Most genelaogies and records have her name as Missouri C Tatum. One genealogy by David Piper, reports her middle name as Colenia, and also reports her husband's full name. The superficial details seemed to match, but I found some problems. The following genealogy had this info for Ona, including the missing middle name. They had very little on her, and linked to the California Death Index for the information on her name and death. This indicates her married and death name was Wilkinson. Ona Magdeline Tatum Birth 24 Apr 1912 in Arkansas Death 24 May 1985 in Butte, California -- Mullinnix, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/35556841/person/18825959666?ssrc=&ftm=1 But there was a big problem that made me doubt the validity of this record. The California Death index helpfully includes the surnames of the father and mother. The surname of the father (and maiden name of the individual) was Tatum. This fits. But the surname (Maiden name) of the mother was Shrader. Here we hit a brick wall. Sam Tatum's wife was Mary Ann Nelson (as reported by this genealogy, also, except under the variant found in a census as Mary Jane Nelson). Further, the genealogy and the Death record both report that this Ona was born in Arkansas, not Oklahoma. Mary Ann outlived Sam, and we have no indication they divorced and Sam remarried someone named Shrader. As close as this record seems to be, and as much as we would like to include these details of middle name and date and place of death, I can see no way that this record goes with our Ona M Tatum. As close of this name and the birth date are, this is a different Tatum family. Some quick searching confirmed the doubt, when I found the real parents and family of this Ona Magdaline Tatum. Here is the family information matching Ona Magdeline Tatum Wilkinson from Arkansas. ------------------------ Emma Lou Shrader and John Thomas Tatum were married on November 21, 1909 in Benton, Arkansas. Unfortunately, family genealogies are not reconstructed by wishing and hoping and unresearched record-matching. I found a candidate for a match, but this Leona M Tatum, while born about the right time, died in Tulsa. This is an uncertainty, as I do not have anything else connecting a member of this family to Tulsa. Also, the SSDI would usually have the married name of a woman, or in this case she may nothave ever married. I have been unable to find detailsabout Ona. Social Security Death Index Leona M. This child of Samuel S and Nacy Elizabeth Tatum is known in Green family memory as Ross. Various other family genealogies also report him as Ross. Various sources report him as Ross S. His grave in Allen, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, is marked as Samuel Ross Tatum. The WWI military draft registration names him Samuel Ross Tatum. I am following this, as it seems most likely the registration would have used the official name. This is also consistent with the earlier census report using only the name Samuel. It appears his full name was Samuel Ross. The 1900 census lists him as Ross. His family must have used his second name as primary, probably to distinguish from the father Samuel. This was Sam L Tatum, age 7, thus born about 1903, who would have been 17 in 1920. It is possible he has moved away to work, or has married, though 17 is early for a man to marry in that era. Sam more likely died before the 1920 census. I have found not other information on a child name Sam L. The birth date on the grave marker of Sanford Mart Tatum in Lightning Ridge Cemetery in Pontotoc County is earlier than any of these censuses, showing year of birth as 1868. This seems to refer to the same person, however. It is of interest in this regard that one census report would make the birth year of Mart's wife Milt 1868. Perhaps these dates were confused when the date of birth was put on Mart's gravestone. I have not yet found information on Milt's burial. In the 1930 census, Mart is reported as a widower. This would indicate that Milt died before the 1930 census. 1930 Federal Census, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, 15 April, Chickasaw Township, District 12, page 10B, Section 22, Hse #108, Fam #109 Tatum, Mark [Mart] W Head M W 57 Widowed at age 22 GA GA GA Tatum, David [Davis] Wife F W 24 Married at age 21 OK GA GA Tatum, Tennie Dau-in-law F W 17 Married at age 15 OK US US By 1940, Mart has married again and is enumerated with his second wife Ethel, and three of his children. 1940 Federal Census, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, 8 April, Chickasaw Township, District 62-18, page 3B, Hse #13, Rents $4 Tatum, Mart S Head M W 48 Married Grade 5 b Georgia Same Place in 1935 Laborer [b abt 1892] Tatum, Ethel Wife F W 38 Married Grade 4 b Okla Same Place in 1935 [b abt 1902] Tatum, Sam M W 19 Single Grade 3 b Okla Same Place in 1935 [b abt 1921] Tatum, Nora Ruth Dau F W 14 Single Grade 2 b Okla Same Place in 1935 [b abt 1926] Tatum, Billy Joe M W 10 Single Grade 2 b Okla Same Place in 1935 [b abt 1930] In 1940, Mart's son Dave is living next door married to his second wife Pauline Turner. 1940 Federal Census, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, 8 April, Chickasaw Township, District 62-18, page 3B, Hse #12, Rents $4 Tatum, Dave S Head M W 34 Married Grade 4 b Okla Same Place in 1935 Laborer [b abt 1906] Tatum, Pauline Wife F W 19 Married Grade 5 b Okla Rural Pontotoc Co OK in 1935 [b abt 1921] ------------------ Sanford Mart Tatum Birth Oct. 11, 1868 Death Dec. 30, 1951 Ada, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma Ada Evening News Ada Oklahoma Monday, December 31, 1951 S.M. This person was difficult to confirm initially. Some genealogies reported Sarah as a daughter of Samuel Ross Tatum and Mary Ann Nelson, but without providing any details like birth date. There is a marriage record of Sarah Tatum in Ada, who was issued a marriage certificate to Henry Dewberry on 24 July 1915. That would mean she was at most only 15 years old, since she is not recorded in the census of February 1900. They are soon reported in Tulsa. It is not clear that this is a daughter of Samuel Ross. A genealogy does indeed report a 14-year old Sarah Elizabeth Tatum marrying someone with a similar name, Derryberry. The genealogy does not have Sarah's parents. The information does come from family sources. Sarah Elizabeth Tatum, Birth 15 Jun 1901 in Ahloso, Pontotoc Co., Indian Territory; Death 09 Jan 1990 in Fowler, CA; Marriage 24 Jul 1915 (age 14) in Ada, OK to Henry Spencer "Spent" Derryberry -- Riggs-True, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/3548541/person/-1720760260?ssrc=&ftm=1 I was not able to find the 1910 census until January 2012. California records ware wonderful, since they provide the surnames of both parents of a deceased. This confirms that we have the right Sarah. Her birth date and place match that reported in one or more genealogies as the daughter of Samuel Ross Tatum. And this Sarah's mother was named Nelson, matching Mary Ann Nelson, the wife of Samuel Ross Tatum. Note that the California death record reports that death occurred in Kings County, California, rather than Fowler, Fresno County, as reported by the genealogy. IN the pattern commonly found with death records, this seems to mean that the residence at the time of death was Fowler, while actual death occurred in neighboring Kings County, probably in hospital. The name in family sources is Sinie. Some transcriptions of the 1880 census (such as Ancestry.com and FamilySearch (LDS) have transcribed this as Sinia, but the handwritten original reads Sinie. The final e in that name looks similar to final e in other names with a vowel before the e in other names on the same page of the census. The name Sinie is very common in the mid to late 1800s.
