Martin's age in the 1850 and 1860 census make it appear that he was born in
1846 rather than 1847 as family sources report. He is 4 and 14 respectively,
rather than 3 and 13, which would match birth in May 1847.

Martin Burton, along with his father and two uncles, fought for the Union in
the Civil War. For more on their role in the Civil War, see the notes for
Martin's uncle Green D Mullins and his father George Ross.

In 1870, Martin B Mullins is head of his household on a farm, age 23, with
wife Haley Ann, and children Carr B, age 3, and Emma J, age 1. Brother Giffin
Mullins, at age 25, is a Farm Laborer;

Parents' birth places are not reported in this census.

William Corbin, age 7, is also "Assisting on Farm." This is the same as the
child reported in other sources with the name Yearby Corbin. It seems likely
his full name was William Yearby Corbin. Otherwise it is likely that the
unusual name Yearby was his given name and he was called William as a
nickname. William Corbin is a son of Thalia, not a Mullins. Name is written
as "Corbin, William," as though Corbin is the last name. Other genealogies
had taken his last name to be Mullins. Thaly was married at about age 15,
just as her husband was going off to fight in the Civil War. He died in
action, apparently never seeing his son.

They live next door to Sarah West and children, when Augustus is 17. The
Wests live in House #505 for this census, and a couple of houses down in house
#503 are Sam and Nancy Tatum and family.

The picture of relationships is not clear here. George and Addie are both
reported to be in their first marriage, but Josie is 8 years old, and Addie
would have been only 8 years old when Josie was born. George is 9 years older
than Addie. One would think that Josie's mother was an earlier wife who has
died. But if Josie is George's daughter, this should be his 2nd marriage.
Perhaps Addie is the child of a different son. Or perhaps the enumerator
meant to report that Josie was 8 months old, not 8 years.

Martin is buried next to his wife Thalia Anne in the Wanetta Cemtery, Wanetta,
in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma.

Notes for Nancy Elizabeth MULLINS

Different sources enable us to put together the full name of Nancy Elizabeth
(Lizzie) Mullins.

The oral history from the Green family knew her only as Lizzie. This is an
obvious familiar form of Elizabeth, the name reported in the 1880 census.

In most censuses she is refered to as Elizabeth. In the 1860 census, Samuel
and Elizabeth Tatum are living in Pickens County, Georgia.

The difference in age and thus birth year here originally made me wonder if
Mack P Mullins is really the same person as Pearson Mullins, son of Green D
Mullins. But the additional information about the form of his name Mc Pierson
leads me to think we should, as often necessary, ignore the census ages. The
1870 entry could have been a simple handwritten error, writing only the 9 of
19. I can't account for the J/Jef or the B reported by his brother Brantley.

Piott P Mullins, reported as a daughter in the 1880 census as born in 1878, is

her in the census (July 2007).

Notes for Sanford Giffin MULLINS

This person was first known to me under the name of Gif Mullins. This was in
the family information from Loretta Gregory Gay, which she had collected from
our Green family on the Tatum and West sides of our family. The earliest
public report I have found of Sanford Giffin Mullins is the 1850 census, where
he is listed by the name Sanford. I first found the full name Giffin in the
1870 census, where he is working on the farm of his brother Martin Burton
Mullins. Other sources, including some censuses, provided the name Sanford.

A couple of genealogies erroneously list him as Griffin. Dorothy Mulinix
lists him as Sanford Griffin Mullins. Dorothy probably got the name from the
1860 census, which does report him as Griffin. We know, however, from family
and public sources, that is incorrect. She also reports his birth one year
later than other sources I have followed, as 24 September 1845.
-- http://www.gencircles.com/users/annmull/1/data/4942

Glenda Moore also has the year as 1845. --
http://www.geocities.com/gr8kat1/mullins.html

Mike Taylor also has the year as 1845 on Giff's FAG memorial

His marriage record reports his birth as 24 September 1844. In the 1850
census, Gif is listed under his first name Sanford, which is spelled Sandford.

The Ancestry World Tree information cited here for some facts on Giffin
matches our family information, and provides many more details. This has the
name Sanford Giffin Mullins. The Mullins Genealogy I found online in June 2007
had some more details I incorporated, as shown in the source notes. The
anonymous Ancestry World Tree source misspells his name as Griffin, but
otherwise it provides excellent detail and a list of all the children. The
marriage registry entry of their marriage has Giffin as Giffen. All the
family sources spell it Giffin, or have the nickname Gif or Giff.

The family moved to Texas before the 1880 census. From the birth years of the
children, it appears they moved to Bosque County, Texas, in about 1876. In
the 1880 census, we find Sanford Giffin and Tripann, with Gif's parents George
Ross and Elvira in the same household. 6 houses away, we find Tripann's
father, Benjamin West, living in the household with Tripann's sister Elmina
Bradley shown as the head of the home, and one of Elmina's son's John.

The AWT source reports Sanford's death date as 2 Feb 1907, without a location.
The Mullins Genealogy had the death place as near Lula, Indian Territory
(later Pontotoc County, Oklahoma). This matches other information on the
family's location. Other Mullinses are buried in Lula Cemetery. The Mullins
Genealogy I found later has a date of 2 Apr 1907. This information comes from
within the family in a genealogy by a descendant, including information from a
great-grandson of Gif.

The Mullins Genealogy also has an exact death date, but it is a year later
than the other sources which give a year. The genealogy gives a date of 24
Sep 1845. In the 1870 census, taken in July, Gif's age is 25. If this age is
correct, he had to be born in 1844. His marriage license registration also
gives his birth year as 1844. With this information I have reported the exact
birth date of 24 September, but the year of 1844.

Mike Taylor has summarized Giff's family and included a biography on his
memorial on Find a Grave.

Sanford Giffin "Giff" Mullins

Death Apr 2, 1907 Lula, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, USA

Family tradition is that Sanford was buried here as per his Granddaughter
Rhoda Ardina (Stephenson) Liles who attended the funeral and related this
event to me. No marker has ever been found but descendants may have added a
civil war memorial to the cemetery in his honor.

Sanford was wounded in the Civil War in 1862 and died from the wound 45 years
and 7 children later. He was shot in the chest and the wound drained for the
rest of his life causing his death from infection after a doctor attended the
wound at his home near Lula. Ardina Liles remembered Sanford changing the
dressing every day when she was a child.

No photograph of Sanford is known to exist.

The 1900 census reports the wife of Seaborn J Mullins as Margarette, age 62.
This matches the age for Sarah in earlier records. At least one genealogy
reports that Seaborn married a Magarite Bailey in 1866. Bo marriage record is
attached. The census reports they had been married 34 years, which matches
that report. His record of marriage with Sarah Ann Bailey, however, is dated
in 1854. This would indicate a second marriage.

The death certificates of their son John Seborn Mullins and their daughter

Note that Julia's birth date is reported as 18 June 1865, but Seaborn's
marriage to Margaret was in 1866. Sometimes the year of birth is one or more
years off. We do not have the specific date of their marriage. But at any
rate, if she was the daughter of Margaret Jackson, she would have been born in
late 1866 at the very earliest. It may be she was the last child of Sarah Ann
Bailey Mullins. Margaret woiuld have been the only mother she would have
known. No Julia appears in the 1870 or 1880 census.

In the 1880 census, the oldest child in the household is reported as Alvenia.
But she matches by age the person named in her death certificate above as
Julia. The M initial in Julia's name is probably for Mullins, her maiden
name, so her middle name could have been something like Alvenia. The similar
name Luvena is found in the Mullins family line also.

But the name in the 1870 census is Averina P, Though the name discrepancy has
not been accounted for, it must be the same child, due to the consistency of
her age. Rounded off from census age in 1870 and 1880, it would be about
1966, and likely in 1865. Ages were not very specifically tracked in those
days. If correctly reported. It would appear that Averina/Alvenia was the
daughter of Sarah Ann Bailey. Julia may be the same child, due to the direct
match of details other than the name on her death certificate. If they are
two different chidlren, then where was Julia in 1870 nad 1880?

Notes for Sherman MULLINS

--------------------
I found some of the names in your family tree listed in an old Bible in my
possession. The front page of the Bible shows that it belongs to Fannie
Mullins. The Marriage page in the middle of the Bible shows that Fannie Smith
married Ben R Mullins on January 21, 1906. Both are from Lula, Oklahoma.

My Grandpa Mullins is Fannie and Ben R Mullins oldest son. His name is George
Ross Mullins. The Bible shows that Fannie and Ben had 9 children; three of
the names match those on your family tree, Ben Junior "BJ," Sherman and Leon.
The Bible also provides birth dates of all children and marriage dates of 6 of
the children.

I told my dad, David Mullins, about the Bible in my possession and your family
tree.

Notes for Sudie Bell MULLINS

The first reference I found on Sudie Mullins was in Mike Taylor's extensive
database of Mullins and Mullinax. Mike lists her as Sudie Tripp and reports
her birth date as abt 1892. Finally in February 2010, I found Sudie's Social
Security Death Index entry. The SS Death Index indicates they were in Oregon
at the time of Sudie's death.

Social Security Death Index
Sudie Mullins
Born 14 Jul 1892, Died Sep 1973
Last Residence Roseburg, Douglas, Oregon 97470
SSN 526-20-8052 issued Arizona (Before 1951)

Certificate 73-15826
Mullins, Sudie B
Birth Date Jul 1892
Spouse Willia[m]
Death 25 Sep 1973 Douglas County
Age 81

The Oregon Death Record provides the middle initial. This matches Sudie's
listing in one genealogy listed below, found after I had found the SSDI and
Oregon records.

The Mullins-Gassaway-Jones tree reports an unnamed Tripp woman married an
unnamed Mullins man who matches William Lucky's birth and death dates from
other sources. Her birth date of 1892 matches that given by Mike Taylor for
Sudie Tripp. This genealogy reports that this Tripp woman died in 1920. But
from what I have found out about Sudie B Mullins, this would be the first
wife, perhaps the Emma Tripp mentioned in Glenda Moore's work, since Sudie
continued living until 1973, after William Lucky died. This Tripp woman,
then, appears to be the first wife of William Lucky Mullins, probably named
Emma Tripp.

The Mullins Family Tree by Gilda reports full details about a Sudie B Mullins,
the daughter of James Christopher Mullins and Dora Lea Taylor. This genealogy
also provides further details about our William Lucky Mullins, including the
place of death. This Sudie Mullins has the maiden name of Mullins, not Tripp.
This marriage date matches the date Mike Taylor reports for William's marriage
to the wife Mike reports as Sudie Tripp. Mike also reports a Sudie B Mullins,
but has no details and no parents.

Gilda reports no marriage date for William and Sudie.

The Tripp maiden name for Sudie in some family trees appears to be a confusion
with Emma Tripp, his first wife. The detail in this genealogy seems to make
sense of the disparate and scattered details in other sources and fill in the
gaps consistently. Thus it appears that Emma Tripp was William's first wife,
after which he married Sudie Bell Mullins.

Sudie appears in the census with her parents in 1910, at age 17.
