Wilson, OK - Services for Rogers Maurice Morgan, 75, of Simon, will be at 10
a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Buddy
Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Morgan Rest Cemetery under the
direction of Alexander Funeral Home.

Born March 31, 1933, in Cheek, to Erskin Davenport and Clara Shaw Morgan, he
departed this life Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at his home. He was preceded in
death by his parents and a sister, Brenda Smith.

He was raised in Simon, attending school there and in Orr, and later attended
high school at Meadowbrook. At Meadowbrook he was an All State Basketball
Player and was part of the team that won the State Basketball State
Championships his junior and senior years. He first attended college at
Cameron Junior College in Lawton and later won a basketball scholarship at
Midwestern in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was a member of the team for four years
and received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He later received his Masters degree
from East Texas State in Commerce, Texas. Adding to his achievements, he
played one year of semi-pro basketball.

He married Katherine F. Jackson, July 18, 1953, in Ardmore. They had recently
celebrated 55 years of marriage together, and as Rogers would say, 55 years of
marriage to my “Wonder Woman”.

He was a teacher and a coach of the Boys and Girls High School Basketball
Teams in Antelope, Texas for two years. He was also a High School Basketball
Coach in Lockett, Texas for three years before serving as the principal at
Lockett Grade School for eight years. He also taught and coached in Ryan for
two years before moving to Vernon, Texas in 1969. There he coached the High
School Boys Basketball Team for two years, served as Vice Principal at the
Intermediate School and Principal at Shive Elementary for 20 years. He
returned to Simon to live at his family’s farm in 1995 where he loved to
farm and loved his cattle. He spent hours in the pasture tending to the farm
and cattle.

He also loved finding time to fish. He had a very devout love for his family
and students. He was always outgoing and loved visiting with his family,
friends and even strangers. He was a very kind and generous man with a
terrific sense of humor and loved everyone he knew.

Survivors include his loving wife, “Kat”, of the home; two sons, Ricky
Lynn Morgan and wife, Beverly, Allen, Texas; and Michael Glenn Morgan and
wife, Jenny, Spring, Texas; grandchildren, John-Henry, Mary Glenn, Emily Clair

Notes for Sarah J MORGAN

Some discussion on genealogy discussion lists on this family indicate that no
firm evidence has been found on the time of death of Charles S Gibson. It is
presumed he died before his widow Sarah Morgan Gibson married Jorile Barnett.

Illinois Marriage Index, Book 2, Page 16
Barnett, Jorial -- Gipson, Sarah 1/15/1857, Jefferson County, Illinois

Sarah's daughter Nancy Jane later married Jorile's son Francis M (Frank).
They are recorded in the 1880 census for HIll County Texas, next door to
Jorile (J R) and Sarah.

Another Barnet reseracher reports:
"I have not found out when Sarah died yet. She was a widow in the early 1890s
and living in Nolan County, Texas."
-- Barbara Stevens, Ancestry.com Discussion Group, 20 Mar 2005,
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.stonewall/86.123.1.2.2/mb.ashx

One genealogy reports that Sarah died in Oklahoma (which was still Indian
Territory at that time). No documentation or details are provided. Several
of the Barnett family had moved to Indian Territory.

Petersburg is now a ghost town, one of several in Jeferson County. Jefferson
is on the Red River, north of Montague County and Clay County, Texas.
Jeffrson County is bordered by Love County on the east and Stephens County on
the north.

Charity Cherry Morris Gilbert
Birth 1800
Death 1854

From: Barbara Elliott, (I am a direct descendant of Charity and Mable Gilbert,
therefore, I respectfully submit some info for your consideration. This
information is all over the internet and in books at SMU and Bonham, Texas.)

Charity Morris married Mabel Gilbert about 1820 in Dickson County, Tennessee.
Before they moved from Tennesee, she bore one daughter and six sons. They
settled in Fannin County, Texas in 1837. Six more children were born in Texas.

Charity's wisdom and bravey dealing with the Indians in the area is documented
in area history. She was the first white woman to set foot on Dallas soil. Her
son, Morris, was the first white child born in Dallas in 1842. Her daugher
Hettie was the first white child born in Wichita County.

This wonderful woman is a Texas pioneer who brought honor to the Gilbert name
and left a long line of descendants to carry on her legacy.

Hettie's Mother was Mabel's second wife, Rachel Gibbs Albright Freeman. They
were married in the same year as Charity's death, 1854. [The marriage record
reports a date of 18 December 1855.] Hettie was born in 1860.

Spouse Mabel Gilbert (1797 - 1870)

Children:
Newton Gilbert (1832 - 1880)
Jasper M. Gilbert (1832 - 1870)
Tennessee Gilbert Taylor (1838 - 1867)
Louisiana Gibert Pace (1840-1860)

Notes for Sarah E MORRIS

The Russell-Collier Genealogy cites an email from Richard Davis, of the Green
Family Genealogy, to report that Sarah's maiden nmae was Morrison, and she
married Anderson Green about 1827, and died about 1871. The genealogy had no
information about Sarah's parents.

We can conclude they married in North Carolina, since their first 3 children
reported in the 1850 census were born in North Carolina. The rest were born
in Georgia, where they were enumerated in the census for Carroll County..

Notes for Susannah MORRIS

Susannah Morris was the second wife of John McSwain. John's first wife Judith
Moore died in 1824, and he married Susannah in 1840.

There are several different reports of a birth date for Susannah. W D Floyd's
transcription from the McSwain Cemetery reports the marker reads: "McSwain,
Susan 96 years [means b abt 1775] March 1, 1871 w/o John."
-- http://www.rfci.net/wdfloyd/cemm5.html

This birth date differs by 10-15 years from other sources!

The age reported on the gravestone is suspicious, since in the 1860 census,
she was reported as 75 years old! This would mean she was born in 1785.
Perhaps Mr Floyd misread the age. I know numbers on old gravestones can be
hard to decipher. If the age was 86, this would match the age in the 1860
census. In 1850, Susannah is reported as 64 years old, meaning born about
1786. This would make her 8-9 years older than John, whose birthday is
reported by family sources as 28 August 1794. In 1850 John's age was 55. In
the genealogy My Maternal McSwain Ancestors, Ran Raider says Susannah also was
born in 1794.
