---------------------- The 1880 Cass County, Texas, census enumeration of Nancy Ann (Taylor) Day indicates that both parents were born in Mississippi. This could have been as early as [?] ca 1804, 20 years prior to Lucinda's date of birth. [? It could have well been BEFORE 1804. They could have been older than 20 years old when Nancy Ann was born. We have found no marriage record or other details about her parents.] The Day family history indicates that the Taylor family lived among the Indians when the children were small. Mr. Taylor was a large man, well proportioned and seven feet tall; and he was well respected by the Indians. -- Jenkins Family History by Harold Keith Christian, http://objgenealogy.com/articles/josephsanfordjenkinshistory.pdf, p 4 ---------------------- In 1850, I find a family that matches the Nancy Day we are looking for, but the husband's name is different from two given in different family traditions. Harold Christian reports that Nancy Ann Day's husband was Joseph. Cousin Jimmy Epperson reports that her husband was L E. But the husband reported here, though location and age match, is reported by the initials F W. They have one child here named Joseph. This could be where the name Joseph came from that was known in the Jenkins family tradition. We see Nancy Ann in 1880 with her later son Daniel H. 1850 Federal Census, Attala County, Mississippi, 6 September, Township 13 R 5 E, page 22 (scan 107), Hse/Fam # 180 F W Day 25 M [no occupation given] Mississippi Nancy An Day 23 F Mississippi Joseph R Day 1 M Mississippi Nancy Day and a 9-year-old girl who appears to be her daughter are listed under the household of Joseph Jenkins, listed as what appears to be Jno Jenkins. Perhaps her husband was away from home working at the time, or had already died. 1860 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 17 October, PO Unionville & Cusseta, Beat 3, Page 72, Hse #483, Fam #495 Day, Nancy A 35 F W MS [b abt 1825] Day, L E 9 F W MS This child appears to be Mary L E Day, daughter of Joseph and Nancy Taylor Day. But where is the child Joseph who was 1 year old in 1850? Perhaps he died before this census. In 1900, Nancy is reported to have borne 8 children, but only was still living at that time, and this was her son Daniel H Day, who was born n 1862, with whom she was living at that time. No husband is reported at this census. Perhaps he was working out of state or traveling. I considered that her husband might have already died. But if that was the case, then both her husbands had the last name of Day. The 1850 censuses record above appears to be this Nancy Ann Day in Attala County, Mississippi, age 23, but the husband is F W Day. If her husband was dead in 1860, then Nancy remarried after this census, because in 1880, she has an 18 year-old-son, Daniel H. I have found no death record for any Joseph Day or F W Day, or a marriage record to fill in any details. There is no child to match 1-year-old Joseph in the 1860 census, so this may be a different Day household. I have found no other matching household with a Joseph and Nancy Ann Day in 1850. The 1850 report of Mississippi as the birth state of F W Day matches the 1880 census report of Mississippi as the birthplace of the father of Daniel H Day, Nancy's son. But also consider that in 1880 Daniel was 18, meaning he was born in about 1862. But Nancy had no husband reported in the census, only herself and her daughter 9-year-old L E Day. I have found no 1870 census for Nancy and her children. Harold Christian reports in the Jenkins Family History that her husband was named Joseph Day. But Jimmy Epperson reports the name as L E. Neither has any details. But it is interesting and somewhat suspicious that the reported father in Epperson sources has the same initials as the daughter (Mary L E) reported by Harold Christian as born in Arkansas 1850. I have not found a listing in the Arkansas census for a family matching Joseph and Nancy Ann Day. But the 1850 census cited above in Attala County, Mississippi, seems to match Nancy Ann. If a daughter Mary L E was born i n 1850 in Arkansas, the family would have had to move shortly after the census in Mississippi. But I cannot account for the discrepancy between the name of the husband FW and the reported name in Day family sources as Joseph or L E. Nancy Ann has not been found in the 1870 census. In 1880, Nancy is head of the household with one son in the home with her, listed as Daniel H. 1880 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 17 June, Precinct 3, District 12, Page 19 (scan 129), Hse/Fam #169 Day, Nancy W F 54 Widow Farming MS MS MS [b abt 1826] Day, Daniel H W M 18 Son Single Farming TX MS MS [b abt 1862] In this 1880 census, Nancy and Daniel H live next door to Nancy's brother Daniel Taylor, and his wife Mary Z Winter. Louisa Taylor's mother is reported in census information to have been born in Ireland. This indicates a possibility that rather than a sister, Louisa was an aunt of these Taylor children. Family memory is somewhat vague on the details of this period. In 1900 Nancy is living either next door or in the same household with her son Daniel H and his family. She is reported as a widow and listed with a separate household number and family number. But instead of Head of this one-person household, the enumerator reports her as the mother of Daniel H, who is in the previous household. 1900 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 16 June, Justice Precinct 3, District 22, page 14A, Hse/Fam #237 Day, D H Head W M March 1861 39 Married 15 years TX GA MS Farmer Day, Cora Wife W F Nov 1866 33 Married 15 years 7 children, 6 living SC SC IL Day, Nora Dau W F Feb 1886 14 TX TX SC At School Day, Maggie Dau W F July 1887 12 TX TX SC At School Day, William Son W M July 1890 9 TX TX SC Day, Lee Dau W F June 1893 6 TX TX SC [This is Cora Lee] Day, James Son W M July 1896 4 TX TX SC Day, Preston Son W M Jan 1899 1 TX TX SC 1900 Federal Census, Cass County, Texas, 16 June, Justice Precinct 3, District 22, page 14A, Hse/Fam #238 Day, Nancy Mother W F Jan 1824 76 Widow 8 children, 1 living MS MS MS This census reports indicates that all Nancy's children except one have already died. He was the son of President Zachary Taylor, nephew of Union Brigadier General Joseph Pannell Taylor and brother-in-law of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. During the Mexican War, he served as a military secretary to his father and after President Taylor's death in July 1850, he inherited the family's Louisiana sugar plantation and became one of the richest men in Louisiana. In 1855, he was elected to the Louisiana Senate and served until the out brake Civil War, when Jefferson Davis whom was married to his sister Sarah before her death, appointed him Colonel in command of the 9th Louisiana Infantry. He fought at the Battle of Bull Run and was promoted Brigadier General in October 1861. He commanded a Louisiana Brigade in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Seven Days Battle and was promoted the youngest Major General in the Confederate Army in July 1862. For the next two years, he participated in conflicts to include Siege of Vicksburg, plus the battles of Red River, Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. In April 1864, he was promoted Lieutenant General commanding the Army of Tennessee, in campaigns until he surrendered his corps to Union General Edward Canby in Mississippi, on May 8, 1865. After the war, he wrote his memoirs which is one of the most credited reports of the Civil War and was active in Democratic Party politics. Taylor fought in the War of 1812 and vanquished the Seminoles in Florida. He antagonized the South by advocating the integration of California (a non-slave state). He was the second President to die in office. He died 5 days after he became ill after attending a July 4th celebration at the Washington Monument. In the late 1980's, author Clara Rising theorized that he was murdered by poison and was able to convince Taylor's closest living relative, as well as the Jefferson Co., KY Coroner, to order an exhumation. Since his wife would not allow embalming at the time of his death in 1850, his remains did not allow more extensive testing to be done. The results came back 9 days later that his body contained arsenic, but no more than what a normal human being would have and his death was ruled as severe gastroenteritis. He was first buried in the Congressional Cemetery, Washington D.C. July 13, 1850. His remains were then shipped back to his home in Louisville, Kentucky on October 25, 1850. There, they remained in the family vault until he and his wife were moved to their final resting place on May 6, 1926 in the mausoleum. He remained there undisturbed until June 17, 1991 when his body was brought out of the crypt for the exhumation. He was re-interred in the mausoleum next to his wife. -- Stories, Ancestry.com, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/3472694/media/c3edee7a-685a-4e6f-a14b-27714d0846f6, Original Source Unknown ---------------------------------------
