Even though the children are all listed only by initials, both initials are given, which helps fill out the names. 1860, Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 7 September, page 333 (Scan p 495), Hse #2360, Family #2403 Jas M Strange 42 M Farmer TN S Strange 38 F TN Wm H Strange 18 M Laborer TN A J Strange 16 F TN M A Strange 15 F TN M C Strange 12 M TN J P Strange 10 M TN J W Strange 8 M TN M C Strange 7 M TN M W Strange 3 M TN J S Strange 6mos M TN We now know the father of this family as James M Strange. In addition to William, there were three additional girls reported in the 1850 census. Sarah, who have likely married in 1870, named after James' mother, was the oldest child in 1850 at age 10. The next child was Amanda, who was 4 in 1850, and probably was also married by 1870. In the 1860 census there was another entry for a child that does not appear in 1870. In 1860 listed after M C (matching Malinda) is J P. He is 10 years old in 1860, which matches John in 1850. John was reported as 9 months old in the 1850 census. But then after J P there is J W, who matches John W in 1870. But the age of JW is 8 and John W 17, which correlates these two, but seems to be off for the John in 1850, who we would expect to be about 20 in 1870. So John/John W match by name, but JP and John W are closer by reported age. The age problem is not very definitive, because as we see over and over, ages vary widely in censuses. It is possible that J P is another child we lack other information on who was born right after the census of 1850. This is quite possible, since John was already over 9 months old in October 1850. He could have died before the 1870 census, so only showed up in the 1860 census. This name does not appear in any of the genealogies I have of this family, and I have found no other documentary evidence of another child between Malinda and Murphy. In 1870 living next to James and Sarah is his son William with his wife Edia and their children. On the other side of William are James' father James (86) and mother Sarah (90). 1880 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 14 June Civil District 5, Enumeration District 177, page 29, Hse #234, Fam #238 Strange, James M M W 63 Farmer TN NC VA Strange, Susan F W 58 Wife Kpg Hse TN TN TN Strange, Joseph S M W 20 Son Farm Hand TN TN TN Strange, Mary S F W 16 Dau At Home TN TN TN This 1880 census reports the father of James as born in North Carolina. William STRANGE M W 59 Farmer TN VA VA This is a common error in census reporting. The mother of both men is reported as born in Virgina. The report on elder James who appears to be the father of William and younger James reports he was born in North Carolina, but his wife Sarah was born in Virginia. It could be this is the source of the mixed report, remembered differently by the brothers, or recorded erroneously by the enumerator. This kind of detail is not included in the earlier censuses, so we do not have full information for comparison to make a definitive statement. There are other Strange families in North Carolina in this era, so the North Carolina connection makes sense. There is an oddity in the records about James S. This name first appears in the 1880 census, but in the same position among the children as the child named Tipton S in the 1870 census, and there is no Tipton in 1880. Perhaps there is an error of transcription in the 1880 census. But it appears that this is the same child with a name of James Tipton S. You will notice several children of this family have three given names. His several names appear in various records, and his death certificate has simply James Sherman Strange, clarifying the initial S in some records. His grave has only J Sherman Strange. 1880 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 17 June, Militia District 5, Enumeration District 179, page 39 (scan 516C), Hse #286, Fam #290 Strange, William W M 59 Farmer TN VA VA Strange, Mary A F W 56 Wife Keeping House TN TN SC Strange, James S W M 13 Son Farm Hand TN TN TN The oldest child of this family was also named James, James C, born about 1842 or 1844! The calendar was in transition during Jane's lifetime, with most of Europe using the new Gregorian calendar, but the English domains still resisting, so years, and often months vary. Jane was already a member of the Quaker meeting when she decided to marry John Watkins. John and Jane lived in Black Water Depot, Surry County, Virginia. Their section of Surry County became part of Sussex County, when it was created in 1754. "On February 1, 1754 an act for the creation of Sussex County became effective." -- Sussex County: A Tale of Three Centuries, http://www.nathanielturner.com/sussexcountyataleofthreecenturies.htm In May Blackwater Depot was in the county of Sussex, Virginia. Blackwater Depot was named for the Blackwater River. This river was the northern demarcation line for the new Sussex County. That source also tells us that the College of William and Mary was established by royal charter in 1694, including 10,000 acres south of the Blackwater River. This college is now within the city of Williamsburg, Virginia, at the edge of colonial Williamsburg.
The Strange family genealogy in World Family Tree Pedigree # 2932 has a child named Amanda Jane Strange. In 1850, there were two separate girls named Jane and Amanda, ages 2 and 4 respectively. No explanation is included in the WFT listing for Amanda Jane. An otherwise credible and careful genealogy in One World Tree also has only one child with both names, again with no explanation or correlation to the census. Since the census has two separate children, I am listing them this way. The census surely would not make such an error as listing the same child twice under different names. No separate child with initials matching Jane appears. There is one child, with an age to match Amanda, with the initials A J. Perhaps the entries in the 1850 census were a duplication due to some error by the enumerator? Or perhaps the child named Jane had died between the censuses.

The Edward West Family Data Collection gives John's name as John Strange Strange. His son Alexander likewise has the same name for middle name and surname according to this formulation. Alexander's oldest son Henry has the middle initial S, which might stand for the middle name Strange also. Some sources report John's full name was John Henry Strange.
Some sources report 1595 as the birth year for this John Strange. Others report 1605. It seems that the 1605 date fits better with factors across the generations, such as marriage dates and birth of children. Few sources that give dates provide with original documentation or sourcing. This John Strange whom I have shown as born in 1605, Robert reports as born in 1595. He also reports that the name of his wife was Mary Arnell, and gives a different date for her birth also, 1607, rather than 1600, which I got from other genealogies. Robert has a birth location, which, lacking any location from other sources, I am using here: born Hennock, Devon. Other sources have shown Mary with only a last initial, but it was M, rather than A.
It is in this era where we begin seeing variations in this family name, shifting gradually from the French Norman naming pattern to the modern English "surname" pattern of usage. Some branches of the family still call themselves Le Strange, but the simple Strange is more common. This source gives the place of John's death as Bedford. This could be a typographical slip, substituting the common name Bedford for the Bideford that keeps recurring in the family line. But Bedford is another town in the county of Devon, so could have been intended. A couple of sources also have Bedfordshire. This may also be an error confusing the county name with Bedford town in Devon.
Some genealogies report he died in 1730 in Bideford, Devon, England, but they provide no documentation.
