Bertie McSwain tells us that George's stepdaughter was age 12 when his wife Emma Cornelia adopted her after George's death. -- Bertie Lois Dumond McSwain, Family Information 1979 George died in 1925, so this would put Anna Belle's birth year at about 1913. The census of 1930 reports her as age 16, so it could have been in 1914. It was thought that Anna Belle was a child of George's previous wife. I have not found an actual marriage date for George and Emma Kinard Dumond. A Dumond genealogy by Ralph Dumond reports they married in 1913. This is problematic for the status of Anna Belle as the daughter of George's previous wife. If Anna Belle was only 16 in 1930, and George was her step-father, he could not have married her mother before 1914, perhaps in 1913 right after Anna Belle was born or even while her mother was still pregnant with her. The only way I see that George could also have married Emma Kinard Dumond in the same year when Anna was born is if her mother died in childbirth and he mariried Emma immediately. In this case Emma raised her, but did not adopt her until George died, as family tradition tells us. It is unclear where this child was in 1920, since she was not enumerated with George and Emma. The census reports no children in their home. And I can find no record of her elsewhere under the name Miller. I finally found her in the 1930 census, with Emma, designated as an adopted daughter. She is reported born in Missouri, and both her parents born in Missouri. This confirms that she was not George's daughter, since George was born in Mississippi. I have not discovered the name of George's first wife or of Anna Belle's father. 1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 18 April, Prairie Township, District 24, Page 11B, Hse #225, Fam #226(?) Kelly (Callie) and another sister Lucy are reported by Bertie L McSwain, but are missing from the 1880 census. Bertie did not know for sure where they are in the birth order. Bertie did not provide birth dates but lists Lucy before Fannie and Kelly after Fannie. In the 1900 census, both these daughters are in the household of their father John Miller. Here we learn they were both born after 1880. Kelly appears as the widowed Callie Crabtree, age 17, with her son Elden (Eldon). Lucy is age 15, and single. Their father is reported as Widowed, even though their mother is also reported in this census, living alone a few doors down, and also reported as Widowed! So between the birth of Lucy in 1884 and the 1900 census, John and Mary divorced. Probably acrimoniously, since both report in the 1900 census that they are widowed. In the 1910 census, John still reports he is a widower, while Mary is reported as divorced! 1900 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 27 June, Prairie Township, District 7, page 19A, Hse #333, Fam #341 Miller, John E (should be W) Head W M Dec 1844 65 Widowed MS Germany AL Farmer Owns Miller, Lucy Dau W F Sep 1884 15 Single AR MS NY Crabtree, Callie Dau W F Nov 1882 17 Widow 1 child/1 living AR MS NY Crabtree, Elden Son W M July 1897 2 Single AR AR AR Paul Houston provides excellent details about Callie and her two marriages. This is still two years off from the 1850 age reported. George was incorrectly transcribed in the 1900 census, and I did not find it until after the 1910 census. Ancestry.com transcribes it as Pleas S. The first name may be Pleasant, which is a man's first name in many families in the 1800s. The section of the sheet containing this family is faded, so parts of letters are illegible, only certain heavier strokes appear. Some are also smeared or smudged. The birth dates are generally clear, but some numbers are faded. The enumerator's e's are closed, but somewhat rounded, while the i's are straight and usually clearly dotted. I note that Jennie is shown with an occupation, Dairy Farmer, different from her husband's occupation of simply Farmer. Were they operating two separate farm homesteads? Note that all the children are reported as children of Mr Simmons, though we know the Seamons (Seemons) children are the children of Thomas Seamons, who died before this census and Jennie's marriage to Mr Simmons. Also the last listed is shown as older than the other two girls. The oldest is usually listed first. The Seemons name is partially faded, and is written only on the first entry, that for Lillie. Lillie's name is spelled here the way the family sources spell it, and as it is spelled in her obituary. The census of 1910 also spells it Lillie, but in 1930 it is spelled Lilly. The last child listed is hard to read. The name is largely faded. It is appears to be Tempa, matching the family information in the name Tempie. It is transcribed by Ancestry.com as Amka. The k is not clear, and the lower part looks like some of the p's on this page. The first letter is mostly gone. It appears this name could be a form of the name Tempie. At any rate it seems to match that child, who appears in this census, but is probably the child reported in the 1910 census, as having died. The child reported as Tempie in family sources had no birth or death dates. The full name of this child was likely Temperance. In 1910, Jennie is listed with her children in the household of her father, J W Miller. His record here reports he is a widower, however, his wife, Jennie's mother is listed below, three houses away with Jennie's sister Josephine! Mary is reported as Divorced, not widowed. Some records here are hard to read, due to the enumerator's sloppy penmanship. The record indicates that Jennie is divorced, which matches information discovered from family sources. Jennie and her second husband Pleasant Simmons divorced between the 1900 and 1910 censuses. 1910 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 5 May, North Prairie, District 12, page 8A, Hse #144 Miller, J W Head M W 63 Widowed MS Germ AL Farmer Seamans, Jinnie Daughter F W 40 borne 4 children, 3 living AR MS AL Seamans, Lillie Granddaughter F W 20 AR AR AR Laborer, Home Farm Seamans, Ethel Granddaughter F W 16 AR AR AR Laborer, Home Farm Simmons, Arthur Grandson M W 13 AR TN AR Laborer, Home Farm (born abt 1997) The ages vary wildly here for Lillie and Ethel. In 1900 Ethel was 12, which matches her birth date known by the family as 19 Jul 1889. The birth date reported in the census, however, partially faded, appears to be April 1888, which is wrong. In 1930, her age is 41, which is still within range. But in 1910, we see her age is said to be 16, only 4 years older than in 1900! In this 1910 census, Lillie is reported as 20, only 5 years older than in 1900. Her birthday is reported in 1900 as November 1884, while the family records her birth date as 11 November 1886. Arthur Simmons is the son of Jennie's second husband, whose first name is Pleas, short for Pleasant. Since the last census, Jennie has divorced Mr Simmons. Also one child has died, as now only 3 of her 4 children is reported as living. This must be the child called Tempie in family sources, and probably listed as Amka or similar in the faded entry in 1900. Note that the birthplace of Jennie's mother is now shown as Alabama, not New York. Ancestry.com has the surnames of the Seamans members of this family badly mistranscribed, with every one of them having a different name. The closest to what is actually written is Lille Seamens. The family did spell the name as Seamans at times. The more common spelling seems to have been Seamons. John Miller was born in Prussia. The original form of his name, in German, then, would be Mueller. Either he had translated it to the English equivalent, or it was written that way by the census enumerator. His children, however, born in Mississippi, also use the English spelling. Likely, as so many other German immigrants in this period, he simply translated his name to the English word. Many Germans named Groene or Groen did the same, translating the name to the English Greene or Green. Likewise Braun and Brown. The first US record I have found for John and his family is his marriage record in Alabama. Alabama Marriages, 1809-1920 (Selected Counties) John C Miller Spouse Nancy Neal Ceremony Performed by C. There is no ditto following to indicate this is also a Miller. Maybe the ditto for Martha J is for the family name Miller? Some genealogies have no children after Nancy Elizabeth. Both Martha and Sarah are reported again in the 1870 census and Nancy appears under her middle name Elizabeth. John was an immigrant from Prussia who arrived in St Charles about the same time as Col Charles Belknap. Belknap commissioned Miller to build his mansion in St Charles, which thereafter became the showplace home of the town. It took John 3 years to complete the mansion. During the Civil War, after the Union forces captured St Charles, the mansion was turned into a hospital until the war's end. ------------------------------ "Spanish Founder Named St. Charles For King" Topic: Role of Colonel Charles W. Belknap in the founding of St. Charles, Arkansas Topic: German Immigrant Carpenter John W. Miller Built the Belknap Mansion Although St. Charles was not an incorporated town for many years after it first began to be settled, it is one of Arkansas' oldest communities - perhaps second only to Arkansas Post. It is listed in Spanish Grant No. 2404 made to Pedro Perturis in 1797 by Estevan Miro, governor of Louisiana. A trading post was established on the White River at that time for the purpose of buying furs from the Indians, and it was given the name St. Charles in honor of King Charles IX of Spain. When the town of St. Charles was incorporated in 1875 it comprised 160 acres of the northeast corner of the old Spanish grant. The town actually was platted in 1852 when Col. Charles Belknap had it commissioned. The original plat, however, was never recorded. Twenty-seven years after the establishment of St. Charles' post office in 1848, the town became incorporated. Col. Belknap was the first postmaster. Leading new settlers to the St. Charles area was Charles Belknap, a Kentucky colonel in 1849. He bought a large Spanish grant on the river and numerous other lands about St. Charles, some of which he later sold. He brought with him his immediate family and two brothers. The Colonel was a man of vision and superior native intellect, was educated, and an optimist who went right to work improving the settlement he moved into giving himself in public service to the community and the county. Soon after arriving, he hired a young German carpenter, John W. Miller [It woiuld have been John C Miller, whose son John W was born only in 1843], who had arrived by boat to St. Charles about the same time as Belknap, to build his big adobe residence. Miller was three years completing the 17-room mansion which became the showplace of St. Charles. Because of its size, Belknap had to give his home up during the Civil War when Union troops took it over for a hospital. He moved back into it after the war and lived there until his death in 1882. The house was a gathering place for both old and young for many years. During the Battle of St. Charles, the Confederate fort was behind the Belknap house. Belknap was in the fort with Captain Joseph Fry, encouraging the soldiers and helping direct the defense of St. Charles. But because he was not a member of the Confederate military forces, he violated rules of war. He and Captain Fry were captured, court martialed and sentenced to be shot the next morning. When before the firing squad, Belknap reportedly give the Masonic sign of distress. The captain of the firing squad, also a Mason, consulted Fry, another Mason, and let Belknap go. The little town saw much tragedy during the Civil War days. Numbers of its residents were murdered, including women, and the people lived in constant fear as long as the enemy was around - and Union soldiers held St. Charles a good part of the time during the War. Since, however, she is reported as an invalid, this might indicate she had been invalid all her adult life and had never married. Since Mary Noel is reported as Single, I have concluded that Noel is the maiden name of Nancy and Mary. Since Noel is originally a French word/name, this might indicate that their family originated in France. Likewise there is an error in the transcription of the child Josephine, which is clearly readable, though slightly faded. The census transcription names this child Joesy [actual spelling]. It is interesting that they have substituted a nickname, when the actual entry is readable as Josephine. These same errors occur in the Ancestry.com information, since they have taken the 1880 census transcription of the LDS library. The report of Carson Wallace as a stepson of John W Miller indicates that Mary Wallis Miller was previously married to someone named Wallace. (This is probably only another spelling for Wallis.) The Miller genealogy reports that John and Mary married in 1865, so Carson's birth in about 1863 would indicate that John was not his father. John and Mary got married in the home of Mrs Sarah Wallis. This, then, must be Mary's mother-in-law from her first marriage. As of October 2008, I do not have further information about the Wallis/Wallace family. Two children, Lucy and Kelly (Callie), reported by Bertie L McSwain, were born after this census and first reported in 1900 with John.
