett estimates year of birth based on 1800 and 1810 census. He gives
1793 as year of birth, based on age 7 in 1800 census and age 17 in 1810
census. Other sources give 1792, a common figure. I am not sure how Sarrett
gets such exact ages, since the ages of these early censuses are just in a
range of years, under 5, 5-15, 16-25, etc.

Some genealogy compilations have confused this William McSwain with his nephew
William, born in 1806, son of this William's brother David. For example,
Sarrett's report for Ainsley (or Ensley), son of William (1806) and his wife
Judith Hamrick, is reported with the correct mother, but the father William is
reported as born in 1793.

as "Coach" in the Hamrick information is Coatsworth in the census. The latter
seems the more likely actual name. Similarly, Finetta appears where Hamrick
has "Finnettle." The latter name is actually Finettie, as David Holden has.
The 1880 census spells it Finetty, while in 1860 it was Venetta.

Notes for William Boyd MCSWAIN

----------------------
My father was Jack Osborne McSwain. He died in Pembroke Pines, Florida. His
father was William Boyd McSwain, who was married to Bonnie Mitchell, had 3
boys, she died and he remarried Mary Kiser, they had 2 girls.

Next comes Osborne Benjamin McSwain. He was married to Amanda Childers. They
were from down about Cherokee County SC. Osborne's father was Thomas Asbury
McSwain, mother Alice (Aly Ann) Carpenter. Then comes Charles McSwain who was
married to Luraner Washburn McSwain. He and she had abt 16 children together.
She died. I should have her death date somewhere in my records, probably in
the 1840s, he then married my g.g.g.grandmother Sarah L Throckmorton.

Charles's father was David McSwain, I think his mother was Catherine
Robertson.

William was widowed early, being reported as the widowed father of 7-year-old
William, in his mother's hosuehold with his two younger single brothers.
However, Mary's granddaughter Susan Howard reports that Maybelle was not
Mary's middle name but was Mary's twin sister who was stillborn. She also
reports that Mary was not fist marrie dot someone named Jack as those
genealogies report. Boyd McSwain, whom we report here, was her first husband.

given. Mary had a twin, Maybelle who was still born but Mary survived. Mary
Kiser married William Boyd McSwain (known as Boyd). This was her first
marriage his second. They had two daughters Betty (my mother) and Daisey
Carolyn. Boyd died from pneumonia and complications from Diabetes. Mary
later married Arthur Echols Early, no children between the two but he had
several from his first marriage. After his death she married Maurice Eggers,
they had no children and there were none from his first marriage. Mary’s
daughter Betty is living but Daisey Carolyn is deceased."

The Hamrick Data Pages source records this family, but lacks birth dates for
most of the children. Note that the estimated date for almost all is either
1860 or 1861. The Hamrick compilation has Arelia's name as Arrienia. The
census entry for 1860 would make one thing the proper name was Aurelia, a
popular name in that era. Since William could not read and write, the
enumerator probably just did the best he could. One family genealogy does in
fact list her as Aurelia.

-- Dunbar,
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12060416/person/-343532584?ssrc=&ftm=1

However, another family source reports her name as Arrenia. It would seem
this is her proper given name.

"My father's grandmother was Josina A McSwain Bridges the youngest child of
William D and Arrenia McSwain. My dad has told me stories of talking to
William Henry McSwain (Uncle Henry) and aunt Frank (Frances or Frankie
McSwain) when he was a boy. He is now 87 and I have some 1st hand accounts
and other info I have found."
-- David Bridges, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 2 March 2017

The child called Vianna by Hamrick matches the child reported in the census as
Vina C. This name is probably short for Levina, or Lavinia. Many women with
variations of this name were called Vina, Viney or other variations of this
nickname. The Hamrick pages had a list of all the children, but some seem to
be first and middle for the same child. Vianna (Vina in the census) seemd to
match Vina C in the census, and there is no Selena in 1860, but Selena could
match the middle initial C (Celina?) in the 1860 census.

Note the unlikely approximate dates of birth, two children born in 1860 and
four in 1861! This source does not tell us which children were born to which
wives. But goig by the death date of Frankie, they would all be hers. None
of these six can be the children of Frankie, however, since in 1860, she would
have been about 70 years old! But this is old even for Thomas to father
children.

I note additionally that the Hamrick information combines two children
reported in the 1860 census, called William H and Anonymous. This odd name is
a given name for several individuals in Cleveland County in the 1800s.
Hamrick combines these two children in William Anonymus. William Henry lived
until 1948, while Anonymous died as a chld before 1870.

Frankie would be Frances (spelled Francis in the census). Henry might be an
additional child, but could also be the H of William H in the census, since
Hamrick has combined the name William with Anonymous (Anonymus). The Hamrick
listing adds one child not in the 1860 census, Josina.

A basic military record reports the Confederate Regiment he joined in the
Civil War. Note the middle initial D here.

His more complete military record reports that William died ("was mustered

Several genealogies report his name as William D, with the date of death 4
July 1870. This matches the registry listing for a William McSwain in the
Boiling Springs Cemetery. The date of birth is not given, but age to the day
is reported as 48 years, 1 day. This would make his birth date 30 June 1822.
However William's age in the 1860 census is 35, making birth about 1825, while
the Hamrick Genealogy reports him born about 1826, which would be too late.

Notes for William David MCSWAIN

After several years of review and comparing sources, it seems likely that this
William David is the same person some sources report as David. Birth dates
vary, so the names get entered as separate individuals sometimes. This
William David shows up as David or as William. I still show another child
named David. This is likely the same person as this, with a different
reported (estimated) birth date, usually 1721, whereas a common estimated date
for William David (or David) is 1725.

Most genealogies report this date of birth, and state he was born on the ship
form Skye. However, the date of landing reported and documented in port
records was 1731. It did not take 6 years to cross the Atlantic. So even
though there is no documentation of his birth in Scotland, it seems he had to
be born there or was born in 1730 or 1731 instead.

A marriage record gives us David's full name of William David, which many
genealogies lack. Both David and William were popular names in the McSwain
clan and continue to be today.

U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900
William David McSwain
Spouse Name Susanna Hamrick

Douglas McSwain in his McSwain Genealogy
(http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/c/s/Doug-Mcswain/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0001.html)
seems to indicate that his entry for David is the same as the other entry I
have here from various other sources as William David.

Most sources list the place of birth for this William David McSwain as "On the
open sea, Isle of Skye, Scotland". It is not clear from this if they mean he
was born on a ship that happened to be out at sea at that time, from its base
in Skye, or if they mean on a ship that had set sail for America from Skye.
Likely the latter. But then it is not logical to include Isle of Skye in the
location for place of birth.

It appears to me that William David (William I, or William David Sr) was born
on the ship taking his parents to North America. Various events find them in
Pennsylvania, Virginia, then North Carolina. Sources differ on the
birthplaces of some children. But there is the problem of time frame
mentioned above, with the year of birth normally reported as 1725, but the
record of his father's debarkation in the colonies is dated in 1731.

------------
[David McSwain] and his son, among other family groups (Bridges, Hamricks,
McSwains, Ledbetters and on) found property to be expensive and hard to obtain
in the more settled areas of VA, PA etc. They joined groups from Germantown
PA, Prince William, VA and came down what was called the great wagon trails or
road in to the Charlotte/Mecklanburg area of North Carolina.

They headed west in to the area known then as Tryon and Rutherford counties,
found suitable farmland and water sources and hacked their homeplaces from the
wilderness and Indian country. ... The people we are interested [in] had
homeplaces on what is now known as Buck Ford Road (old Buck McSwain house my
dad called it) and what I will call the James Bridges homeplace.

This is not certain, since we have indications of our David McSwain's presence
in Rutherford County, North Caorlina, before this date and after this date.
It does appear that the phonetic form McSwine was one of many forms
interchanged with the standard form McSwain and the more common alternate
spelling McSwane, which is still used by some current families. The Orange
County location matches the marriage record location.

I actually have a piece of the log cabin that David McSwain lived in, I've got
it under my house, the cabin was called the Buck McSwain place, it was down

way doing research and the man that tore down the cabin had the logs from it
under a shed, he sawed me off a piece several feet long.

I also have a copy of the book David McSwain from the Isle of Skye that

Notes for William David MCSWAIN

There is some discrepancy between sources on whether William David and his
brother David (John David) were born in Orange County, North Carolina or in
Virginia. Some sources express uncertainty between these two locations for
the sister Priscilla, which some sources do not list in the genealogy. Due to
the line of migration from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, there is reason to
believe that the older son David was born in Virginia.

Cleveland County was created out of Rutherford and a bit of neighbouring areas
in 1841. Thus some sources might differ or overlap in the use of the names.
I have noticed that some sources even place events in "Cleveland, Rutherford."
Some sources are also unclear as to whether they intend a city (or township or
location) name or a county name.

Some sources refer to William and his father as William I and William II. But
they are not commonly referred to as William (David) Sr and Jr. Some sources
just give the same full name for both, but without any sequential
designations.

Then one source refers to William II and his son as William Sr and William Jr.
But I do not find sources that clearly inform us that the third William's name
was William David, which you would expect if he is a Junior to his father who
was William David II.

This William McSwain appears to be the one whose military gravestone is found
in the McSwain Cemetery in Cleveland (then Rutherford) County, North Carolina.
This has no dates but indicates he was a member of Brevard's Company #10 in
the Revolutionary War.
-- McSwain Cemetery list, http://www.rfci.net/wdfloyd/cemm5.html

In the 1800 census there is a listing for three McSwain household (spelled
McSwaine) in York District of South Carolina, the area bordering Rutherford
County, North Carolina. McSwains lived across this border area. With only
the names of heads of the household and ages reported in broad age ranges,
there are not enough details to definitely confirm the persons reported.

But these three appear to be the sons of William David McSwain, who was born
about 1725 and died about 1780. I have not seen any one else analyze this and
other early censuses of these McSwains. Maybe someone else will probe this
and provide clarification.

I analyzed these census entries in October 2010, and compared with other
earlier sources already reported and analyzed. None of these men are in the
age range over 44 years old, though the older brother John David (called David
in some sources, but the only one to match this John) should be, since family
sources indicate he was born about 1750. I do not know of three other
McSwains with similar names in this area at this time that these entries might
represent.

The following entry appears to be for William David McSwain born about 1762.
But this John David, or David, was born in about 1750, so he should be 50 and
in the next category. Even with the discrepancies, it seems likely this is
the three brothers, sons of William David McSwain, born about 1700, who died
about 1780.

1800 Federal Census, York District, South Carolina, page 962 (scan 626)
David McSwaine 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-44
2 females under 10, 1 female 26-44
3 members of household under 16, 2 over 25

The will of William lists all his children [See below]. Note that the second
child is referred to as Polly, yet the name in other sources is either Mary or
Mary Margaret. I find Polly is a common nickname for women named Mary in the
1800s. There are several McSwain children named Mary but called Polly. Some
sources seems to indicate that a child is named Mary Polly. This is a
conflation of the name with the nickname. The same child will be listed in
one census as Mary and the next census as Polly.

Sarah is listed in the will as Sally, a common nickname for Sarah. The
witness Hugh Kerr is a great great grandson of William David.

David Holden, who has extensively researched the McSwain and related lines,
provides a good summary of this family. He reports two sons here, David and
William, which have been conflated by some into one son, while some have
conflated the son William shown here (born 1806) with the father William (born
1793). Some report William born 1793 as the husband of Judith Hamrick (b
1809), instead of or as well as Mary Nancy Bridges. Judith Hamrick was the
wife of his son William (b 1806). One limitation to Holden's online research
is that he does not provide write-ups or details on sources.

David has different parents for William (born 1762) than my research and that
of others have concluded. The David McSwain born in 1734 in Maryland appears
to be a different person, and I can find no connection between that David's
wife Hannah Jones and our William or William David McSwain born in 1762. His
father appears to have been William David McSwain (b 1725 in a ship on the
Open Sea between Skye and Pennsylvania), and his mother Susannah Hamrick (also
b 1725 in Rutherford District, North Carolina).

On this 14th day of August 1846 personally appeared Elizabeth McSwain in open
Court now sitting and after being first duly sworn according to law doth on
her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the
act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832, that she is the widow of William
McSwain deceased, who was a private Soldier in the North Carolina Continental
line, and as such served the United States in the War of the revolution for
the term of 18 months that he resided in the State of North Carolina, when he
entered the Service, and that this Claimant now asked of the Government for a

William's daughter Sonja has collected and posted details about William on her
genealogy on ancestry. Included below is a story she has given us. Sonja
mentions that her father moved to Marlow, Oklahoma, where she lived.

U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 1
William McSwain
Birth Date: 7 Oct 1923
Address: 120 W Ballpark Rd Apt 41, Marlow, OK, 73055-9010 (1996)

His Social Security Death Index record indicates he was living in Duncan when
he died. She indicates he died in a hospital there.

---------------------------
My Dad (William Harold McSwain) was the kindest man I have ever met. The worst
cuss word I ever heard him say was "damn". He and my mom divorced in 1966, I
have to say it was mainly my dads fault as he had a bit of a drinking problem
in his early years and I really didn't get to know him very well, It wasn't
until his later years he moved to my town Marlow, OK. I was so proud of him,
he quit drinking and smoking all at the same time, I know that was very, very
hard for him, but I finally got to know my dad and I am so thankful for the
time I got to spend with him. He died in Duncan hospital with Septic, as you
probably know Septic is an infection that is usually passed on to another from
unsanitary places such as Duncan Hospital........ I tried for years to get
something done about that place but failed, lawyers said something like that
was hard to prove... I could go on and on for pages but I won't...I am just so
very thankful for the time we spent together.... He loved my mom very much and
never remarried, in his later years he expressed how my mom deserved so much
better than what he dished out, and I could tell in his eyes how much he loved
my mother. My mother loved him too, she never remarried. It's sad to look back
and see what liquor or any other drug can totally ruin a persons life and take
away all the things they love most.

I LOVE YOU DADDY

My daughter Jamie House was adopted as I was unable to have children of my
own. We picked her up straight from the hospital and she is as much mine as if
I had her myself, however, no blood line. My dad was an only child and I am
his only child so I guess since I had no children this McSwain line ends here.
