Notes for Laura Jane STRANGE

A Strange Family genealogy gives Laura's names as Laura Frances. Probably
because of the error in James' last name in the marriage record. The 1880
census lists her as Laura J.

1880 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 16 June, Civil District 5,
Enumeration District 177, page 32, Hse #263, Fam #267

One genealogy reports the names of Laura's two husbands, but has no vital
information. We are told that there were no children of either of the Laura
Strange marriages. Death and burial information is not known. The birth date
of August 1876, reported in the genealogy below, comes from the 1900 census.
I have not found any independent report of a birth date for Laura.

She is again listed as Laura J in the 1900 census. At that time 24-year-old
Laurie was still living at home with her parents and some younger siblings.

With this consistent listing as Laura J, I am wondering how the older
genealogy (with some good detail but no documentation) got the name Laura
Frances. As I searched for further documentation in September 2009, I noticed
again the name of her husband, James France, and wondered if this compiler had
confused the married name France with a given name Frances. I found that his
name was miswritten on their marriage record in 1908.

In quick order, I found Laura Jane France with her husband James France in
Cocke County, just across the line from Jefferson County. (The Strange and
Gregory families had lived near the county line on the Jefferson side, but
done much of their business on the Cocke County side, where the county seat of
Newport was close to the Jefferson County line.)

Relatives are living all around them. Next door is Charles France age 25, who
appears to be James' son. Next door to Charles is Laura's uncle Greenberry
Strange and his wife Sarah France. Two doors away on the other side is Joseph
Hance, a relative of Laura's brother-in-law Hugh Hance, who married her sister
Caroline.

Laura and her second husband, Joseph Siar Samples, later moved to North
Carolina, where they spent the rest of their lives.

Living two doors away from Joseph and Laura is one of Laura's kinfolks, Cephus
A Strange. I have not found this name before finding 32-year-old Cephus here
in Gastonia, North Carolina, with his with Lottie D and their children, Willie
M, Clyde E and Bonnie L. I subsequently found that apparently this is a son
of Greenberry Strange. In 1920, he and his new wife Lettie are living next
door to Greenberry, and Joseph Samples is only a few doors down, recorded on
the previous page of the census. I have not been able to find Laura in the
1920 census.

Joseph's death record reports his wife as Laura Strange Samples.

Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (December 14, 1739 - August 7, 1817) was a
French writer, economist, and government official. During the French
Revolution, he, his two sons and their families emigrated to the United
States.

His son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont was the founder of E.I. duPont de Nemours
and Company. He was the patriarch and progenitor of one of the United States'
most successful and wealthiest business dynasties of the 19th and 20th
centuries.

Pierre du Pont was born December 14, 1739, the son of Samuel Dupont and Anne
Alexandrine de Montchanin. His father was a watchmaker and French Protestant
or Huguenot. His mother was a descendant of an impoverished minor noble family
from Burgundy.

Du Pont married Nicole Charlotte Marie Louise le Dée de Rencourt in 1766,
also of a minor noble family. They had two sons who survived to adulthood,
including Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, the founder of E.I. duPont de Nemours
and Company in the United States.

Notes for Little Berry STRANGE

Some sources give his name as Littleberry with no middle name. This given name
appears in several families in this era, sometimes was one word/name and
sometimes as two. Common also was the given name Berry.

I have followed the date from a descendant, Charles Dill, with a birth year of
1807. One source had the same day, 20 July, but the year of 1789. This
differs from a genealogy by a descendant that seems to fit with other family
details. 1789 was the year that his parents married. The date of the
marriage, given in various sources, was 15 July 1789. The genealogy date of
1807 seems more reasonable, and matches the sequence of birth dates for all
the children. It appears Littleberry was the 6th child, not the first.

Charles Dill comments that the birth might have been in Laurens County, South
Carolina, instead of Spartanburg County. This, however, seems unlikely, since
Charles agrees with other sources that the next child, Amos Bradford Strange,
was born in Spartanburg County.

Little Berry is reported to have married twice. One genealogy reports wives
and children as follows:
LITTLEBERRY STRANGE was born 02 Jul 1807 in Laurens Co., SC or Spartanburg
Co., SC, and died 27 May 1888 in Brownstown, Chattooga Co., GA. He married (1)
ELIZABETH BRICE 15 Nov 1827 in Spartanburg Co., SC. She was born 1804 in SC.
He married (2) MARGARET A. BRICE 1853 in Chattooga Co., GA. She was born 1818
in Spartanburg Co., SC.

Children of LITTLEBERRY STRANGE and ELIZABETH BRICE are:
2. i. JOHN A. STRANGE, b. 12 Sep 1825, Spartanburg Co., SC; d. 27 Jan 1863,
Savannah, GA.
ii. WILLIAM W. STRANGE, b. 29 Oct 1828.
iii. LORENZO L. STRANGE, b. 1830.
iv. AMOS ALEXANDER STRANGE, b. 1833.
v. DAVID C. STRANGE, b. 1835.
vi. SARAH ANN STRANGE, b. 1837.

Children of LITTLEBERRY STRANGE and MARGARET BRICE are:

Little Berry Strange

Death May 27, 1888 Chattooga County, Georgia

Little Berry Strange was born July 2, 1807 near Spartanburg, Laurens Co.,
later Spartanburg Co., SC, the son of Amos Bradford Strange (1759-1842) &
Francis Bailey Strange. Little's first name was for a family friend and Berry
is a family name, although it is also seen as Littleberry, and even Littlebury
in some sources.

Grandson of Edmond Strange (1729/30-1800) & Martha Ellis (1730-1775)
Great-grandson of Henry Strange (1685-1746) & Mary Liptrot (1695-1750)
2nd gr-grandson of Alexander Strange, Sr. (1665-1725)

On Nov. 15, 1827, he married Elizabeth Brice. In 1841, the family moved to
Chattooga Co., GA near Broomtown at the foot of Taylor's Ridge in Chattooga
Co. Little Berry and his brother, William Bradford Strange, founded a church,
school, cemetery, and a camp meeting ground, called South Carolina Camp
Ground.

Two of his sons, Lorenzo L. and David C. Strange became Methodist ministers.
Two more sons, John A. & Thomas F. Strange, gave their lives for the South,
during the Civil War. After Elizabeth died in 1852, he married her sister,
Margaret, widow of his nephew, Henry [who had died just a few weeks earlier].
Little Berry died May 27, 1888, and his tombstone read, "A Faithful Class

Lucinda Jane's age in census of 1880 was 19, which would make it seem the year
of birth about 1861. But she was reported as already 1 year old in 1860. In
1870 she was reported as 11. We would have expected an age of 21 in 1880. In
1880 the birthdays of Lucinda Jane and Rachel are still two years apart,
though two years younger than the expected. This may mean that both their
birthdays were in July. The 1880 census was in July (before a July birthday),
while the 1870 census was in August (after a July birthday). I have reported
her birthday on the basis of 1860 and 1870, with birth month in July, making
her birth date July 1859, and likewise for Rachel.

Jefferson County, Tennessee, marriage records indicate that Lucinda married a

Her age here is 63, which would make birth in 1854. The older age has to be
wrong. even if they were not focused on exact years, her parents could not
have mistaken a 1-year-old for a 4-year-old, and likewise an 11-year-old for a
14-year-old.

Notes for Lula Euphemia STRANGE

1906 Cherokee Roll, Citizens by Blood, Minor Children
Under Provision of an Act of Congress 26 April 1906
#378 Strange, Lula Euphemia Age 2 [b abt 1904] Female 1/32 Card #564

I am puzzled to find that none of the other children were on the list. Lula
had a sister named Ella born just two years before, and Her sister Janie was
born in 1900. Why were they not in the list? Likewise Mary Emma, born in
1895. Their mother is reported as 1/16 Cherokee in the 1910 census. Degree
of Native blood was not reported in the 1920 census. In the 1910 census her
name was entered as Lulu. Several censuses use this spelling, and show no
other source, lacking the 1920 census which has her name right.

Lula and William moved to Arizona, where their son William Joseph Jr was born.
They were back in Oklahoma in 1930, where William was working as a machinst in
a Steel Comapny mill.

According to the Tucker comment above, Wililam and Lula were divorced and
William did not die until 1947. But in the 1940 census, Lula is reported as a
widow, and has returned back home with her son to Rogers County, Oklahoma,
where she is teaching school. Perhaps she reported herself as widowed to
avoid saying she had been divorced. No record for William has been found
after the 1930 census.

Several genealogies report a date of death for Lula. But none of them tell
how they got the date. None have documentation for anything but the 1910
census. Some don't even attach that. Some genealogies report her name as it
is written in the 1910 census, Lulu. But her name was Lula. She was named
after a sister of her father called Tallulah, or nicknamed Lula.
