He was born on December 17, 1836, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. William came to Walker County around 1845, with his parents. David William Strange was a farmer in Walker County until his death in 1869 at the age of 54. In the 1860 census, William Strange was listed as a farmer in the Pond Springs District of Walker County. William enlisted in the Confederate Army in March 1862. After rising to the rank of Captain, he was captured in late 1863, and held prisoner at Rock Island, Illinois until late 1864. After the war, Captain Strange served as a Sheriff over eleven counties including Walker and Catoosa Counties. Captain Strange married Nancy Ann Boss in 1857 in Walker County. They had the following ten children: Henry Lucien, born December 5, 1858; died October 1876; William Johnson, born September 29, 1860, died 1943; Lula Ann, born March 16, 1862; died July 26, 1949; John H Morgan, born May 9, 1864; died November 30, 1865; Gordon Lee, born December 19, 1866; died August 29, 1929; Stella J, born May 7, 1869; died August 7, 1906; Florence Octavia, born October 11, 1871; died May 6, 1889; Cicero James, born February 8, 1874; died November 7, 1967; Julia Etta, born June 3, 1877; died September 1, 1882; Charles Edgar, born September 1, 1879; death unknown; All of the children were born in Walker County. Captain William Strange left Walker County in the summer of 1887 and moved to Morrilton, Arkansas. In 1889, Captain Strange moved to Chelsea, Oklahoma, where he died on May 28, 1901. -- By Lola Carlock Bridges, newspaper unknown, provided by Ronald and Katherine Bradley on Find a Grave, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=8578493 ---------------------
In some early genealogical collections, with very poor or no documentation, the children of William Strange of Jefferson County, Tennessee, was mixed with children of William Strang of Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York. Before many resources became available on line, one genealogy in the One World Tree genealogy collection reported what appears to be this same William Strange, with wife Polly West. That Polly West is reported as born in 1816 in North Carolina. The place of death for William's father John W is Buncombe County, North Carolina. But all the family genealogies of the Strang line of Stillwater, New York, all have the wife as Polly West, excepting a couple that call her Polly Stewart or Mary Stewart (perhaps a second married name). I have found documentation of this Polly West reporting her birth in New York state. It remains unclear whether the wife of William Strange of Tennessee was even named Polly West. If I can find documented info on William Strange's wife, I will add that. Only one child, Nancy, is reported in that early Strange genealogy, while al lteh chidlren of William Strang and Polly West of Stillwater, New York are reproted and have memorials in Find A Grave with full dates and places. Thus the William Strang and family in the cemetery at Stillwater, New York, has been confused with the Strange line in Jefferson County, Tennessee, apparently due to an error in an early careless genealogy. The relationship notes in the memorials on Find a Grave for the Strang family in Stillwater indicate that William Strang's parents were William Strang and Abigail Simmons Strang. Most genealogies have the wife of John W Strange of Tennessee, the father of William Strange, as Abigail Simmons. But I have documented Abigail Simmons in New York, and she fits as the wife of William Strang Sr in New York. Thus the wife of John W and his son both remain unknown. But the same wife's name is given as Polly West with the same birth and death information as the wife of William Strange, son of John Strange and no name for the wife in sources I have consulted.

William G, first reported in 1870 as age 2, then again as William G in 1880, age 10 This seems odd, but we also find two children named James, also spaced close to the beginning and the end of the births. Lack of further details on either of these sets of names limits our understanding of this family.
It appears that this family lived here their whole life, all children being born in the same county, if not the same locale. No specific death information is available for most of them. Descendants of Julia Ann Clementine have specific information on her and her family with Dock Patrick Gregory. Names reported are based on forms of names for the same people in multiple censuses and family information from Loretta Gregory Gay for the family of William Strange. A couple of children do not match. I was initially able to work out basic family configurations from early censuses, which contained only the names and ages of heads of household. It appeared from the households and information on children and neighbouring heads of house (names and ages of family members not given in earlier censuses) that William and James Strange are brothers. This was confirmed by genealogies I later found with the names and relationships I was able to work out initially. Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002 William Strange Spouse Mary Ann Hance Marriage 12 Feb 1844 Jefferson County, Tennessee In the 1850 census, for the first time, entire families were reported. His words to my G-father, Samuel Lurs Strange was, everyday he prayed that he would be able to return to his wife and children in Alabama. He said he promised God if he would spare him he would serve him for the rest of his life. Released in 1865 he made his way back to Alabama. He fulfilled his poromise and served the lord for the rest of his life. I received an 8 x10 picture of him at a reunion with some of the men who had served under him. The full name given there is William Bradford Strange, which reflects an ancestor in an earlier generation. The mother's name is Jane Cody. Earlier information lacked the maiden name of William B's mother Susan Jane. His father's name was known to be John B, which we suspected was also Bradford. The first name only appears on this death certificate. Details available match.
