Notes for Gilbert 3rd Lord TALBOT

The following excerpt from Burke's Complete Peerage provides a brief but rich
overview of Gilbert 3rd Lord Talbot.

-------------------
BARONY OF TALBOT (III)

GILBERT (TALBOT), LORD TALBOT, son and heir, was born about 1332. He served in
Gascony with the Prince of Wales and was still there in the King's service, 1
February 1356/7. He was summoned to Parliament from 14 August 1362 to 8 August
1386. He did homage to Richard II at his Coronation, 16 July 1377, and was
about to cross the seas, September following. On 6 June 1380 he had a pardon
of outlawry for not appearing to answer John Sewal, citizen and mercer of
London, touching a debt of £300. At the time of the Peasants' Revolt in 1381,
he was a Commissioner for co. Hereford, 7 July, to array the lieges against
the insurgents.

He accompanied Edmund of Langley, Earl of Cambridge, on his expedition to
Portugal, 1381-82, taking part in the capture of Higuera-la-Real (province of
Badajoz); was summoned, 13 June 1385, to be at Newcastle-on-Tyne, 14 July, for
service against the Scots; and served from July 1386 in John of Gaunt's
unsuccessful expedition to Spain and Portugal, being present at the capture of
Vigo and the affair at Noya, and accompanying the Duchess Constance to visit
the King of Portugal at Oporto.

He married, 1stly, before 8 September 1352, Pernel, daughter of James
(BUTLER), 1st EARL OF ORMOND [IRL], by Eleanor, daughter of Humphrey (DE
BOHUN), 4th EARL OF HEREFORD and 3rd EARL OF ESSEX, Constable of England, by
his wife Elizabeth, daughter of EDWARD I. She was living, 28 May 1365, and is
said to have died in 1368. He married, 2ndly, before 16 November 1379, Joan,
widow of John (CHERLETON), LORD CHERLETON, feudal LORD OF Powis (died 13 July
1374] daughter of Ralph (DE STAFFORD), 1st EARL OF STAFFORD, by Margaret,
daughter and heir of Hugh (DE AUDLEY), EARL OF GLOUCESTER. He is said to have
died 24 April 1387 of the pestilence at Roales, in Spain, aged about 55. His
widow died before 1397.

Marriage Notes:
1st Wife
Gilbert married Petronella Butler, daughter of James Le Botiller Earl Of
Ormond and Eleanor De Bohun, before 8 Sep 1352. (Petronella Butler was born
about 1332 in Ormonde, Kerry, Ireland, christened in Policott,
Buckinghamshire, England, died on 23 Apr 1368 and was buried in 1368.)
2nd Wife
Gilbert next married Joan Stafford Baroness Cherleton, daughter of Ralph De
Stafford Earl Of Stafford and Margaret De Audley Baroness Audley, before 16
Nov 1379. (Joan Stafford Baroness Cherleton was born about 1336 in
Staffordshire, England and died before 1379.)

Notes for Gilbert 5th Lord Strange of Blackmere TALBOT

Gilbert was styled Gilbert of Irchingfield. He became the 5th Lord Strange of
Blackmere, inheriting this title and the lands from his mother, Ankaret Le
Strange. We are told in sources that the tile of Blackmere passed into the
Neville family when his wife Ankaret married Thomas Neville, 6th Lord
Furnival, at the death of Richard Talbot.

I note that according to the date of death of Ankaret, she died before her
son, but only by 6 years. it seems odd that if these dates are correct, the
tile would have passed from Gilbert to his mother's second husband. This may
have happened because Gilbert died without children. Gilbert married Beatriz
de Portugal de Aviz, but I have no information on any children.

Gilbert was a Knight of the Garter. Here is soem information on that order.

-----------------------------------------

King Edward III founded the Order of the Garter as "a society, fellowship and
college of knights." The foundation year is usually presumed to be 1348,
although dates from 1344 to 1351 have been proposed. The King's wardrobe
account shows Garter habits first issued in the autumn of 1348. Regardless,
the Order probably was not established before 1346; its original statutes
required that each member already be a knight (what would now be referred to
as a knight bachelor) and some of the initial members were only knighted that
year.

Various legends account for the origin of the Order. The most popular legend
involves the "Countess of Salisbury" (probably either his future
daughter-in-law Joan of Kent or her former mother-in-law, Catherine Montacute,
Countess of Salisbury). While she was dancing with or near King Edward at
Eltham Palace, her garter is said to have slipped from her leg. When the
surrounding courtiers sniggered, the king picked it up and tied it to his leg,
exclaiming, "Honi soit qui mal y pense," ("Shamed be the person who thinks
evil of it."), the phrase that has become the motto of the Order.

According to another legend, King Richard I was inspired in the 12th century
by St George the Martyr while fighting in the Crusades to tie garters around
the legs of his knights, who subsequently won the battle. King Edward
supposedly recalled the event in the 14th century when he founded the Order.
Another explanation is that the motto refers to Edward's claim to the French
throne, and the Order of the Garter was created to help pursue this claim. The
use of the garter as an emblem may have derived from straps used to fasten
armour.

Soon after the founding of the Order, women were appointed "Ladies of the
Garter," but were not made companions. King Henry VII discontinued the
practice in 1488; his mother, Margaret Beaufort, was the last Lady of the
Garter before Queen Alexandra. Except for female sovereigns, the next Lady of
the Garter named was Queen Alexandra, by her husband King Edward VII. King
George V also made his consort, Queen Mary, a Lady of the Garter and King
George VI subsequently did the same for his wife, Queen Elizabeth. Throughout
the 20th century, women continued to be associated with the Order, but except
for foreign female monarchs, they were not made companions. In 1987, however,
it became possible to install "Ladies Companion of the Garter" under a statute
of Queen Elizabeth II.

Notes for John 1st Earl Of Shrewsbury TALBOT

John Talbot was created Earl of Salop. According to the Encyclopaedia
Britannica, Salop was the official name of the title, but Talbot used the
name Shrewsbury, by which it is commonly known, and officially so in later
times.

Shrewsbury was the chief English military commander in the last phase of the
Hundred Years' War against French. He was made marshall of France for English
King Henry VI in 1436 after he prevented Normandy from falling to the French.
He was killed in an attempt to lift the French siege of the English castle of
Castillon in Guyenne. This became the last battle of the Hundred years' War,
though no peace treaty was signed to formally end hostilities until 1574 at
Piquigny."
-- Encyclopaedia Britannica, Electronic Edition 1996, articles "Shrewsbury,
John Talbot, 1st earl of" and "Castillon, Battle of"

Here are further details from Burke's Peerage

=========================
1st Earl of Shrewsbury, K.G., summoned to Parliament 1409 as "Johannes Talbot
de Furnyvall". He was appointed 1412 Lord Justice of Ireland, and 1414 Lord
Lieut. of Ireland, he governed there for 7 years. This Lord Talbot, whom
Shakespeare terms "the great Alcides of the field" was one of the most
renowned captains of the warlike age he lived in. His earlier feats of arms
were under Henry V in France, at the siege and capture of Meaux, and he seems
to have inherited the heroic spirit of his royal master.

He gloriously sustained the cause of Henry VI throughout his French realm, in
battle after battle, until the very name of Talbot became a terror to the
Frenchmen. He was, for a moment, checked in his career by the Maid of
Orleans, at Patay, 1429, when, his army being routed, he was taken prisoner.
He was exchanged for Ambrose de Lore, a celebrated French partisan, and was
soon in activity again, the master-mind and master-director of the fierce
contest in France, doing good and effective service every day. In reward he
was created, 20th May 1442, EARL OF THE COUNTY OF SALOP, or as usually styled,
EARL OF SHREWSBURY.

He was subsequently re-constituted Lord Lieut. of Ireland, and elevated to the
Peerage of that kingdom, 17 July 1446, as EARL OF WATERFORD, having been
appointed at the same time Lord High Steward of Ireland. After this he went
once more to fight in France. He commanded a fleet, landed and took Falaise;
as Lieut. of the Duchy of Acquitaine, landed in Medoc and made Bordeaux
surrender and the surrounding minor towns send in instant submission.

He thence advanced to the relief of Chastillon, and met the besieging French
army commanded by their then greatest leader, Dunois, Bastard of Orleans. In
the battle which ensued, 20 July 1453, Talbot, in the sixty-third year of his
age, received a wound in the head, which proved immediately mortal. He had
been victorious in 40 different battles and dangerous skirmishes; his death
proved fatal to the English dominion in France, which never flourished
afterwards.

Notes for Richard 4th Lord Talbot of Goderich TALBOT

Ankaret Le Strange remained the Baroness of Blackmere during her first marriage
to Richard Lord Talbot of Goodrich (spelled Goderich in that time, and Godric
in the earliest form) Lord Talbot. Lord Talbot was the custodian of the Le
Strange Castle of Blackmere as well as his Goderich Castle.

At her death she passed the Blackmere title to her second husband Thomas 6th
Lord Furnival Neville. At her death Thomas Neville became Lord Strange of
Blackmere. Thus the Blackmere title and lands passed from the Le Strange
family into the Neville family.

The date of marriage is a bit uncertain. Two sources, connected with the Le
Strange family line, report the marriage to Richard Talbot was on or before 23
August 1383. Other sources, Tudorplace and Worldroots, have seemed credible
and careful. However, with a birth date for Ankaret of about 1350, the
marriage date in 1383 would mean that Ankaret did not marry until she was 33.
This is highly unusual for that period.

The date of 1383, However, is also attractive because it is one year before
the birth of the Talbots' first child John. This also seems expected.

"Hendrix & Oliver Newton Hayes had a double wedding both married Talburt

-- Richard D Jones, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 6 June 2019

The date of birth on Edna's gravestone is 29 Jan 1876. A different date
appears on the Delayed Certificate of Birth of her son Roy Jackson Hayes, 29
Jan 1865. This would put her age closer to her husband's. Hendrix was born
in 1854, so even at the earlier date, he would still be 11 years older than
her. By the age on the gravestone, he is 22 years older than Edna.

Edna was a witness on the request and receipt of the Delayed Certificate of
Birth, so it would seem she would have caught an error in her birth date. But
I would also wonder how the stonecutter could make such a gross error, and
even more so why it would not have been caught by the family and corrected.

Edna married Hendrix Hayes in Baxter County, Arkansas in 1897. They are
enumerated there in eh 190 census with several members of the Hayes family
living in their household.

The 1900 census reports that Ernest (William E) was born in Arkansas. But the
1910 census Ernest reports his birth state as Oklahoma, while his younger
sister Mary M is reported born in Arkansas. The 1920 census correctly reports
both Ernest and (Mary) Myrtle as born in Arkansas.

The family moved to Indian Territory in about 1902. Their daughter Mary was
born in Arkansas about 1901, and their next son Ray was born in Indian
Territory (reported as Oklahoma in the 1910 census) about 1903. By census
time in 1910 they had moved to Clay County, Texas.

Their son Roy (Jackie) was born in May 1909. So they moved to Texas in the
last half of 1909 or early 1910. The 1920 census reports the next three
children were born in Texas. Ivy (Iva) was born in January 1916. Since the
1920 census date was January 1, this means they moved back to Oklahoma between
January 1916 and December 1910.

The censuses here indicate they moved from Arkansas to Indian Territory
(merged with Oklahoma in December 1907) between 1900 and 1903. Hendrix's
obituary reports they moved to Indian Territory in 1902. The 1910-1920 census
reports of Ray's birth in Oklahoma matches this. They then moved into Clay
County, Texas, in the latter half of 1909 (after the birth of Roy Jackson in
Oklahoma), then to Cherokee County, Texas, at some point between the 1910 and
1920 censuses, but were back in Garvin County, Oklahoma, by the February 1920
census,

In 1930, the enumerator apparently misheard Hendrix' name, recording it as
Henry.

Notes for Mary Lue TALLEY

One might think Mary Lou was named after her father, named James Lou Talley in
several genealogies. But we note that on his daughter's Social Security
records, he is reported as James C Talley. Some genealogies list her as Mary
Lou Tugmon, but her Social Security records spell the middle name ocnsistently
Lue.
