Notes for Addie Katherine MILLER

A Miller family genealogy provides the name of both Addie's parents, but little
more.

But the genealogy did direct me to the 1910 census of Addie and her parents.
Addie is just 7 months old when she is recorded in the 1910 census with her
family in Palo Pinto County, Texas.

Notes for Anna Belle MILLER

Bertie McSwain tells us that George's stepdaughter was age 12 when his wife
Emma Cornelia adopted her after George's death.
-- Bertie Lois Dumond McSwain, Family Information 1979

George died in 1925, so this would put Anna Belle's birth year at about 1913.
The census of 1930 reports her as age 16, so it could have been in 1914.

It was thought that Anna Belle was a child of George's previous wife. I have
not found an actual marriage date for George and Emma Kinard Dumond. A Dumond
genealogy by Ralph Dumond reports they married in 1913. This is problematic
for the status of Anna Belle as the daughter of George's previous wife.

If Anna Belle was only 16 in 1930, and George was her step-father, he could
not have married her mother before 1914, perhaps in 1913 right after Anna
Belle was born or even while her mother was still pregnant with her.

The only way I see that George could also have married Emma Kinard Dumond in
the same year when Anna was born is if her mother died in childbirth and he
mariried Emma immediately. In this case Emma raised her, but did not adopt
her until George died, as family tradition tells us.

It is unclear where this child was in 1920, since she was not enumerated with
George and Emma. The census reports no children in their home. And I can
find no record of her elsewhere under the name Miller.

I finally found her in the 1930 census, with Emma, designated as an adopted
daughter. She is reported born in Missouri, and both her parents born in
Missouri. This confirms that she was not George's daughter, since George was
born in Mississippi. I have not discovered the name of George's first wife or
of Anna Belle's father.

1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 18 April, Prairie Township,
District 24, Page 11B, Hse #225, Fam #226(?) (Some family numbers are
duplicated)
Miller, Emma Head Owns F W 62 Widow First married at age 18 AR GA GA No

Miller, Anna Belle Adopted Dau F W 16 Single MO MO MO

Anna Belle is 16 here, and the family knows that she was about 12 when George
died and Emma adopted her. This means that George died about 1925. This is
consistent with George's known death date, 27 January 1925.

Notes for Callie Donna MILLER

Kelly (Callie) and another sister Lucy are reported by Bertie L McSwain, but
are missing from the 1880 census. Bertie did not know for sure where they are
in the birth order. Bertie did not provide birth dates but lists Lucy before
Fannie and Kelly after Fannie. In the 1900 census, both these daughters are
in the household of their father John Miller. Here we learn they were both
born after 1880. Kelly appears as the widowed Callie Crabtree, age 17, with
her son Elden (Eldon). Lucy is age 15, and single.

Their father is reported as Widowed, even though their mother is also reported
in this census, living alone a few doors down, and also reported as Widowed!
So between the birth of Lucy in 1884 and the 1900 census, John and Mary
divorced. Probably acrimoniously, since both report in the 1900 census that
they are widowed. In the 1910 census, John still reports he is a widower,
while Mary is reported as divorced!

Additionally Paul reports that Callie married a third time to a man named
Bell, with no further details. But her California Death Record (see below)
has her name as Bell.

Another census provides Callie's middle name Donna, matching the initial D in
Paul Houston's genealogy. But strangely she has the first name as Clara, even
though on an accompanying photo the name is Callie.

Notes for Cass Eugene MILLER

The first record I found for this person was the 1910 census, when he is living
with his own household, next door to his widowed father George H Miller and
his older single brother Tom. The name of the head of household looks like
Jeane, which I cannot make sense of as a man's name.

A genealogy found at this point with the extra clues I had, clarifies the
name. Jean's full name was Eugene, but his nickname was spelled Jean, rather
than the common form for a male name, Gene. In the 1910 census, his name is
entered as Jeane.

In Jean's WWII draft registration his wife is called Sallie M Miller. With
her lising as May in 1910, this tells us her full name was Sarah May, despite
the genealogy above naming her Mary.

The relationship of the Wright individuals to the Millers is not clear. They
be half-siblings, or more likely step-siblings, of Robert Miller. Jesse's
birth date in 1997 is a year earlier than reported by him in his WWI draft
registration and in the Social Security records. The earlier report, in this
case, would seem to be the more likely correct, reported, we assume, by his
parents.

Notice that the date of birth on the draft card is different by two days from
the date on the Social Security records below. I don't understand the import
of the name of the town Monticello, Arkansas, written below his name. His
residence is reported as Van, which is in Arkansas County, while Monticello is
two counties farther south in Drew County. In general, I give more weight to
the earlier date, especially where it appears to be reported by the individual
themselves. As commented above, this principle leads me to support the date
reported in the 1900 census by his parents. Thus the year will come from the
1900 census, but and the day comes form the WWI draft registration. Further
records may clarify this at a future time.

George has aged only 7 years in this census. The age discrepancies show up
for all this family. According to his age in this census, George would have
turned 15 after this census. However, the family genealogy cited above
reports his birth date was 15 April 1845. If that birth date is correct, then
he was already 15 before the July census date. This is still two years off
from the 1850 age reported.

George was incorrectly transcribed in the 1900 census, and I did not find it
until after the 1910 census. But information in the 1910 census provided
clues, which turned up George and his first wife Sarah P in 1900. The names
of their children helped fill out the family picture. Four sons are reported
here. By 1900 George and his first wife have been married 34 years.

There was a wife between the censuses known by family tradition, and the
presence of an adopted daughter in the 1930 census. In 1920, George is with
his third wife Emma Kinard, widow of Edward Caliste Dumond. The adopted
daughter known as Anna Belle, is not with them, and I have not found her in
1920. But in 1930 she is with her widowed step-mother Emma at age 16. Thus
she should have been about 6 years old in 1920

George married Emma Kinard Dumond in October 1913. So the second wife died
before that time. Anna Belle could have been born earlier in 1913, and
perhaps her mother died in childbirth.

Notes for Jennie MILLER

Jennie never appears under the name Virginia, but we would expect that to be
her full proper name. Some genealogies list her that way. Most stick with
the records and family name Jennie.

Mr Seamons is thought to have died, but I have not found his death
information. Nor have I found any record of him after they married. They
married in 1884. Jennie's real name was Virginia, as we might expect, but the
only document I have found using that name is her marriage record.

The name of the head of household is smudged, partially faded and
overwritten. Ancestry.com transcribes it as Pleas S. The first name may be
Pleasant, which is a man's first name in many families in the 1800s.

The section of the sheet containing this family is faded, so parts of letters
are illegible, only certain heavier strokes appear. Some are also smeared or
smudged. The birth dates are generally clear, but some numbers are faded.
The enumerator's e's are closed, but somewhat rounded, while the i's are
straight and usually clearly dotted.

I note that Jennie is shown with an occupation, Dairy Farmer, different from
her husband's occupation of simply Farmer. Were they operating two separate
farm homesteads?

Note that all the children are reported as children of Mr Simmons, though we
know the Seamons (Seemons) children are the children of Thomas Seamons, who
died before this census and Jennie's marriage to Mr Simmons. Also the last
listed is shown as older than the other two girls. The oldest is usually
listed first.

The Seemons name is partially faded, and is written only on the first entry,
that for Lillie. Lillie's name is spelled here the way the family sources
spell it, and as it is spelled in her obituary. The census of 1910 also
spells it Lillie, but in 1930 it is spelled Lilly.

The last child listed is hard to read. The name is largely faded. It is
appears to be Tempa, matching the family information in the name Tempie. It
is transcribed by Ancestry.com as Amka. The k is not clear, and the lower
part looks like some of the p's on this page. The first letter is mostly
gone. It appears this name could be a form of the name Tempie. At any rate
it seems to match that child, who appears in this census, but is probably the
child reported in the 1910 census, as having died. The child reported as
Tempie in family sources had no birth or death dates. The full name of this
child was likely Temperance.

In 1910, Jennie is listed with her children in the household of her father, J
W Miller. His record here reports he is a widower, however, his wife,
Jennie's mother is listed below, three houses away with Jennie's sister
Josephine! Mary is reported as Divorced, not widowed. Some records here are
hard to read, due to the enumerator's sloppy penmanship. The record indicates
that Jennie is divorced, which matches information discovered from family
sources. Jennie and her second husband Pleasant Simmons divorced between the
1900 and 1910 censuses.

1910 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 5 May, North Prairie, District

Seamans, Ethel Granddaughter F W 16 AR AR AR Laborer, Home Farm
Simmons, Arthur Grandson M W 13 AR TN AR Laborer, Home Farm (born abt 1997)

The ages vary wildly here for Lillie and Ethel. In 1900 Ethel was 12, which
matches her birth date known by the family as 19 Jul 1889. The birth date
reported in the census, however, partially faded, appears to be April 1888,
which is wrong. In 1930, her age is 41, which is still within range. But in
1910, we see her age is said to be 16, only 4 years older than in 1900!

In this 1910 census, Lillie is reported as 20, only 5 years older than in
1900. Her birthday is reported in 1900 as November 1884, while the family
records her birth date as 11 November 1886.

Arthur Simmons is the son of Jennie's second husband, whose first name is
Pleas, short for Pleasant. Since the last census, Jennie has divorced Mr
Simmons. Also one child has died, as now only 3 of her 4 children is reported
as living. This must be the child called Tempie in family sources, and
probably listed as Amka or similar in the faded entry in 1900.

Note that the birthplace of Jennie's mother is now shown as Alabama, not New
York. Ancestry.com has the surnames of the Seamans members of this family
badly mistranscribed, with every one of them having a different name. The
closest to what is actually written is Lille Seamens. The family did spell
the name as Seamans at times. The more common spelling seems to have been
Seamons.

In 1930, Jennie has moved into the household of her daughter Ethel Oral
Seamons Dumond.

This census reports Jennie's mother as born in Vermont instead of New York.
1910 said Alabama. 1900 said Mississippi. While Jennie was still in her
parents' home in 1880, at age 13, her mother's birth state was said to be New
York. That census reported that Jennie's maternal grandmother was born in
Vermont.

In the 1940 census, Jennie is reported in the home of another daughter, Lilly
Huser. The enumerator got her name wrong and reported her as Janice.

In 1940, Lillie's mother is living in her household.

Notes for John C MILLER

John Miller was born in Prussia. The original form of his name, in German,
then, would be Mueller. Either he had translated it to the English
equivalent, or it was written that way by the census enumerator. His
children, however, born in Mississippi, also use the English spelling.

Likely, as so many other German immigrants in this period, he simply
translated his name to the English word. Many Germans named Groene or Groen
did the same, translating the name to the English Greene or Green. Likewise
Braun and Brown. The first US record I have found for John and his family is
his marriage record in Alabama.

The ages of Sarah (8 F b Arkansas) and Martha J (6 F b Arkansas) match the
sequence to be the two youngest children of John and Sarah Miller. But the
unreadable second name of Sarah looks like a surname. Maybe the unreadable
name Fra... is a middle name, but it is the same for both Sarah and Martha.
There is no ditto following to indicate this is also a Miller. Maybe the
ditto for Martha J is for the family name Miller? Some genealogies have no
children after Nancy Elizabeth. Both Martha and Sarah are reported again in
the 1870 census and Nancy appears under her middle name Elizabeth.

John was an immigrant from Prussia who arrived in St Charles about the same
time as Col Charles Belknap. Belknap commissioned Miller to build his mansion
in St Charles, which thereafter became the showplace home of the town. It
took John 3 years to complete the mansion. During the Civil War, after the
Union forces captured St Charles, the mansion was turned into a hospital until
the war's end.

"Spanish Founder Named St. Charles For King"

Topic: Role of Colonel Charles W. Belknap in the founding of St. Charles,
Arkansas
Topic: German Immigrant Carpenter John W. Miller Built the Belknap Mansion

Although St. Charles was not an incorporated town for many years after it
first began to be settled, it is one of Arkansas' oldest communities - perhaps
second only to Arkansas Post.

It is listed in Spanish Grant No. 2404 made to Pedro Perturis in 1797 by
Estevan Miro, governor of Louisiana.

A trading post was established on the White River at that time for the purpose
of buying furs from the Indians, and it was given the name St. Charles in
honor of King Charles IX of Spain.

When the town of St. Charles was incorporated in 1875 it comprised 160 acres
of the northeast corner of the old Spanish grant.

The town actually was platted in 1852 when Col. Charles Belknap had it
commissioned. The original plat, however, was never recorded. Twenty-seven
years after the establishment of St. Charles' post office in 1848, the town
became incorporated. Col. Belknap was the first postmaster.

Leading new settlers to the St. Charles area was Charles Belknap, a Kentucky
colonel in 1849. He bought a large Spanish grant on the river and numerous
other lands about St. Charles, some of which he later sold. He brought with
him his immediate family and two brothers.

The Colonel was a man of vision and superior native intellect, was educated,
and an optimist who went right to work improving the settlement he moved into
giving himself in public service to the community and the county.

Soon after arriving, he hired a young German carpenter, John W. Miller [It
woiuld have been John C Miller, whose son John W was born only in 1843], who
had arrived by boat to St. Charles about the same time as Belknap, to build
his big adobe residence. Miller was three years completing the 17-room
mansion which became the showplace of St. Charles.

Because of its size, Belknap had to give his home up during the Civil War when
Union troops took it over for a hospital. He moved back into it after the war
and lived there until his death in 1882. The house was a gathering place for
both old and young for many years.

During the Battle of St. Charles, the Confederate fort was behind the Belknap
house. Belknap was in the fort with Captain Joseph Fry, encouraging the
soldiers and helping direct the defense of St. Charles. But because he was
not a member of the Confederate military forces, he violated rules of war. He
and Captain Fry were captured, court martialed and sentenced to be shot the
next morning. When before the firing squad, Belknap reportedly give the
Masonic sign of distress. The captain of the firing squad, also a Mason,
consulted Fry, another Mason, and let Belknap go.

The little town saw much tragedy during the Civil War days. Numbers of its
residents were murdered, including women, and the people lived in constant
fear as long as the enemy was around - and Union soldiers held St. Charles a
good part of the time during the War.

In 1880 a widowed daughter E (Elizabeth) Holbert and her children are living
with John and Nancy. The Boarder reported in their household, Sam (William
Sam) DeBerry, married Nancy Elizabeth (E Holbert) about 1882.

Also a sister of mother Nancy, Mary Noel (family sources later indciated this
name as Neal, though it is clearly Noel in the census). As Mary is reported
as single, the maiden name of Mary and Nancy is likely Noel (Neal). The
sister is age 40, so we might expect her to be married. Since, however, she
is reported as an invalid, this might indicate she had been invalid all her
adult life and had never married.

Since Mary Noel is reported as Single, I have concluded that Noel is the
maiden name of Nancy and Mary. Since Noel is originally a French word/name,
this might indicate that their family originated in France. The Miller family
genealogy I later found confirmed that Nancy's maiden name was Noel (later
corrected to Neal from family sources), but had not further info on the
origins of the family. Nancy was born in Alabama.

The Stocks Family genealogy reports Nancy's maiden name as Neal, rather than
Noel, as it appears in the 1880 census and in a couple of genealogies. This
genealogy provides lots of details, like John's nickname of Dusty, and
marriage and death dates, giving the impression that the details are coming
from family sources. Unfortunately, the compiler provides no documentation or
explanation at all by which to judge. Some other genealogies in a set that
appear to have copied form each other or used the same undocumented sources,
use the name Neal and some report Nancy's parents, her father being John Neal.

I found the marriage record, and Nancy's name is Neal there.

Notes for John William MILLER

Nancy Miller 45 F House Keeper b Alabama
John Wm (William) Miller 17 M Farm Laborer b Mississippi

Note that John is 11 in 1850 (born about 1839), then in 1860 he has aged only
6 years to 17 (born about 1843). The 1900 census reports his birth date as
December 1844. If this is correct, then the enumerator or his parents
confusedly reported an actual 6-year old as an 11-year old 1850. Hard to
figure. In 1880 he is 38, making birth about 1842. The first age given in
1850 is way off compared to the others.

The Carcy here is Carson Wallace (Wallis), Mary's with from her first husband.
Note that Mary's birth place is reported as Louisiana. This is a puzzle,
since all other sources report her born in New York. But this is obviously
the same person, since her son Carcy (Carson) is reported here, consistent
with the 1880 report.

1880 Federal census, Arkansas County, Arkansas lists this family. All the
children of John W and Mary were born in Arkansas.

Josephine Miller W F Dau 9 AR MS NY

Ellen Miller W F 5 Dau AR MS NY

The name Tannie is a mistranscription from the handwritten census information,
for the correct name Fannie. This is in line with many other typos in the LDS
online version of the 1880 census.

Likewise there is an error in the transcription of the child Josephine, which
is clearly readable, though slightly faded. The census transcription names
this child Joesy [actual spelling]. It is interesting that they have
substituted a nickname, when the actual entry is readable as Josephine. These
same errors occur in the Ancestry.com information, since they have taken the
1880 census transcription of the LDS library.

The report of Carson Wallace as a stepson of John W Miller indicates that Mary
Wallis Miller was previously married to someone named Wallace. (This is
probably only another spelling for Wallis.) The Miller genealogy reports that
John and Mary married in 1865, so Carson's birth in about 1863 would indicate
that John was not his father. John and Mary got married in the home of Mrs
Sarah Wallis. This, then, must be Mary's mother-in-law from her first
marriage. As of October 2008, I do not have further information about the
Wallis/Wallace family.

Two children, Lucy and Kelly (Callie), reported by Bertie L McSwain, were born
after this census and first reported in 1900 with John. Their mother is still
living at this time, but not with her husband John. Mary is living in her own
house, alone, a few doors down. Both are reported as widowed. Callie is only
17 but already widowed, with a 2-year-old son.

The 1910 census records for John and Mary are very interesting. J W Miller is
listed as head of the household with his unmarried children, of whom Jennie is
the oldest. He is a widower. However, his wife Mary is listed below, two
houses away with their daughter Josephine Almond! Mary is reported as
Divorced.
