All the children enumerated in the 1880 census are out of the home now. The
oldest, C W, was Charles Winston. I found a lot of family detail in the
Criswell/Robbins genealogy, but they do not have Andy's first wife, SJ, listed
in the 1880 census. Instead they show Annie Watson as the mother of all the
children.

Andy's wife in 1880 is listed only as S J West. Her birth year is similar,
but the birth places of the wife and her parents ae all different in the
listings for SJ and for Annie Watson West in 1900. Her full identity is given
to us in a publication of the Grand Prairie Historical Society, April 1991, pp
44-45. She was Sara Jane Hallett.

Grand Prairie Historical Society, April 1991, pp 44-45
"Gentry West said ther family legend is that his grandfather, Andy S West, got
out of service at the end of the Civil War and never returned to North
Carolina and soon married Sara Jane hallett of Tennessee somewhere near
Nashville. We find Andrew S. (A.S.) West and Sara West in the 1880 Arkansass
County Census but not the 1870 census. If the Arkansas Census is correct,
Andy's first child, Charles W., was born in Arkansas on December 15, 1873, so
it would appear that Andy came to Arkansas between 1870 and 1873. Arkansas
County land records show Andrew Simpson West bought a tract of land in 1873
from J. T. Jones." (p 44)

Her name on her gravestone is Tenney C. There is no reference to the name
Belle, and I have seen nothing else to indicate what this C might stand for.
When this name Tenney C is read, you can hear that the letter C is the
spelling of the last part of Tennessee. Tennie was a nickname, of course, for
Tennessee. When said together Tennie-C makes the name Tennessee.

The genealogist providing this photo, T A Maffit, reports that the grave is in
the St Charles Cemetery. However, Find a Grave reports that they are buried
in Chute Cemetery, which is several miles south of St Charles, and east of
DeWitt. FaG gives the location of Chute Cemetery as DeWitt, but it is several
miles east of DeWitt, south of Ethel.

Note that the daughter Tipann is reported as Male. The child Ferdinand, age 6
in 1850, does not appear in the household in 1860.

In 1860, I find the family in Pickens County, with a Post Office of Jasper,
but the location is Dug Road District. In notice that in the 1860 and 1870
census, one daughter's name is spelled as Francis, while in the 1850 census I
found it spelled in the expected manner for a girl. A woman's name is
normally spelled Frances. The child reported here as Columbus matches the
child named Ferdinand in 1850.

In 1870, the family still have a Jasper P O address in Pickens County, but
their location is not given on this page. We find that Benjamin West is a
widower. I do not have a date of death for Elizabeth.

Benjamin appears with no wife, so it appears that wife Elizabeth died before
1870. It appears also that Elmina is a widow with two children. I note that
the first daughter's name is spelled as a man's name. This is likely an
enumerator spelling error. We do find, however, that sometimes families
spelled a woman's name as Francis.

In the 1880 census, Tripann and her family with Sanford Giffin Mullins are in
Texas, along with his parents in the same household.

Notes for Charles Winston WEST

We first see Charley (Charles W) West in the 1880 census, as a child of 6 with
his family in Prairie Township, Arkansas County, Arkansas. Charley is the
oldest child, and he and all his siblings were born about 1874, after his
parents moved there, apparently from Tennessee. His father A S West is a
brother of Rufus Asberry West.

1880 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 9 June, Prairie Township,
District 2, page 10, Hse #84, Hse #87

C W [Charles] West W M 6 Son AR NC TN [b abt 1874]
M M West W F 4 Dau AR NC TN
L B West W F 2 Dau AR NC TN

The initials of his father, A S, stand for Andrew Simpson West. His mother is
Sara Jane Hallett, Andy's first wife.

I notice that this 1920 census was earlier in the year than the 1880, and yet
Charley's age of 26 is yields the same birth year, 1874. Since the census is
dated February, this would make it seem he was either born in January 1874 or
some time during the previous 8 months in 1873.

Yet in 1930 he loses two years. In 1930, his age of 54, yields a birth year
of 1876 or perhaps 1875.

1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 10 April, Prairie Township,

West, Emma Daughter F W 14 TX AR AR
West, Clarence Son M W 12 TX AR AR
West, Josie Lee Dau F W 10 TX AR AR

Note that in this census, Maggie's place of birth is reported as Indiana, as
in the previous census. However, the birthplace of the mother of all the
children is reported instead as Arkansas! Also, Charley's parents once again
have the correct states of birth, father North Carolina and mother Tennessee,
as reported in 1880.

The older children, Jesse, Lavada and Homer are now out on their own. Emma,
Clarence and Josie have been born since the last census. Emma later marries
Oregon Knowlton Jr as his second wife. Josie married William E Padgett.

The Criswell/Robbins genealogy provides a lot of details from family sources,
otherwise undocumented.

I notice that for the first three entries the enumerator has designated the
place in 1935 as same house, but on subsequent entries he has written same
place. I don't know if there is any significance to this difference. Note
also that Opal is a son, not a daughter, and is married to Thelma.
