Two children named Michael were reported by this source in this family. This is a common event in the 1880s, and there are separate dates given for each. However, there were some suspicious details that made me suspect there was something wrong here. The second Michael was given a different birth year, but was reported as dying the next year -- the same year the first Michael died. This was a further problem because there was another child born both the previous year and a set of twins born the same year reported for the birth of the second Michael. I conclude that this was an erroneous entry, and there should be only one Michael in this family. The correct dfates seem to be that recorded for Micahael on Find a Grave, born 1716, died 1717. The Strange family genealogy in World Family Tree, Pedigree #2932, lists this child as Wesley, and has no person named Miles. The name Wesley matches the initial W in the census. This matches an entry in the 1910 census, where Wesley Strange is reported as 57 years old. There is a Wesley Strange, age 36, recorded in the 1880 census in Jefferson County, Tennessee, but his 35-year-old wife is named Mary, so it does not appear to be this Miles Wesley Strange. But I cannot identify another Wesley Strange. One researcher comments that this is John Wesley, but does not tell us his parents' names. That Wesley and Mary have the following children in 1880: Marthy Strange 17 Gorge Strange 12 Margrate Strange 9 Coro Strange 5 William Strange 4 Lin Strange 1 The birth year given in the Strange genealogy is 5 years different, however, from that I had used based on the 1870 census. In the census, Miles W is 13, so I estimate birth as Abt 1857. Wesley, on the other hand, is reported by the genealogy as born in 1852. A 2 and a 7 are easily misread on the handwritten censuses and other documents. The known facts otherwise, however, indicate these two names apply to the same person. We know ages vary unreliably in some censuses. The 1900 census reports his first name as Milas rather than Miles. This reports his birth date as October 1855. I would think the report of three years old in 1860 is more likely correct, making him born in 1856 or 1857. Similarly the 1870 census age of 13 years old. 1900 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 13 June, Civil District 3, Enumeration District 43, page 9A, Hse #157, Fam #1582 Strange, Milas W Head W M Oct 1855 44 married 22 years TN TN TN Farm Laborer Rents Strange, Jane Wife W F Feb 1861 39 married 22 yrs 2 children/2 living TN TN TN Strange, Ernest D Son W M June 1895 4 TN TN TN Strange, Mary S Dau W F Mar 1898 2 TN TN TN Jane's brother William M Edmonds lives next door. Two sources report Murphy as well as his wife died in Jefferson County, Tennessee, where they were married, and where he was born. One also reports his birthplace there, as given above. However, a family in Missouri in 1880 appears to match them in every detail. It appears that the family moved at some time before 1880 to Madison County, Missouri, where they are reported to be living in German Township. Other Stranges from this family moved to Missouri, but are reported in Moniteau County. Murphy C and wife Mary F are shown with two children. Their last child Charles C Strange is aged 5 months. He would have been born in December 1879 or January 1880. Initially the latest information I could find on Murphy Columbus and his family was this 1880 census. I had seen his death information in an anonymous genealogy in the World Family Tree collection (Genealogy.com), which gave his death information as 3 August 1919 in Jefferson County, Tennessee, but I had not found any information about his moving back to Tennessee. In November 2007, I got an email from Steven Strange, a great grandson of Murphy's telling me they had indeed moved back to Tennessee, where more children were born. In 1881, Murphy and Mary had a son named Arthur, in Jefferson County, Tennessee, where the family had come from. Other children were born later. From the dates of birth of the children, it appears Murphy and Mary were in Missouri only between one year and 1.5 years. Their son Charles C was born in Tennessee in January 1880, and they were in the census in Missouri in June 1880. Then their next child, Arthur Strange, was born in Tennessee in October 1881, according to Arhtur's grandson Steven Strange, and the 1900 census. I later found the record of Murphy and Mary and their family in Jefferson County, Tennessee. 1900 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 14 June, Civil District 17, Enumeration District 55, page 9A, Hse/Fam #149 Strange, Murphy C Head W M Feb 1850 50 Married 25 yrs TN VA TN Farmer Owns Strange, Mary Wife W F Aug 1855 44 Married 25 yrs 15 children, 12 living VA VA VA Strange, William H Son W M Nov 1878 21 Single TN TN VA Farm Laborer Strange, Author S Son W M Oct 1881 18 Single TN TN VA Farm Laborer Strange, Senter S Son W M May 1887 13 Single TN TN VA Farm Laborer Strange, Walter Son W M Aug 1889 10 Single TN TN VA Farm Laborer Strange, Samantha J Dau W M Nov 1893 6 Single TN TN VA Strange, Florence E Dau W F Mar 1895 5 Single TN TN VA Strange, Carry M Dau W F May 1898 2 Single TN TN VA Strange, Callie C Dau W F Mar 1900 2mos Single TN TN VA 1910 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 3 May, Civil District 6, District 71, page 7A, Hse #120, Fam #122 Strange, Murphy C Head M W 56 Married 36 years TN TN TN Laborer. working Out Rents Strange, Mary Wife F W 54 Married 36 years 15 children, 12 living TN VA VA Strange, Walt Son M W 19 TN TN TN Farm Laborer Strange, Carl Son M W 17 TN TN TN Farm Laborer Strange, Samantha Daughter F W 16 TN TN TN Strange, Florence Daughter F W 14 TN TN TN Strange, Carie [sic] Daughter F W 11 TN TN TN Strange, Callie Daughter F W 9 TN TN TN Murphy died on 3 August 1919.
