Notes for Missouri Colenia TATUM

Most genelaogies and records have her name as Missouri C Tatum. One genealogy
by David Piper, reports her middle name as Colenia, and also reports her
husband's full name.

But this name seems odd for Missouri, since their last daughter is documented
with the same middle name: Cloma Colenia Tatum. Maybe they did give the same
middle name to two daughters. It did happen someitmes.

At least one genealogy has reported that Ona died in California. The
superficial details seemed to match, but I found some problems. The following
genealogy had this info for Ona, including the missing middle name. They had
very little on her, and linked to the California Death Index for the
information on her name and death. This indicates her married and death name
was Wilkinson.

Ona Magdeline Tatum
Birth 24 Apr 1912 in Arkansas
Death 24 May 1985 in Butte, California
-- Mullinnix,
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/35556841/person/18825959666?ssrc=&ftm=1

But there was a big problem that made me doubt the validity of this record.
The California Death index helpfully includes the surnames of the father and
mother. The surname of the father (and maiden name of the individual) was
Tatum. This fits. But the surname (Maiden name) of the mother was Shrader.
Here we hit a brick wall. Sam Tatum's wife was Mary Ann Nelson (as reported
by this genealogy, also, except under the variant found in a census as Mary
Jane Nelson). Further, the genealogy and the Death record both report that
this Ona was born in Arkansas, not Oklahoma.

Mary Ann outlived Sam, and we have no indication they divorced and Sam
remarried someone named Shrader. As close as this record seems to be, and as
much as we would like to include these details of middle name and date and
place of death, I can see no way that this record goes with our Ona M Tatum.
As close of this name and the birth date are, this is a different Tatum
family.

Some quick searching confirmed the doubt, when I found the real parents and
family of this Ona Magdaline Tatum. Here is the family information matching
Ona Magdeline Tatum Wilkinson from Arkansas.

------------------------
Emma Lou Shrader and John Thomas Tatum were married on November 21, 1909 in
Benton, Arkansas.
Children:
Ola Eunett August 27, 1910 December 24, 1982
Ona Magdalene April 24, 1912 May 24, 1985

Barbara Lou November 19, 1924
-- RootsWeb,
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tatum/tatum/Tatum%20Archives/HaleyManuscript.html
------------------------

I expect that with this location in Arkansas, if we probe a bit we could find
this is a branch of our same Tatum family, but this is not our correct Ona or
her nuclear family. Unfortunately, family genealogies are not reconstructed
by wishing and hoping and unresearched record-matching.

I found a candidate for a match, but this Leona M Tatum, while born about the
right time, died in Tulsa. This is an uncertainty, as I do not have anything
else connecting a member of this family to Tulsa. Also, the SSDI would usually
have the married name of a woman, or in this case she may nothave ever
married. I have been unable to find detailsabout Ona.

Notes for Samuel Ross TATUM

This child of Samuel S and Nacy Elizabeth Tatum is known in Green family memory
as Ross. Various other family genealogies also report him as Ross. Various
sources report him as Ross S. His grave in Allen, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma,
is marked as Samuel Ross Tatum.

The WWI military draft registration names him Samuel Ross Tatum. I am
following this, as it seems most likely the registration would have used the
official name. This is also consistent with the earlier census report using
only the name Samuel. It appears his full name was Samuel Ross.

The 1900 census lists him as Ross. His family must have used his second name
as primary, probably to distinguish from the father Samuel.

In the 1900 census in Chickasaw Nation (Ada, Pontotoc County, Okla), Ross and
his wife lived next door to his parents Samuel and Elizabeth, and their
16-year old daughter Colenia living with them.

The 1900 census is helpful as it includes the birth month and year of all
persons. This census gives Ross's birthday as Jan 1880. He appears in the
1900 census as Ross Tatum.

In 1920, the name of Ross appears as Samuel R Tatum, confirming our earlier
analysis of the sequence of names. Ross' wife has a different initial, A.
This again is different from family genealogy sources that report her name as
Mary Jane. Mostr genealogies have her name as Mary Ann.

Birth of the children is shown as Pontotoc County, since this is where the
family are located from Ross' childhood till the 1930 census. It appears they
are in Ada town after this became incorporated, though the one source I have
found for his place of death has the town as Allen.

I received an email from a Tatum descendant, with a name I had not seen in the
sources.

"Samuel and Mary also had another daughter named Bertie Marie Tatum (brown).
She is buried in fair view cemetery in Denison Texas. She was my grandmother."
-- Crystal Brown, Through OurFamily Genealogy messaging

With the name Bertie Marie I was able to find the family in the 1930 census,
which hd eluded me the last time I had investrigated this family. Berdie M is
enumerated in 1930 as the last child of the famly, age 6, thus born about

Ross is buried in the Allen Cemetery, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma. Samuel
Ross's gravestone shows his birth, by year only, as 1879, instead of 1880.
The year of death 1953 matches the known date of 27 Jun 1953.

This is interesting, since his wife's grave also has the year wrong on the
birth date. Mary's grave says she was born in 1882, when she was actually
born in 31 December 1881.

Family history of the Gregorys of Oklahoma reports Amanda's birthday as 22
February 1861, but we see that here she was recorded in the 1860 census. The
month of February matches the age of 4 months reported in the census. The
year should be 1860. The year was somehow recorded wrong or remembered
wrongly in family memory.

I cannot place this Hugh Tatum. This would be a nephew, I imagine, of Sam and
Elizabeth.

Next door to Sam and Elizabeth are George Ross Mullins and his wife Mary
Elvira Bailey and their children. Two doors down the other way are James and
Melvina Mullins, and on the other side of them is Green Mullins and his wife
Elizabeth. Green and James are brothers of George Ross.

The parents in this census record match very well with family tradition
reporting Sam and Lizzie Tatum's ages and birthplaces as the parents of Amanda
A Tatum West.

In the 1910 census Mart is recorded as Sanford Mart Tateum, in Chickasaw
Township, no incorporated area, in Pontotoc, Oklahoma. This is where Ada is
now located, and in 1920 their residence is in Ada, an incorporated town.

Family sources report that Janis' full name is Janis Milt Corbin. The 1920
census lists here as Milt A. I cannot account for the middle initial A. In
1910 Davis was listed as David. The correct name, going by other sources, is
Davis.

There was another child appearing between these two in 1910, who is missing in
1920. This was Sam L Tatum, age 7, thus born about 1903, who would have been
17 in 1920. It is possible he has moved away to work, or has married, though
17 is early for a man to marry in that era. Sam more likely died before the
1920 census. I have found not other information on a child name Sam L.

The birth date on the grave marker of Sanford Mart Tatum in Lightning Ridge
Cemetery in Pontotoc County is earlier than any of these censuses, showing
year of birth as 1868. This seems to refer to the same person, however.

It is of interest in this regard that one census report would make the birth
year of Mart's wife Milt 1868. Perhaps these dates were confused when the
date of birth was put on Mart's gravestone. I have not yet found information
on Milt's burial.

In the 1930 census, Mart is reported as a widower. This would indicate that
Milt died before the 1930 census.

Notice that the surviving wife's name is Ethel. We noted that in 1930 Mat was
a widower, meaning his first wife Milt had died before that census. I don't
have any informaiton on the second wife. I have not seen death information

Notes for Sarah Elizabeth TATUM

This person was difficult to confirm initially. Some genealogies reported
Sarah as a daughter of Samuel Ross Tatum and Mary Ann Nelson, but without
providing any details like birth date. There is a marriage record of Sarah
Tatum in Ada, who was issued a marriage certificate to Henry Dewberry on 24
July 1915. That would mean she was at most only 15 years old, since she is
not recorded in the census of February 1900. They are soon reported in Tulsa.
It is not clear that this is a daughter of Samuel Ross.

A genealogy does indeed report a 14-year old Sarah Elizabeth Tatum marrying
someone with a similar name, Derryberry. The genealogy does not have Sarah's
parents. The information does come from family sources.

Sarah Elizabeth Tatum, Birth 15 Jun 1901 in Ahloso, Pontotoc Co., Indian
Territory; Death 09 Jan 1990 in Fowler, CA; Marriage 24 Jul 1915 (age 14) in

I was not able to find the 1910 census until January 2012. I found the Tatum
family in teh right place with names poorly spelled and more poorly
transcribed on Ancestry.com. This census did report a child matching Sarah.

With the death location in California from the genealogy, I was able to locate
the California death record. California records ware wonderful, since they
provide the surnames of both parents of a deceased. This confirms that we
have the right Sarah. Her birth date and place match that reported in one or
more genealogies as the daughter of Samuel Ross Tatum. And this Sarah's
mother was named Nelson, matching Mary Ann Nelson, the wife of Samuel Ross
Tatum.

Note that the California death record reports that death occurred in Kings
County, California, rather than Fowler, Fresno County, as reported by the
genealogy. IN the pattern commonly found with death records, this seems to
mean that the residence at the time of death was Fowler, while actual death
occurred in neighboring Kings County, probably in hospital.

Notes for Sinie TATUM

The name in family sources is Sinie. Some transcriptions of the 1880 census
(such as Ancestry.com and FamilySearch (LDS) have transcribed this as Sinia,
but the handwritten original reads Sinie.

The final e in that name looks similar to final e in other names with a vowel
before the e in other names on the same page of the census.

The name Sinie is very common in the mid to late 1800s. It does not appear to
be short for another name.
