In 1880, Jerrome is living in the household of his brother Elias along with
two other brothers. Here the brother matching most closely the age/birth date
of Jerrome in the previous census is listed as Dalton J. Thus we can deduce
that his full name was Dalton Jerrome. Note that his nephew, Elias' son, is
named after him.

Another Mullins researcher, Charlotte Claborn, reports the names of his
bothers as Brantley wrote them on his application for recognition as an Easter
Cherokee. It is odd that he does not list the name of Dalton Jerrome. Could
this be because he is a half-brother, the son of Jane, rather than Elizabeth?
The date of death of Elizabeth is uncertain. I had supposed she died in
childbirth with Jerrome in 1863. But this and his absence from Brantleys list
of brothers indicates he is Jane's son, not Elizabeth's.

"Doctor Brantley Mullen in his eastern cherokee application stated his
brothers names were: Christopher Columbus Mullins, Elias Mullow Mullins, Mc
Pierson B. Mullins, and that he had no sisters."

Notes for Edward MULLINS

Like many prominent lineages of Ireland, the Mullins line has Norman
connections and perhaps origins. The "Anglo-Irish" were really Anglo-Normans,
associated with the Norman nobility who supported William the Conqueror when
he invaded England in 1066 to claim the crown of the Anglo-Saxons.

Ireland was a hard land to tame, and concerted efforts really made headway
under King Edward I, who was also trying to subdue the Scots, by coercion,
bribery, military and political repressions and terror. The era of Robert the
Bruce engaged King Edward with a resurgence of Scottish revolt.

The Anglo-Norman Irish gradually melded into the Irish cultural and genetic
landscape of the native Celtic nobility they married into, becoming more Irish
in culture and temperament than Norman or English. The following writeup by
another genealogist presents an excellent summary of possible origins of the
Mullins name and lineage and some pertinent points from history.

==========================
Surname: Mullins

There are two accepted sources for this surname when found in Ireland. The
first is as an Anglicized form of the Old Gaelic "O'Maolain," a byname which
translates as "the descendant of the tonsured one," indicating perhaps a
devotee or follower of an unspecified saint. Alternatively, the byname may
refer simply to one who looked like a monk or who had monkish qualities.

The second source is Anglo-Norman: Mullins in this instance being a
development of the French "moulin," meaning "mill," and denoting one who was
resident at such a place. The pointer to this second source may be contained
within the Coat of Arms which includes a gold cross moline on a blue field.

Whether of Gaelic or Anglo-Norman origins, nameholders have regularly made
their mark in history, James Mullins of Dublin (1721-1776) being a Royal
Academician and landscape painter of international repute, whilst earlier in
1658, Robert and George Mullins, of Taunton in England, were convicted of
being "Monmouth rebels," and were deported to the West Indies as slaves.
Nearly as unfortunate was James Mullins of Newry, County Down, who was a
famine emigrant on the ship "Robinson" bound for New York in May 1847.

Examples of name recordings are those of Daniel Mullins of Ballyhay, County
Cork, on October 4th 1796, and James Mullins of Palmerston District, Dublin,
on July 8th 1865. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to
be that of Joseph Moline, which was dated November 16th 1658, a witness at
Derry Cathedral, during the reign of Richard Cromwell, known as "The Lord
Protector," 1658 1659. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced
personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax.

Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to
"develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
There are three O'Maolian septs, one located in County Galway, one in the
counties of Derry and Tyrone, and a third in County Cork. The maritime county
of Cork, in Munster, is bounded by the sea on the south-west, the south and
the south-east.

To the east it has land boundaries with the counties of Waterford and
Tipperary, and to the north with Limerick and to the west with Kerry.
Anciently the country formed part of the kingdom of Desmond. After the
Anglo-Norman Invasion the whole of the present county, save the City of Cork
(which had been founded by the Vikings) and its surroundings, was granted in
1177 by Henry II to Anglo-Norman knights who brought over their followers and
established a military colony.

They all provide the ancestry of families called Mullin, Mullen, Millen,
Mulhane and Mulhane. The name was derived from the Gaelic O'Maolain, and the
name is now widespread in all provinces, predominantly found in Ulster. Early
records of the name mention Ralph de Molins, 1159 Ireland. When the sparse
Irish population began to increase it became necessary to broaden the base of
personal identification by moving from single names to a more definite
nomenclature.

The prefix MAC was given to the father's Christian name, or O to that of a
grandfather or even earlier ancestor. At first the coat of arms was a
practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in
tournaments. With his helmet covering his face and armour encasing the knight
from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the
insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and
flowing garment worn over the armour.

The name was also occasionally used as an occupational name from the
Anglo-French 'moulin' meaning one who lived or worked by a mill. The mill,
whether powered by water, wind or occasionally) animals, was an important
centre in every medieval settlement; it was normally operated by an agent of
the local landowner, and individual peasants were compelled to come to him to
have their corn ground into flour, a proportion of the ground corn being kept
by the miller by way of payment.

The brother following Christopher matches the child listed in the family's

is scrawled as well as faded. The overall configuration appears to be
Jefdavies (For Jefferson Davis?). But this would seem odd for this family who
supported the Union in the Civil War.

In this census, George's age is 2 years less than his birth date would

tells us that George moved to California at some point. This genealogy
reports George's birth date as 1885, rather than 1884, as some public records
indicate. See the Draft registration and Death record below. In earlier
censuses his age is consistent with birth in 1886, and 1900 reports the birth
year as 1885, as the age in 1910 also indicates.

Notes for George Ross MULLINS

I originally had reported the birthplace of Elizabeth Mullins' father as
Georgia, before I had found a name, based on the census information from
Elizabeth's entry. The 1880 census gives place of birth of her father as
Georgia and of her mother as North Carolina. Entries for George in censuses
report his birthplace as South Carolina.

Ancestry World Tree sources report South Carolina also. Perhaps they have
followed the censuses or they may have other information. No source
information is included. Because the other details are so complete, these
trees seem generally reliable.

I am reporting York District, South Carolina, as birthplace of George Ross
Mullins. The census reports of age-birth year vary, as do those reported by
genealogies. It seems the closest to match an average of all the censuses is
1921, reported by the 1860 census. This census shows his birthplace as North
Carolina, which seems to be an error, as most sources, including other
censuses show birthplace as South Carolina, which I am showing in this
genealogy.

In 1850 George and Elvira are in Cherokee County, Georgia.

In 1860 George Ross and Elvira have moved from Cherokee County, Alabama, to
Pickens County, Georgia, the two older girls are off on their own and the two
boys are still in the home.

They are living next door to Samuel and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Tatum. George
Ross' two brothers James and Green live just a few doors down and are recorded
on the same page of the 1860 census.

One researcher comments: "He was on the Muster Roll of Pickens County Militia
as of March 4, 1862. However, rumor has it that he actually fought for the
Union."

A great-great grandson, Mike Taylor, has also found this in documents. "Did
you known that George Ross Mullins fought for the north? He, two brothers and
one son (Martin) were members of a guerrilla unit in north Georgia fighting
the Georgia Home Guard. In January 1865 they joined the 1st Georgia Infantry
(USA) and spent the rest of the war guarding the railroad between Atlanta and
Chattanooga, Tennessee. I'm sure they were able to see the glow in the sky
from the burning of Atlanta."

See the notes for George Ross' brother Green D Mullins, for more on their role
in the Civil War.

In 1870 we find George Ross and Mary Elvira enumerated in the Truckwheel
District of Pickens County, Georgia.

George Ross and Elvira moved with Sanford Giffin and his family to Texas about

Oklahoma Territory had been established at this time but it was farther west.
It appears that all my ancestors on all sides in that era were living in
Chickasaw Nation at that time. Many were in the Marlow area, later Stephens
County. The Tatums, Mullinaxes and Mullins settled in the Ada area, later
Pontotoc County.

Mike Taylor reports on the details he found in George's and his wife's
applications for Civil War pension benefits. He finds that George first
applied for veteran benefits on 9 April 1892, application number 1113702,
certificate number 883947, and filed from Indian Territory.

George's wife filed under the name Mary Elvira (some sources have Elvira Mary,
which I have used in this genealogy). She applied for widow benefits on 23
January 1897, application number 648005 (no certificate number). The attorney
of record for Elvira's application was P O Farrell. These documents provided
the date of death of George.

I found some of the names in your family tree listed in an old Bible in my
possession. The front page of the Bible shows that it belongs to Fannie
Mullins. The Marriage page in the middle of the Bible shows that Fannie Smith
married Ben R Mullins on January 21, 1906. Both are from Lula, Oklahoma.

My Grandpa Mullins is Fannie and Ben R Mullins oldest son. His name is George
Ross Mullins. The Bible shows that Fannie and Ben had 9 children; three of
the names match those on your family tree, Ben Junior "BJ," Sherman and Leon.
The Bible also provides birth dates of all children and marriage dates of 6 of
the children.

Mike Taylor reports that he has found documents indicating that Green D
Mullins joined his two brothers James P and George Ross, as well as one of
George's sons, Martin B, to fight for the Union in the Civil War. Many North
Georgians chose the northern side in the US Civil War. These Mullins
Unionists were listed in the roster for Col James G Brown's 1st Georgia State

brother William F Mullins, was a Captain in the 43rd Georgia Infantry of the
Confederacy.

In 1870, we find Green and his family still in Pickens County, Georgia. Their
Post Office is reported as Jasper. Here Green's wife is Jane, age 30, thus
born about 1840. Jane would be Green's 2nd wife. It is thought that
Elizabeth Caldwell Green, mother of Green's children in these two censuses,
died in or before 1868. But Elizabeth's son Brantley doe sin t include the

proper middle name Adolphus.
-- Charlotte Linn Claborn, RootsWeb Message to Orville B Jenkins

Some have questioned Charlotte's aassertion, and feel the records indicate the
actual name was Dolphus. His grave has his name as Green D Mullins, as do
some censues..

The two forms of Green's second son's name seem to indicate that he is
Christopher Columbus Mullins, which is reported by some sources. The
birthplace of Green is now reported as South Carolina instead of Georgia as in
1860. The age of Elias in these two censuses does not match, as often we
find. Two additional children were born (at least that survived) after the
1860 census and before Elizabeth died. Reports estimate that Elizabeth died
before 1868. But I have thought it likely that Jerrome is also Elizabeth's
son. Details of her death are vague. Perhaps she died in childbirth with
Jerrome. On the other hand, since Jerrome's name is not in the list of
brothers that Brantley records, he could be Jane's son.

Note that Pearson's middle initial in the census is J. Charlotte Claborn
reports that family sources indicate it was B, and further, his brother
Brantley reported that his name was McPierson, rather than Pearson.

"Doctor Brantley Mullen in his eastern Cherokee application stated his
brothers names were: Christopher Columbus Mullins, Elias Mullow Mullins,
McPierson B. Mullins, and that he had no sisters."

Based largely on this record, I am considering that Jerrome is the son of
Green and his second wife Jane. Going by his age in the 1870 census and the
resulting estimated birth year, this would also mean that Elizabeth died
before 1862.
