Notes for Edd Ragan CRISWELL

The 1900 census reports Edward with his parents and siblings in the northern
half of Prairie Township of Arkansas County, Arkansas.

Note that while the 1900 census erroneously reported both Edward's parents as
born in Alabama, in 1910 and 1920 his parents' own enumeration correctly
reports his father's birth in South Carolina. In 1900 and 1910 his mother was
correctly reported as born in Alabama. But in Edward's enumeration in 1920,
both his parents are reported as born in Mississippi as he was!

The entry for Edward and his own family in the 1920 census gives an age which
matches the birth date reported in the 1900 census.

I incidentally found it interesting that from the 5th of January 1920, when
William's household was enumerated, it took 4 days to get to Edward's house in
the same district, just a few houses down the road, and 2 pages later in the
census record, when Edward's family was listed on 9 January. January 5 was on
a Monday, and the 9th was on Friday.

Here we find that Edward and Ella have been married about 5 years and have
three children, John, Velma and Lena.

In 1930, we find that Ella has passed away since the last census. There is an
additional child, Mary F, age 8. This means that she was born in 1921 or
1922. So Ella passed away between 1921 and 1930. I have not yet (as of April
2008) found a Death Index entry for her. The child Ella matches the child
listed as Velma in 1920.

In 1930 at the time of the census, she and Alfonso (spelled Afonso in the
census) are living right on the White River. The census location states: "No
Road, on White River." Al and Harriett's reported age in the census is the
same age reported as their age at marriage. But notice that the age actually
reprote don the marriage record is different for Al. At the time of the
marriage, he reported his age as 21, but reported to the enumerator that he
was married at age 22.

Alfonso's occupation is reported as Shelling, mussels. Harriett's brother
Mack Criswell, who lives a few houses down, is reported as a digger of
mussels. A neighbor of Mack is also a mussel digger. Perhaps they worked
together, with the two digging and Al shelling, perhaps with a larger work
crew. There are several diggers on this page, but Al is the only sheller.

Next to Mack and his new wife Louie McSwain, is Alfonso's father Leonard, with
his daughter Loisa (Louisa?). Leonard makes his living as a fisherman.

Notes for Ida Myrtle CRISWELL

Myrtle appears in 1900 as the child of James and Allice Criswell. She is then
found in the 1920 census at age 25. She is not in the 1910 census with her
family.

Arkansas, County Marriages Index, 1837-1957
Myrtle Criswell, Age 25 (b abt 1895)
Residence Saint Charles, Arkansas, Arkansas
W T Jones, Age 45 (b abt 1845)
Residence Ethel, Arkansas, Arkansas
Marriage 26 Aug 1920 Arkansas County
Marriage License Date 26 Aug 1920

The 1930 census reports that Ida Myrtle was married to W T (William Thomas)
Jones. Myrtle is reported as age 35, and first married at age 25, indicating
that they married in 1920. This matches a report of William Thomas in the
1920 census, where he was reported as a widower. The census date in 1920 was
1 January, although William's household was enumerated on 10 February. So we
can determine that William Thomas married Ida Myrtle Criswell after 1 January
1920, and probably after February 1920, (For more information, see Notes for
William Thomas Jones.)

Ida Myrtle Criswell was the daughter of James B Criswell (Oct 1870-after 1940)
and Alice Ray (Oct 1876-before Oct 1906). On 26 August 1920 in Arkansas
County, Arkansas, Myrtle married William Thomas "Willie" Jones, who was
enumerated in the 1940 census as Tom Jones. They were living at that time in
the Ethel, Arkansas, area on Oak Flat School and Church Rd

They had four children:
Nixie Jones, b abt 1921, d before 1930
Clara Leona Jones, b 12 Jun 1922, d 24 Apr 2003
Herman Jones, b 29 Apr 1925, d 03 Apr 2012
Sevella K Jones, b 21 Oct 1934, d 08 Jul 2014

Myrtle was buried in Mt Pleasant Cemetery south of Ethel, Arkansas. Her
husband Willie was buried in the Jones Family Cemetery nearby a little north
of Ethel.

Notes for James B CRISWELL

For a long time the earliest information I could find about James Criswell and
family was the 1900 census. I found the 1880 census only in February 2010.
In 1880 we find James with his parents and siblings in Attala County,
Mississippi, where the children were born.

In 1900 James and his family are living next door to Phillip K McSwain, and
some of the Padgetts. His brother Harvey is boarding with the McSwains.
Before the next census, Harvey will marry Phillip's niece, Callie McSwain,
daughter of George B and Harriet.

Note that both James' parents are reported here as born in Alabama, but in

McSwain Holden. I cannot determine for sure if Alice has died or the couple
divorced.

The birth place of James' father has changed again. Now it is South Carolina.
Note that this is the second marriage for both, according to the enumerator.
This is the only census that indicates the how many time they have been
married. They have been married for 3 years, so they married about 1907.
Bryan R is 10 years old, so this is the son of James' first wife. She must
have died soon after Bryan's birth, because there are no other children, until
Noah, son of Janie.

Where is Myrtle? She should be about 15 in this census. Leona, about 12 at
this time, is also missing. This might indicate that the parents were
divorced, and the girls are living with their mother. Their son Bryan, who
appears to be the same child as Robert in 1900, is in this household with his
father. I have not found a separate household with Allice (Alice) and the two
girls. Perhaps these girls are living with family members. Myrtle comes back
into the household, and is still single at the time of the 1920 census.

The last two children in the household confirm that this is the second
marriage for Janie. Ancestry.com has transcribed Janie's son Wattie as
Mattie. A descendant of Caldonia also tells me that her brother's name was
Mattie. The entry for Mattie is a bit puzzling. The enumerator first wrote
for the relationship "Step-daughter" then partially erased it, then wrote over
it the word "Son." But Mattie would be a step-son of James, a brother to
Caldonia. This child, who would be 16 in the 1920 census, is not enumerated
with this family in 1920.

I learned from other genealogies that Jane was previously married to William
Holden. The Caldonia here matches information on the Holden genealogy of
Jerry Griffitt. Jerry details the Criswell and Holden family connections in
Arkansas County. Here is his configuration of the Holden family of Jane, whom
he reports as Jane R.

William H Holden
Birth Nov 1859 in Mississippi
Death BET 1903 AND 1907 in Prarie, Arkansas Co., Arkansas
Marriage 1895 Prarie, Arkansas, Arkansas, to Jane R Mar 1878

Caldonia Holden, Birth 22 Jan 1901 in Prarie, Arkansas, Arkansas, Death 11
March 1995 in Dallas, Polk, Oregon
Mattie Holden b 1904 in Arkansas
-- Holden Family, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10407308/person/-645503526

Griffitt reports the male child I mentioned above as Mattie. Griffitt cites
the 1900 census, which seems to match the form of the name in the 1910 census
of the Criswell-Holden family above. If this listing is correct, perhaps this
is a nickname for the full name Matthew.

The name of James' wife in 1920 is Mattie, which matches the 1930 entry for
Martha J. I could not find the documentation for this third wife until August
2012, when the marriage record turned up in the ever-improving Ancestry.com
resources.

Note that Giriffitt reports that Janie Holden Criswell died in 1930, though he
does not have an exact date of death, and not source. The Holden genealogy
follows him on this. Neither has documentation, and I have found no details
related to Janie's death. Griffitt provides census information as a source,
so the unsourced information seems to be from family knowledge. Mattie in
1920, matching Martha of 1930 in age and name, would be this third wife,
Martha (Mattie) Connelly. Mattie is reported as James Criswell's wife in the
1920 census.

1920 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 9 February, Prairie Township,
Country Road, District 15, page 6A, Hse/Fam #109
Criswell, James Head M W 49 MS SC SC Farmer
Criswell, Mattie Wife F W 53 AR AR AR
Criswell, Myrtle Dau F W 25 AR MS AR Farm Laborer
Criswell, Robert Son M W 20 AR MS AR Farm Laborer
Criswell, Noah Son M W 11 AR MS AR

Now both James' parents are said to have been born in South Carolina. The
child Robert here matches the child Bryan R in 1910. We can conclude, then,
that his name was Bryan Robert. But I recall that in the 1900 census, there
was a Robert F. This complicates the matter. Both these names also have
middle initials: Bryan R and Robert F. Something is wrong somewhere. I find
Robert Criswell married in the 1930 census. He matches the other entries
here. It appears the entries for Bryan R and for Robert and Robert F are for
the same son.

25-year-old Myrtle should have been in the 1910 census. In 1920, Noah is
reported as a son, which we would expect from the name. But in 1910 the child
Noah D was reported as being a daughter!

I note that this census reports that James' parents were both born in South
Carolina. In 1910, his father was born in South Carolina, but his mother in
Alabama. The Simons Family Genealogy reporting on the Criswells gives the
birth of both of them at Attala County, Mississippi. This seems to be an
error based on the fact that the family lived in Attala County, Mississippi,
before moving to Arkansas.

The birthplace of parents is not very helpful, since this changes in every
census. 1910 Janie's parents were both reported to have been born in North
Carolina. But in 1920, Mattie's parents are both born in Arkansas. But we
see in the 1930 census below that they are both reported born in Tennessee!

Ages might be more definitive. James' age is constant, with 10 years
difference in each census. This is actually unusual. With this as a
constant, we can compare the difference in ages between James and his wife.
In 1910, Janie C is 7 years YOUNGER. In 1920, Mattie is 4 years OLDER. The
names make it seem that Mattie of 1920 and Martha J of 1930 are the same, and
we find that again there Martha J is 4 years OLDER.

The age information seems to push the weight of evidence slightly toward the
view that James was married a third time between 1910 and 1920, meaning Janie
seems to have died before census time in 1920, not 1930 (unless they were
divorced, for which we also lack records). I have found no corroborating
source on the death of Janie.

1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 22 April, Prairie Township,
Ethel & Chute Rd, District 7, page 7B, Hse #127 Fam #128
Criswell, James B Head M W 59 MS SC USA Farmer
Criswell, Martha J Wife F W 63 AR TN TN
Nixie M Granddaughter F W 14 AR AR AR Farm Laborer

Here the birth place of James' father remains the same, but now no state is
reported for his mother. Note that in 1930 the birth date for Martha's
parents has changed from Arkansas to Tennessee. The designation of
relationship for Nixie is scrawly and uncertain, but at age 14, she is most
likely their granddaughter. I do not know, however, which of their sons is
her father.

In about 1844, James and Mary moved to Attala County, Mississippi. They were
enumerated there in 1850 with 7 chidlren. The last two were born in
Mississippi.

J Henry Cane [Criswell] 14 M Mississippi
Mary A Cane [Criswell] 12 F Mississippi
Young R Cane [Criswell] 8 M Mississippi
Sarah E A Cane [Criswell] 5 F Mississippi

The writing of the latter surname, entered only on Martha J Cane, is unclear
after Ca. This appears to be the Cane/Cain family, probably nieces and
nephews of Mary Jane Cane Criswell, the wife in this family listing. Martha
Jane at age 25 would have been born in about 1835. This matches James and
Mary's own daughter Martha Criswell. It looks like the enuemrator just
decided to name all the children Cane. William H is also their son, reported
as age 10 in the 1850 census.

I found the Simons genealogy has this list of names as children of James and
Mary. If that genealogy is correct, the last name of these children would be
Criswell. I cannot understand how the notation that appears to be a different
last name could have intended to mean Criswell. William H Ca-- here seems to
match William H Criswell, son of James and Marry Criswell, who is reported
variously as born in 1840 or 1842. J Henry and Mary A also match the last two
Criwell children reproted in the 1850 census.

If Cane is the intended last name of the last two children, these Cane family
individuals are probably the children of a brother of Mary Jane. But th error
in naming the first four chidlren makes us think the last two, Young R and
Sarah EA are likewose Criswell children. In fact the 1880 census below
reports a 25-year-old daughter named Sarah.

There are three houses of Criswells side by side that are reported as related
to James Criswell as head of household. But the relationships reported are
not clear in some cases. James has no wife reported here, so he is a widower.
Daughter Sarah is 25 years old here. The next person is Charley, only age 4,
but reported as a son. If Charley is really James' son that means that he
would have been born when James was about 61. This is quite possible.

But his wife Mary was older than he was, and would have been about 66. This
is impossible. Charley cannot be the son of Mary. So it would appear that
Charley here is a grandson. But it is not clear who his parents are. In this
listing order, he would most likely be the son of Sarah, but then why is their
last name Criswell, instead of Sarah's married name? If Sarah is correctly
reported here as the daughter of James, who is Charley's mother?

In this enumeration, Margaret and her children are allotted a separate house
and family number, yet are reported relationally to her father living next
door. The same happens with the Herman family. Note that the birth state of
Martha's mother is reported as Mississippi as for Sarah, but her father's
birthplace is also reported as Mississippi, whereas James' birth state is
South Carolina, which is affirmed in the record for Margaret, whose father is
reported as born in SC.

But Margaret's mother is also born in South Carolina, which matches the
reports for Martha Jane Cane. I have no information about a second wife for
James Henry Criswell, and Martha Criswell was born only 2 years after her
sister Margaret. This discrepancy in birth states is probably due to
enumerator error, probably copying the reports for several people above the
entry for Martha.

Note that Mary E is reported as a daughter of Jame Criswell, but her last name
is Herman. It looks like the enumerator put her relationship to her father,
William Herman, instead of her relationship to her grandfather, in contrast to
the relationship for all the other children.

The next house is that of William Criswell, son of James
Henry.
