In 1850 John Stokes and his wife Mary Pinot are living in Desha County, Arkansas. 1850 Federal Census, Desha County, Arkansas, 1 November, Chester Township, page 140, Hse/Fam #268 John Stokes 30 M Farmer born Tennessee Mary Stokes 28 F born Arkansas John Dumond 4 M born Arkansas Elizabeth Dumond 2 F born Arkansas Next door to John and Mary are Pierre's sister Virginia and her husband Isaac Love. Not far away is Pierre's mother Felicity (Félicité) Dumond and Felicity's son Caliste. John's wife Mary died in 1859, according to one or two genealogies. And I have found no entry for her in the 1860 census. John and an infant daughter appears in the 1860 census Mortality Schedule, both reported to have died on pneumonia in April 1860. Mary may have died in childbirth with this child. I found that Mary's date of death is reported as 2 May 1859, while her daughter is reported to have been 7 monbthjs old at her death in April 1860. This would place the baby's birth in about August, 3 months after Mary's reported date of death. It appears to be the right John Stokes, and the child fits a s a child of John and Mary. the chidl may have been abotu 10 months instead of 7 as reported. John died not long before the 1860 census, of pneumonia. His 7-month old daughter also died at the same time of the same cause. Her name here appears to be the initials L A, female, age 7 months. 1860 Federal Census Federal Census Mortality Schedule, Desha, Arkansas, 17 June, Friendship, District 122 John W Stokes 37 W M Married b Tennessee Died April 1860, Cause of death Pneumonia [b abt 1823] [Unreadable First Name] Stokes 7mos W F b Ark Died April 1860, Cause of death Pneumonia [b abt Aug 1859]
