John and Sarah moved to Missouri in about 1856. The 1860 Moniteau County, Missouri, census says their first son F Marion was born in Tennessee, and the second child, William Howard, was born in Missouri. The birth years based on their ages would be 1855 and 1857, respectively, which means they moved likely in 1856, though it could have been in the second half of 1855 or the first half of 1857. There were three generations named John W Strange. I have not discovered what the middle initial stands for. It is not certain if the first had the same middle name as for his son and grandson. One source has the title Sr for the first John W, born in 1751 in Virginia. This would normally indicate that the son's name was exactly the same as his. I do find one source, however, oddly calling his son Sr and his grandson Jr, with no special designation for the grandfather. This would seem to indicate that the middle name of the grandfather was different from the other two, and that the middle name of the son and grandson were the same. The name of the first John W Strange's wife is not known. All sources I have found except one report the three sons for him which I have here. One source lacks William. One source, however, does give the year of marriage. Willma Butts and Pam Eagle recopied the stones and dug some of them out of the ground. We found two that had been completely covered over with grass. Another stone was found along the fence. Dates of birth for John W Strange vary. Some have reported Abt 1781, while others report 1791. Sources report about 11 total children of John W (II) and Rebecca Strange. I have shown only lastborn John W Strange III, to indicate that one branch of the family moved to the Midwest. One genealogy reports that John died in 1850. If so, this was after October 1850. The census that year was 23 October 2007.
In the family of James and Susannah Strange, a son John is first reported in the 1850 census, where John is 9 months old at the October census. This seems to tell us that John was born in July 1850. In 1870 John W is reported as 17 years old, which is a bit young for what we expect. 1850 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 23 October, District 13, page 138, Hse #961, Fam #995 James Strange 35 M Farmer Tennessee Susannah Strange 35 F Tenn John Strange 3mos M Tenn [b Jun 1850] 1860 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 7 September, page 333 (Scan p 495), Hse #2360, Family #2403 Jas M Strange 42 M Farmer TN S Strange 38 F TN J W Strange 8 M TN The 1860 census is confusing. There are two sons between Malinda and Murphy reported as J P and J W. The entry for JW seems to match John W in 1870, and the age of John W in 1860 is 8. However, JP is reported as age 10 in 1860, so this seems to match John, less than one year old in the 1850 census. The middle initial P does match anything else I have found in genealogies or public records. There could have been one other son born soon after the 1850 census, who died before the 1870 census. The genealogies I have found on this family do not report any child to match this. This mystery is similar to the mystery of Amanda and Jane. In 1850 two daughters are reported Amanda age 4 and Jane age 2. Only Amanda or Amanda J shows up after this. Several genealogies have Amanda Jane, with no other daughter to match another Jane between Amanda and Malinda. 1870 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 23 July, District 3, PO Trion, p. 7, Hse/Fam #42 Strange, James M 53 M W Farmer TN Strange, Susannah 48 F W Kpg Hse TN Strange, John W 17 M W TN 1880 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 14 June, Fifth Civil District, Enumeration District 177, p. 29, Hse #236, Fam #240 Strange, John W M W 27 Farmer TN TN TN Cannot write Strange, Mary A F W 21 Wife Keeping House TN NC TN Cannot write Strange, James P M W 2 Son TN TN TN The 1900 census reported that John was born in August 1848, but in the 1850 census he was reported as 3 months old, meaning he was born about June 1850 ( if fugured form actual page date) or February 1850 (if fugured fromthe actual official censuse date of 1 June), 1900 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 15 June, Civil District 17, District 55, page 9B, Hse/Fam #165 Strange, John W Head W M Aug 1848 51 Married 23 years TN TN TN Farmer Owns Strange, Polly A Wife W F Feb 1855 45 Married 23 years 4 children/4 living TN TN Strange, Walker A Son W M Apr 1884 16 TN TN TN Farm Laborer -- page 10A -- Strange, Daisie K Dau W F June 1895 4 TN TN TN This census reports that John and Polly, reported as Mary in the last census, have been married 23 years. Andy, howver, is the only name he ever had. He did not even have a middle name. By 1910, Julia and Dock had moved to Chikckasaw Naiotn. which had become part of Oklahoma in November 1907. They were enumerated in Richland Township of Stephens County near Marlow. I added a memorial for Julia and Dock on Find a Grave in the Antioch Cemetery, based on family information. -------------- Julia Ann Clementine Strange Gregory Birth Jan. 21, 1855 Jefferson County, Tennessee Death May 29, 1935 Antioch, Garvin County, Oklahoma Julia Ann was the daughter of William B Strange and Mary Ann Hance. She was born in Jefferson county, Tennessee, and was married there to Dock Patrick Gregory on 13 Aug 1879. Julia and Dock moved to McKinney, Texas about 1894 or 1895. Then they moved on to Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory about 1898 or 1899. They were enumerated in the 1900 census of Chickasaw Nation. After living near Marlow for a few years, they moved about 1915 or so to Antioch, near Elmore City in Garvin County, Oklahoma, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Family information reports that Dock, Julia Ann and their oldest son William were buried in the Antioch Cemetery. But their names do not appear on burial lists there.
