Some sources report Mary "Polly," which seems to indicate Polly was a nickname. This combination of Mary and Polly was very popular in the 1800s. In some cases it seems to be a nickname for a woman named Mary. In others it seems to be a second name for the person named Mary Polly, with the person in the census sometimes as Mary and sometimes as Polly. Different genealogies report Mary Polly's birth in North or South Carolina. It appears the family lived near the border. Dorothy Mullinnix reports birth more specifically as in Lincoln County, North Carolina. -- http://www.gencircles.com/users/annmull/1/data/717 Mary Polly Mullinax Birth 2 Jul 1821 in Lincoln, North Carolina Death 5 Mar 1889 in Talking Rock, Pickens, Georgia Parents Isaac Mullinax 1791-1878, Rachel Lowery 1793-1881 Marriage to Mariman Moss 17 May 1840 Georgia -- Brendel/Padgett Family, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/7018845/person/-1181259506 1850 Federal Census, Gilmer County, Georgia, 5 October, Subdivision 33, p 773, Hse/Fam #540 Merriman Moss 35 M Doctor $1000 Real Estate b South Carolina Cannot read or write [born abt 1815] Mary Moss 29 F South Carolina Cannot read or write [born abt 1821] Rosanna Moss 9 F Georgia [born abt 1841] Mary I Moss 7 F Georgia [born abt 1843] Huldah Moss 5 F Georgia [born abt 1845] Cordelia Moss 3 F Georgia [born abt 1847] Mary's gravestone shows her name simply as Polly Moss. One source in One World Tree (Ancestry.com) reports this person as the daughter of William and Sarah Mullinax, but with the last name of Mullins. It is not clear what this should indicate. it is true that the name Mullins and Mullinax are forms of the same name, Mullins lacking the Celtic ending. But these names are normally found in separate family lineages. I do not know why this daughter would be surnamed Mullins. Perhaps this was just an inadvertent error that this researcher did not catch in editing.

And one census records his name as Madison instead of Matison. Originally I thought his wife was Louisa Forrester, since Mat and his wife Louisa are living three doors away from Louisa's mother Zenith (Barnes) Forrester. But other sources led me to determine that Mat's wife was Louisa Jane Jordan. Family genealogies provide more details abotu Matt and his family. This Matthew may be in the wrong place. He appears in some sources, but the birth date is the same year as John S Mullinax, another child in this family in some genealogies. The dates of birth are uncertain estimates. I have done some critical comparisons of sources and various persons named Matthew, but have not worked this out yet.
Matthew and Dorothy (Dorothea) moved from South Carolina to Alabama then on to Arkansas. Most genealogies have only one child, a son, Franklin W Mullinax. The middle name was William. Some sources have the name as William Franklin and others as William Franklin. I am informed by Sarah Mullennix that the family descendants list the name as William Franklin. In Alabama in 1860, we find William in the same household with his parents, serving as a public school teacher. With him is his wife Lydia, called Liddy, but listed in the census as Liddo O Mullinax, age 18. This is Lydia Obedience Autry. She was born in Tennessee, according to this census entry, but Sarah Mullinix, a researcher of the Mullinax lineage, informs me that she was born in Mississippi. 1850 Federal Census, Franklin County, Alabama, 17 December, District 6, page 72, Hse #572, Fam #512 Matthew Mullinax 48 M Farmer SC Dorotha Mullinax 48 SC (makes birth seem to be in 1802) Franklin W Mullinax 18 M Farmer SC 1860 Federal Census, Franklin County, Alabama, 13-14 September, Eastern Subdivision, PO Frankfort, page 80-81, Hse #580, Fam #583 Mathew Mullinax 58 M Farmer SC Dorothy C Mullinax 61 SC (C seems to be for maiden name Canada) [b abt 1799] Wm F Mullinax 26 M Farmer SC Public School Teacher Liddo O Mullinax 18 TN William F is their son (listed as Franklin W in 1850), with his wife Liddy (Lydia Obedience Obedience Autry). My cousin Gerald Lynn Mullinax has prepared the folliowng memorial for Robert Hezekiah Mullinax on Find A Grave Memorial Database. ---------------------------------------- Robert Hezekiah Mullinax Birth Jan. 7, 1843 Kings Mountain Township, York County, South Carolina Death Jul. 22, 1903 Jasper, Pickens County, Georgia Robert Hezekiah Mullinax joined the Confederate States of America May 10, 1862. He joined the 36th Regiments Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Company L (Pickens County, GA.) along with three of his brothers James J., Benson J., and Marion Francis and Robert's brother-in-law John McIntyre. They assembled in Dalton, GA. during the winter of 1861-1862. Their Company served first in Tennessee, then Mississippi where it was part of T.H. Taylor's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It fought at Champion's Hill and Vicksburg, where it surrendered July 4, 1863. After being exchanged (an unusual event of more modern day wars) the Regiment was brigaded under General Cummings and fought with the Army of Tennessee from Chattanooga to Nashville, The Atlanta Georgia Campaign and the Carolina's Campaign. In January 1865 it was consolidated with the 56th Georgia Regiment. As originally organized, the Regiment had 930 men. It suffered 43 casualties at Chattanooga and reported 267 men and 213 arms in December of 1863. When it consolidated (in which the three brothers had rejoined after surrender at Vicksburg) 232 men were present for duty. Only a handful of the men surrendered on April 26, 1865.
