Stroud, James M W M 2 Son TX AL AL

By 1910, James is with his mother and brother John and other family members in
the new state of Oklahoma, enumerated in Stephens County, near Marlow a cattle
town and trading center on the Chisholm Trail.

1910 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 21 April, Richland Township,

James' mother lives next door with her second husband Rev William Chenault. I
see James and Laura's daughter Bertha was born in Texas about 1903, so they
came to Oklahoma as plans were underway to merge several Indian Nations with
Oklahoma Territory to form the new state of Oklahoma in 1907.

James' wife Laura is reported as having borne 2 children but only one is
living, yet two children are reported as his daughters. And the last one,
Lela (? name is hard to read) is 10 years old, while James and Laura have been
married only 7 years. Also the older child is listed after the younger
daughter, usually a sign of different parentage. So James was previously
married.

The enumerator has spelled the initials J H as the name Jay H, for John Henry
Stroud. This is Mollie Stroud's son, so it is interesting he was listed
simply as a Laborer, rather than a stepson of William. Notice that John (Jay)
is reported as being born in Tennessee, as the Chenault sons, although John
was born in Texas.

I found a marriage record for the date matching that reported in the Hensley

indicates that Frances Sanders had been married before marrying Joseph.

Notes for Joseph Thomas STROUD

Initial evidence indicated that Joseph Thomas Stroud was the son of James W (or
James H in some records) Stroud and Sarah Frances Wiggins. But there were
loose ends. One Stroud genealogist clarifies that with a critical bit of
family information.

Child of James W. Stroud is not Joseph Thomas Stroud
"The child of James W. Stroud was Joseph Edward Stroud who married Frances
Cordelia Sanders. This Joseph was born about 1859. I don't know when he died.

Several genealogies report a date of death for Joseph, but provide no

15 May 1932 - Age: 73 Victoria, Coffee, Alabama, USA

With this date I found an Alabama death record, but it has only the month, not
the day.

Alabama Deaths, 1908-59
Volume 19, Roll 3, Page #9324
J. T. Stroud
Death May 1932 Coffee County

A transcription of information on the death certificate has the full
information. But that record also reveals something else. This seems to be a
different Joseph T Stroud, because the mother's name is reported as Ella
Stroud, whereas the Joseph T Stroud we are reporting on is the son of Sarah
Frances Wiggins and James W Stroud. Our Joseph is documented with his mother
in this 1860 census (see above) and with his widowed mother in 1870.

His mother is reported as Frances in 1860 and Sarah in 1870 (see above). Thus
it seems several genealogies have the death information for the wrong Joseph T
Stroud attached to the son of Sarah Frances Wiggins and her husband James W
Stroud.

The death record cited here does not report his father for some reason. My
tree does not have an Ella married to a Stroud in this line, so I have not yet
(as of August 2013) identified this Ella Stroud and her son Joseph T. The
actual image of the death certificate is not available for viewing on
Ancestry.com, only their transcription

A memorial in Find a Grave provides a photo and information on a Thomas Stroud
with the matching birth date for our Joseph Thomas Stroud in 1859. But the
death date is the same as that on the death certificate above. The wife's
name on the double grave also matches, Martha Stroud, born March 2, 1862,
Died Dec 25, 1950. The presence of his wife until 1950 is a new problem here,
since in the 1910 census, J T was reported as being widowed. Was later
married to another woman also name Martha? Not likely if he died in 1932.

This Thomas Stroud is also buried with other Strouds of our family in the
Pleasant Ridge Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Coffee County, Alabama. These
facts may indicate that this Thomas Stroud is the same as our Joseph Thomas
Stroud, but the name of his mother was recorded incorrectly on the death
certificate. I cannot account for the name Ella Stroud nor the report that he
is widowed in 1930.. It seems to be a different Thomas Stroud, but I cannot
find another individual of this name..

Notes for Mollie STROUD

Mollie's actual name was Mary, as we would expect from the nickname Mollie.
She is thus listed in her first census in 1880 with her parents in Rockwall
County, Texas, northeast of Dallas.

1880 Federal Census, Rockwall County, Texas, 10 June, District 32, page 3,
Hse/Fam #21
Stroud, John A W M 29 Husband Farmer AL GA GA
Stroud, Mary R W F 30 Wife Keeping House AL SC SC
Stroud, Mary W F 9 Dau Attended School AL AL AL [b abt 1872]

Mollie Stroud married a man named Williams, then after his death, she married
Columbus L Lane, who had been widowed at the death of his first wife Mary
Miller. Her 3rd husband was Toliver Jorile Green, another widower.

Columbus Lane had grown up in Panola County, Texas, on the Louisiana border.
But while Mary was a child in her parents' home in Rockwall County, Texas, in
the 880 census, it appears to be Columbus that we find in Parker County,
Texas, west of Fort Worth, married to Mary Miller.

1880 Federal Census, Parker County, Texas, 4 June, Precinct 2, District 136,
page 8, Hse/Fam #356 Lane, Lafayette W M 20 Head Farmer TX LA LA [b abt 1860]
Lane, Mary W F 19 Wife Keeping House IL TN IL [b abt 1861] Lane, Tom W M 1mo
born May TX TX Ill

This is the farthest west that we have documentation for Columbus Lafayette
Lane. And his parents are both reported born in Louisiana, while othe reports
say his father was in GA and his mother in AL.

Despite the seeming discrepancy of parents' birth state, this census record
seems to match the general profile, and some genealogies reprot this as
documentation for Columbus L Lane in 1880. Some of the genealogies, however,
also lack the information about Mary (Mollie) Stroud Wiliams, and attribute
the later chidlren of Mollie with Columbus to Mary Miller. For now this 1880
census appears to be a legitimate record of Columbus Lafayette Lane, who was
widowed at the death of Mary Miller, and married Mollie Stroud in about 1889
or early 1990.

By 1900, Mollie Stroud had been married to Mr Williams and widowed after
bearing three children. She is in the home of her widowed mother Mary
(enumerated here as Martha).

In the 1900 census, we have an unusual documentation of Mollie's progress in
marriages after being widowed. She and her children are fully reported in two
different records for neighboring counties. Besides Mollie's enumeration with
her three sons in her mother's home in Kaufman County, Texas, she also appears
a second time in Hunt County, north of Kaufman, with her new husband Columbus
L Lane, with the same three children.

An odd thing about this is that the date of enumeration in Hunt County was
three days earlier than the enumeration in Kaufman County. So why was she
reported under her first married name, as a widow, when three days earlier she
had been recorded by another enumerator as the wife of her new husband? Thus
her last name and her marital status were both changed already.

Yet there can be no doubt this is the same Mollie with these same three sons
with the name Williams and the same given names and ages. There is one
anomaly related to Mollie's birth date, which is characteristic of the 1900
census.

There is one year's difference between the birth year in the two enumerations
of Mollie. Here is Hunt County it is reported as July 1871, while in the
Kaufman County enumeration it was July 1870. Also it is unclear what is
intended in the report of number of years married. It looks like the
enumerator reported the total numbers of years since Columbus' first marriage
and has drawn down the same number for Mollie, even though they have just
gotten married.

The number for Columbus looks like 20, but the number has no curve, looking
more like a Z than 2. The number for Mollie is also awkward, but looks like a
2. The report of them as married for 20 years cannot be right, since her
last Williams child is only 2 years old. Maybe the enumerator wanted to
report the total time they had been married to anyone, but the report for this
field is normally the number of years this husband and wife have been married.

The 1910 census reports that Columbus and Molly have been married 7 years.
How can that be when they are enumerated as a family in 1900, with the
Williams boys reported as his step-sons and Mollie as his wife? They are in
Rockwall County, a little west of Hunt County. The two separate census
reports and the ages of the children indicate Columbus and Mollie had just
gotten married before the 1900 census, perhaps as long as a year, so it should
have been 0 years or 1.

In 1910, the enumerator reports the place of birth of all the children as
Alabama, which is Mollie's birth state, not that of the Lane children's
mother, which was reported as Illinois in 1900. Wiley Lane in 1910 appears to
be Wiley Williams. There is an age discrepancy, with Wiley Lane being 8 years
old here, while Wiley Williams was already 2 in 1900. But there was no Lane
child named Wiley in the 1900 household.

Mollie Stroud Williams Lane was the 2nd wife of Toliver Jorile Green, and
apparently died without bearing children from this marriage. Mollie and T J
married sometime in the broad range between May 1910 and January 1920. This
is arrived at by the census reports for 1910 and 1902. In the 1910 census,
Joe (Toliver Jorile) is a widower.

This means he married Mollie Stroud Williams Lane sometime after 25 April
1910. In the 1920 census, T J (Joe T) is married to his second wife Mollie.
So far I have no closer date than this. Family sources had no dates for this
marriage. It is likely the marriage ceremony was in Marlow, county seat of
Stephens County, based on other family information.

Mollie is reported in the 1920 census in Richland Township, Stephens County,
Oklahoma (near Marlow), as the wife of Toliver Jorile, and also in the
household are two children from the first marriage, Minnie and Homer.

1920 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 2 Feb, Richland Township,
District 262, page 10A (No house of family numbers given), Joe (Toliver
Jorile) is married to Mollie in 1920:
Green, Joe T Head M W 46 OK GA AL Farmer
Green, Mollie Wife F W 48 AL AL AL
Green, Minnie Dau F W 20 OK AL AL
Green, Homer Son M W 12 OK AL AL

I note that the age of Homer is 12. For this census date of 1 February 1920,
this would mean he was born later than February 1907. But the known birth
date in the family information is 12 December 1906. He should be age 13 on 1
February 1920.

I have found no further information on Mollie in public records. Mollie died
some time before June 1926, when Joe (Toliver Jorile) Green married his third
wife, the widow Margaret (Maggie) Drucilla Welch née Crenshaw.

Some genealogies report a c hild earlier than Charllie, the infant Ira J
Forsyth, who is buried in Cedar Creek Cemetery, RTed River County, with other
Forsyths, with the same birth and death year of 1902. But we see that this
census reprots that Nipsie has had three children and all three are still
iving. Nipsie and Thoams only marrired in 1902. It is thought that Ira J
Forsyth was the stillborn child of Thomas' father Jason Forsyth and hsi second
wife Lavonia Reed. Lavonia died sometime about 1902, because later that year
Jason married Amanda White Moore a widow who lived nearby. It is thought she
died in childbirth, which would match this burial of Ira.
