Hill, Naoma W F 5 mos born Nov [sic] Dau Single TX MO TN [b abt Dec 1879]

Note that in Naoma's record, the age reported does not match the reported
month of birth. If she was 5 months old at census time 1 June 1880, she was
born in December some time. If born in November, as reported, she would have
been 6 months old on 31 May 1880. Oma's SS and grave report her birth month
as October 1879, so going by that, her age in 1880 should have been 7 months.

The Social Security record of their daughter Oma was the first record that
gave us Nancy's name ( in her nickname Nannie and maiden name Sullins). Naoma
is reported in the Social Security records as simply Oma, and that is the name
on her grave too.

Notes for Mildred Y SUTTON

"My cousin, Ken McSwain, asked me to contact you and provide some information
on my Dad, Thad McSwain. Ken said you were interested in his two marriages.
I do not have a lot of information, but from what I do have, my Dad first
married Juanita Rowland in 1940 (do not have the day) and married my mother,
Mildred Sutton, on June 28, 1947."
-- Sue McSwain Windham, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins

"Jimmie was the offspring of Uncle Thad. Shirley was the offspring of Mildred.
The other 2 girls, Sue, and Terrie, were full sisters."
-- Kenneth Wirt McSwain, Facebook Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 16 June
2017

The Social Security Death Index provides an exact birth date for Mildred, as
well as date and place of residence at death. Thad's second wife was named
Mildred and is buried in Stuttgart where they lived.

Social Security Death Index, www.ancestry.com
Mildred S McSwain
Born 27 Jan 1918
Died 1 Sep 2003
Last residence Stuttgart, Arkansas, Arkansas
SSN 546-20-7558 issued in California before 1951

A more complete Social Security record set reports details that would match
Mildred under a series of names that seem to indicate that the maiden name was
Sutton, and the first married name Smith, either one matching the S in her
burial name Mildred S McSwain. Her father's name is Sutton and name changes
were made in sequence to Smith, DeSpain and McSwain. This seems to indicate
that Mildred was married twice before marrying Thad McSwain.

"Thad’s daughter Sue said that Thad did adopt Shirley shortly after he and
Mildred married. Shirley was born April 15, 1944. Her biological father was
named Mike DeSpain."
-- Byrdie McSwain, Facebook Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 12 December
2018

Note that Social Security records reported that in October 1946, Mildred
changed her name to DeSpain, indicating her marriage some time before this.
Her daughter Shirley DeSpain (later adopted by Thad McSwain) was born in 1944.
So the marriage was some time before 1944. The change of name must have been
reported only at the time of her divorce from Mike DeSpain. Because it was
only a few months later, in June 1947, that she married Thad McSwain.

Paul was given some pages form a Bible belonging to his great grandmother Lula
Swan Strange. These pages provided birth dates and some other information on
family members. The Bible is identified on page 3 as "Lula Strange her book,"
a common way of identifying a personal book in that era. The notes appear to
be in Lula's hand, as there are some personal references and the handwriting
is uniform.
