Notes for Elnorah Ethyl BARNETT

Nora's name appears with many different spellings in public documents and
family sources. We find Nora, Norah, Elnora, Elnorah, Ellnorah, and maybe
some other variations.

Nora was likely born in Stonewall County, Texas. Barnett researcher Barbara
Stevens reports on records showing her father Francis Marion moved from Hill
to Stonewall County in the 1880s. This also tells us that her mother did not
die until after 1891.

No entry has been found in the 1900 census for Norah and her father Francis
Marion Barnett. The 1910 census there tells us that Francis was a widow and
that Nora (Elnora Ethyl) was 19, meaning she was born about 1891. The
reported age of 29 in the 1920 census is consistent with this.

1910 Federal Census, Stonewall County, Texas, 2 May, Justice Precinct 5,

Barnett, Nora Dau F W 19 Single TX NC IL Farm Laborer

By 1920, Norah has married but is still living in her father's household with
her older unmarried sister Mollie Priscilla. We also find that in this
census, her father is reported as an invalid and no longer as a Farmer. Since
their first child is only 1 month old, Nora and her husband Robert Hudson have
probably been married less than one year.

Next door to this mixed family in 1920 is what appears to be Robert's father
and his second wife. The ages would fit for 24-year-old Robert to be the
oldest child of Bill L Hudson. The next child in Bill's household is
13-year-old Bill E. Of course, there may be other children already married
and not living nearby.

From the ages of Bill and his presumed son Robert in the house next door, Lara
is Bill's second wife. This pattern of relationships seems confirmed when we
find a 3-year old child, Olif (Olaf?) A as the next child after 9-year-old
Sadie M, who followed 13-year-old Bill E.

In 1930, we find that Robert and Nora have moved to Cochise County, Arizona,
near Douglas, where Robert and all the neighbors on this census page are
working at a lime quarry. Since their son Lamont was born in 1930, they moved
to Arizona in late 1922 or later.

Notes for Elvira Jane Esther BARNETT

Elvira had three given names. In the 1880 census she was reported as Elvira.
In the 1920 census she was reported as Elvira J, In City Directory entries she
is consistently listed as Elvira J E. In the 1940 census we learn her J name
was Jane when she is enumerated as Jane E Rhymer.

She is called Jane on her husband's death record. It is likely her third
given name is Esther, since she named one of her daughters Esther. This name
is not firmly documented for Elvira.

For some reason Elvira is not listed with her husband and children in the 1910

15 years old. Olif E s confirmed as Olaf as we surmised. In 1920 he is
listed under his middle name of Evert (probably meant to be Everett).

Notes for Ervin James Columbus BARNETT

Other family genealogies also give his full name as Ervin James Columbus
Barnett. On his mother's funeral information his name as informant is given
as J C Barnett. Directories (cited below) have his name as Ervin or Ervin J
Barnett.

Christopher Columbus Barnett

Ervin or J C was born in Antlers, Pushmataha District, Choctaw Nation. The
current Pushmataha County comprised the original Choctaw District of
Pushmataha, plus two other Districts, each of which were divided even further
into counties. The area had been Choctaw land since 1832. The town of
Antlers was established with a US post office in 1887, along the Frisco
Railroad. It was in Jack's Fork County of the Pushmataha District. This
became part of Pushmataha County, Oklahoma, with the establishment of the
State of Oklahoma in 1907.

In the 1910 census, Ervin, listed as James C, is in his grandparents' home.
HIs father died some time before the 1910 census. I do not have further
details on his mother for this period, but a genealogy reports that Alice
Miney Wilson Barnett died in 1978. His granddaughter indicates they know him
as James. Note that later some directory listings have his name as only Ervin
or Ervin J Barnett. (See below.)

They moved to Texas between August 1883 and February 1888. The 1900 census
tells us that their son Lonnie C Jackson was born in Alabama on August 1883.
Their last child Lillie B Jackson was born in February 1888 in Texas,
according tho the 1900 census in Hill County, Texas. There were other
Jacksons living in Hill County and other counties to the north and into Indian
Territory.

As of July 2015, no connection has been evidenced between these two lines of
Jacksons. There are also two separate lines of Barnetts associated the
Jackson and related Green both lines. Allk of these families are coonnected
to Hill County and Indian Territory. No connection has been discovered
between the Barnett-Jacksons of Alabama and the other two Barnetts of Texas
and Indian Territory.

Notes for Evaline BARNETT

Some genealogies have Evaline's name as Susan Evaline. I have not found any
record, documentation or statement of family source for the name Susan. The
first record I find for Evaline Barnett is the 1850 census.

Evaline's age in the 1850 and 1880 censuses are consistent, making her born in
1838. But her birthday from family sources is 20 November 1835. The 1895
Kansas State Census matches her actual birthday.

One Barnett researcher with whom I have worked on this family reports her name
as Lola. I note that her brother Frank (Francis) had a daughter who was
reported in the census as Lolo, possibly meant to be Lola. In 1900 Lula is
still in the household, but has recently married David Lundry.

Thanks to Barnett Researcher Nadene Snyder, who worked with me on much of this
Barnett line, and who had found many public records on the Barnett lineage.
Note that in these later censuses her name is spelled Eveline. This was also
the spelling on her marriage registration. Nadene lists Evaline as Susan
Evaline, but provides no record with that name. I have not found any record
documenting the first name of Susan. It may be a name known only in family
sources.

I have not learned if the name appears this way in a family Bible or other
family document. No one who has her name as Susan Evaline documents where
they got that name. Thus I have insufficient evidence for including Susan in
the name for Evaline.

In 1920 Evaline is living with her widowed daughter Lula Belle

I am puzzled by the name of her father reported here, Frank Barnett. Her

confusion of names.

Two versions of her obituary were published by two different publications.

Mrs. A. Dixon

The death of Mrs. A. Dixon occurred in Kinsley Saturday, November 9th, and
burial was in Brown’s Grove cemetery Sunday, November 10th. Mrs. Dixon lived
for many years southwest of Burdett and will be remembered by the older
settlers. At the time of her death she was past ninety-four years of age. For
the past several years Mrs. Dixon had made her home with her daughter, Mrs.
Lundry in Kinsley, and it was at her home that she died. She was buried by the
side of her husband, who died several years ago. Sympathy is extended to the
family.

Francis D Barnett
Marriage 9 Dec 1869 Alcorn County

Some Boren genealogies mention the idea that Francis was fullblooded Choctaw.
Some make reference to the mother of Minerva Boren, Francis Barnett, as of
Choctaw background. Francis' father was a European, so she is not full blood
of any Native American nation. Francis (Frances) is the granddaughter of
Minerva Taylor Owens Barnett and John B Barnett. Minerva Taylor Owens John B
Barnett was of Cherokee background, not Choctaw.

Perhaps the Boren family line has some Choctaw background, but we have no
indication that the Barnetts did. The Owens line mentions only Cherokee in
the records and referenced I have seen. Barnett family
researchers/descendants have worked together on the records and family
traditions reconstructing the story of Minerva Owens Barnett. Frances Barnett
could not have been a full-blood Choctaw. Her Native American heritage would
be Cherokee, but she could not be full blood, since her father was of European
extraction.

Minerva's husband John B Barnett filed affidavits asserting his children's
Cherokee heritage, but they were denied by the Dawes Commission. This denial
in itself tells us nothing definitive. But they were unable to present
sufficient evidence for the Dawes requirements for enrollment. Minerva Taylor
Owens Barnett died about 1903 in Ft Gibson, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.

Frances' mother is reported in the death certificate as Jane Womack, born in
Hill County, Texas. This is surprising, since her father's wife Nancy Jane
Gibson did not died until 1891. No other record reflects a second marriage
before 1874 when Frances Jane was born in Hill County. Nancy Jane died in
Stonewall County, Texas, where subsequent children were born to her and
Francis Marion Barnett, and France Jane is named after Nancy Jane. The
informant was Dee R Green, Frances' daughter, of Paducah, Texas. I have not
found out who Jane Womack was.

Notes for Francis Marion BARNETT

Francis is listed as Francis M in the 1850 census with his father and
step-mother in Monroe County, Tennessee. The 1880 census lists him as F M.
Various researchers in that discussion also refer to him as Frank, which we
would expect. I found his full name in a comment by Barbara Stevens on a
genealogy discussion list on Ancestry.com:
"Francis Marion Barnett b. 1840 son of Jorial Burnett [sic]." Though Barbara
gives his birth date here as 1840, census age consistently indicates he was
born in about 1841 or 1842.

In 1850 he is with his father, stepmother Nancy Powell Barnett and his
siblings, enumerated with the feminine spelling of his name, but listed as
Male.

In 1860 he is 19, and still in his father's household, with his second

and additionally he is reported as Female!

Frank and his brother William served in the Union army. William was killed in
action. Barbara Stevens, a descendant researching the Barnett line, reports
this along with some other helpful information about Frank:

"[Jorial's] sons Frank, William served in Civil War. William [was] mortally
wounded and died in Ashley, IL 1862. ... Francis Marion Barnett ... was in the
Union Army and settled in Double Mt., Stonewall [County in Texas] in the
1880s, moving from Hill Co., TX. He was there in 1890 (Union soldier census)
and 1900 too I believe."

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.stonewall/86.123.1.2.2/mb.ashx

A distant cousin and fellow Barnett researcher located a website with the
Civil War registration information for Francis Marion Barnett.

Francis M. "Frank" Barnett, a farmer from Nashville, Washington Co. IL stood
5' 10" tall with dark hair, hazel eyes and a dark complexion. He was born in
Murphy, Cherokee County, North Carolina. Served during the Civil War with the
Union Army, with Co. D, 48th Illinois Infantry Enlisted as a Recruit from
Ashley on February 15, 1862. Mustered in as a Private Re-enlisted as a
Veteran from Nashville on March 1, 1864 in Centralia, IL. Mustered in as a
Private April 21, 1864 in Scottsboro, Alabama. Promoted to Corporal Mustered
out on August 15, 1865 in Little Rock, Arkansas
-- Genealogy Trails, Washington County, IL. Veterans,
http://genealogytrails.com/ill/washington/vets_b.html

See the 1890 census Veteran's Schedule below for details of Francis Marion's
Civil War service. I found Frank in the 1920 census in Stonewall County, as
Barbara Stevens said. See the report later in these Notes.

While in Illinois, Frank married his stepsister Nancy Jane Gibson, daughter of
Sarah Morgan Gibson, the widow who married Jorile after he moved the family to
Illinois. By 1970, we find Frank and Nancy Jane in Hill County, Texas, a few
houses from his father and stepmother. They are enumerated on the page prior
to Jorile and Sarah. From the age of their oldest child, it appears that
Frank and Nancy Jane married about 1866.

1870 Federal Census, Hill County, Texas, 23 August, PO Hillsboro, page 38,
Hse/Fam #259
Barnet, Francis 25 M W Farmer $100 Real Estate born Alabama
Barnet, Nancy 23 F W born Illinois
Barnet, Sarah 3 F W born Illinois
Barnet, Maude 2 F W born Texas

The ages of their children are again helpful in determining when the Barnetts
moved from Illinois to Texas. The oldest daughter Sarah was born about 1867
In Illinois, while the second daughter Maude Bell was born about 1868. We
don't have the exact birth dates of these girls, and their births could be in
1866 and 1867, rather than 1867 and 1868. But the data we have means we will
be pretty close if we say they moved to Texas in about 1867. Their ages in
1880 are similar, which indicates they probably moved in late 1867 or early
1868.

I am a bit puzzled by the birth state for Francis here. He was born in North
Carolina, Cherokee County to be exact. We have good documentation of them in
that county and the neighbouring county of Monroe County, Tennessee. There
was another family of Barnetts in Alabama, so it appeared superficially that
this might have been one of that group. There are several Francis Marion
Barnetts in Texas at this itme, but I have not found representatives of the
two lines in the same places. The children, wife and ages matcfh the family
of Jorile/Jorial Barnett's son Francis Marion Barnett. So I cannot account
for the repotritng of birth in Alabama. This is the only place where this
occurs, as far as I know.

In 1880 Frank and Nancy Jane are living next door to his Jorile and Sarah.

Barnett, Fookie J [Frankie Jane] W F 5 Dau At Home TX NC IL

From the ages of the children, we can determine that Frank and Nancy moved
from Washington County, Illinois, to Hill County, Texas shortly after Sarah's
birth in about 1866 or 1867. They were in Texas by the birth of Maude Belle
in about 1868.

I have not yet (June 2008) found them in the 1870 census.

Barbara Stevens comments on his later years:
"He was in the Union Army and settled in Double Mt., Stonewall [County in
Texas] in the 1880s, moving from Hill Co., TX. He was there in 1890 (Union
soldier census) and 1900 too I believe."

From this and the documents that Barbara Stevens cites, it appeared that Frank
moved to Stonewall County, was enumerated there by the Union soldier census in
1890. I later found the reference Barbara reports on. This was the Veterans
Schedule of the 1890 census. Most of this census was destroyed in a fire.
This schedule records only the house number, name, rank and regiment, with
enlistment and discharge information for the veteran himself.

Census details located by Nadene Snyder indicate that another Frank M Barnett
was enumerated in Wood County, Texas, in 1910. I found that the 1910 census
information was for another Francis Marion Barnett, born in Alabama of Georgia
parents. That Francis Marion Barnett's wife was Martha This would be a
member of the Barnett lineage discussed above: VA-SC-TN/AL-TX. Some of them
were in Georgia and Tennessee before moving on to Texas. There are several
Francis Marion Barnetts in various parts of Texas!

I have not seen a 1900 entry for Frank and Nancy Jane. An anonymous genealogy
on Ancestry World Tree reports the death dates for Frank and Nancy.
Incidentally, this sources spells Frank's father's name as Jarial, a spelling
I have found in no other source. This source does not give a source for the
dates, but they seem reasonable:
Francis (Frank) Marion Barnett, b 21 Feb 1841 Cherokee Co NC, d 16 March 1925
in Stonewall County, Texas
Nancy Jane Gibson Barnett, b 02 Jan 1847 in Illinois, d 5 April 1891 in

In both the 1910 and 1920 censuses, I found Francis Marion as a widow living
with his daughters in Stonewall County. I the 1910 census he is listed as a
Farmer, but in 1920 he is an invalid, and no one in the household is reported
as working the farm.

By 1920 his daughter Nora (Elnora Ethyl) has married but is living in Francis'
household with her husband Robert C Hudson. None of the family members of
Robert is reported as working on the farm. I have not identified the other
couple in the household, Ervin J and Alma C Beauford. Ervin is reported as a
General Laborer, not a laborer on the farm, and is reported not in any
relationship to Francis as head of the household but another head of the
family. All three of these are reported in the same household, but all three
men are reported as "Head," and given no additional family number.

Hattie and Tazwell (Taz) were enumerated in Jackson, Tennessee, in the 1900

reports that three chidlren had been born and only 2 were living.

We know Mary Barnett Hackney was in Jackson, Tennessee, with her second
husband J D Hackney for the 1900 census and was in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1903
when she was listed in the city directory as a widow. She probably moved to
Oklahoma with her daughter's family. So I estimate they all moved to Oklahoma
between 1903 and 1907, probably about 1905.

Harriett was appointed Executrix of her husband's estate when he died in 1946.
Note that in the probate records the last daughter is named Louise. She was
probably named after Hattie's step-grandmother, Mary Louise Sledge.
