Ellen was born in Alabama, whereas Mary Ann Carter was born in Tennessee.. Three new children, also named Winter in this census, appear in the household. The oldest is Susan, age 23, older than Stephen's daughter Elizabeth (Nancy). Susan and the two youngest, Bell and Amelia F, are Ellen's children from a previous marriage to Granville Fitzpatrick. No information has been found on Stephen's adoption of these three Fitzpatrick children. The enumerator may just have given them their steprfather's name without further enquiry. The 1880 census indeed confirms that Lucy Belle is Stephen's stepdaughter. He said this cemetery is in really bad shape, overgrown with trees, bushes, etc, the worst he had seen. The trees are pushing over what stones are there. There are quite of few graves there, a lot of them only marked with sandstone rocks that have sunken to the point they are getting hard to see. [The land this cemetery is on is now owned by Jerry Perry.] The cemetery is located 1 mile north of Dexter on County Road 100. You take County Road 103 in Dexter to County Road 100 and go east 8/10ths of a mile back east and it's way off the road on the left and not very visible because it's in a grove of trees. "Essie (Christian) Walkup is reported as believing that Nell Jenkins married a Jim Winters (probably of Cass County, Texas), one of several brothers including Troy Winters." -- Harold Christian, "Jenkins Family History," http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf, p 3 No further information has been found on a Troy Winter/Winters. There is a Troy Winter who was born in 1870. He is buried in the Ashland cemetery, in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. This appears to be a memebr of the ame Winter clan that moved into Indian Territory from Cass County, Texas, along with Jenkins and Christian families at the end of the 19th century. The memorial for this Troy Winter on Find a Grave reports no parents. It is possible the Essie Christian confused the generational relationship of Troy Winter, whom she reported as a brother of Jim. ------------------------------- Troy Winter BIRTH 4 Jun 1870 DEATH 24 Dec 1938 (aged 68) BURIAL Ashland Cemetery, Ashland, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma Spouse Mary Francis Richardson Winter 1883-1956 Child Baby Boy Winter 1915-1915 Created by MillieBelle 11 Mar 2007 -- Find A Grave Memorial 18341327, https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/18341327/troy-winter ------------------------------- A Mary E Winter is buried in the same cemetery, who matches the Mary E Griffin reported by several genealogies as the wife of James G Winter. No burial for James is linked to this memorial for Mary or to the one for Troy. This Troy Winter is of an appropriate age to be the son of Mary E Winter, buried in this same cemetery. The only other Winters with memorials on Find a Grave in Ashland Cemtery is the wife and child of this Troy Winter. It appears this is the son of Daniel and Mary. One problem, howsver, is that the birth date reported on the grave for Troy Winter is 4 June 1870. The census was taken in July 1870 and reports no infant or other child named Troy for the parents James G and Mary WInter. The youngest child in the household is Melvey, age 1.

Jasper Wirt took the Oath of Fidelity in Prince George's Co MD (Maryland Records by Brumbaugh, Vol 1] -- Gerry Koller, http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gkoller&id=I0219&ftm=1
Gerry Koller reports the following information on Uriah Wirt: Uriah Wirt b abt 1697 in Switzerland d 13 Apr 1762 in Frederick Town MD Killed by Richard Crosby, abt 7 miles outside of Fredrick -- Ancestry World Tree, http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gkoller&id=I0218&ftm= Here is the news story of his death: "Wirt, Uriah; on Tues. last week [April 13], just after sunset, he, an elderly man of 65 years of age, and his son, were travelling from Virginia to Frederick Town in Fred. Co., when they were attacked by a highwayman, who mortally wounded the elder Wirt with a pistol." -- Maryland Gazette, 22 April, 1762 (electronic on Ancestry.com)
The Wirt family name continues as a given name in the descendant Lowrey and McSwain families in Arkansas. Kenneth McSwain, a cousin of my wife, Edith Marie McSwain, referred to his Aunt Octavia, genealogy and provided information on their ancestor William Wirt. "Aunt Octavia's genealogy work from many years back. I was able to link her work to the biography of William Wirt, by tracing the names of his relatives from the book. My wife and I made a trip about 5 years ago to Virginia, where I met the author, a newspaper editor in Orange VA, and interviewed him. We then traveled to Richmond to the Wirt home and I interviewed the old lawyer who owned it. He said the home had been featured on an episode of This Old House. We also visited The Mariner's Museum in Norfolk VA, and I was taken to their warehouse where they had a ship's figurehead of William Wirt stored. Many years back WW was known as a brilliant speaker and his work was memorized by school children of the day." -- Kenneth Writ McSwain, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 1 September 2008 "Ruth Lowrey McSwain ... was a descendant of ... [Barbara Wirt, a cousin of] William Wirt ..., who was our longest serving Attorney General of the US at 12 years. He was appointed by Madison and Adams, and was an advisor to Thomas Jefferson and the defender of Aaron Burr. He was a well known orator of his day (Adopted Son, Life, Wit and Wisdom of William Wirt by Gregory K. Glassner, whom I visited and interviewed, a newspaper editor in Orange and Madison, Virginia). Wirt was also the author of The Biography of Patrick Henry, which he wrote some 50 years after Henry's death, and most of whose actual speeches were not recorded, but Wirt compiled the speeches from eye witnesses who had heard them. It is widely assumed that Wirt is responsible for many of the well turned phrases attributed to Patrick Henry. -- Kenneth Writ McSwain, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 17 April 2008 "Married - On Tuesday last, the Honorable William Wirt, Esq., Judge of the High Court of Chancery, for Williamsburg District, to Miss Elizabeth Washington Gamble, daughter of Col. Robert Gamble, of this city, merchant." -- The Virginia Gazette, and General Advertiser, Saturday, September 11, 1802, page 3, column 5; info courtesy of E Middleton, RootsWeb comment on this genealogy, 8 April 2017 "Feb. 17: â1 am sorry lo hear that the Hon William Wirt now lies at the point ot death at his lodgings in this city [Dateline Washington?]. Died, about meridian, yesterday [18 Feb 1834[, in Washington, William Wirt, Esq. aged about 62 years. At the adjournment of the House on Wednesday, I did not know what the arrangements were, or would be, for that mournlul ceremony." -- Gettysburg Republican Banner, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 4 Mar 1834, via NewspaperArchive.com There was a saga about William Wirt's tomb being robbed, and the mystery of his skull, being lost, then being handed over 175 years later to the Smithsonian Institution. ---------------- Tale From the Crypt When the stone was pulled off the tomb, Douglas Owsley peered down into the burial vault. He could see rotted coffins that had been dragged off a shelf and bones strewn around the floor. Meanwhile, the skull has been resting since July [2005] in the Owsley's lair at the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History. -- Washington Post, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/19/AR2005101902374.html ----------------
