According to cemetery names and dates, William and Polly Strange (Strang) had a son named Sylvanus, named after William's brother Sylvanus. In the Baptist Church Cemetery in Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York, there is a grave for Sylvanus A Strange, with only a death date of 20 Nov 1847, and the notation that he was 43 years old. Sylvanus' grave lies in a row with two children's graves, Silvanus H Strang and Mary Strang, all with the same style gravestones. His wife's grave is not in this cemetery. The stone for Silvanus H Strang has a birth date of Feb 28, 1842 and a death date of Feb 17, 1845. The child Mary lived about 13 years, born 8 June 1840, died 7 Feb 1853. Alice, who took some photos of these stones, says onsite it looks like 1847 for the date of death of Sylvanus A Strang. After we consulted on 7-8 April 2014, Alice updated her memorials as well as uploading some additional photos. Silvanus' sister Mary is buried next to him. She lived to be age 13. I have edited the information on the memorial posted by Jerry Ames to match the apparent reading and family relationships Alice has proposed, which seem to agree with the overall data and the information on the grave photos Alice posted on 8 April 2014. Alice has also posted a new memorial for Silvanus, in which she spells his name as his father's, Sylvanus H Strang. I have kept the spelilng on the gravestone in the edited memorial below. On Alice's memorial below, she has posted pohtos of the grave, including Silvanus' sister Mary next to his. ---------------------------- Silvanus H Strang Birth Feb. 28, 1842 Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York, USA Death Feb. 17, 1845 Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York, USA Parents: Sylvanus A Strang (1804 - 1847) Mary Strang (dates unknown, information from Alice on Find a Grave) Sibling Mary Strang (1840-1853) Inscription: Silvanus H. The gravestone for the child named Sylvanus A Strang has only a death date, saying "Died Nov 20, 1847 L. 13 yrs." No birth date is given on the stone. The engraving appears to mean "Lived 43 years." This would make birth about 1804. William and Polly Strang had a son named Sylvanus (the name of one of William's brother). According to Find a Grave researcher and photographer Alice, Sylvanus married someone named Mary, and they also had a son named Sylvanus (spelled Silvanus on the gravestone), with the middle initial H. But young Silvanus died at just a little over one year old. They also had a daughter named Mary who lived only into her teens. "Sylvanus A. Strang [Find a Grave memorial] #40675275 was married to a woman named Mary, and they had two children, Sylvanus H. Strang 1842-1845 and Mary Strang 1840-1853, 26857289. Sylvanus died in 1847 and the children both died young... the three of them are buried together in a short row and I've added photos of the row to the memorials." -- Alice, Find a Grave Message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 8 April 2014, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=mr&MRid=47363648 According to cemetery names and dates in the Baptist Church Cemetery in Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York, Silvanus H Strang has a birth date of Feb 28, 1842 and a death date of Feb 17, 1843. Mary Strang's stone says she was born 8 June 1840 and died 7 February 1853. There appeared to be some errors in earlier transcriptions in some of the Find a Grave memorials. I have conferred with Alice, who photographed the stones and had a good onsite interpretation of the hard-to-read dates in the stone engravings, with come possible confusion between 1s and 4s in the dates. Alice updated her memorial on 8 April 2014. I have added or edited soem of the information also to clarify the inscription and relationships that were automatically and incorrectly generated by Find a Grave. The genealogy where I originally found the wife and children of this William Strange listed his father as John W Strange but gives William's name and that of his children as Strang. The Le Strange and Strange family name does appear this way in various lines. I found only in 1914 that the gravestones for William and Polly and all their children has the surname spelled Strang. As I probed it appeared there was no direct relation between the Stillwater, New York, Strang family and the Strange line of Virginia and Tennessee. This appears to have happened due to a simplistic inclusion of information on the New York family with the Tennessee lineage by an early careless genealogist, which was then copied by so many others. This spelling of Strang is associated with a different family line that changed into Strange or Strong in various English descendant lines. The spelling Strang, related to the English word and family name Strong, occurs due to the migration of German-speaking families moving into the English-language stream. The pronunciation of the German word for strong -- which is a family name Strong is in English -- is Streng. This is pronounced very close to the English spelling of Strang. Some members of the family line Streng Anglicized their name as Strong, and some as Strang. Some of the latter became associated with the English name Strange, some of whom also spelled their name as Strang. The latter name came originally from Norman French and the family line of Le Strange (the foreigner). The name ultimately from Latin Extraneus, meaning "foreign." In recent decades, spellings of names for various family lines have become fairly standardized, to make record-keeping easier. This trend has also been enhanced by the dramatic rise in literacy since 1900. In some early genealogical collections, with very poor or no documentation, the children of William Strange of Jefferson County, Tennessee, was mixed with children of William Strang of Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York. The William Strang and family in the cemetery at Stillwater, New York, has thus been confused with the Strange line in Jefferson County, Tennessee, in many genealogies of the Tennessee family. Before many resources became available on line, one genealogy in the One World Tree reported what appears to be this same William Strange, with wife Polly West. That Polly West is born in 1816 in North Carolina. The place of death for William's father John W is Buncombe County, North Carolina. But all the family genealogies of the Strang line of Stillwater, New York, all have the wife as Polly West, excepting a couple that call her Polly Stewart or Mary Stewart. But I have found documentation of this Polly West reporting her birth in New York state. It remains unclear if the wife of William Strange of Tennessee was even named Polly West. As I gain documented info on William Strange's wife, I will add that. The relationship notes in the memorials on Find a Grave for the Strang family in Stillwater indicate that William Strang's parents were William Strang and Abigail Simmons Strang. Most genealogies have the wife of John W Strange of Tennessee, the father of William Strange, as Abigail Simmons. But I have documented Abigail Simmons in New York, and she fits as the wife of William Strang Sr in New York. Thus the wife of John W and his son both remain unknown. But the same wife's name is given as Polly West with the same birth and death information as the wife of William Strange, son of John Strange and no name for the wife in sources I have consulted. This indicates there are two families conflated here. I finally found the widow Polly (West) Strang with the youngest child Orren (spelled Orrin here). This census reports Polly born in New York. If this Polly West is not the correct wife, then we have little reason to think that William Strang of Stillwater New York is the same person as William Strange of Jefferson County, Tennessee. 1850 Federal Census, Saratoga County, New York, 29 August, Stillwater, Hse #279, Fam #307 Polly Strang 66 F $1755 Valuation Real Estate b New York [b abt 1784] Orrin Strang 32 M No Occup b New York Idiot [b abt 1818] Acky Pelts 53 M b New York [b abt 1797] -------------------------- William Strang Birth 1778, USA Death Oct. 31, 1838 New York Parents: William Strang (1752 - 1831) Abigail Simmons Strang (1751 - 1839) Spouse Polly West Strang (1781 - 1855) Children: Sylvanus A Strang (1804 - 1847) Christianna Strang Howland (1807 - 1898) Silvanus H Strang (1812 - 1843) Henry J Strang (1817 - 1845) Orren Strang (1819 - 1853) Abigail Strang Myers (1823 - 1908) [On memorials for the children, the last-born child Abigail is reported as a half-sibling, but no other spouse is reported in this cemetery for William Strange/Strang] Siblings: Silvanus Strang (1781 - 1858) David Strang (1785 - 1861) Elizabeth Strang Neilson (1792 - 1829) Burial Baptist Church Cemetery, Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York Maintained by Jerry Ames, Originally Created by Thomas Dunne Oct 26, 2007 -- Find A Grave Memorial #22466140, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=22466140 -------------------------- The graves in the Stillwater Cemeteries contain a large number of individuals surnamed Strang. It seems likely that some early confusion of the Tennessee Stranges and the New York Strangs occurred in early sources. Genealogies and some other sources report information on William Strang, father of William Strang in Stillwater, New York. His wife is usually reported as Abigail Simmons, also born in New York. In some genealogies this Abigail Simmons has been attached as the wife of a John W Strange in Virginia, whose children William Alexander and John moved farther south and west. William is reported in Jefferson County, Tennessee, which became a big Strange clan stronghold. Few and conflicting details are found in some sources on some of the Strange family and the Strangs, and many genealogies give no documentation so are impossible to verify or trust. The Tennessee-Georgia Strange lineage became entangled with the New York Strang line, which as far as I can determine, are unrelated. I was also misled in early days by some earlier sloppy and incomplete genealogy information. I did not pursue the New York connection, but recently returned to this family. Now that more resources and data are available, I am trying to sort out the Strang line separately, though disconnected from the rest of my genealogy. ------------------- William Strang Birth 1752 Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York Death Oct. 23, 1831 Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York William's mother was Hannah Clements Strang. Christ Church Parish, Virginia Records, 1653-1812 Alex. Strange Death Date 2 Nov 1725 Some genealogies have confused Alexander's children with the children of his son Alexander, Jr. I have tried to sort this out. Basically all the children with birth dates later than 1712 are the sons of Alexander Jr and his wife Sarah. Alexander and his family are associated with St Peter's Parish (Church of England/Episcopalian) for about 150 years. My cousin, Elisa J Strange-von Rice of Phoenix, Arizona, has some extensive interesting history from her investigation of the church's vestry information cited here (edited): -------------------- The Strange Family in Virginia -- Alexander and Descendants I have been curious since reading that the Strange Family -- Alexander Strange and descendants -- stayed in Virginia so long ( about a century and a half) and each of them seemed to be Christened or buried at New Kent County (formerly Bisland), St. Peters Parish (Episcopalian). I found the index to the Vestry records via a Google search and located Alexander Strange and family; more than thirty entries; mostly christenings & births & deaths. The deaths of Alexander and wife Anne are included. I found that the monetary system was all in pounds of tobacco; I saw a shilling mentioned only once. It seems that the congregation started in the late 1600's and they built the church 1701-1703. The minister was very proud it was a brick church; it is mentioned many times. It tells how many pounds of tobacco were bartered for its construction. They later added a steeple and accessed the members again for pounds of tobacco. Apparently the Episcopalians tell you how much your tithe is going to be; in this case so many pounds of tobacco. If it was not paid they reminded you it was due, and how delinquent. I then went back and pulled up all the vestry records and read them; what a history lesson in the Colonies! Martha Dandridge was a member of St. Peters Parish. She and George Washington were married in this very church in 1757. The Stranges were here 50 years before Martha and George. They sometimes refer to the church as the "Church of the First Lady." Another interesting fact: the De La Warr (became "Delaware") family came to Virginia from England. The oldest son of De La Warr became the first governor of Virginia and one of their other son's became the second governor of Virginia. Their Youngest son, Nathaniel, is in the vestry records as Colonel DeLaWarr. The DelaWarr wife & Mother was ELIZABETH STRANGE. The Stanley, DelaWarr, and a couple of other families of the Virginia Company were directly related to the Stranges. These were not farmers; it is evidenced by the excavations of the colony. There was no farm equipment whatsoever, and there were things like gold jewelry and other items ordinary working class people would not have possessed back in those days. In one place it even refers to one as "Lord Strange." In the Amos Strange writings it said he left his very large estate and the church of his forefathers in Virginia to move to South Carolina to marry the Irish lass Frances Bailey. Also in St Peter's vestry records it mentions a L'Estrange. Amos was supposed to be instrumental in the establishment of a church in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He is supposed to be buried in the Camp Meeting Grounds -- what was this church? I will be trying to find these records. Since Amos was in the Revolutionary War was he acquainted with the de la Warr ( Strange ) and the Colonel Nathaniel De La Warr and George Washington? -- Elisa J Strange-von Rice, "STRANGE" AND DERIVATIVES, USA, http://www.yourtotalevent.com/people/STRANGE%20in%20USA.htm, 26 April 2007 (a cited link in this source is no longer available) -------------------- Alexander's Father There seems to be some uncertainty whether the father of Alexander Strange was a John Strange from Devon, reported by some as John Henry Strange of Devon, whose name is reflected in Alexander's son Henry Strnage. Others have reported a London connection, from Hunstanton, but this also is disputed. The late John Mayer, cited by several sources, wrote a huge compendium of several volumes on the various Strange and related lines in all countries. He has said there is no primary source information supporting the commonly reported parentage of Alexander Strange (born Bideford, Devon, and Died New Kent County, Virginia) as John Strange and Phoebe Chandler Mitchell. John Mayer suggests that the Devon Stranges (Le Stranges) descended from an Irish line that had earlier developed from the Hunstanton line. Such a connection has not been established. Even if this is the case, the longer-term connection is still there. The Irish Stranges came from the Hunstanton-Shropshire line. The Family Data Collection had a middle name for Alexander and his father, but it was the same as their last name: John Strange Strange, Alexander Strange Strange. It is not clear if this was intentional, but it appears to be. This makes me wonder if the S in son Henry's name is also for Strange. I have known families where this was the case. Alexander's Wives Most genealogies indicate that Alexander was married twice, but give no name. In September 2007, I found three genealogies showing a wife named Sarah (no last name) married in 1712. This appears to be the wife of Alexander Strange, Jr. I still have seen no firm evidence that Alexander had two wives. I will show only one wife, until I have found additional information indicating otherwise. One genealogy by Dixie Oakley has only one wife. Since I have seen no information, explanation or documentation, I am reporting Alexander as having only one wife until I can find documentation justifying another marriage. I find it frustrating that most people are not careful to tell how they find their data. You don't know where they get their material, or how they know what they report. Thus there is little by which to judge the validity or credibility of the data in many cases. Further, Ancestry.com originally collected submitted trees into an anonymous collection of the One World Tree, which many have used uncritically. These usually have/had no sourcing information Dates vary on the marriages, but several genealogies that report two wives date the first marriage to the nameless wife about 1684. They date the marriage to the second wife, Ann (Sammis), about 1690. One of the first sources I was analyzing early had two wives, with 4 children of the second wife. However, the fourth child, Elizabeth, under the first wife was born after the date of the marriage to the second wife. Likewise, two other children under the second wife, Anne (whose maiden name Sammis was provided by another source) were born at dates earlier than the fourth child under the first wife, though after the date of marriage to Anne. Then Elizabeth is repeated under Anne, though with the same date as the first listing. This mess is comparatively is quite neat. I saw several on Ancestry's One World Tree that were a great mish mash. It seems most likely that Alexander had one wife, married at the original date, which is one year before the date of the fist child Henry S. Another source has a more ordered statement of the birth of the children with two wives. The unknown wife in this scenario was the mother of Henry and Thomas. The second wife, Anne (no last name) is the mother of Alexander, born in 1691, and the rest of the children. A comment from another Strange descendant points out that the Strange estate in the colonies was named Hunstaton, after the estate the alternative history claims cannot be reliably tied to the Deven line of Alexander. Intersting, then, if the alternative claim is true, that their traditoinal American estate is so named. Lee Forbes posted the folloiwng comment on another posting of Alexander's profile in this genealogy. -------------------- Hunstanton home in Winnsboro, South Carolina Lee H Forbes My grandmother's father was Charles Edward Strange. Their home is depicted in a 1909 photo that was found in her papers. I visited the home in 2010 and have a recent photo on my site and also one I took in 2011. My grandmother once told me her family had been titled and her home was named for the family home in England. She was not pretentious and I never further questioned her. How I wish I could now! I have a mahogany console table she told me was made on the plantation. The plantation was once 80 acres and has been reduced to five. The Fairfield County Museum has a published book with a sketch of the home with the name of Hunstanton. I traced it back to Norfolk, England and the Le Strange name. The Strange genealogy in World Family Tree Pedigree #2932 listed one child as Amanda Jane Strange. I originally had two separate children named Amanda and Jane. These two names appear for two separate children in the 1850 census, with ages 2 years apart. All other children seem to be accounted for. In the 1860 census, the children are reported by initials only. One child is a girl, age 16, reported as AJ Strange. This makes it appear again that Amanda and Jane are two names for this one child. 1860 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 7 September, page 333 (Scan p 495), Hse #2360, Family #2403 A J Strange 16 F TN It may be that in spite of the separate listings with different ages in one census, that Amanda and Jane are one. Several family genealogies have Amada Jane as one person. But this looks like they are copying each other, so this is probably7 not multiple sources. I found that in the 1920 census, at age 76, Amanda is listed as Mandie J. 1920 Federal Census, Cocke County, Tennessee, Newport, District 49, page 22B, Hse #456, Fam #481, Retired, in household with son Lem: Hartsell, John H Head2 M W 79 TN TN TN No Occupation Hartsell, Mandie J Wife F W 76 TN TN TN No Occupation

See: Charles Dill, http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=cwdill&id=I10096: "David William Bailey of Spartanburg, SC he was a German immigrant." However, this is certainly an error, Bailey is a French-Norman name associated with a lineage in Ireland. Another descendant researcher later confirmed my own declaration of the Baileys as coming from Ireland. -- See also Ronna Chatham, http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:821656&id=I38895323 Charles Dill, http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=cwdill&id=I10096 Paul Strange provides some family information on Amos Strange and says: "This information was taken from the papers of Alexander Taylor Strange who in the Mid 1800s rode from home to home to collect the information. I do have a copy of the papers." -- Paul H Strange, http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.halifax/257.1/mb.ashx But Taylor Strange does not refer to the origin of the Baileys in his 1991 book on the Strange lineage. Amos Alexander Strange seems to be the first person of the Shropshire-Norfolk (Devon) LeStrange-Strange line to migrate to Georgia. Though some descendants stayed, he moved back east later and settled in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he died in June 1842. By then parallel lines of his family were well-established in Tennessee, primarily Jefferson and Cocke Counties. William Strange's daughter Julia Ann Clementine married Dock Patrick Gregory, and they moved west about 1894-5, first to Collin County, Texas, then to Stephens County, Oklahoma, and finally to Garvin County, Oklahoma. There was a later migration of Stranges from South Carolina (or North Carolina) that appears to be part of this same lineage. I have not yet been able to make the definite connection. Throughout the 1800s, various members of this same Strange lineage, either from Devon County or from the earlier line in Norfolk County, continued to migrate to various parts of North America, as well as a few to Australia. Some migrated directly to Texas, Colorado or other western areas. It appears that the greater part of those in Texas and contiguous states settled there from the great population center in Tennessee in various waves of movement of Tennesseans to the west. Their location is reported in the Ancestry.com index records as the Laurens District of South Carolina. But my understanding is that from 1791-1799, the area of Spartanburg was in what was designated as the Pickens District. The actual census page does not have any designation other than Spartanburg. The organization of Counties within Districts and then separate Counties shifts a lot in South Carolina, and I find different history sources reporting them different ways. Note the spelling of Amos' names in 1800. 1800 Federal Census, Laurens District, South Carolina, page 33 Amous Strainge 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 26-44 2 members of household under 16, 2 over 25 Two doors down from Amos is a David Bailey, reported in the age range of 45 and over. She continued to receive the same pension, through her move to Georgia in 1846, and payments were transferred to Georgia until her death on 3 February 1853 Bailey is a Norman name, deriving from the Norman-French word baillis, meaning "official." It is related to the word bailiff. In 1991 Alexander Taylor Strange published a book about the Strange lineage. He does not include details about the Baileys, even where they came form. But the Bailey/Bayley lineage is associated with Ireland. And family tradition in the Strange line reports that Frances' father David had immigrated from Ireland. Alexander Taylor Strange does give a basic statement about Amos Strange and his marriage to Frances Bayley. ================================ Amos [Strange], son of Edmond, a Revolutionary veteran, captain of a company and known to have been in several engagements, and to have enlisted three times. He was contemporanious [sic] with Col. Gideon Alloway Strange. [Ch 2 / p 26] As has been stated, Amos Strange was the son of Edmond Strange, and probably a half brother of William Henry Strange. He was born and raised in Virginia, and from that state entered the war of the Revolution, rising to the position of commanding a company having been Captain of Militia prior to the war. After the close of the war, he located in South Carolina, where others of the name, and most probably relatives were then living. Here he met and married Miss Francis Bayley, and to this union there were four children born ....
